The NGO Network for Disaster Prevention - final report<br />
of the project<br />
English Summary<br />
The "NGO Network for Disaster Prevention" Project was implemented by<br />
<strong>ALMA</strong>-<strong>RO</strong> Association in partnership with TERRA Mileniul III Foundation, the<br />
Eco-Consultancy Center, EcoLogic Association and "Origini Verzi" Ecological<br />
Club between the January and December 2007. The project's objectives were:<br />
-To strengthen the environmental NGOs' capacity to network in order to<br />
reduce disaster risk;<br />
-To increase environmental NGOs capacity to become involved in disaster<br />
risk management processes at the local level;<br />
-To stimulate the collaboration of NGOs and local public authorities in<br />
disaster risk management.<br />
The project's target groups were environmental NGOs allover the country,<br />
central and local public authorities and citizens.<br />
The activities implemented by the partners included:<br />
-the elaboration of a guide entitled "Disaster risk management. A guide for<br />
environmental NGOs" (available only in Romanian);<br />
-the development of a qualitative and quantitative research on NGOs'<br />
perceptions and opinions regarding their knowledge and involvement in<br />
disaster risk management;<br />
-the creation of the NGOs Network for Disaster Prevention (having an<br />
informal structure);<br />
-training for environmental NGOs;<br />
-the elaboration of promotion and information materials regarding the network<br />
and disaster risk management (correlated with environmental protection);<br />
-the organization of a national round table reuniting central administration<br />
and NGOs;<br />
-the organization of four local round tables on disaster prevention and<br />
environmental protection for NGOs and local administration;<br />
-the implementation of an information campaign for the citizens of three<br />
villages in the Suceava County;<br />
-the organization of a follow-up meeting with environmental NGOs;<br />
-the publication of a final report of the project.<br />
The project was based on the fact that environmental NGOs should contribute<br />
to disaster risk management because, generally, environmental problems are<br />
sources of different types of disasters. For example, deforestation is often one<br />
