ATIVIDADE ANTIMICROBIANA DE ÓLEOS ESSENCIAIS DE - UFSM

This study has highlighted the specificity of the activity of some essential oils on
isolates of E. coli. Our results indicate that to replace growth promoters in swine feed, a
combination of essential oils should be used .
CONCLUSIONS
This study determined that the essential oils of oregano, Mexican oregano, thyme and
cinnamon have bactericidal activity against E. coli isolated from swine; oregano essential oil
had the highest antimicrobial activity (MIC and MBC) compared to the essential oils of
Mexican oregano, thyme and cinnamon. The susceptibility to essential oils was similar among
subgroups of isolates and was independent of antimicrobial resistance and the presence of
virulence factors.
