New faces bring boost for Waihora<br />

Schulte has praised the work<br />

of his young charges after<br />

an injury-hit team held on<br />

for a narrow victory over<br />

Southbridge in their Luisetti<br />

Seeds combined country clash.<br />

Waihora had 10 players out<br />

injured – but their replacements<br />

proved more than handy in the<br />

20-16 win at Rhodes Park.<br />

“We managed to call upon a<br />

couple of colts and a couple of<br />

div 2 boys that stood up for us,<br />

(colts players) Shaun O’Leary<br />

was one of our three players of<br />

the day, he scored a try as well,<br />

and Jed (Symes) at fullback<br />

played really well too.<br />

“Pretty impressive for the<br />

young guys just to come in first<br />

up and play so well.<br />

“It’s really promising for us<br />

moving forward, just for everyone<br />

to step up and believe that<br />

they can pull it off was probably<br />

the biggest take away from that<br />

game for us.”<br />

Schulte said his side held on<br />

thanks to some strong defence.<br />

“The last ten minutes, Southbridge<br />

were camped on our<br />

line, so we had to hold them<br />

out and we managed to get a<br />

penalty, which was nice and<br />

relieved the pressure.”<br />

He hoped a few absentees<br />

from the win would be fit for<br />

their next assignment away to<br />

Rakaia on Saturday.<br />

“It’s looking like we will have<br />

about four or five guys coming<br />

back, so that helps out a bit.<br />

“It’s just been a big workload<br />

for some of the other guys, so<br />

hopefully it’ll allow us to give<br />

some of those boys that have<br />

been there for the past four<br />

weeks a bit more of a rest.”<br />

At Lincoln, captain Caleb<br />

McStay said they’re getting<br />

closer to their first win of the<br />

season after a 31-all draw with<br />

Oxford on Saturday.<br />

McStay said they started<br />

strong but couldn’t keep the<br />

momentum going in their<br />

drawn match.<br />

“We used the ball well and got<br />

some pretty good tries early on.<br />

“But then, as it got a bit later<br />

in the game in the second half,<br />

they sort of crawled their way<br />

back into it and then it obviously<br />

ended up as a draw, which<br />

was probably a fitting result.”<br />

Lincoln take on West Melton<br />

this weekend – also without a<br />

win following their 36-21 defeat<br />

at the hands of Methven on Saturday<br />

– in a match where competition<br />

points count towards<br />

both the combined country and<br />

Coleman Shield tables.<br />

McStay said Lincoln wouldn’t<br />

take West Melton lightly.<br />

“You can’t really go off previous<br />

results for the last few<br />

weeks.<br />

“Just because any team on<br />

their day can show up and play<br />

some good rugby.<br />

“Obviously we haven’t had<br />

our first win either, so yeah, I<br />

think it’ll be a good game.”<br />

Round five gets under way<br />

tomorrow night when Prebbleton<br />

host Oxford under lights<br />

at Prebbleton Domain, before<br />

Darfield meets Ohoka at home<br />

on Friday night.<br />

Saturday’s fixtures see Hornby<br />

visit winless Saracens at<br />

Southbrook Park and Waihora<br />

take on Rakaia.<br />

Southbridge and Springston<br />

are both at home – they take on<br />

Woodend and Ashburton Celtic<br />

respectively, while Lincoln<br />
