Grand prix success opens 

doors for young ballerina

just so happy” was Tamison 

Soppet’s response to winning 

the junior women’s title at the 

prestigious Youth America 

Grand Prix ballet competition 

in New York. 

The 14-year-old danced her 

way to the top of the world 

stage in what is believed to be a 

New Zealand first. 

Tamison, who is from 

Lincoln and studies through 

correspondence, said she will 

visit Europe with her family to 

explore her options. 

In July she is heading to London 

to attend the Royal Ballet 

School, which is among the 

world’s top dance schools. 

She is following in the footsteps 

of famous dancers such 

as Alessandra Ferri, Margot 

Fonteyn, Marienela Nunez and 

Antoinette Sibley. 

“It is an honour to be able to 

claim the title. I am over the 

moon and forever grateful.” 

Despite her nerves and it 

being her first time competing 

in the grand prix, Tamison 

was determined to show just 

how much talent “a little Kiwi 

dancer” could have. 

She credits her success to 

hard work, practice, constant 

support and learning from her 

teacher Olivia Russell from 

Convergence Dance Studios in 

central Christchurch. 

Tamison, who dreams of 

being a professional dancer, 

wooed the 31 international 

judges with her performance.

Huts owners 

want year to 

consult over 

planned 

eviction

UPPER SELWYN Huts residents 

want another year to consult with 

the council about their future. 

About 100 hut owners are fighting 

the council over their planned 

eviction from the crown-owned 

land by 2039. 

Under the current timeline, 

residents have till July 15 to give 

feedback on the new deed of 

licence. The final licence will be 

released on August 7, with the 

council to vote on it at its August 

14 meeting. The new licence will 

be active from October 1. 

The timeline was recently 

extended by about three months. 

Residents have now requested a 

further 12 months. 

The request comes after a public 

meeting was held with residents, 

council staff, chief executive 

Sharon Mason and Mayor Sam 

Broughton.

Grim financial outlook sees 

club vote for sale of venue 

LINCOLN CLUB members have 

voted overwhelmingly to sell the 

pub business it operates from the 

Famous Grouse Hotel. 

A special general meeting was 

held on Sunday to determine 

the fate of the business which 

club members were told had 

lost money for the past two 

years. Club officials painted a 

gloomy outlook for the future 

with difficult trading conditions 

combined with being told by its 

landlord the lease would not be 

extended beyond 2029. 

The landlord said the hotel had 

been brought into “disrepute” 

over its liquor licensing issues. 

Police and the council liquor 

licensing unit had opposed the 

pub’s licence renewal, prompted 

by issues with university student 

focused events, and the Mr 

Grouse contest. 

The pub eventually kept its 

licence with conditions. But it 

cost about $70,000 in legal fees, 

impacting on the profitability of 

the pub, members were told. 

The Lincoln Club has operated 

the business at the Grouse since 

2009 under its motto ‘the club in 

SALE: The Famous Grouse Hotel will be sold after Lincoln 

Club members voted to put the venue on the market.

The meeting was robust, and 

sometimes testy, as members 

asked questions about the pub’s 

finances and why it had got into 

trouble over the past two years. 

Early into the meeting, a call 

was made from the floor for it 

to be adjourned until details of 

the Famous Grouse 2009 Ltd 

accounts were given to members 

to consider before any vote was 

taken. The meeting continued 

and the member who raised the 

issue did not pursue an adjournment. 

The Lincoln Club will continue 

to exist, but when the lease is 

sold it won’t be the operator of 

the Grouse. 

That is likely to be headed by 

Shaughn McNabb, who owns the 

Bush Inn Tavern in partnership 

with Crusaders halfback Mitch 

Drummond. Drummond is also 

understood to be involved in the 

purchase of the Grouse lease. 

Club president Brian Humm 

said due diligence was continuing 

and part of that would 

involve discussion over whether 

the club would still be able to 

host its Tuesday club nights at 

the Grouse, and other benefits 

for members. 

It was hoped in the future the 

club would operate again in hospitality 

at another location. 

McNabb, who plays rugby for 

Lincoln, was introduced to members 

at the meeting. 

Humm told the meeting selling 

the lease now would mean a 

better price than if the club left 

it until closer to 2029. Delaying 

a sale would impact on and 

potentially drain the assets of the 

Lincoln Club. 

The club owns the Grouse’s car 

park, which is likely to be leased 

to the new owners. It is part of 

the due diligence process.

DRIVER FLEES AFTER 

CRASHING IN DITCH. 

Police are looking for a driver who 

fled the scene of a single vehicle 

crash near Lincoln on Sunday. 

Emergency services were called 

to the crash on Weedons Rd at 

8.20am. A police spokesperson 

said they arrived to find the car in 

a ditch and an injured passenger. 

“Police are following active lines 

of inquiry to locate and speak 

with the driver of the vehicle,” the 

spokesperson said. 

HOUSE THREATENED BY 

STUBBLE FIRE 

A house was under threat after a 

stubble burn-off last Wednesday. 

The fire on Jollies Rd near 

Southbridge was permitted, but 

grew out of control and a hedge 

caught fire. Southbridge chief fire 

officer Shane King said the flames 

were about 8m from the house. 

Crews from five brigades spent 

two and a half hours fighting the 

blaze.

considering increasing speed limits on some state highways, debate has 

started on whether the limits should be raised on SH75. 

MP makes U-turn on

75. 

It comes after she received crash data 

from police Canterbury 

rural area commander 

Peter Cooper, which 

Weenink says shows a 

decrease in crashes after 

speed limits were reduced 

in September 2022. 

The speed limit was 

reduced from 100km/h to 

80km/h between Halswell 

and Little River, and 

lowered to 60km/h in most 

sections of the Little River 

to Akaroa stretch. 

National MP Weenink 

will now submit against 

raising the SH75 speed 

limit when her coalition 

government considers 

which state highways to 

increase speed limits on. 

The review will be part of 

the Government’s “accelerate NZ” 

plan.

The data, going back to 2015, shows a 

decrease in fatal and other crashes along 

the whole state highway from Halswell 

to Akaroa after the speed limit change, 

Weenink said. 

“To me the police data is very clear that 

it’s been successful in improving safety. 

Nobody wants to be the person who says ‘I 

want to see more crashes’.” 

Weenink had the goal of restoring the 

higher limits while campaigning, as long 

as it was determined to be safe. 

Cooper and Weenink declined to release 

the data to Selwyn Times. 

Weenink said she could not share the 

data because it was confidential and she 

did not want to break police trust. 

A police spokesperson said the 

figures Cooper shared were “very brief, 

anecdotal numbers’’.

They were not “official statistics” so 

police were unable to share them publicly, 

the spokesperson said. 

Crash data obtained by Selwyn Times 

for the straighter sections of SH75, from 

Halswell to Little River from January 2021 

to the present, shows the 80km/h speed 

limit had a marginal impact on decreasing 

crashes. 

There were eight serious crashes in the 

area before the speed limit change and 

seven afterwards. 

For all crashes, there were 30 crashes 

before the speed limit change and 24 

afterwards. 

Weenink now believes the straighter 

sections of the highway from Halswell 

to Little River should also stay at 

80km/h, saying the different data she 

received also showed a decrease in crashes 

there. 

“I am open to any discussions around 

that, of course.” 

AA research and road safety manager 

Dylan Thomsen said the association 

believes the section from Halswell to 

Little River should have a speed limit of 

100km/h, which then reduces towards 

Akaroa. 

“It is a section of highway that has 

low-medium risk levels compared to 

other highways around the country, but 

becomes twisty and windy after Little 

River,” he said. 

“Our preference would be to see the 

roads improved to be safer rather than 

lowering limits.” 

Weenink said she will make a submission 

against increasing the speed limit 

once the Ministry of Transport sets up a 

review process. 

“As soon as I get information about that, 

then I’ll make a submission.”

competition saw about 2000 

dancers from 30 countries compete 

in classical, contemporary 

and ballet scholarship sections.

Council considers action on nitrate levels

GREENPEACE is pleased to see 

the district council is planning to 

take action over nitrate levels in 

drinking water. 

Recently Greenpeace, which 

regularly tests water, held a community 

day where people could 

bring samples of their tap water 

to be tested. 

Results showed the town supply 

in Darfield had a nitrate level 

of 5.27 mg/l and Kirwee had a 

nitrate level of 5.37 mg/l for nonfiltered 

water.

Its April numbers showed four 

supplies with above 5 mg/l. They 

were Darfield bore one (6.3 mg/l) 

Darfield bore two (5.2 mg/l), 

Kirwee bore (5.99 mg/l) and Te 

Pirita bore (5.58 mg/l) 

While all of the district’s supplies 

are below the legal requirements, 

Greenpeace spokesperson 

Amanda Larsson said research 

shows anything above 5 mg/l is 

concerning. 

“Emerging evidence has found 

that pregnant people drinking 

water with nitrate levels above 

5 mg/l are at higher risk of 

pre-term birth – and yet for 

many rural communities, this 

is the water coming out of their 

kitchen tap,” Larsson said. 

A common source of nitrate 

in the soil is the use of synthetic 

nitrate fertiliser in farming. 

As part of the district council’s 

draft 2024-34 Long Term Plan, it 

is looking to spend $5.3 million 

over 10 years investigating how 

to lower nitrates in supplies with 

higher levels. 

“To make sure we provide our 

community with the highest 

quality water at a reasonable 

cost, we are proposing to investigate 

whether we can centralise 

some of our water treatment 

to come from one low nitrate 

source,” said district council 

head of asset management Murray 

England. 

Larsson said she was happy to 

see the council taking action. 

“I think it’s great that they are 

taking it seriously and they are 

starting to investigate it. 

“Ten years is a long time, especially 

since these towns already 

have 5 mg/l.” 

The district council said collecting 

water from a central 

source would also produce cost 

savings in the long term.

While the district council 

manages town supplies, it falls to 

Environment Canterbury to address 

nitrates in waterways and 

groundwater. 

ECan said on its website over 

the past 10 years, implementation 

of the Canterbury water 

management strategy and Canterbury 

land and water regional 

plan have started to lower nitrate 

levels. 

“Some of the impacts of these 

new rules are only starting to 

take effect, and there is a lot of 

work to be done by farmers, 

industry and Environment

Larsson said Greenpeace’s

“That means we need to look at 

land use and we need to reduce 

the amount of synthetic nitrate

Canterbury president Karl Dean 

said farmers reduce nitrate 

leeching into groundwater 

where possible, but stopping the 

use of nitrates altogether would 

mean a large reduction in herd 

sizes. 

“You’d have to reduce the 

amount of livestock raised in 

Canterbury by about one-third,” 

Dean said. 

He said farmers applying 

fertiliser in smaller but more 

frequent sprays have reduced 

the amount of leeching into 

groundwater.

Vintage connoisseur preps 

for Australian pageant 

ROLLESTON resident Sharvelle 

McKay is preparing to head 

across the Tasman to compete in 

the Australian Pinup Pageant. 

MacKay, otherwise known 

as Miss Chevelle Charlotte, 

will participate in the event in 

Victoria on May 25. 

She is one of two New 

Zealanders among the 16 

finalists. The other is Hollie 

Henderson from Hamilton. 

“It’s such a privilege to be 

accepted as a finalist where we 

will show our modern twist 

on vintage fashion on stage,” 

MacKay said. 

“I have been working hard 

with my seamstress Oli’s 

Handmade to put my looks 

together for the stage.” 

Mackay is a long-time fan 

of all things vintage. She first 

developed the passion travelling 

in her family’s vintage cars, and 

performing in musicals at school 

as a teenager. 

Miss Vintage Australasia, 

launched in New Zealand three 

years ago as part of Vintage Fest

Call for Malvern Community Board 

to stay, have more responsibility 

IF IN THE very near future 

Malvern and Ellesmere Wards 

are merged, the geographical 

scope will be from the 

mountains to the sea (Arthur’s 

Pass to Southbridge) – a travel 

distance of just under 150km. 

The Selwyn District’s ward 

structural system is logically 

based on population, not geographical 

size. However, if Malvern 

was to lose our community 

board as a direct communication 

line to the council, we would be 

reliant on councillor/s to represent 

the varied economic, cultural, 

social and infrastructure 

needs across a 150km region. 

When Tim Harris (council 

executive director enabling 

services) talks about bureaucracy 

as a negative when it comes to 

the Malvern Community Board, 

he negates the basis of it providing 

a reasonable pathway to 

accomplish community goals, a 

grass-roots approach where the 

voices of the people are central to 

any sound decision-making. 

Yes, Tim is right the community 

board must deliver value to 

ratepayers to justify its costs but 

let’s get behind our board and 

hold them to a higher standard 

than what the executive board 

representative believes they are

The Selwyn District Council

stop treating the ratepayers as a 

endless money box.

people who would like a sealed 

extension of their road. 

• Spending millions of dollars 

destroying the angle parking at 

the Lincoln shopping area on 

Gerald St.

more and more staff, and 

make the hand fit the glove. If it

It would seem difficult for one 

councillor to be able to cover the 

approximately 5000 sq kms of 

the Malvern Ward detailed in 

one of the options in the consultation. 

In this or the three councillor 

option combining with 

Ellesmere, we believe the only 

option to maintain functional 

and local representation would 

be to maintain a community 

board in some form. 

In rural areas, we believe 

face to face contact is essential. 

Internet is unreliable, emails 

can be misinterpreted and by 

means cutting back services and 

events, do so.

Whilst I am less than thrilled 

at the prospect of paying higher 

rates, I have to accept this is at 

least in part due to New Zealand 

massively under funding its 

infrastructure over the last few 

decades. 

According to some estimates, 

we need to spend an extra $120- 

180 billion over the next 30 years 

on Three Waters infrastructure 

alone. In some areas of the country, 

it is expected a 100 per cent 

rates increase is required to cover 

these costs. 

having elected members on the 

ground, social gatherings can 

bind communities and support 

mental health. 

As a comparison from historical 

data the ward sizes are 

about: Rolleston 300 sq kms, 

Ellesmere 900 sq kms. Springs 

300 sq kms, Malvern 5000 sq 

kms. The Selwyn District is 

6500 sq kms. 

This means that Malvern is 

approximately 77 per cent of the 

SDC area. How many elected 

representatives do you deserve? 

The cost of the Malvern Community 

Board (five members) is 

currently a targeted rate of $24 a 

year per ratepayer. 

This is reduced in the Long 

Term Plan consultation document 

to $19, probably because of 

the increase in population in the 

current Malvern Ward. 

The current $24 can be broken 

down as follows: GST $3.12, 

council support $12.72, member 

remuneration $7.20, operating 

costs $0.96. 

The overall cost of the community 

board is stated as 

$189,600. This figure can also be 

broken down as follows: Council 

support $101,322 (53 per cent), 

member remuneration $57,416 

(30 per cent), GST $24,731 (13 

per cent), operating costs $6132 

(4 per cent). 

As local councils are responsible 

for funding Three Waters and 

their primary source of income is 

through rates, their only option is 

to increase these accordingly. 

What’s sorely needed is for 

the money collected by central 

government (PAYE, GST) to be 

more evenly distributed to the 

regions to fund these infrastructure 

upgrades, rather than being 

concentrated in Wellington. 

New Zealand is one of the 

most centralised countries in the 

world, and is the only one mandating 

its 67 local councils fund 

critical infrastructure through 

the collection of rates.

ANZAC DAY was one of 

remembrance for many who 

turned out to the range of 

parades and ceremonies across 

the district. 

Rolleston’s new Anzac venue 

was considered a success 

following its trial at the new 

town centre venue. 

Anzac committee chair, 

Greg Knowles said he had 

overwhelmingly 

positive feedback 

from those who 

attended, with 

many saying it 

was the town’s 

best Anzac 

service yet.

New faces bring boost for Waihora

Schulte has praised the work 

of his young charges after 

an injury-hit team held on 

for a narrow victory over 

Southbridge in their Luisetti 

Seeds combined country clash. 

Waihora had 10 players out 

injured – but their replacements 

proved more than handy in the 

20-16 win at Rhodes Park. 

“We managed to call upon a 

couple of colts and a couple of 

div 2 boys that stood up for us, 

(colts players) Shaun O’Leary 

was one of our three players of 

the day, he scored a try as well, 

and Jed (Symes) at fullback 

played really well too. 

“Pretty impressive for the 

young guys just to come in first 

up and play so well. 

“It’s really promising for us 

moving forward, just for everyone 

to step up and believe that 

they can pull it off was probably 

the biggest take away from that 

game for us.” 

Schulte said his side held on 

thanks to some strong defence. 

“The last ten minutes, Southbridge 

were camped on our 

line, so we had to hold them 

out and we managed to get a 

penalty, which was nice and 

relieved the pressure.” 

He hoped a few absentees 

from the win would be fit for 

their next assignment away to 

Rakaia on Saturday. 

“It’s looking like we will have 

about four or five guys coming 

back, so that helps out a bit. 

“It’s just been a big workload 

for some of the other guys, so 

hopefully it’ll allow us to give 

some of those boys that have 

been there for the past four 

weeks a bit more of a rest.” 

At Lincoln, captain Caleb 

McStay said they’re getting 

closer to their first win of the 

season after a 31-all draw with 

Oxford on Saturday. 

McStay said they started 

strong but couldn’t keep the 

momentum going in their 

drawn match. 

“We used the ball well and got 

some pretty good tries early on.

“But then, as it got a bit later

win following their 36-21 defeat 

at the hands of Methven on Saturday 

– in a match where competition 

points count towards 

both the combined country and 

Coleman Shield tables. 

McStay said Lincoln wouldn’t 

take West Melton lightly. 

“You can’t really go off previous 

results for the last few 

weeks. 

“Just because any team on 

their day can show up and play 

some good rugby. 

“Obviously we haven’t had 

our first win either, so yeah, I 

think it’ll be a good game.”

netball champions Burnham A 

are anticipating a “challenging” 

season following the loss of one 

of their key players. 

Shooter Olivia Jones has moved 

to Devonport in Auckland, but 

Burnham coach Denise Keno 

said they were fortunate to have 

a capable replacement – Sarah 

Murphy, who moves south 

from Manawatu. Both players 

have relocated due to military 

postings. 

“It’ll be interesting to see how 

she (Murphy) goes,” Keno said. 

“She’s doing well so far, she’s 

doing a really good job. 

“I think she’s actually friends 

with Olivia Jones as well, so that’s 

quite nice that she’s falling into 

her boots, as such.” 

Burnham’s first task this season

academy team will embark on the 

club’s first-ever overseas trip in 

September. 

The side, who plays in the 

Canterbury development league 

15th grade, will compete in the 

premier invitational tournament 

on the Gold Coast – the largest 

football tournament in Australia, 

with more than 400 teams 

competing from U8 to U16 agegroups. 

Selwyn U15, who are coached 

by Jacob Grosvenor, a midfielder 

for the club’s Southern League 

side, will be fundraising throughout 

the year to raise the $45,000 

required. 

Team manager Alice Sunde 

said they had a number of events

“We’re doing all the usual 

sausage sizzles, but we’ve had to 

step it up,” she said.

GARDENING 

AUTUMN IS a great time to 

tackle jobs in the garden that 

the heavy summer heat doesn’t 

permit, like getting your lawn 

back into shape. 

Plus it’s an ideal time to sow 

winter crops if you haven’t 

already. 

Here are five tasks to get you 

started: 

1. The beauty of growing fruit 

trees at home means harvesting 

fruit when they are at their best. 

Tree ripening enhances flavour 

and results in juicy, delicious 

fruit picked right at their peak. 

The last of summer fruit crops 

like peaches, nectarines, grapes 

and passion fruit are now nearing 

an end. Use bird netting to 

ensure our feathered friends 

don’t steal the last of the harvest. 

2. Harvest remaining summer 

crops as they come to an end 

and start sowing and planting 

winter veges. This will allow the 

roots of plants time to establish 

before temperatures drop 

much further and growth slows. 

Winter crops include beetroot, 

broccoli, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, 

silver beet, spinach, 

swedes and turnips 

3. It is important to ensure 

plants enter their dormant season 

in the best health. Give them 

a final application of fertiliser 

so they’re in good condition 

to withstand cooler and wetter 

winter months and are ready for 

growth in spring. In cooler areas 

apply fertiliser to fruit trees, 

ornamental plants, shrubs and 

roses, but don’t let that task run 

into next week, the end of April 

is generally the cut-off point. 

4. Summer flowering annuals 

will be at the end of their growing 

season. It’s time to remove 

old plants and prepare beds 

for winter flowering displays.

the winter. Plant cornflowers 

now for a display in early 

spring. 

MUST-HAVE: Onions are a staple in every kitchen. They are 

easy to grow and enjoy having companions. 

Prepare soil by adding in plenty 

of compost and mix in well with 

existing soil to a spade depth. 

Some favourite winter annuals 

to grow are; alyssum, calendulas, 

cinerarias, cornflowers, larkspur, 

pansies, poppies, primular, 

stocks, sweet william and violas. 

Grow them in the garden or 

containers to brighten up the 

ONIONS ARE one of must-have 

vegetables to grow in your own 

garden. 

The problem is, once you start 

growing and enjoying homegrown 

food, the list of must-haves 

seems to grow too. But onions are 

at the top of that list and should be 

grown in every vegetable garden, 

and don’t stop there plant red 

onions as well 

Stagger-plant with spring onions, 

regular brown pukekohe long 

keeper onions, pearl drop onions 

and red bunching spring onions. 

For the newbie gardeners 

out there, stagger planting (or 

staggering) is when you plant a 

few seedlings of the same varieties 

(ie broccoli or onions) every 

few weeks to ensure you have a 

constant supply of produce ready 

to harvest. 

You can grow onions pretty 

much anywhere in the garden – 

they also grow well in pots. But 

make sure the soil is friable (goes 

crumbly when you touch it). If 

it’s not, simply give it a good dig 

over and add a bit of compost and 

fertiliser. 

Red and pukekohe long keeper 

onions need to be planted 10cm 

apart. And if you’re growing them 

in rows, make the rows 20cm 

apart. 

Companion plant spinach in between 

the rows. Or you could try 

growing spring onions in-between. 

They will be ready to harvest 

winter months. If planting in 

containers, toss out old potting 

mix and use new mix prior to 

planting. Old mix will be lacking 

nutrients and over time can 

break down and cause poor 

drainage. 

5. Early May is an excellent 

time for lawn renovation or the 

laying of new lawn as this coincides 

with the cooler temperatures 

and more consistent rainfall. 

Use a lawn patch for tidying 

up smaller areas. Lawn 

fertiliser can now be safely 

applied in cooler regions where 

there is reasonable rainfall. If 

there is a dry spell, water regularly 

to ensure the fertilisers are 

washed into the lawn. 

Getting to know your onions 

much earlier at around six to eight 

weeks, so will be out of the rows 

before the larger onions need the 

space. Simply, plant your spring 

onions around 4cm apart from the 

next. 

You can harvest your spring 

onions at any time. But the longer 

you leave them the bigger they will 

get until they go to seed. 

Your larger onions will take 

around 20-24 weeks to get ready, 

you can tell when they are because 

they start to pop right out of the 

ground. 

If they start to flower, harvest 

them as onions that have started to 

bolt or go to seed don’t store very 

well. Don’t worry if they’re green, 

you can still eat them.

Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture Inc 

(ESAI) is a farmer-led organisation in 

Selwyn that has been supporting farmers 

for over 20 years. ESAI advocates for its 

members on legislative matters, shares 

information and project resource on 

sustainable farming practices and creates 

networks to nurture the wellbeing of 

Ellesmere’s farming community and 

land. 

ESAI is well known across the 

district for Project Tinaku, which was 

funded from the Ministry for Primary 

Industries’ (MPI) Jobs for Nature 

initiative until July 2023 and successfully 

executed 60 restoration projects across 

Ellesmere. While restoration work 

continues, ESAI’s new project has a 

different focus – enabling farmers to 

educate themselves and upskill about the 

business of farming. 

The organisation has secured extended 

funding across two and a half years 

from MPI’s Integrated Farm Planning 

Accelerator Fund for the “Enhancing 

Ellesmere – Integrated Farm Planning” 

project. 

This project focusses on Integrated 

Farm Planning (IFP), providing a 

framework of modules that bring 

together different aspects of farm 

business and help farmers adapt, 

respond and progress through change. 

Through regular workshops, the project 

also brings together a community of 

farmers as a natural support group. 

The first module, offered late last year, 

covered business and financial planning, 

goals, risk assessment and the farm 

team. January saw the people, health & 

safety, communication and leadership 

workshop. 

Now in May, here are three workshops, 

all to be held at Lakeside Soldiers 

Memorial Hall (and including delicious 

refreshments!): 

• Thurs 2 May, 10–2pm, Free (contact 

ESAI to see if there’s last-minute 

availability!) – Nailing Winter Grazing, 

facilitated by Rural Consulting 

• Thurs 9 May, 8.30–4.30,

On a mission: 

recreational horse riders 


There’s a nationwide advocacy 

movement afoot, and it’s gaining 

momentum fast. Local groups of 

recreational horse riders from across the 

country are joining forces and building 

a nationwide voice, advocating for 

planning and regulation change. 

The New Zealand Equestrian Advocacy 

Network (NZEAN) launched its website 

earlier this year, with this vision: 

“Secure, safe recreational horse riding 

in New Zealand for current and future 

generations, by protecting and promoting 

equestrian access to all public places 

including roads, trails, pathways, highcountry 

pack-trails, beaches and Crown 

lands.” 

Currently, there’s a big focus on 

Council longterm plans. Two advocacy 

groups from North and South 

Canterbury, representing about 500 

recreational riders, recently made 

combined submissions to local councils 

and to Environment Canterbury, and are 

urging Timaru District horse riders to do 

the same. 

What are the issues? 

Horses are classified by NZTA as a 

Light Vehicle. The result of this historical 

classification is that no co-funding 

arrangement exists between NZTA and 

Councils to provide for horse riders, as 

there are for cycling and walking projects. 

However, in reality, horse and rider 

are vulnerable road users. NZTA has 

guidelines about driving slowly and with 

“courtesy” near horses, but NZEAN is 

advocating for Regional Transport Plans 

and campaigns to educate motorists in 

the importance of passing slowly (20km) 

and at a safe distance (2m), to prevent 

harm to horses, riders and motorists.

Riding in Selwyn 

West Melton Forest is part of the 

Waimakariri River Regional Park, 

managed by Environment Canterbury. 

It is well set up for horse riding, with 

a 10km marked trail, float parking, 

hitching posts and additional areas for 

horse and cart use. While walkers and 

runners are welcome, horses have right 

of way. 

Otherwise in Selwyn, there’s nothing 

official – riders need to use private land

tend to have wide grassy verges, making 

riding on quiet roads relatively safe, 

depending on motorist behaviour. 

Local rider Corey Woodward will be 

making a submission to Selwyn District 

Council (SDC), proposing that the 35Ha 

district park planned near Rolleston 

includes horse riding trails. He believes: 

“SDC isn’t anti horse riding as such, it’s 

just that the needs of riders have been 

overlooked – we need a voice at the 

planning table.” 

This sentiment is being echoed across 

the country – watch this space.

Rural postal service – still a treasure 


Like many rural households across 

Selwyn, we recently received a letter. 

While that in itself is a surprising event 

these days, we were then confused to 

see that it was from NZPost. (Still, to be 

fair, how else would they communicate 

– email???) 

Knowing that NZPost had been in the 

news for planning to reduce staff and 

services, we opened it with trepidation. 

And sure enough, our Saturday rural 

delivery will be phased out over the next 

year. But no criticisms from me. 

I write this as an ex-townie. In a big 

city (well, Christchurch), anything to do 

with post is a nightmare.

the door. If you’re waiting for a parcel 

delivery, chances are you’re still waiting. 

So many times I’ve watched couriers

struggling to remember this phrase –

When we moved to RD3, our new 

postie quickly spotted our arrival and 

knocked with a friendly greeting and 

the right form to transfer our details. 

Proactive, efficient and helpful, that’s 

Dave. (He’s also the second-mostfrequent 

man to see me in my dressing 

gown, but that reflects more on me than 

it does on him.) 

Since another simple fact of rural 

life is that the postie may be the only 

outsider we see in a day, a quick chat 

is always nice. In one of these chats, 

NZPost again surprised me. Turns out 

that Dave received the Queen’s Service 

Medal in 2022, for 40 years of local and 

national service to bowls. Wow. Kudos 

to NZPost for their high calibre of staff! 

Everything about rural delivery is a 

treasure. If they need Saturdays off to 

keep the service more sustainable, that is 

fine by me.

Hilux overhaul brings a more supple drive 

TOYOTA IS looking to take the 

sales fight to the top selling new 

Ford Ranger with some upgrades 

to its current Hilux launched in 

2015, and now among the oldest 

Japanese utes on our market. 

With an all-new replacement 

still a while away, this version is 

feeling the sales heat from a bevy 

of newer rivals. 

The aura and power surrounding 

the Hilux brand combined 

with a large and loyal customer 

base will help it in the sales scrap. 

However, that will only go so 

far, and Toyota has responded 

with some worthwhile changes 

to its flagship Hilux 4WD SR5 

Cruiser. 

The major talking point among 

ute aficionados is the upgraded 

suspension and wider track, 

with increases of around 140mm 

front and rear. One thing you 

notice almost immediately is the 

substantial 20mm increase in rise 

height to around 250mm. 

This should be plenty for 

more adventurous owners to 

comfortably navigate even the 

trickiest cross-country terrain 

and protrusions, such as rocks, 

and branches. 

To accommodate the track 

increase, Toyota engineers 

overhauled the Hilux suspension 

by extending the front arm and 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

stabiliser bar length and adjusting 

the shock absorber angle for 

greater efficiency. At the rear, 

axle length is increased, and 

the suspension dampers moved 

further out. 

For the first time, and in the 

quest for improved cornering 

stability and ride comfort, we 

have a Hilux sporting a rear 

stabiliser bar. How radical is that! 

As a result of the suspension 

changes, roll rigidity has 

been enhanced by 20 per 

cent, improving steering feel 

when cornering and changing 

either traffic or farm lanes. To 

accommodate the increased track 

width, wider over-fenders and 

mud flaps are fitted, while the 

front body extension is widened 

to integrate with the front 

bumper and fog lights. 

More effective stopping 

power is provided by new rear 

ventilated disc brakes in place of 

the former drum brake set-up, 

while slightly larger front discs 

are convincing show stoppers. 

Those seeking a more 

upmarket ute will find it in the 

premium $63,390 SR5 Cruiser 

six-speed automatic being 

reviewed here. 

Toyota’s drive-away pricing 

covers all on road cost bases 

with WOF, registration, 1000 

kilometres of road user charges, 

a full tank of fuel, fixed price 

servicing package, floor mats, 

and decidedly average three 

year or 100,000km warranty. If 

owners meet certain conditions, 

the warranty that can be nudged 

out to five years or 150,000km, 

provided the scheduled servicing 

is carried out at a Toyota dealership. 

In reality all this does is 

bring the warranty into line with 

most its competitors. 

Ample power is provided 

by Toyota’s super dependable 

150kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel. 

There’s an abundance of low 

speed pulling power with 500Nm 

more torque than the motor it 

replaced three years ago. 

This additional grunt is the 

result of modifications to the 

cylinder block, pistons, turbo 

design and revision to the 

cooling system. 

The good news doesn’t end 

there, with the extra muscle 

ready to roll up its sleeves and 

get down to some serious work 

sooner, with 80 per cent of the 

motor’s substantial bank of 

torque available to draw on from 

just 1200rpm. On the open road, 

the engine is strong and effortless 

in everything it does. 

In low-speed town driving, 

I felt noise levels were overly 

intrusive for a premium ute, 

especially given the additional 

sound-deadening material 

allotted to models at this end of 

Hilux food chain. 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality 

7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Value for 

money: 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating. 

Overall points out of 10: 7 

The motor revels in off-road 

terrain with plenty of throttle response 

and pulling power to take 

charge. The six-speed automatic is 

an‘ oldie’ but definitely a ‘goodie’ 

and perfectly paired to the motor, 

and it should be as they’ve 

been working as a top-notch gear 

changing combo for eight years. 

Thanks to the wide body 

enhancements, the double cab 

feels bigger and more generously 

provisioned than before. It’s 

loaded generously with car-like 

features such as a driver seat 

height adjustment and there is a 

telescopic and height adjustable 

steering column. The steering 

wheel houses multi-media and 

phone controls with Bluetooth 

capability for added convenience. 

The touchscreen has also been 

upgraded and the audio system 

now includes Apple CarPlay and 

Android Auto. 

The premium ute push continues 

with niceties such as push 

button engine start, carpeted 

cabin, satellite navigation, LED 

daytime running lights and 

chrome exterior door handles. 

It’s not done there, with 

standard features such as a ninespeaker 

audio system, 18-inch 

alloys, leather seating, fully size 

alloy spare wheel and a driver 

seats with eight-way power 

adjustments. 

There’s an equally impressive 

arsenal of safety kit allotted to 

the wide track Hilux 4WD SR5 

Cruiser. 

This is delivered by Toyota’s 

acclaimed Safety Sense package 

that adds a pre-collision system 

with autonomous emergency 

braking for vehicles, pedestrians 

and cyclists, plus dynamic radar 

cruise control, lane departure 

alert and road sign assist. A 

reversing camera puts you in 

the picture and takes out the 

guesswork when backing. 

A clever re-work of the 

leaf spring rear end and coil 

sprung double wishbone front 

suspension improves driver 

and passenger comfort both on 

and off road. More compliant 

dampers and spring suspension 

settings, have conjured up a more 

supple ride than the firmer load 

carrying biased suspension of the 

work orientated SR version. 

With the extra 20mm of 

ground clearance there is more 

body roll for the driver to 

contend with when pushing the 

pace through sweeping corners, 

and over undulating roads. 

Drivability would go up a level 

or two if more work went into 

tuning the steering so it’s sharper 

and more responsive. It lacks 

those two critical ingredients, 

and consequently is off the classleading 

ride and handling pace 

set by the excellent Ford Ranger.
