Matatiki complex makes a 

big splash on opening day

MAYOR PHIL Mauger and 

Hornby city councillor Mark 

Peters made a big splash at the 

opening of Matatiki Hornby 

Centre. 

The new 4000m² library, 

customer services, recreation and 

sport centre on Smarts Rd was 

officially opened on Friday. 

Despite its initial $34 million 

budget blowing out to about 

$46.9 million, Mauger said it was 

an exciting milestone to cut the 

ribbon – and take an impromptu 

dip in the pool. 

After the ceremony, Mauger 

and Peters decided to mark the 

occasion by diving into the main 

indoor pool fully clothed. 

“With over 12,000 new 

homes expected in Hornby and 

surrounding areas by 2044, 

I’m confident Matatiki will be 

well used and come to be well 

loved over the coming decades,” 

Mauger said. 

The complex includes a cafe, 

creative activities room, meeting 

rooms, outdoor courtyard and a 

stage. 

The indoor pool hall has a 

large lane pool, learn-to-swim 

pool, family spa, and a toddlers’ 

wet play area. It has been a long 

wait for residents in the area who 

have gone without a facility like it 

since the Sockburn outdoor pool 

was closed in 2006. 

A hydrotherapy pool was 

added to the complex late in the 

design phase following pressure 

from the community. 

The council agreed to put in 

$2.5 million, while the Hornby 

Rotary Club and the Greater 

Hornby Residents’ Association 

raised the remaining $1.4 million. 

Peters predicts the 

hydrotherapy pool will be one 

of the centre’s most popular 

attractions. 

“(It’s the) best thing for Hornby 

and it’s going to be great for 

Christchurch. This will bring 

them from far and wide to come 

and enjoy this wonderful pool.” 

It also marked a new chapter 

for the Hornby Library, which 

recently vacated its old home for 

the past 50 years on Goulding 

Ave and moved 21,000 books 

across to Matatiki.

Award-winner inspired 

by quake experience 

THIRTEEN YEARS ago, Ben 

Exton was shovelling sand 

and liquefied silt out of his 

great-uncle’s garden – now he 

has become the first engineer 

outside of academia to win a 

prestigious EQC award. 

The former Riccarton High 

student received the Ivan Skinner 

Award at the New Zealand 

Society of Earthquake Engineering 

conference last week in recognition 

of his work to develop 

and commercialise cost-effective 

quake engineering solutions. 

“What I 

remember from 

the Canterbury 

earthquakes was 

the enormous 

damage, but also 

the incredible 

human impact,” 

said Exton, who 

was a year 12

student when the February 22, 

2011, quake struck. 

“I particularly recall my greatuncle, 

who was a keen gardener, 

and his beloved garden was 

completely covered in sand and 

silt from liquefaction. Watching 

a stoic Kiwi bloke like him 

totally devastated and helpless 

against the effects of an earthquake 

made a huge impact on 

me.” 

Exton, 29, is now the chief 

executive and co-founder of 

Seismic Shift Ltd. 

He is the first engineer outside 

of academia to receive the 

award, which is funded by EQC 

Toka Tū Ake. 

“Receiving this award is really 

encouraging for me, but I hope 

also for others in the private 

sector seeking to make the 

world a better place through 

innovation. 

“It is important to test new 

ideas in the laboratory for 

scientific grounding, and then 

turn these ideas into real-life 

solutions that are cost-effective 

and fit the current building 

environment.” 

After finishing his degree at 

Canterbury University, Exton 

cut his engineering teeth at 

Structex and further expanded

“I had this picture forming in 

my head at 3am, so I sketched 

it and then decided to get the 

design printed in 3D. We didn’t 

have too much confidence in the 

sketch on paper, but when Miki 

and I put the 3D pieces together, 

it actually worked.” 

Fundraiser aims 

to fill beds at 

children’s centre 

CHOLMONDELEY Children’s 

Centre has turned to the 

Canterbury community to ask 

for help to fill the beds at its 

respite care facility. 

It has launched ‘Give a Good 

Nights Sleep’, a fundraising 

campaign with three of the 

centre’s beds installed throughout 

the city to help drive both 

awareness and donations. 

“We wanted to install something 

in the city that reminded 

the public about Cholmondeley’s 

role in the community and that 

every night for 50 weeks of the 

year there are tamariki in need 

being cared for by us,” said 

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre 

general manager, Toni Tinirau. 

Cholmondeley has 23 beds 

for children to stay in during 

times of family stress or crisis, 

but on average just 17 of these 

beds are filled due to financial 

limitations. 

“We work hard to provide 

a free safe haven for as many 

Canterbury tamariki as we can 

but we can’t do it alone, we need 

the community to come together 

and help us fill our beds,” Tinirau 

said.

Still feeling the buzz after years 

of service to amateur athletics

caught up with him to 

discuss his time in the 

sport 

WORKING WITH one of New 

Zealand’s best athletics coaches 

was “bloody marvellous,” says 

Buzz. 

A talented sprinter across the 

100 and 225-yard distances, in 

1956 Buzz was searching for 

something extra that would 

propel him into the reckoning 

for the 1958 Commonwealth 

Games in Wales. 

It came in the form of 

Valdemar ‘Valdy’ Briedis – a 

Latvian-born coach based in 

Christchurch. 

“I went and saw him in 1956 

and I said, ‘right, I want you to 

coach me and I’ll give you two 

years’,” Buzz said. 

The effect was immediate – 

Buzz was Canterbury champion 

in 1956, 1957 and 1958 across 

both sprinting disciplines. 

He said Briedis was a fantastic 

coach. 

“He was a hard guy, but he 

was a good coach. We used to 

go up to his place after a Sunday 

run up the Port Hills and come 

back and he’d make pancakes 

for us. 

“He sort of gave you the inspiration 

to actually perform a 

little bit better than you actually 

were. He boosted you up a wee 

bit and he brought the best out 

of his athletes, all the time.” 

The coaching had Buzz on the 

verge of Commonwealth Games 

selection – before a horrific 

injury struck. 

“Three weeks before the team 

was announced, I pulled two

hamstrings. Not one, bloody 

two of the bastards. 

“They told me, they reckon I 

went about eight feet in the air. 

They went like rubber bands.” 

COACH: Latvian born Valdemar “Valdy” Briedis played a major role in Buzz Jones’ training. 

A former president of Papanui 

Toc H, Buzz, who recently 

celebrated his 87th birthday, 

started doing athletics at high 

school before joining the Crichton 

Cobbers club at 15. 

He started working with Briedis 

when he was 19. 

He was already Buzz at that 

point – the nickname given to 

him as a child by his sister, after 

he would run around with his 

arms out pretending to be an 

airplane. 

In the 1960s, Buzz travelled 

to Melbourne to represent the 

Power House Athletic club. 

“It was the greatest time of my 

life,” he said. 

“I ran great times over there. 

I met bloody great athletes over 

there. I met some of the greatest 

athletic coaches in the world 

over there.” 

When Buzz returned to New 

Zealand and joined Toc H in 

1962, he organised annual 

meets between his two clubs – 

the events alternating between 

Melbourne and Christchurch 

each year, with the final one 

held in 1970. 

Buzz was an official at the 

1974 Commonwealth Games 

held at QEII stadium in 

Christchurch, in charge of the 

starting blocks for sprinters. 

He said they were the “greatest 

games in the world,” and he 

was disappointed the stadium 

was neglected after being damaged 

in the Christchurch earthquakes. 

“I thought personally they 

could have rebuilt it there. I 

honestly do. 

“Ngā Puna Wai, I don’t like 

it down there, it’s too bloody 

cold.” 

These days he helps with fundraising 

for the club – selling 

honey and running pub quizzes, 

as well as chipping in himself 

to help young athletes play and 

travel for the sport. 

“I do a life membership-type 

fund and we put in and help 

athletes who can’t afford to pay 

for their fees,” he said. 

“Also I give honey to the kids 

and we sell them for ten bucks 

a jar and they can make up to 

four dollars a jar. 

“So it’s good fundraising for 

them.” 

Each jar of honey has a thankyou 

note on the back – a token 

of appreciation for those willing 

to help out. 

Keeping young people, he 

says aged 16-23, in athletics, 

and helping others get into the 

sport, is one of the main aims 

for Buzz. 

“I can remember one day I 

went down to the club and we’ve 

got a shed there with all the 

equipment in. 

“There was a bunch of kids sitting 

there, and they had a bag 

beside them full of graffiti spray 

cans, so I knew, obviously, what 

was going to happen,” he said. 

“I went in and I grabbed a 

couple of javelins, and I brought 

them out, and I told them ‘have 

a throw’, and one of the little 

bastards could throw the bloody 

thing! 

“I said, ‘I want you here Tuesday 

night’. Bugger me, he turns 

up Tuesday night. And he ended 

up getting a placing in the Canterbury 

champs. 

“That gives you a bit of joy in 

yourself, a bit of satisfaction.”


ANZAC DAY

Remembering our Anzacs 

“The darkness, calm and chill of the early morning; the sound of 

the single tap of the drum of the parade; the emotionless faces 

of the catafalque guard, and the mournful notes of Last Post 

sounded by a lone bugler, combine to give a feeling of deep 

solemnity. It is the intensity of the symbolism which contributes 

to its powerful impact upon participants; indeed what underlies its 

popularity. In a country with few public rituals, the Dawn Service 

continues to provide a sense of occasion as a meaningful ritual of 

remembrance.”

Every year Anzac Day is observed on April 25 by communities 

throughout New Zealand and Australia to remember those who have 

served and those who lost their lives in war. The term ANZAC is the 

acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and was first 

used in World War 1. These groups of soldiers back then were known 

as ‘the Anzacs’. 

Anzac commemorations may consist of one or more ceremonies – 

one at dawn (timed to coincide with the initial landings at Gallipoli 

by Australian troops who were the first ashore) and/or one later 

in the morning. The ceremonies are rich in tradition and generally 

begin with a parade of returned servicemen and military personnel 

followed by cadets, youth groups and local dignitaries. War veterans, 

proudly sporting their medals lead the parade, which leads to a local 

cenotaph or memorial gate where the ceremony includes a service 

with hymns, laying of wreaths, dedications, prayers and the Last Post 

played on a bugle. Morning tea follows and allows people to share 

memories and catch up with friends and neighbours. 

Anzac Day was first observed by servicemen in 1916 to mark the 

anniversary of New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing on the 

Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. It soon became a day where all New 

Zealanders and Australians took time to remember the men and 

women who perished in the Great War. In 1921, Anzac Day became 

an official holiday and by 1922 it was declared a full public holiday 

where shops, banks and hotels remained closed for the day. 

Symbol of remembrance 

The red (or Flanders) poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope 

all over the world and, in some countries, is worn on Armistice 

Day, however in New Zealand the red poppy is commonly worn 

on Anzac Day. The first Poppy Day appeal was on April 24 in 1922, 

where funds from the sales of small and large silk poppies helped 

relieve suffering in war-ravaged northern France. A paper version 

of the poppy is now sold by the Royal New Zealand Returned 

Services Association on Poppy Day to raise awareness for Anzac 

Day and funds for returned soldiers and their families and local 

communities.

Ageing ASX off the pace in compact market

perfectly adequate in a pricedriven 

model such as the ASX. 

Passenger space is okay by 

compact SUV standards although 

rear headroom isn’t great for taller 

back seat passengers. Rear hatch 

cargo space is modest and isn’t 

helped by the vehicle’s high floor 

area and lack of load height. 

The 8-inch smartphone link 

display audio system offers 

intuitive design to complement its 

Apple Carplay and Android Auto 

connectivity. The VRX doesn’t 

disappoint as the most lavishly 

appointed member of the ASX 

family. Underlining that status 

are leather-trimmed seats, rainsensing 

wipers and dusk sensing 

headlights. 

All models, including the VRX, 

have an integrated system of active 

and passive safety features. This 

comprises seven airbags (driver, 

driver’s knee, passenger, side and 

curtain), hill start assist, electronic 

brake-force distribution, active 

traction control, active stability 

control and multi-mode anti-lock 

braking system. 

A proven fully-independent 

suspension set-up lays the 

foundation for a competent 

rather than rewarding handling 

experience, and its effort to 

achieve aren’t helped by the 

vehicle’s extra ride height, that 

under hard cornering ups the 

body lean ante. 

The steering is light, and 

short on the levels of road feel 

to consistently deliver sufficient 

grip and road holding that would 

lift the vehicle out of the fair to 

middling handling zone. Overall, 

the ride and handling is acceptable 

for an aging, price driven compact 

urban SUV that remains a 

consistently strong seller here.
