Cylinder problems in Cashmere
• By Tom Doudney
A MYSTERY problem
afflicting hot water
cylinders in Cashmere is
becoming an expensive
and recurring issue for
residents.
A number of residents in
the suburb have had their
cylinders fail multiple times
in quick succession since
the February 2011 earthquake,
with most problems
relating to the elements.
The problems have not
related to one particular
element type, supplier or
installer.
Bowenvale Ave
resident Dean Johnston,
an engineer, said he had
gone through at least six
elements in his hot water
cylinder since the February
2011 earthquake.
It was such a regular
problem, he had started
replacing the element himself,
trying various different
types of product.
“I have actually got the
plumber to rotate the hot
water cylinder so I can
reach the element a lot
easier,” he said.
“It’s frustrating not being
able to see how we could
improve it. It would be nice
to get some advice from the
council.”
Purau Tce resident Richard
Suckling said he had to
replace elements four times
within 14 months.
Hot water cylinder suppliers
and plumbers have
suggested the problem may
be caused by something
in the water but the city
council has refuted that
suggestion.
City council head of three
waters and waste John
Mackie said there were no
identified impurities in the
Cashmere water supply that
would directly contribute to
this type of failure.
“Galvanic or bimetallic
corrosion is known to occur
where dissimilar metals are
in contact or close proximity
with each other,” he said.
“Dissimilar metals often
found in hot water systems
include stainless steel, mild
steel, copper and galvanised
steel. Care needs to be
taken in the design of hot
water systems to reduce the
likelihood of galvanic corrosion.”
Stuart Berryman, a technical
engineer for hot water
cylinder manufacturer
Peter Cocks Ltd, said the
company had sent elements
which had failed to its various
suppliers and all had
indicated the problem was
related to something in the
water.
The types of elements and
cylinders that were having
problems in Cashmere
were not having the same
problems elsewhere in the
city, he said.
“We have spoken to other
cylinder manufacturers as
well, with different brands
of elements, different
brands of cylinders, and the
only common denominator
is the area.”
Recently, the company
had found putting in titanium
elements with a
sacrificial anode had been
effective in tackling the
problem.
ADDINGTON SPEED LIMITS
The Spreydon-Heathcote
Community Board has backed
its chairwoman Karolin Potter’s
calls for speed limits to be
reduced from 50km/h to 30km/h
in Addington streets between
Lincoln Rd, Brougham St, Selwyn
St and Moorhouse Ave. At its
meeting on Wednesday, the board
agreed to make a formal request
to the city council. The city
council turned down the same
request from the board 18 months
ago but it has since introduced
30km/h speed limits on central
city streets. Ms Potter has said
vehicles are travelling too fast
round the narrow streets and
causing damage.
COMMENDED FOR
HERITAGE
The Linwood Community
Centre, on Worcester St, was
awarded a ‘commended’ placing
at the biennial Canterbury
Heritage Awards on Thursday.
The centre is a 19 th -century
heritage building designed by
Joseph Maddison. The award
citation said Linwood had been
hit hard by the earthquakes so
the imperative to save and restore
the community centre in spite of
extensive damage suffered in the
2011 earthquake, had been strong.
The winners were announced at a
ceremony at the Arts Centre.
