CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High 

School will open their defence of 

the Miles Toyota Premiership 

title in a rematch of last year’s 

final. 

Boys’ High travel north to take 

on Nelson College on Saturday 

– they beat Nelson 30-26 in the 

final last season. 

Assistant coach and rugby 

master Mike Drury said taking 

on Nelson had become the 

biggest game on the calendar in 

recent years. 

“Over the last decade or so it 

has become the really big game 

for us each year. 

“Nelson are consistently a 

top-four side, they’ve had a lot 

of success in that competition in 

recent years, so they are definitely 

a team to beat, and they’ve 

become a real benchmark side of 

the competition.”

Youth Hub gets $300k boost from Rotary

STAGE ONE construction of 

the country’s first purpose-built 

youth hub has been boosted with 

a $300,000 donation from the 

Riccarton Rotary Youth Trust. 

Youth Hub Christchurch is 

under construction in at 109 

Salisbury St, with a focus on 

providing services young people 

need to improve and maintain 

their mental health. 

Construction of the $21 million 

stage one – which includes a 

supported housing wing with 23 

bedrooms, a wraparound services 

block for youth providers to work 

from and an outdoor activities 

courtyard – is expected to be 

completed in July. 

The Youth Hub Trust 

will then spend the rest 

of the year fitting out the 

facility before opening it 

progressively from late 

2024.

Nature challenge reveals web of biodiversity 

DR FRANK Ashwood plunged 

his hands into a compost pile and 

scattered the decaying material 

onto a sheet, then waited and saw 

movement. 

His prey led him on a merry 

chase around the small community 

garden plot at Canterbury 

University campus. 

But the soil biologist managed 

to corner the invertebrate and 

collect his prize – a macro-photo 

of Maratus griseus, a white-banded 

house jumper posing for the 

camera. 

Those are the lengths scientists, 

citizen scientists and city council 

rangers went 

to as they catalogued 

as much 

biodiversity as 

possible from all 

corners of Greater 

Christchurch 

during the City 

Nature Challenge 

from April 26-29.

into nature and capture photos 

of plants, animals and fungi then 

log them on the iNaturalist app. 

Christchurch made the most 

observations of any city in 

Oceania with more than 20,000 

registered during the challenge. 

A prizegiving held last week 

saw Ashwood take home the 

“most inspiring invertebrate” 

award.

was selected for his impressive

will add significantly to our 

knowledge of the mite fauna of 

our city,” he said. 

“Frank also added lots of 

other significant 

invertebrate observations,

“There was a focus on the 

former red zone area this year, so 

it was great to see the numbers of 

people coming out and logging 

the biodiversity throughout the 

corridor,” city council red zone 

manager David Little said. 

“The most unwanted find of 

the challenge was logged in the 

Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor 

– yellow flag iris – but it’s better 

we know it’s there so we can deal 

with it.” 

“It was especially great to see 

the senior class from South New 

Brighton School join the bioblitz 

and take a closer look at what’s 

living all around them, hidden in 

plain sight.” 

“The team did a great job organising 

events this year and will 

be back with more exciting finds 

in 2025,” Little said.

Caring for the biggest mother of all 

A MAMMOTH effort was 

undertaken over the weekend to 

remove rubbish from the Avon- 

Heathcote Estuary and Lyttelton 

Harbour. 

More than 50 groups took part 

in the Mother of All Clean Ups, 

held annually on the Saturday 

before Mother’s Day. 

From 10am to noon, volunteers 

from schools, community groups 

and workplaces were busy 

chatting and picking up litter. 

The final weigh in was 2.06 

tons. Last year it was 2.37 tons.

last season’s squad – Drury said 

the side will rely on those with 

more experience to lead the 

team. 

In particular, third-year players 

Will Haig, Finn McLeod and 

James Moore. 

“Normally there will be a 

single person that has played two 

years previously, but to have the 

three third-year players this year 

does give a lot of experience,” 

said Drury. 

“Having those boys in the 

team with that experience, 

leading the other lads, will be 

important.” 

Drury said a lot rests on the 

shoulders of Haig, a talented 

first-five-eighth who has 

represented Canterbury in touch 

and was in the Crusaders junior 

camp last year. 

“He’s vastly experienced, one 

of our third-year players. 

“We’re expecting a lot from 

him to steer the team around the 

park.” 

Drury highlighted a few new 

players to keep an eye on. 

“Jonty Leary, he’s our blindside 

flanker, he’s come up from the 

under-15s last year.

Deliciously nutty 

delights to perk 

up your autumn 

If the shorter days and 

cooler nights are urging you 

to turn on the oven, try these 

Nigel Slater recipes making 

use of crunchy nuts for added 

texture and flavour 

Pistachio and lemon cake 

Serves 8-10 

Ingredients 

250g butter 

250g caster sugar 

100g shelled pistachios 

1 lemon 

3 eggs 

100g ground almonds 

1 tsp rosewater 

75g plain flour 

To decorate 

150g icing sugar 

2 Tbsp lemon juice 

2 Tbsp, chopped pistachios 

2 Tbsp crushed crystalised rose petals 

A few dried roses (optional) 

Method 

• Preheat the oven to 150°C fan. Line a 

20cm loose-bottomed cake tin with baking 

parchment. 

• Cream the butter and sugar in a food 

mixer until very light and fluffy. 

• Process the pistachios to coarse 

crumbs using a food processor (you can 

chop them by hand if you like). Finely 

grate the zest of the lemon. 

• Break the eggs into a small bowl. 

Beat them with a fork, then add to the 

butter and sugar a little at a time with the 

mixer still beating. If there is any sign of 

curdling, add a little of the flour. Add the 

pistachios, ground almonds, lemon zest 

and rosewater. Lastly, mix in the flour. 

• Transfer the batter into the cake tin, 

then bake in the preheated oven for about 

45-50 minutes until springy to the touch. 

Remove from the oven, leave to settle for 

5 minutes then, using a palette knife, ease 

the cake from its tin and place on a cooling 

rack. 

• To make the icing, sieve the icing 

sugar into a bowl, stir in the lemon juice 

until you have an icing thick enough to 

cover the cake and drip down the sides. 

Spoon the icing over the cake then scatter 

with the pistachios and crystalised 

rose petals and, if you wish, a few dried 

rosebuds. 

Green olive, thyme and pine nut 

buns 

Makes 9 

Ingredients 

500g plain flour 

1½ tsp fast-acting yeast 

½ tsp sea salt 

200g natural yoghurt 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

100ml warm water 

250g green olives, stoned 

5 bushy sprigs thyme 

3 Tbsp pine nuts 

To finish 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

2 Tbsp, chopped thyme leaves, plus a few 

whole sprigs 

2 Tbsp pine nuts 

Method 

• You will need a deep-sided baking tin 

measuring 20cm x 20cm with a piece of 

baking parchment. 

• In a large, warm mixing bowl, mix 

the flour, yeast and salt. Put the yoghurt 

in a jug, whisk briefly to break it up, pour 

in the olive oil and the warm water, and 

stir well. 

• Combine the yoghurt mixture with 

the flour and yeast using your hands or a 

wooden spoon. You should end up with a 

somewhat sticky dough. 

• Roughly chop the olives. Chop the 

thyme leaves and add to the olives. In a 

dry pan, toast the pine nuts until golden. 

(Keep a close watch on them as they start 

slowly then burn rather quickly.) 

• If you are making the dough by hand, 

tip on to a floured board and knead the 

olives, thyme and pine nuts into it. If 

you prefer, use a food mixer fitted with a 

dough hook. 

• Continue kneading for a couple of 

minutes, adding a little more flour to stop 

the dough sticking if necessary, then put 

it back in its bowl, cover with a clean, 

warm cloth and put it in a warm place. 

Leave the dough in peace until it has 

risen to almost twice its original size. 

• Cut it into 6-8 equal pieces (depending 

on how large you like your buns), 

then shape each one into a round. Place 

them in the baking tin, one in the middle 

and the rest round the edge, then return 

to the warm place, cover with the cloth 

and leave for about 30 minutes, until 

nicely risen and nudging one another. 

• To finish, mix together the olive oil, 

chopped thyme leaves and pine nuts. 

• Set the oven at 210°C fan. Bake the 

buns for about 20 minutes, until well 

risen and lightly golden brown. 

• Spoon the pine-nut mixture over 

the buns and return to the oven for five 

minutes.

Stylish Yaris Cross SUV shades its sibling 

TOYOTA’S decision to create 

an SUV version of the Yaris, its 

smallest car, has been a master 

stroke, although naming it the 

‘Cross’ less so, but even that hasn’t 

stopped it becoming one of the 

company’s best selling small 

vehicles. 

It shares the same well-proven 

and engineered chassis, suspension 

and powertrain from the 

fourth generation Yaris. 

The end result is a highly 

competent, functional, and stylish 

vehicle packed with a full suite of 

safety and driver assist technologies. 

Practicality, more room and 

style make even its higher price a 

more desirable vehicle for many 

compared to the diminutive fivedoor 

Yaris. 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

There is a sizeable difference 

between the Yaris hatch and it’s in 

favour of the Cross sibling. 

Overall, it’s 240mm longer, has 

50mm more front overhang and 

a whopping 180mm at the rear. 

It has an additional extra 30mm 

worth of ground clearance and 

stands 90mm taller, enabling the 

Yaris Cross to stand tall in the 

mini urban SUV class. 

First step on the Yaris Cross ladder 

is the $38,990 GX. From there 

it’s a sizeable monetary leap to 

the $45,190 GR Sport, and a more 

modest $1000 jump into the flagship 

Limited. You can personalise 

for a further $1000 with a nifty 

two-tone paint job.

something cleaner and greener, 

the distinctive Yaris Cross makes 

a compelling case with super low 

CO 2 engine emissions of just 76g/ 

km. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder 

petrol electric hybrid system has a 

combined power output of 85kW. 

In urban motoring, the hybrid 

has amazingly low engine noise 

levels. The cabin becomes a cone 

of silence when the hybrid system 

is running in electric-only mode, 

something it regularly does for 

long periods on flat urban roads. 

City driving is very much the 

happy place for this fashionable 

little SUV, an environment it was 

designed for. 

Taking the Cross beyond urban 

limits nudges it, and the driver, 

ever-so-slightly out of their respective 

comfort zones. 

Longer open road trips are 

doable and the test vehicle was 

comfortable enough on a 200-kilometre 

roadie. A direct shift CVT 

(continuously variable transmission) 

is purpose-built to deliver 

on its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel 

economy. 

The cabin has a sophisticated 

and comfortable feel and its 

390-litre luggage capacity is good, 

but not class leading. 

While larger than the Yaris 

hatch, the cabin still feels snug and 

taller back seat passengers will 

lament the lack of rear legroom as 

they rest their chin on their knees. 

This is tolerable for short 

around town trips, which to be fair 

is what the vehicle is built for, but 

it’s not a fun place for the longerlegged 

on long journeys. 

This is another Toyota model 

that benefits from the company’s 

acclaimed Safety Sense systems 

and advanced driver assistance 

functions. They help those behind 

the wheel avoid a wide range of 

common crash risks using driver 

information, early warnings, and, 

if needed, automatic braking and 

steering intervention. 

The ride and handling exemplify 

this, proving neat and tidy, hardly 

putting a foot out of place. The 

suspension is balanced and nimble 

and answered the big questions 

asked of it over twisty terrain. 

The extra height and ground 

clearance means more body roll 

if you quicken the pace through 

tight corners, and is an area where 

the lower slung Yaris hatch has a 

distinct edge. 

The steering could do with more 

road feel, although the weighting 

is right on point making the test 

vehicle easy to park in even the 

most confined parking spaces.
