A PREDATOR-free group has 

been offering traps at the New 

Brighton Market to help people 

catch pests and protect native 

birds in their backyard. 

Predator Free Eastside has been 

spreading the word at the Saturday 

market about the damage 

caused by pests, such as rats and 

mice. 

For a donation to cover the 

costs, people can take home a 

humane tunnel trap to do their bit 

to protect the environment. 

Predator Free Eastside organiser 

Lee Osborn said there has been 

a lot of interest from the public, 

with a number of people taking 

traps home. 

“Our aim is to have traps in 

backyards over the whole country. 

Because the more people who 

have traps, the more of these rats, 

mice and hedgehogs will be eliminated 

and our wildlife will have a 

better chance.”

Once the trap has caught a pest, 

the carcass can be either buried or 

put into a plastic bag and placed in 

the rubbish bin.

The former biosecurity inspector 

said rats are good climbers and 

can attack bird nests. 

“Rats and mice. You wouldn’t 

believe how many, they’re everywhere. 

“It’s nothing to be embarrassed 

about saying you’ve got them in 

your garden because most people 

do, whether they know it or not.”

Bib messages a move 

to promote positivity 

ANOTHER 1700 ‘Keep it Positive’ sideline 

bibs have handed out to rugby clubs 

and schools to promote better sideline 

behaviour. 

The Canterbury Rugby Ray White Real 

Estate initiative follows up the campaign 

from last year when 500 bibs were handed 

out to junior coaches, secondary schools 

and senior club teams. 

The bibs help to identify who should 

be on the sideline, while reinforcing 

the message to provide safe, positive 

environments for players, coaches, referees 

and spectators. 

“The feedback was really positive from 

the first roll-out last year, which lead to 

more clubs and schools asking how they 

too can get on board,” CRFU community 

rugby manager Fiona Smith said. 

“Many of the clubs and schools have 

been looking for ways to clearly identify 

who their reserve players are, but the cost 

has been a barrier. So this not only helps 

them and the match officials, but also helps 

get the Keep it Positive message out further 

too. Having Ray White’s assistance in this 

has been invaluable.” 

The bibs have been supplied to all 

premier division 1 men’s and women’s 

teams across Christchurch, North 

Canterbury and Ellesmere clubs as well as 

schools. 

The bright yellow bibs are now worn by 

junior rugby coaches who referee games, 

reserves at school and senior rugby, right 

through to Canterbury’s NPC and FPC 

squads.

Stylish Yaris Cross SUV shades its sibling 

TOYOTA’S decision to create 

an SUV version of the Yaris, its 

smallest car, has been a master 

stroke, although naming it the 

‘Cross’ less so, but even that hasn’t 

stopped it becoming one of the 

company’s best selling small 

vehicles. 

It shares the same well-proven 

and engineered chassis, suspension 

and powertrain from the 

fourth generation Yaris. 

The end result is a highly 

competent, functional, and stylish 

vehicle packed with a full suite of 

safety and driver assist technologies. 

Practicality, more room and 

style make even its higher price a 

more desirable vehicle for many 

compared to the diminutive fivedoor 

Yaris.

happy place for this fashionable 

little SUV, an environment it was

Taking the Cross beyond urban 

limits nudges it, and the driver, 

ever-so-slightly out of their respective 

comfort zones. 

Longer open road trips are 

doable and the test vehicle was 

comfortable enough on a 200-kilometre 

roadie. A direct shift CVT 

(continuously variable transmission) 

is purpose-built to deliver 

on its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel 

economy. 

The cabin has a sophisticated 

and comfortable feel and its 

390-litre luggage capacity is good, 

but not class leading. 

While larger than the Yaris 

hatch, the cabin still feels snug and 

taller back seat passengers will 

lament the lack of rear legroom as 

they rest their chin on their knees. 

This is tolerable for short 

around town trips, which to be fair 

is what the vehicle is built for, but 

it’s not a fun place for the longerlegged 

on long journeys. 

This is another Toyota model 

that benefits from the company’s 

acclaimed Safety Sense systems 

and advanced driver assistance 

functions. They help those behind 

the wheel avoid a wide range of
