Trap plan
targeting
suburban
predators
• By Geoff Sloan
A PREDATOR-free group has
been offering traps at the New
Brighton Market to help people
catch pests and protect native
birds in their backyard.
Predator Free Eastside has been
spreading the word at the Saturday
market about the damage
caused by pests, such as rats and
mice.
For a donation to cover the
costs, people can take home a
humane tunnel trap to do their bit
to protect the environment.
Predator Free Eastside organiser
Lee Osborn said there has been
a lot of interest from the public,
with a number of people taking
traps home.
“Our aim is to have traps in
backyards over the whole country.
Because the more people who
have traps, the more of these rats,
mice and hedgehogs will be eliminated
and our wildlife will have a
better chance.”
The group is also promoting the
TRAPPING: Greg Chapman
checks one of the tunnel
traps in his Southshore
garden.
use of humane trapping methods.
“That’s really important because
we don’t want to hurt anything.
“We don’t want them to suffer
but we don’t want them here
because they don’t belong in this
country.”
Once the trap has caught a pest,
the carcass can be either buried or
put into a plastic bag and placed in
the rubbish bin.
NZ On Air
Osborn said the tunnel traps
vastly reduce any risk to children,
domestic pets and other nontarget
animals.
The former biosecurity inspector
said rats are good climbers and
can attack bird nests.
“Rats and mice. You wouldn’t
believe how many, they’re everywhere.
“It’s nothing to be embarrassed
about saying you’ve got them in
your garden because most people
do, whether they know it or not.”
In 2016, the government announced
an ambitious target of
making New Zealand predatorfree
by 2050.
“Our poor old native species,
you know, fantails, bellbirds, waxeyes,
their breeding rate is really
slow in comparison to these introduced
predators, which shouldn’t
SAFE: The tunnel traps are easy to bait and dispatch pests
in a humane way.
even be in the country. They just
breed so quickly the poor old local
guys haven’t got a chance really.”
Osborn said since she started
trapping, she has heard more birds
singing in her neighbourhood.
She is hoping a greater uptake of
traps will see native birds flourish,
allowing more people to enjoy
their songs.
Way safer intersections
on Shirley Rd
We’ll be working at the intersection of Shirley Road, Hills Road
and Warrington Street from Monday 20 May until the end of June.
We’re installing a safe speed platform, a raised pedestrian crossing
and improving the slip lanes.
We know road works are disruptive, and we’re working hard to keep
traffic flowing. We’ve also planned a short and busy programme
so that we’re out of your way as soon as possible.
Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience while we make
this intersection way safer for everyone.
Bib messages a move
to promote positivity
ANOTHER 1700 ‘Keep it Positive’ sideline
bibs have handed out to rugby clubs
and schools to promote better sideline
behaviour.
The Canterbury Rugby Ray White Real
Estate initiative follows up the campaign
from last year when 500 bibs were handed
out to junior coaches, secondary schools
and senior club teams.
The bibs help to identify who should
be on the sideline, while reinforcing
the message to provide safe, positive
environments for players, coaches, referees
and spectators.
“The feedback was really positive from
the first roll-out last year, which lead to
more clubs and schools asking how they
too can get on board,” CRFU community
rugby manager Fiona Smith said.
“Many of the clubs and schools have
been looking for ways to clearly identify
who their reserve players are, but the cost
has been a barrier. So this not only helps
them and the match officials, but also helps
get the Keep it Positive message out further
too. Having Ray White’s assistance in this
has been invaluable.”
The bibs have been supplied to all
premier division 1 men’s and women’s
teams across Christchurch, North
Canterbury and Ellesmere clubs as well as
schools.
The bright yellow bibs are now worn by
junior rugby coaches who referee games,
reserves at school and senior rugby, right
through to Canterbury’s NPC and FPC
squads.
“Sideline behaviour impacts on all
participants in the game, players, coaches,
ON BOARD: New Brighton is
sporting the Keep it Positive
message on the sidelines.
PHOTO: CANTERBURY RUGBY
match officials and supporters.
“By mirroring what happens at a highperformance
level and clearly identifying
who is involved in the game and in
what capacity, we aim to improve the
experience of all,” Smith said.
The Keep it Positive message is also
clearly displayed throughout Hagley Park
with the permanent post pads supporting
the message as well.
Said Ray White’s Clare Morris: “We
love how rugby connects people across
Canterbury and it’s important for that
to be a positive experience, so anything
Ray White can do to support that is a key
driver for us.”
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their
eligibility for a subsidised heat pump are
welcome to get in touch for details and
help with the application process.
Stylish Yaris Cross SUV shades its sibling
TOYOTA’S decision to create
an SUV version of the Yaris, its
smallest car, has been a master
stroke, although naming it the
‘Cross’ less so, but even that hasn’t
stopped it becoming one of the
company’s best selling small
vehicles.
It shares the same well-proven
and engineered chassis, suspension
and powertrain from the
fourth generation Yaris.
The end result is a highly
competent, functional, and stylish
vehicle packed with a full suite of
safety and driver assist technologies.
Practicality, more room and
style make even its higher price a
more desirable vehicle for many
compared to the diminutive fivedoor
Yaris.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
There is a sizeable difference
between the Yaris hatch and it’s in
favour of the Cross sibling.
Overall, it’s 240mm longer, has
50mm more front overhang and
a whopping 180mm at the rear.
It has an additional extra 30mm
worth of ground clearance and
stands 90mm taller, enabling the
Yaris Cross to stand tall in the
mini urban SUV class.
First step on the Yaris Cross ladder
is the $38,990 GX. From there
it’s a sizeable monetary leap to
the $45,190 GR Sport, and a more
modest $1000 jump into the flagship
Limited. You can personalise
for a further $1000 with a nifty
two-tone paint job.
your carbon footprint by driving
something cleaner and greener,
the distinctive Yaris Cross makes
a compelling case with super low
CO 2 engine emissions of just 76g/
km. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder
petrol electric hybrid system has a
combined power output of 85kW.
In urban motoring, the hybrid
has amazingly low engine noise
levels. The cabin becomes a cone
of silence when the hybrid system
is running in electric-only mode,
something it regularly does for
long periods on flat urban roads.
City driving is very much the
happy place for this fashionable
little SUV, an environment it was
designed for.
Taking the Cross beyond urban
limits nudges it, and the driver,
ever-so-slightly out of their respective
comfort zones.
Longer open road trips are
doable and the test vehicle was
comfortable enough on a 200-kilometre
roadie. A direct shift CVT
(continuously variable transmission)
is purpose-built to deliver
on its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel
economy.
The cabin has a sophisticated
and comfortable feel and its
390-litre luggage capacity is good,
but not class leading.
While larger than the Yaris
hatch, the cabin still feels snug and
taller back seat passengers will
lament the lack of rear legroom as
they rest their chin on their knees.
This is tolerable for short
around town trips, which to be fair
is what the vehicle is built for, but
it’s not a fun place for the longerlegged
on long journeys.
This is another Toyota model
that benefits from the company’s
acclaimed Safety Sense systems
and advanced driver assistance
functions. They help those behind
the wheel avoid a wide range of
common crash risks using driver
information, early warnings, and,
if needed, automatic braking and
steering intervention.
The ride and handling exemplify
this, proving neat and tidy, hardly
putting a foot out of place. The
suspension is balanced and nimble
and answered the big questions
asked of it over twisty terrain.
The extra height and ground
clearance means more body roll
if you quicken the pace through
tight corners, and is an area where
the lower slung Yaris hatch has a
distinct edge.
The steering could do with more
road feel, although the weighting
is right on point making the test
vehicle easy to park in even the
most confined parking spaces.
