Na selecção, tivemos 68 países, um número muito significativo para

qualquer evento de qualquer tipo em Portugal, que nos enviaram

várias centenas de filmes. Recentíssimos. Inclusivos, modernos, emocionantes,

sejam eles de imagem real ou animação, curtas ou longas,

filmes fantasiosos ou realistas. Chegam tanto de grandes companhias

de produção mundiais como da pequena/média produção cinematográfica

independente. São filmes sobre os grandes temas do

momento, de todos os géneros, de todos os tipos de orçamento,

muitos já premiados anteriormente, outros tão recentes que acabaram

de ser feitos há dias. Mas apenas com um critério: oferecer

Cinema de Qualidade.

Duros de roer, teimosos, aqui estamos mais um ano. Continuamos

a fazer o Fantasporto, como sempre, com toda a nossa experiência

e maturidade, e trazer à cidade do Porto uma perspectiva cinematográfica

contemporânea e única em Portugal, a do Cinema venha ele

de onde vier.

Temos 26 filmes em Antestreia Mundial e Europeia, um número

inédito num festival de cinema em Portugal. Este facto é exemplo do

impacto e excelente imagem internacional do Fantasporto e da confiança

e reconhecimento que o festival tem como rampa de lançamento

mundial para a produção cinematográfica mais recente.

E também continuamos a lançar novos cineastas. Nesta edição,

muitos realizadores apresentam as suas primeiras obras, vindas de

lugares tão diversos como o Japão, Itália, Países Baixos, Portugal,

Reino Unido, França, Filipinas, Hungria e Turquia e que reforçam,

assim, o papel importante do Fantasporto como descobridor de

novos talentos cinematográficos. Entre as descobertas do Fantasporto

estão já, não esquecer, 7 Óscares de Melhor Filme e cineastas

como Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, Luc Besson, Kathryn

Bigelow, David Cronenberg, Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro,

David Fincher, Danny Boyle, David Lynch, James Cameron

e muitos, muitos outros.

Continuamos a lutar pelo Cinema Português. No Prémio do Cinema

Português - Melhor Filme, uma selecção de filmes de gente

jovem e empenhada. Em novos moldes, temos igualmente a competição

para Universidades e Escolas com cursos de Cinema, com

a colaboração de várias entidades como a Universidade Católica,

Universidade Lusófona, Universidade Minho, ESMAD, ESAP,

Escola Soares dos Reis.

Nunca o Fantas foi só Cinema. Em 2023, continuamos a promover a

Cultura em geral e o Cinema em Particular. Vocacionada para as

reflexões sobre o Cinema, temos pela 1ª vez, as MOVIE TALKS, um

ciclo de sete conferências, workshops e debates, com profissionais

presentes no festival, para todos, especialmente cinéfilos e estudantes

do Audiovisual. Este ciclo gratuito procura abranger todo

o percurso do filme, desde o projecto inicial à distribuição, com palestras

de vários especialistas de cinema.

Finalmente, obrigada a toda a equipa do Fantasporto. Obrigado

ao nosso público, aos nossos participantes, aos media, aos nossos

patrocinadores e aos nossos convidados.

Together with a woman dressed as a man and who wants to learn

his trade, he is going to fight superstition and the horrors of the

Inquisition. With a great story of love and salvation, these three

independent films with common characters present an epic historical

portrait of a critical epoch. They also show why Estonia has

earned today the world of cinema’s respect and is one of the countries

with more co-productions in Europe. Reminding us of

“The Name of the Rose”, mostly because of its detective story subplot,

these films go beyond, showing us the beginning of modern

Medicine and of scientific criminal investigation, the role of women

at a time when the Church portrays them as evil and the struggle

of civilian power to annul the destructiveness of the Inquisition.

O xerife da cidade pede ajuda ao Boticário Melchior, misto de

médico e polícia, para o ajudar a resolver uma série de assassínios.

Com a ajuda de um aprendiz que chegou de fora, Melchior vai

tentar ver os factos que apontam para o criminoso.

The town sheriff asks Melchior, the apothecary who acts as a doctor

and a policeman, for help in solving a series of killings. Together with

an apprentice from out of town, Melchior is going to look for the facts

that indicate who the criminal is.

A trilogia “Melchior” (2022) é constituída por três longas-metragens independentes

deste realizador e encenador nascido em 1962, director artístico do

Teatro Municipal de Tallinn e um dos mais prestigiado da Estónia, conhecido

pelo seu trabalho dirigindo os grandes clássicos. Como realizador de cinema foi

já responsável, entre outras, pelas longas-metragens “Names in Marble”

(2013), “Mushrooming” (2012), “Purge” (2012) e “1944” (2015) que foi

o candidato da Estónia aos Óscares. A trilogia “Melchior” continua com o seu

tema favorito, os filmes históricos baseados nos romances aclamados internacionalmente

de Indrek Hargla. Participou ainda como actor em “Tangerines”

(2013), filme nomeado para o Óscar do Melhor filme Estrangeiro e para um

Globo de Ouro.

The trilogy “Melchior” (2022) includes three independent features by this

renowned stage director, artistic director of the Tallinn City Theatre and one of

the most prestigious in Estonia, especially known for his work with the great classics.

As a film director, he is known for the features “Names in Marble” (2013),

“Mushrooming” (2012), “Purge” (2012) e “1944” (2015), Estonian submission to

the Oscars. With the “Melchior Trilogy” he continues his theme of historic films

based on best-selling and internationally acclaimed novels by Indrek Hargla.

As an actor, he participated in “Tangerines” (2013), a Golden Globe and an

Academy Best Foreign Language film nominee.

Melchior descobre a verdadeira identidade do aprendiz. Entretanto,

há um fantasma à solta na cidade. Com a chegada da Inquisição,

Melchior tem de caminhar pela linha estreita da verdade

científica e a nuvem da superstição. Uma belíssima história de

amor, com Melchior a ter de enfrentar os ataques dos recém-

-chegados ao mesmo tempo que tentar salvar os inocentes.

Melchior learns the true identity of the apprentice. Vision of a ghost

frighten the city. With the arrival of the Holy Inquisition to Tallinn,

Melchior must walk in the fine thread between the scientific truth and

a cloud of superstition. With a beautiful love story going on, Melchior

has to face the attacks of the newcomers and save the innocents all at

the same time.

Continuando a sua missão como ajudante do xerife da cidade,

tenta descobrir quem oprime a cidade ao mesmo tempo que

tenta proteger a mulher quer ama e neutralizar a Inquisição.

Melchior receives in his house a wounded man who, he thinks,

someone is trying to kill. Carrying on with his mission to help the local

sheriff, he has to discover those who oppress the town while protecting

O presidente da poderosa Gojo Conglomerate manda matar um a

um os yakuzas e quase todos os seus opositores. Depois, anuncia

que vai concorrer a “mayor” e que a sua cidade terá mais segurança

se ele for eleito. Mas uma brigada especial e secreta da polícia vai

investigá-lo e derrotá-lo. Com excelentes interpretações, especialmente

de Hitoshi Ozawa no papel do chefe da equipa policial, este

é um dos melhores exemplos do thriller japonês, cheio de acção

mas não descurando a construção das personagens.

Antigo “stunt man” em vários filmes, esta é a primeira longa-

-metragem deste, agora, realizador japonês.

A former stunt man, this is the first feature by this Japanese director.

The president of the powerful Gojo Conglomerate sends to death

most of the yakuzas and almost all of those who oppose him. Then he

announces he is running for mayor and says his city will be safer with

him in charge. But a special and secret unit from the police is going to

investigate him and defeat him. With fine acting from all, especially

Hitoshi Ozawa in the role of the head investigator, this is one of the

finest examples of Japanese thrillers, filled with action but not forgetting

the construction of the characters.

Um argumentista em crise, abandona o cão da namorada num

campo para não ter de tratar dele. Arrependido, volta ao sítio

onde o deixou, mas o cão desapareceu. Entra então numa loja de

conveniência de uma estação de serviço que fica perto. Uma realidade

paralela o espera, assim como uma mulher casada que vai

desbloquear a sua criatividade. Uma história da imaginação muito

original e inesperada.

A screenwriter in a creative block abandons his girlfriend’s dog in a field

far away so that he doesn’t have to take care of it. Soon repenting,

he goes back to the place where he left it but the dog is no longer there.

Nearby is a convenience store in a gas station. A parallel reality

awaits him. Meeting a married woman is going to set his creativity free

again. A story of the imagination presented in a very original and unexpected

form.

Alyson, o marido e o seu bébé voltam à casa da infância da mulher,

onde cedo se tornam vítimas de vários fenómenos que se

prendem com os pais, abusivos e violentos. Um dos melhores

filmes de horror de 2022, na tradição do cinema italiano de

Argento e Fulci.

Segunda longa-metragem deste realizador italiano, depois de

“Age of the Dead”, (2013) que foi Prémio do Júri no Kimera

Film festival. A sua curta-metragem “Anger of the Dead”

(2014) passou em competição no Fantasporto 2014.

Alyson returns with her husband and baby to her childhood home.

Soon they become prey of several phenomena and the memories of her

abusive and violent parents. One of the best horror films of 2022, in

the tradition of Argento or Fulci.

This is the second feature of the Italian director, following “Age of

the Dead”, (2013) which received the Jury’s Award at the Kimera

Film festival. His short “Anger of the Dead” (2014) was screened in

competition in Fantasporto 2014.

Foi ainda um dos mais premiados filmes no festival de Taipé.

no desenvolvimento da tecnologia da realidade virtual e da neurociência.

Num portal vermelho descobre barulhos que tomam

a forma de uma pessoa no mundo virtual. Assim, fica ligada a esta

realidade e também a um espírito vingativo, Imajo, que amaldiçoa

a ilha e mata as pessoas numa série de mortes violentas por afogamento.

Mais uma ideia original do mestre do horror japonês, realizador

de “The Grudge e “Suicide Forest Village”, vencedor

do Fantasporto em 2021.

Nasceu em 1972 no Japão. Realizador e argumentista, é conhecido

por “Ju On: The Grudge” (2002), “The Grudge” (2004) e “The

Grudge 2” (2006). Foi o primeiro japonês a chegar a Nº 1 da

bilheteira nos Estados Unidos com “Ju-on/The Grudge”, a que

se seguiu o êxito da trilogia “Village” que o Fantasporto já

apresentou. Foi o vencedor do Prémio de Melhor Filme Fantástico

no Fantasporto 2021 com “Suicide Forest Village” (2021).

In a little southern island, Tomohiko, a researcher, works on research

development in virtual reality technology and neuroscience. Then he

finds a strange red gate and noises in the shape of a person from data

records of the virtual reality world. That leads the island to be connected

to the other world and Imajo, a vengeful ghost that curses the

island, comes after and dooms with violent drowning deaths. Another

very original story coming from the Japanese master of horror who

directed “The Grudge and “Suicide Forest Village”, winner of Fantasporto

in 2021.

He was born in 1972 in Japan. He is a director and writer, known for

“Ju On: The Grudge” (2002), “The Grudge” (2004) and “The

Grudge 2” (2006). He is the first-ever Japanese director who

recorded No.1 US box office hit with “Ju-on/The Grudge”, followed

by the hits of the trilogy “Village” which Fantasporto has already

amores estranhos, e alguns assassinatos são os temas. O elo de

todas estas histórias é Mariko, a dona do café que também é

Winner of the White Raven Award at the Brussels Film Festival, this

film is a network of stories, reminding us of cult classics such as “ET”

or Basket Case”. In a comedic tone, we follow the customers of a cafe

in Kabuchiko and we get to watch stories of each individual. Aliens,

FBI investigation, strange love and murders are some of the themes

revealed by this film. The link to all of these characters is Mariko, who

owns the bar, but also works as a detective. Winner of the White Raven

at the Brussels Film Festival.

Fantasia (Canadá) é mais um bom exemplo do moderno

cinema belga de horror. Excelente interpretação de Eline Schumacher,

no seu primeiro papel no cinema.

Brother and sister, Martha and Felix, live in a big old house which was

left to them by their father, the notorious Mons Butcher. Apart from

this inheritance, Martha feels she has to protect her brother who, like

their father, is a serial killer. Abused at work, Martha tries to find the

balance between Felix’ violence, his madness and the traumas of her

very own life. This film won the important Cheval Noir Award in the

Fantasia Festival (Canada) and is another fine example of modern

Belgian horror cinema. Great acting by Eline Schumacher in her first

role on film.

This director was born in North Wales, UK. He studied illustration and

screenwriting at UCA. He made a career as a storyboard artist and

working on “Doctor Who” reboots and “Tomb Raider” games before

becoming a set decorator and art director for popular TV shows in the

UK. He directed his first short film “Anglesey Road”, which went on to

win several awards, starting a fulltime writing/directing career, with

hundreds of TV commercials and content films for brands such as

American Express, Armani or L’Oreal. He also directed “Love in The

Asylum” (2018), a short film based on the Dylan Thomas poem.

terem o desejado filho. Sabendo que o marido morreu e na posse

de um livro demoníaco, ela vai tentar trazê-lo de volta dos mortos.

Mas que seres são aqueles que estão num casulo? Um belo

exemplo de novo terror fantástico a que não será alheio o facto de

um dos produtores e argumentista, ser o ilustrador e designer

Jean Marc Toussaint que esteve no Fantasporto em 1996 e depois

foi mesmo o autor do cartaz do festival em 1997. Para os amantes

do horror fantástico.

of a demonic book, she is going to try to bring him back from the dead.

A fine example of the new horror, surely with the influence of its writer

and one of the producers of the film, the designer Jean Marc Toussaint

who visited Fantasporto in 1996, having later created the poster of the

festival in 1997. Not to be missed by the fans of fantasy horror.

A vida de Josué roda à volta da velha mercearia que herdou do pai

e tomar conta do seu irmão louco que tem de manter fechado em

casa. A ida ao bar e a sua amizade com uma mulher da vida, Abigail,

são as suas únicas válvulas de escape. Mas as rotinas de Josué

são abaladas quando o irmão foge de casa. Josué vai tentar apagar

o rasto assassino do irmão, mas a perversa realidade dos acontecimentos

vai virar a sua existência e obrigá-lo a enfrentar o seu

macabro destino.

Realizador, argumentista e produtor, nasceu em Barcelona em

1970. Trabalhou alguns anos com as maiores agência de publicidade

em Espanha. Em 2015 fundou a “Creatures of the dark” e começou

a desenvolver e produzir filmes de horror independentes. Realizou

“Asmodexia” (2014), a sua primeira longa-metragem apresentada

no Fantasporto, e “After the Lethargy” (2018).

Josué’s life revolves around the old grocery store he inherited from his

father and the care of an insane brother whom he must keep locked

up. The bar, his faith, and his friendship with Abigail, a street girl, are

his only escape valves. But Josué’s routines are violently altered

the night his brother manages to escape. Josué will try to cover up

the brutal misdeeds of his brother, but the perverse reality of the

events will turn his existence upside down, forcing him to face his

macabre destiny.

Director, writer and producer, born 1970 in Barcelona. He worked for

years with some of the leading advertising agencies in Spain. In 2015,

founded “Creatures of the Dark”, and presently is developing and

producing indie horror films. He directed “Asmodexia” (2014), his first

feature, presented in Fantasporto, and “After the Lethargy” (2018).

Of Macedonian origin, Director, writer, photographer and artist, Milcho was

awards. The New York Times included it on its “1,000 Best Films Ever Made”

list. He directed six features – “Willow” (2019), “Bikini Moon” (2017),

“Mothers” (2010), “Shadows” (2007), “Dust” (2001) and “Before the Rain”

(1994). His films were screened among others in Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Sundance,

incluem “Structure of a Crystal” (1969) que venceu em Mar del Plata (1970);

“Family Life” (1971) que venceu em Chicago, Valladolid e Colombo; “Illumination”

(1973) foi Grand Prix de Locarno (1973) e premiado em Gdansk; seguiram-se

“Quarterly Balance” (1975), “Camouflage” (1977) and “Spiral” (1978).

A rich sick man in search of an heir to his wealth. The nearest is his

cousin whom he has not seen for years, a mathematical genius.

However, this young man thinks his future is already mathematically

decided and doesn’t seem to accept his offer. Together they go to look

for the meaning of life. Another feature by multi-awarded Polish

master Krzysztof Zanussi, once a frequent visitor of the Figueira da Foz

Festival in the 70’s and who visits Fantasporto for the first time.

Born in 1939 in Warsaw, Poland. Documentary and feature film director scriptwriter.

“Lines”, apresentado no Fantasporto 2017, venceu vários prémios

internacionais. “Exile”, de 2020, foi também visto no Fantas.

A screenwriter in a creative block abandons his girlfriend’s dog in a

field far away so that he doesn’t have to take care of it. Soon

repenting, he goes back to the place where he left it but the dog is no

longer there. Nearby is a convenience store in a gas station. A parallel

reality awaits him. Meeting a married woman is going to set his creativity

free again. A story of the imagination presented in a very original

and unexpected form.

Numa ilha do sul, Tomohiko Kataoka, um programador, trabalha

no desenvolvimento da tecnologia da realidade virtual e da neurociência.

Num portal vermelho descobre barulhos que tomam

a forma de uma pessoa no mundo virtual. Assim, fica ligada a esta

realidade e também a um espírito vingativo, Imajo, que amaldiçoa

a ilha e mata as pessoas numa série de mortes violentas por afogamento.

Mais uma ideia original do mestre do horror japonês, realizador

de “The Grudge e “Suicide Forest Village”, vencedor

do Fantasporto em 2021.

Nasceu em 1972 no Japão. Realizador e argumentista, é

conhecido por “Ju On: The Grudge” (2002), “The Grudge”

(2004) e “The Grudge 2” (2006). Foi o primeiro japonês a

chegar a Nº 1 da bilheteira nos Estados Unidos com “Ju-on/The

Grudge”, a que se seguiu o êxito da trilogia “Village” que o

Fantasporto já apresentou. Foi o vencedor do Prémio de Melhor

Filme Fantástico no Fantasporto 2021 com “Suicide Forest

Village” (2021).

In a little southern island, Tomohiko, a researcher, works on research

development in virtual reality technology and neuroscience. Then he

finds a strange red gate and noises in the shape of a person from data

records of the virtual reality world. That leads the island to be connected

to the other world and Imajo, a vengeful ghost that curses the

island, comes after and dooms with violent drowning deaths. Another

very original story coming from the Japanese master of horror who

directed “The Grudge and “Suicide Forest Village”, winner of Fantasporto

in 2021.

He was born in 1972 in Japan. He is a director and writer, known for

“Ju On: The Grudge” (2002), “The Grudge” (2004) and “The

Grudge 2” (2006). He is the first-ever Japanese director who

recorded No.1 US box office hit with “Ju-on/The Grudge”, followed

by the hits of the trilogy “Village” which Fantasporto has already

screened. He won the Best Fantasy Film Award in Fantasporto 2021

with “Suicide Forest Village” (2021).

todas estas histórias é Mariko, a dona do café que também é

detective. Filme vencedor do White Raven no Festival de

Bruxelas.

Realizador Japonês, vencedor do Prémio Melhor Filme e do Prémio do Público

com a longa “Siblings of the Cape” (2018) no Skip City Film Festival. Foi ainda

assistente de realização de “Mother” do vencedor do Óscar de Melhor Filme,

Bong Joon Ho (“Parasita”), já apresentado no Fantas. Com este “Life of

Mariko in Kabukicho” venceu o White Raven no Festival de Cinema Fantástico

de Bruxelas (Bélgica).

revealed by this film. The link to all of these characters is Mariko, who

Zahara, a stateless refugee, lives on a small remote island in Malaysia,

as tunas académicas.

In an apocalyptic world the routine of the days and hours are the only

company of a survivor. He deals with the difficulties of solitude, hunger

and fear which rule his life and faces the threats around him. What

e branco. Um homem quer separar-se da mulher com quem vive

há 12 anos. Mas não se decidindo a dizer-lhe, vai pedindo conselhos

num casal. Por ironia, são os dois escolhidos para serem

entrevistados como um par modelo. Encetam, então, um percurso

difícil. Premiado já como Melhor Filme no Festival de

Alexandria, no Lifft Festival na Índia e no Treasure Coast Film

Festival nos Estados Unidos.

Luís Diogo, um argumentista cujas obras têm sido trabalhadas por realizadores

como Leonel Vieira, Luís Galvão Teles e M. F. Costa e Silva, iniciou uma carreira

como realizador de curtas -metragens que foram premiadas, nomeadamente

“Noite Gélida em Castelo Branco” (2011) e “Noite Fria em Castelo

Branco”, ambas apresentadas no Fantasporto, e “Desta Água… “(2010). A sua

primeira longa-metragem. “Pecado Fatal” (2013), foi vencedor de 9 prémios

internacionais, seguido de “Uma Vida Sublime” (2018) com 24 prémios entre

os quais o de Melhor Actor no Fantasporto 2018, o World Cinema Award no

Festival de Indianapolis (E.U.A.) e o Golden Film Award no US Hollywood

Film Festival.

All love stories have two versions: in colour and in black and white.

A man wants to separate from his companion of 12 years but doesn’t

know how to tell her. While he is indecisive, he listens to the advice of

others and recovers what they have said about relationships. Ironically,

they were chosen to be interviewed as a model couple. The pair begins

then a new and difficult journey. This film has already been granted

Best Film Awards in the Alexandria Film Festival, Lifft Festival in India

and Treasure Coast Film Festival in the U.S.A..

Producer, screenwriter and director, has seen his work directed by directors

pessoa depois de um episódio traumático. Premiado com o Prémio

de Horror no Venezia Shorts. O realizador trabalha em Hollywood

e em Inglaterra e participou nos efeitos especiais de “Star Wars -

The Force Awakens”, “Interstellar” e “The Dark Knight”.

A woman living in a barge is tormented by Fear itself, after a traumatic

experience. Film with several awards, such as Jury Awards

in Tokyo and Chicago Horror and Best Horror Short in the Venice

short film festival. Its director is working in UK and Hollywood and

participated in the special effects of films such as “Star Wars

- The Force Awakens”, “Interstellar” and “The Dark Knight”.

actuou em “Frenzy” de Hitchcock e mais tarde em “Kingdom of

Heaven” de Ridley Scott.

No Fantasporto, “Darklands” foi Prémio da Crítica em 1997, tendo

vencido também o de Melhor Argumento e Prémio Especial do

Júri de Cinema Fantástico.

Ganha ainda o Melhor Filme no Festival of Fantastic Films no Reino

Unido e o Silver Award no WorldFest Houston nos EUA.

The power of Celtic pagan rituals endures in the memory of Wales. With

mines closing and unemployment rising, a journalist named Frazer becomes

involved with an intern from his newspaper whose brother had

died under strange circumstances. His investigation leads him to suspect

an industrialist with political ambitions. Drawn into a series of pagan

rituals, he participates in one of them. Among the cast of the film

is Jon Finch, who starred in Hitchcock’s “Frenzy” and later in Ridley

Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven.”

At Fantasporto, “Darklands” won the Critics’ Award in 1997, as well

Film School, Julian Richards dirigiu para a BBC o documentário

“A Mutter of Voices” (1994), sobre o genocídio no Ruanda,

e também trabalhou para a Channel Four Television. Para a Amblin

Entertainment, de Steven Spielberg, adaptou “Calling All

Monsters” para argumento. Realizou depois “Darklands” (1996),

Meliès D’Argent Best European Fantasy Film de 1997 e premiada

no Fantasporto. Seguem-se “Silent Cry” (2002), “The Last

Horror Movie” (2003) que foi Meliès D’Argent. “Summer Scars”

(2007) ganhou dois BAFTA Awards. Depois veio o documentário

“Charles Dickens’ England” (2009) e “Shiver” (2012) este nos

E.U.A. (2013). “Daddy’s Girl” (2018) e “Reborn” (2018) estão

a concurso no Fantasporto 2019. “Darklands” celebra em 2023

os seus 25 anos de estreia.

School, Julian Richards wrote and directed the doc-drama “A Mutter

of Voices” (1994) about genocide in Rwanda for the BBC, and also

Ferdinand Lapuz tem sido um colaborador regular do Fantasporto

há mais de uma década, tendo já recebido para os seus filmes

variados prémios. A nossa homenagem a este grande produtor e o

nosso agradecimento.

Part of his filmography is included in the 10 features presented in the

Fantasporto Retrospective of his work, in addition to the two, “Kargo”

and “About Us But Not About Us” that integrate the competition in the

Directors Week. His films have been exhibited in festivals including the

“A Sarah é uma enfermeira numa maternidade pública. O hospital

está num tumulto com mulheres grávidas em diferentes etapas da

gestação. Tem pouco pessoal e por isso Sarah é obrigada a fazer um

turno duplo. Observando as mulheres que entram e saem da sua

enfermaria, ela nota bem quem vai dar à luz pela primeira vez

e quem é veterana. As enfermarias estão esgotadas. Duas mulheres

e os seus bébés partilham uma cama pequena, enquanto as que

já estão em trabalho de parto ficam nos corredores. Sarah aceita

tudo naturalmente já que o seu coração e mente estão nos seus

“Sarah is a nurse at a public Maternity Hospital. The hospital is in a

frenzy, with pregnant women in different stages of labour. It is short on

staff, so Sarah is forced to put a double shift. Observing the women

coming and going in her ward, she notices who is a first timer or a

veteran. Meanwhile, the wards are overcrowded. Two women and their

babies share single beds while those in labour are spilling unto the

hallways. Sarah takes all this in stride, her heart and mind more on her

EDUARDO ROY JR

Esta é a primeira longa-metragem de Eduardo Roy que faleceu

recentemente. Foi a vencedora do Deauville Asian Film Festival,

venceu ainda o Prémio de Novo Realizador no Las Palmas Film

Festival e teve uma Menção Honrosa no Vancouver International

film Festival. A actriz principal venceu o prémio de interpretação

no Diana Zubiri, Young Critics Circle em 2012. Eduardo Roy Jr foi

o realizador de “Lola Igna” (2019) e “Pamylia Ordinario” (2016),

ambos exibidos no Fantasporto.

This is the first feature by Eduardo Roy who died recently. This film was

the winner at the Deauville Asian Film Festival, the winner of the First

Time Director Award at the Las Palmas Film Festival, the winner of a

special mention at the Vancouver International film Festival. The main

actress, Diana Zubiri, was also awarded qt the Young Critics Circle in

2012. Eduardo Roy Jr was also the director of “Lola Igna” (2019) and

“Pamylia Ordinario” (2016), both screened in Fantasporto.

“Bwakaw é uma comédia dramática acerca do envelhecer e o medo

que todos temos de envelhecer sozinhos. Rene é um homem gay

que se assumiu publicamente quando tinha já 70 anos. Doente nos

seus últimos anos, pensa que já é tarde para o amor e que tudo

o que tem à frente é apenas a morte. Esta é a minha primeira

colaboração com o realizador Jun Robles Lana. Foi a sua primeira

incursão no cinema independente. Lana começou a sua carreira

a fazer cinema comercial e foi director criativo na televisão. Este

filme tem como actor principal o lendário e já falecido actor Eddie

Garcia que venceu como Melhor Actor no the Asian Film Festival

e nos Asian Film Awards pela sua interpretação neste filme.” - F.L.

“Bwakaw is a drama-comedy about growing old, and everyone’s fear of

growing old alone. Rene is a gay man who came out of the closet at

age 70. Ailing in his twilight years, he thinks it is now too late for love,

even companionship, and that all there is to look forward to his Death.

This was my first collaboration with director Jun Robles Lana. This was

his first venture in independent filmmaking. Lana started his career

directing commercial films and was a creative director on TV. The film

stars the late legendary Filipino actor Eddie Garcia who won as Best

Actor at the Asian Film Festival and Asian Film Awards for his

JUN ROBLES LANA

Jun Robles Lana nasceu a 10 de Outubro 1972, na cidade de Makati

nas Filipinas. Formou-se na University of Santo Tomas com uma

licenciatura em Arte da Comunicação. A sua primeira peça foi

“Sa Pusod Ng Dagat (In the Navel of The Sea)” realizada pelo seu

mentor Marilou Diaz-Abaya e que estreou no Festival de Berlim

em 1998. Lana venceu o Prémio de Melhor Realizador nos festivais

de Tallinn, Nova Delhi, Madrid e Vladivostok.

Jun Robles Lana was born on October 10, 1972 in Makati City,

Philippines. He is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas with

a degree in Communication Arts. His debut screenplay “Sa Pusod Ng

Dagat (In the Navel of The Sea)” directed by his mentor Marilou Diaz-

Abaya premiered at the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival.

Lana won Best Director awards from Tallinn, New Delhi, Madrid and

Vladivostok international film festivals.

“Randy é um pai solteiro que trabalha numa fábrica de capacetes

e que acidentalmente mata, ao errar na medicação, a sua filha de

oito anos. Perturbado por um misto de culpa e remorso pela morte

prematura da filha, tem dificuldade em se separar do corpo e

deixá-la ser enterrada, esquecendo assim a sua culpa. Este filme

baseia-se num artigo que eu li num jornal em 2007. É acerca dos

construtores de caixões na cidade de Santo Thomas na minha

província natal, Pampanga. Tornou conhecidos e aclamados os

nomes dos meus conterrâneos, o realizador Jason Paul Laxamana

e o actor Allen Dizon. Agradeço ainda ao meu produtor Dennis

Evangelista por ter feito este filme.” - F.L.

“Randy is a single father who works in a casket factory accidentally kills

his eight-year-old daughter Angeline through wrong medication. As he

is haunted by a mixture of guilt and remorse over his daughter’s untimely

death, he finds it challenging not only to have his daughter’s body

discharged and buried but also to erase his culpability. This film was

inspired by a news article I read in one of the newspapers in 2007. It was

about the coffin makers of Santo Tomas town in my home province,

Pampanga. This film gave acclaim to my townmates director Jason Paul

Laxamana and actor Allen Dizon. I am thankful to my producer Dennis

JASON PAUL LAXAMANA

Jason Paul Laxamana formou-se em Comunicação de Rádio na

University of the Philippines Diliman. Durante uma década ele fez

cinema independente e comercial. Como cineasta independente,

escreveu e realizou vários filmes premiados na sua língua natal tal

como este cinema. “Magkakabaung” (The Coffin Maker)

e “Mercury Is Mine”. Como importante realizador, criou êxitos de

bilheteira como “100 Tula Para Kay Stella” (100 Poems for Stella),

“The Third Party” e “Just A Stranger”. “Magkakabaung” venceu

o prémio de Melhor Actor e prémios Netpac no Festival de Cinema

de Hanoi.

Jason Paul Laxamana is a graduate of BA Broadcast Communication

from the University of the Philippines Diliman. In a span of a decade, he

has made his mark in both independent and commercial cinema. As an

independent filmmaker, he has written and directed several awardwinning

films in his native language such as “Magkakabaung” (The

Coffin Maker” and “Mercury Is Mine.” As a mainstream filmmaker,

he has created box office hits such as “100 Tula Para Kay Stella” (100

Poems for Stella), “The Third Party,” and “Just A Stranger.”

“Magkakabaung” won the Best Actor and Netpac awards at the Hanoi

International Film Festival.

“Vinte e cinco anos depois da erupção do Monte Pinatubo ter

devastado a sua província e ter apagado quase totalmente a sua

herança cultural, os jovens Kapampangans não sabem ou nem querem

falar a sua própria língua. Um rapaz, Jaypee, aventura-se pela

paisagem coberta de cinzas e conhece Conrado Guinto, o guardião

da sua língua, em processo de desaparecimento. É o reconhecido

rei dos poetas Kapampangan. Conrado acha que Jaypee foi uma

oportunidade enviada pelos céus para passar a sua herança para a

nova geração, enquanto Jaypee pensa que tem toda a sorte do

mundo por ter encontrado a melhor pessoa para o ajudar no seu

afecto por uma rapariga da escola. Ambos ficarão desapontados ao

“Twenty-five years after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo devastated

their province and nearly wiped out their cultural heritage, young

Kapampangans find themselves unable and unwilling to speak their own

language. One boy, Jaypee, ventures into the ash-covered countryside

where he encounters the guardian of their vanishing language, Conrado

Guinto, the crowned king of Kapampangan poets. Conrado considers

Jaypee as a heaven-sent opportunity to pass on his legacy to the next

generation, while Jaypee thinks he has hit the jackpot in finding the best

person to help him win the affection of a girl in school. Both of them are

in for a disappointment as their lives begin to unravel before each other’s

eyes. This was the second film I produced for my alma mater, Holy

Angel University. It launched the career of director Carlo Enciso Catu

who was a university student when we shot this film, and young actor

Ronwaldo Martin. This was the first script written by my mentor during

em 2015. O seu filme de 2018, Kung Paano Hinihintay Ang Dapithapon

(Waiting For Sunset), venceu o prémio Especial do Júri da

Semana dos Realizadores no Fantasporto , e foi Prémio do Público

no Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas em França.

Carlo Enciso Catu was born on September 26th 1993. While in university

he directed his debut feature, Ari: My Life with A King in 2015. His

2018 film, Kung Paano Hinihintay Ang Dapithapon (Waiting For Sunset),

bagged the Special Jury Prize Award at the Fantasporto International

Film Festival, “Directors Week” section in Portugal; and the

Audience Choice Award at the Vesoul International Film Festival

of Asian Cinemas in France.

“A pequena distância do bairro vermelho da cidade está Area, um

quarteirão de casas de prostituição em que uma multidão de

prostitutas se podem vender por uma lata de sardinhas ou a crédito.

Durante o seu apogeu, Area teve cerca de 700 bordéis que serviam

milhares de homens de pouco rendimento, rapazes com hormonas

activas e desajustados da sociedade, todos para aproveitar as

vantagens dos preços baixos. Hilary, uma das trabalhadoras de sexo,

guarda as suas economias para fazer a sua viagem de sonho para o

Estados Unidos para encontrar o filho a quem perdeu o rasto

devido ao pânico causado pela erupção do Vulcão Pinatubo.

O filme baseia-se nas histórias que ouvi aos meus colegas do liceu

sobre como perderam a virgindade nos anos 80. Falei do meu

conceito ao realizador Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio. Demorou 25

anos a concretizar o filme. Disseram-nos depois que o local foi

demolido pelas autoridades depois de verem o filme.” - F.L.

“A short distance from the city’s red-light district is Area, a neighborhood

of brothels where over-the-hill sex workers can be had for a can of

sardines or even on credit. During its heyday, Area had up to 700

brothels servicing thousands of low-income men, hormonally active

boys and society misfits - all taking advantage of the bargain price of

sex available only at Area. Hillary, one of the sex workers, keeps her

life-savings to fulfil a dream to travel to the United States to find a son

she said she lost during the panic caused by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.

The film was based on stories I heard from my male classmates in high

school on how they lost their virginity in the 80’s. I told director Luisito

Lagdameo Ignacio about my concept. It took almost 25 years before it

got made into a film. We were told that our location in the film was

demolished by the city government after watching the film.” - F.L.

LUISITO LAGDAMEO IGNACIO

Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio começou a sua carreira como realizador

de videoclips para os melhores cantores e um conhecido director

de programas de variedades. A sua primeira longa-metragem foi

“Asintado” (Between The Eyes). O seu filme “Laut” venceu o Prémio

de Melhor Actriz e uma Menção no Fantasporto 2016

e “School Service” venceu a Melhor Actriz na Semana dos Realizadores,

e Melhor Actriz e uma Menção do Orient Express no Fantas

de 2019. Venceu ainda o Prémio Especial do Júri no 12º Eurasia

International Film Festival no Casaquistão.

Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio started his career as a music video director for

Filipino top singers and a TV director for variety programs. His first

independent feature Asintado (Between the Eyes). His film Laut won

Best Actress and Special Mention at the 2016 Oporto International

Film Festival and School Service won Best Actress in the Director’s

Week and Special Mention in the Orient Express here in Oporto in

2019. Area won Special Jury Prize at the 12th Eurasia International

Film Festival in Kazakhstan.

“Depois de uma tempestade súbita e violenta, uma adormecida

aldeia piscatória na pequena ilha do sul de Tagalog acorda para um

fenómeno extraordinário - o mar está vermelho. Flutuando nas

suas águas estão milhares de maçãs. Ninguém sabe de onde vieram.

Alguns suspeitam de que é augúrio de má sorte de Baconaua, uma

criatura mitológica. Poucos acreditam num milagre do céu e outras

pensam que vem tudo de um lugar sinistro. Esta foi a última longametragem

em que eu trabalhei com Joseph Israel Laban.

Infelizmente, Joseph morreu em 25 de Julho de 2021, vítima de

Covid-19 com 40 anos de idade. Este foi o nosso quarto filme

depois de “Cuchera” (2011), “Termitari” (2013) e “The Sister”

“After a particularly strong squall, a sleepy fishing village on a tiny island

in Southern Tagalog wakes up to an astonishing sight - their sea has

turned red. Floating on their waters are thousands of apples. No one

knows where they came from. Some suspect this is a bad omen from the

baconaua - a creature of myth. Few believe it to be a miracle from

heaven, while others fear a more sinister source.

This was the last film that I worked with Joseph Israel Laban. Sadly,

Joseph passed away on July 25, 2021 due to Covid 19 at the age of 40.

This was our fourth film after his first film “Cuchera” (2011), “Termitari”

(2013) and “The Sister” (2016).” - F.L.

A sua primeira longa-metragem,”Cuchera”, foi exibida no Festival

de Toronto. Em 2015 venceu o Prémio de Melhor Realização no

ASEAN International Film Festival. Joseph foi um dos realizadores

filipinos que faleceram devido ao Covid-19.

Joseph Israel Laban (March 9, 1981 - July 25, 2021) obtained his

bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of the

Philippines at Diliman. He also attended New York University on a

Fulbright Scholarship for his master’s degree in Journalism with

a concentration in News and Documentary. His first feature film

“Cuchera” was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2015, he won the Best Director award at the ASEAN International

Film Festival and Awards for “Nuwebe”. Joseph was one of the Filipino

filmmakers who passed away due to Covid 19.

“Um respeitado senador deixa temporariamente a sua mulher de

seis décadas para tomar conta do seu melhor amigo que é gay e a

morrer de cancro. Apesar da benção da mulher, os seus 3 filhos

ficaram escandalizados. O homem desafia o seu protesto colectivo

e declara que ama o seu amigo, padrinho dos três no baptismo e do

seu casamento, do mesmo modo que ama a sua mulher.

O realizador Joel Lamangan e eu desenvolvemos o conceito para

este filme a caminho do Porto em Fevereiro de 2018. Estávamos

no mesmo voo com o actor Tony Mabesa e eu sugeri que se fizesse

um filme com ele como actor principal. Tony acabou por vencer

o Prémio de Melhor Actor no Festival de Houston.” - F.L.

“A revered former senator temporarily leaves his wife of six decades to

take care of his gay best friend, who is dying of cancer. Notwithstanding

their mother’s blessings, his three children are scandalized. The old man

defies their collective protest and declares that he loves his friend –

godfather to all three both in baptism and matrimony – the same way

that he loves his wife.

Director Joel Lamangan and I developed the concept for this film on our

way to Oporto in February 2018. We were on the same flight with actor

Tony Mabesa and I suggested we should make a film with him in the lead.

Tony passed away on October 4, 2019. Tony won a Best Actor award at

the Houston International Film Festival.” - F.L.

O multi-premiado realizador Joel C. Lamangan estudou Cinema

e Teatro em várias escolas nas Filipinas e no estrangeiro. Foi actor

e encenador no teatro e na televisão, tendo depois interpretado

vários papéis no cinema antes de se decidir pela realização, fazendo

o seu primeiro filme,” Darna”, em 1991. De entre os seus muito

e notáveis filmes estão “The Flor Contemplacion Story” (1995)

que ganhou o Golden Pyramid Award no Cairo e “Hustisya” que

foi exibido em Varsóvia e em Nantes.

Multi-awarded Filipino director Joel C. Lamangan studied film and

theater at schools in the Philippines and abroad. He acted and directed

for stage and television, then took screen roles, before opting for film

direction, making his debut in 1991 with “Darna”. Among his notable

films are “The Flor Contemplacion Story” (1995) which won the Golden

Pyramid award in Cairo and “Hustisya” was shown in and competed in

Warsaw and Nantes. “Rainbow Sunset” won the Special Jury Prize at

the Houston International Film Festival.

of the LGBTQ community and I have several films with gay characters

in Distance and gave me the opportunity to make a film with lesbian

criação de conteúdos. A sua primeira longa-metragem, “Dementia”,

esteve em competição no Fantasporto 2014 e venceu prémio de

Melhor Filme Estrangeiro no St. Tropez International Film Festival.

“Distance” esteve também em competição no Tokyo International

Film Festival em 2018.

Perci Intalan is a Director/Producer/Writer from the Philippines.

He has worked at the Walt Disney Company, at GMA Network Inc.

Philippines and at TV5 (Associated Broadcasting Company) Philippines.

He is the President of The IdeaFirst Company, a content creation

company in the Philippines. His first feature film “Dementia” was

“Liz, de 45 anos e solteira, é uma psicóloga pediátrica que trabalha

com crianças especiais. Passou muito tempo da sua vida a tratar dos

seus pais doentes. Depois de eles morrerem, Liz está sozinha

e resignada a uma vida solitária. Por conselho dos seus amigos

Marco e Lauren, Liz começa a simplificar a casa onde vive e conhece

Josh, de 26 anos, um jovem antiquário. Josh tem vivido sozinho há

anos, depois de perder o pai e o avô e sem grande memória da mãe.

As respectivas solidões juntam-nos, criando um elo especial entre

eles. Esta foi a primeira longa-metragem da realizadora Joji Alonso.

Produzi ainda alguns dos seus filmes, incluindo “Ekstra” (incluída

nesta retrospectiva), “Tandem” e “ Ilawod”, ambas exibidas no Fantasporto.

““Ekstra” (The Bit Player) é uma comédia dramática social que

segue o dia aparentemente normal de Loida Malabanan que inicia

mais uma jornada de filmagens de uma telenovela como figurante.

À medida que as filmagens se desenrolam, temos uma ideia do sistema

de produção e da exploração dos trabalhadores marginalizados

como ela. Quando interrompi a minha atividade como produtor

em 2010, alguns dos meus amigos realizadores, como Jeffrey Jeturian,

ajudaram-me a ganhar a vida recomendando-me como fornecedor

de gente com talento. Assim, entre 2010 e 2012, trabalhei

como caçador de talentos para filmes e programas de televisão

no meu país. Foi a minha experiência durante este período que me

levou ao conceito de “Ekstra”com a minha atriz filipina favorita,

“Liz, 45 and single, is a clinical psychologist who works with special and

gifted children. She has spent much of her adult life looking after her

sickly parents. After her parents passed, Liz finds herself alone and

resigned to a solitary life. Upon advice of her friends Marco and Lauren,

Liz begins downsizing her home and meets Josh, 26, a young antique

dealer. Josh has been living on his own for years, after losing his father

and grandfather, and without much memory of his mother. With their

loneliness drawing them together, Liz and Josh create a special bond.

This was director Joji Alonso’s first feature film. I have produced some of

her films including “Ekstra” (included in this retrospective), “Tandem”

and “Ilawod” both shown here in Fantasporto. Joji was my first female

director and this film was a selection in the Cinemalaya Independent

“EKSTRA (THE BIT PLAYER) is a socio-realist drama-comedy film,

it follows a seemingly usual day in the life of Loida Malabanan as she

embarks on yet another shooting day of a soap opera as an extra.

As the shoot goes on, we get a glimpse of the truth in the ruling system

of the production as well as the exploitation of the marginalized laborers

like her. When I took a break from producing in 2010, some of my

director-friends including Jeffrey Jeturian helped me make both ends

meet by recommending me to their home networks and movie

companies as a talent supplier. Thus, from 2010 to 2012, I worked

primarily as talent supplier for films and television programs in my

country. It was my experiences during this period that inspired me to

develop the concept of EKSTRA which starred my favorite Filipino

actress Vilma Santos.” - F.L.

Joji Villanueva Alonso é uma realizadora e produtora. Produziu os

premiados “The Bet Collector”, “The Woman In The Septic Tank”,

“The Bit Player” e “Big Night”. Os seus filmes “Tandem” e “ Ilawod”

foram exibidos no Fantasporto. A sua primeira curta-metragem,

“Last Order”, venceu o Prémio de Melhor Curta no Pyongyang

International Film Festival em 2018. “Belle Douleur” recebeu

o Prémio do Público no Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival e o

de Melhor Actor, para Kit Thompson no Houston International

Film Festival e, mais importante, o Prémio Especial do Júri

desse festival.

Joji Villanueva Alonso is a producer and director. She produced the

award-winning films “The Bet Collector”, “The Woman In the Septic

Tank”, “The Bit Player” and “Big Night”. Her films “Tandem” and

“Ilawod” were shown here in Oporto. Her first short film “Last Order”

won the Best Short Film at the Pyongyang International Film Festival

in 2018. “Belle Douleur” received the Audience Award at the

Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and won the Best Actor award

Jeffrey Jeturian nasceu a 4 de Novembro de 1959 em Manila,

nas Filipinas. Estudou Comunicação de Rádio e TV na Universidade

das Filipinas. Depois da universidade, em 1983, trabalhou em

produção, subindo a escada, desde assistente de produção,

continuidade, direção artística, produção e assistente de realização

ao longo de um período de 15 anos, antes de chegar ao seu sonho,

o de ser realizador de pleno direito em 1998. O seu filme, “Kubrador”

(The Bet Collector) venceu os Prémios da FIPRESCI em Moscovo

e em Nova Deli.

Jeffrey Jeturian was born November 4, 1959 in Manila, Philippines.

He took up Broadcast Communication at the University of the

Philippines. After college in 1983, he worked in film production,

climbing his way up from being production assistant, script continuity,

art director, production designer and assistant director over a 15-year

period before finally fulfilling his dream of becoming a full-fledged film

director in 1998. His film “Kubrador” (The Bet Collector) won

FIPRESCI awards from Moscow and New Delhi.

JOVENS CINEASTAS E ESTUDANTES DE CINEMA.

Pretende-se com este programa extra-exibição de filmes do festival promover o debate e a tertúlia, reflectindo

e apontando caminhos para os novos cineastas. Os temas vão desde a definição de critérios na escolha do que filmar,

o caminho para a concretização do projecto, a finalização, a divulgação, até à distribuição e exibição em sala.

Com a participação de Luís Diogo (realizador), Luís Moya

(realizador), Pedro Farate (director de fotografia), Costa Valente

(Produtor), Isabel Pina (realizadora), Danyel Guerra (escritor)

Artes Plásticas no Fantas 2023

Com História” – Palestra

Com a participação do Presidente do Conselho de Adminis-

tração, o pintor José Emídio, e cujo primeiro presidente foi

Henrique Alves Costa, pai do arquitecto que renovou o Batalha

e impulsionador do Fantasporto.

“Movie Potential and Writing a Movie”

– Palestra/Workshop

Pelo realizador e escritor britânico Lawrence Trott, a partir do seu

livro “Escape”. Como descobrir uma boa história, como a adaptar à

linguagem cinematográfica. Moderadora: Beatriz Pacheco Pereira.

“The Future of Theatrical

and Independent Cinema” – Palestra

Por Martin Dale, realizador britânico e correspondente da

revista Variety em Portugal. Moderador: Pedro Gil Vasconcelos

(realizador). Em Inglês/Português

“Production and Distribution

- The Main Challenge” – Debate

Com Ferdinand Lapuz, produtor filipino cuja retrospectiva integra

o programa do Fantasporto 2023 Julian Richards (UK), realizador

do filme homenageado “Darklands”, produtor e distribuídor,

Anthony Waller (UK) realizador e Márta Bényei (Hungria),

Diretora do Departamento de Festivais do National Film Institute

da Hungria, representante da Hungria no Eurimages. Depois

do filme concluído, há que mostrá-lo. Festivais, compra e venda

de direitos, theatrical. Como responder à concorrência. Moderador:

Small Country” – Palestra/Debate

Com a participação do realizador estoniano Elmo Nüganen

a propósito da exibição das 3 longas-metragens da trilogia no Sábado,
