Lisbon, that the photographer sets up the
lights and a red cloth as backdrop.
Eusébio arrives, almost unnoticed, 20 minutes
late. He comes in through the restaurant car
park and doesn’t even have time to say hello.
Someone from a TV station asks him for a
couple of minutes on the 1965 European Cup
Final against Inter Milan. Coming in, the
Pantera Negra heads straight for our corner.
He pulls a face at the lights (his head always
goes down when the lights are close), but does
everything he’s asked to do. At 3.30pm, he’s
“finally free” for lunch.
Before taking his cushioned seat at the bar,
a glass of Moet & Chandon appears before
him. Well-used to interviews, he directs the
conversation to food: “I love prawn and crab
curry, or baked corvina with coconut rice,
Mozambique-style. As for Portuguese dishes:
bacalhau cozido com todos (boiled salt cod
with a variety of vegetables), or any good fish
baked or grilled”. But not today: “We’re
having beef on the hoof with peas and
chorizo. I phoned the chef and arranged it”.
On another day, he might have gone for arroz
de frango de cabidela (black chicken rice) or
lamprey. He’ll also often choose turbot, sea
bream, rock bass, grilled grouper, boiled
grouper head or a rich fish soup. “Now and
again”, he tries other house specialities such
as roast kid, fish stew or roast duck.
Despachadas as preferências
