The first thing he sawwhen he landed at Miami InternationalAirport were all the colorfully paintedbuildings.“Wow, there's so much paint in thiscountry!”, Delgarde said, “When I getmoney in this country, I'm going to buypaint and take paint back home.”From that idea, Global Paint for Charitywas born. Delgarde, who is 38 andworks as a health care consultant,states the mission: "to recycle leftoverpaint from businesses and residents,process it and then donate it tovulnerable families in developingcountries all around the world."Delgarde explains the process formaking paint in Haiti. "We cut downtrees and we start a fire. We pick outrocks from the river and we put it insidethe fire and close the fire for a week.And once it's done, it's a wonderfulpowder." He points out that this type ofpaint washes away in the rain.Delgarde's nonprofit organizationwants to make a lasting difference.Two years ago, Delgarde started goingto construction sites in the Atlantaarea, asking them what they did withtheir leftover paint. He told them, "Iwant to collect your paint and take itsomeplace where people don't haveaccess to paint. We'll give them paintand we'll change their lives. That'swhen I started collecting paint."The U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency estimates that approximately10% of the 637 million gallons of paintsold annually is left over, equal toabout 64 million gallons per year.So far, Delgarde has donated 6,000gallons of paint to projects in Kenya,Haiti and Uganda.
