ASSEMBLÉ, GRANDE jeté, plié,
pirouette and tour en l’air are just
a few of moves ballerina Tamison
Soppet, 14, and danseur Hamish
Giddens, 16, know well.
The aspiring dancers, both from
Convergence Dance Studios in the
central city, used such moves in
their performances at the Youth
America Grand Prix finals in New
York; with Tamison winning the
junior women’s title in what is
thought to be a New Zealand first.
Hamish landed a place in the
final heat of the senior men’s
category.
“No words to describe – just so
happy,” Tamison said after winning
the competition.
“It is an honour to be able to
claim the title. I am over the moon
and forever grateful.”
Tamison, who studies through
correspondence, said she will visit
Europe with her family to explore
her options.
In July she heads to London to
attend the Royal Ballet School, one
of the world’s top dance schools.
She is following in the footsteps
of dancers such as Alessandra
Ferri, Margot Fonteyn, Marienela
Nunez and Antoinette Sibley.
Hamish, a Burnside High year 12
student and age group national title
holder in swimming, was offered
spots at the Dutch National Ballet
school in Amsterdam and Zurich
Ballett in Switzerland, alongside
others.
Students visit site of bloody WW2 battle
• By Emily O’Hagan
NINE STUDENTS from St
Andrew’s College and Cashmere
High have visited the site of
the Battle of Monte Cassino in
Italy to commemorate its 80th
anniversary.
It was one New Zealand’s
bloodiest battles during World
War 2, spearheaded by the
Māori Battalion.
The New Zealand Division
suffered 343 deaths and more
than 600 wounded during doorto-door
fighting in the town
of Cassino. More than 150 of
the Māori Battalion’s men were
killed, wounded or captured.
St Andrew’s travel and tourism
teacher Ian Morrison said
being at Cassino for Anzac Day
was special.
A wreath was laid on behalf
of Christchurch citizens at the
Cassino cemetery.
The students were selected for
the trip as part of the Christchurch
sister city global education
programme.
“It’s a really good time to take
them because they’re at that
stage where they’re making decisions
about what they’re going
to do career-wise, whether they
want to travel, and it’s a good
start for that,” he said.
The three-week trip included
visiting Paris and Rome. There
are five St Andrew’s families
who had descendants who
fought in the battle.
FALLEN: More than 300 New
Zealand troops were killed
during the battle and are
buried at Cassino cemetery.
St Andrew’s student Brooke
Hughes said after doing the research,
she feels more connected
to Monte Cassino.
“It definitely makes it a lot
more personal, makes it become
more important and relevant to
you because it’s not something
that can be forgotten and it
should never be.”
Morrison believes the students
benefited greatly from
the experience, and will carry
it with them for the rest of their
lives.
Hornby restaurant offers more
choices and familiar favourites
Thousands of Christchurch families will
have fond memories of enjoying the tasty
food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet
restaurant, which was located for many
years in the central city.
A New Zealand-wide franchise
operation, the business went through many
changes over the years, then with new
owners taking over the company six years
ago, it gained a new momentum.
A third franchise was set up in
Auckland, its Rotorua restaurant
reopened, and in July 2019, Valentines
Christchurch opened at a new location –
Chalmers Street, Hornby.
As company director Ron Lal explains,
Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi
culture and they wanted to retain that
feeling of nostalgia, but with some new
concepts added to the mix.
“We wanted to offer our customers a
new experience that’s up with the times,
and with a modern twist on hospitality.
“Customers have a lot more choice
of food now,” he says, “for example you
can choose your own meat, which will
be cooked individually for you. We offer
a big selection of dishes, seafood and
desserts, and of course there are the
familiar favourites that the children love,
like the chocolate fountain and an endless
supply of ice-cream.
“We want to wow the customers and
at the same time we want to create that
nostalgic Valentines feel.”
The Valentines tradition of a free meal
for a customer on their birthday has been
upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat
and, of course, with the famous birthday
song being sung by staff, too. Families
are also invited to take advantage of
the school holiday special from time
to time. During the holidays, one child
under the age of eight gets a free lunch if
accompanied by a full paying adult. (T’s &
C’s apply.)
Valentines has always been seen as a
100 per cent family restaurant, a tradition
that the new Valentines team is keen
to continue, but Valentines is also a
restaurant for everyone, from families
to couples, to friends getting together to
celebrate a special occasion.
Situated in the heart of the Hornby
shopping precinct, not only is Valentines
the ideal place for people from the
Hornby community to enjoy tasty food
and a warm, friendly vibe, it also employs
local staff, who are treated well and
therefore enjoy working there and giving
their customers the best possible service.
Valentines is open seven days a week,
from 10am till late. Outside the buffet
times they also do the popular Valentines
Shareboxes, which offer a range of
amazing dishes.
Dancers set sights on
international dreams
• From page 1
Despite her nerves and it being her first
time competing in the grand prix, Tamison
was determined to show just how much
talent “a little Kiwi dancer” could have. She
was announced as winner after wooing the
31 international judges.
Itwas also Hamish’s first time attending
the grand prix.
“It was an amazing experience. The competition
opened a lot of doors. New Zealand
is quite small so the YAGP has given me
the opportunity to attend some big international
schools,” he said.
The pair, who both wish to become professional
dancers, were invited to compete
at the grand prix, which was held on April
11-20, at a qualifying regional competition
in Sydney in September, where Tamison
won the junior women’s category.
The grand prix, which has been running
for 25 years, saw about 2000 dancers from
30 countries compete in classical, contemporary
and scholarship classes.
Of those dancers, 500 juniors were selected
to proceed to the finals, including the
two Christchurch teenagers.
Tamison credits her success to hard work,
practice, never giving up, constant support
and learning from her teacher at Convergence,
Olivia Russell.
Her mother Toni Soppet said Tamison’s
highlights from the trip were getting to perform
on the Lincoln Center stage in New
York and meeting new friends, teachers and
the grand prix team.
“We’re very proud of her and still in a bit
of shock. She has worked so hard. Her dedication
and work ethic is like no other.
“The talent (at the grand prix) was incredible
with beautiful dancers inside and out.”
Hamish, who has been dancing at Convergence
for about a year after moving from
the Southern Ballet Theatre, said Russell
has been instrumental in helping with his
‘technically and artistically clean’ performance.
“Ballet is an art form and one I enjoy as it
gives me an escape from reality. I like pushing
and showing myself through dancing.”
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their
eligibility for a subsidised heat pump are
welcome to get in touch for details and
help with the application process.
DRIVING ON: Philip and Monica McCormick with their 1973 Holden
Belmont HQ, outside their home at Kevin Hickman Retirement Village.
HQ goes the distance
Winter
Warmer
Deals
PHILIP AND Monica McCormick say
they sure have had some “Holden years”
in their 1973 Holden Belmont HQ.
The couple enjoy looking back on the
fun times – as well as forward to future
drives – in the Belmont, now parked
outside their new home at Ryman’s Kevin
Hickman Retirement Village.
They say the Australian-manufactured,
New Zealand-assembled car with the
bench seats changed their lives.
Not only were the family’s children
brought home from Christchurch Women’s
Hospital in it, but a few years down
the line the Holden was also ferrying the
four youngsters about.
The versatile vehicle was a welcome
addition to a busy life in Canterbury and
sometimes on the Coast, they said.
The couple married in Fox Glacier
(Monica’s hometown) in 1967. They relied
on Philip’s father’s Ford Thames Trader
truck to get around ,until they bought the
HQ in 1973.
For daughters, Katrina and Kirstie, the
couple remember there were sporting
games to go to.
“At primary school I used to take most
of the netball team to sport . . . four used
to be right in the very back, another four
in the back seat, plus whoever was in the
front,” Philip said.
On holidays everyone, including sons
William and Blair, hit the road in the
Holden.
The retirement village is close to the
couple’s former Yaldhurst Rd home and
some of the residents were former neighbours.
Kevin Hickman Village manager Liz
Hampton said the car provides a real
talking point for those who know it is
Philip and Monica’s pride and joy.
The Belmont was brought new at
Blackwell Motors in Christchurch,
having come off a production line at a
Lower Hutt assembly factory. The cars
were partly made in Adelaide, in a CKD
(completely knocked down) kits before
being sent to Petone in crates for final full
assembly.
Philip said the opportunity to buy a
new car became easier in 1972 when the
annual number of imported cars jumped
into the tens of thousands under new
regulations.
“Norman Kirk, the Labour prime minister,
changed it so people could go and
buy a car whenever they wanted to, which
was unheard of,” he said.
Upgraded Lexus RX a major leap forward
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
LEXUS HAS dispensed with
evolutionary change, and gone
full-out revolutionary with the
latest version of its RX, its longest
serving hybrid SUV, and one of
its best sellers.
The cost of getting on to the
RX ladder is getting steeper so
mind your step.
It starts at $120,990 for the RX
350h 2.5P, in Limited guise you
will pay $131,990 and a $135,990
bounty is on the head of the
Enhancement Pack RX. Shaking
$142,990 out of your new luxury
SUV piggy bank gets you behind
the wheel of the 2.4-litre turbo
hybrid F SPORT, the tearaway
excitement machine of the new
RX family.
The RX 350h features a nonturbo
2.5-litre petrol hybrid
powertrain, E-Four all-wheel
drive system – both cut and paste
jobs from the Toyota Highlander
and standard in three of the four
model range.
The outlier is the 273kW RX
500h F Sport. To put that into
context, that output betters
the standard powertrain used
across the rest of the range by a
whopping 90kW.
While it’s the entry point into
the RX club, the 350h offers a
high standard of luxury and
premium materials.
The Limited model supplied
for this road test takes things
up a level with standard 21-inch
dark metallic alloy wheels,
world first BladeScan adaptive
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
high-beam headlights for a truly
illuminating night-time driving
experience.
Parked up in the engine bay is
a top-notch self-charging hybrid
electric drivetrain, featuring a
highly efficient Atkinson cycle
2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol
engine.
Light, compact and matched
with a power dense electric
motor it delivers a more than
handy combined output of
184kW.
It made a positive statement
with its purposeful pulling
power from standing starts.
Energy levels taper off a tad
at higher revs, a space where
the hybrids aren’t so effective.
Nonetheless, it underlines the
advances Lexus have made and
continue to make with this
technology.
A good example of this was
the test vehicle’s ability to run
for lengthy periods on electricity
alone in urban driving. The crisp
shifting auto is hard to fault
largely because it rarely ever
deviates from the high standard
it sets.
Flat-folding rear seats create
a large rear cargo area. There’s
an abundance of front and rear
legroom, headroom, although
the latter is a touch tighter for
taller back occupants than I
expected. Some will lament the
loss of the third row that was a
big draw card in the previous
model.
The RX is armed with the latest
Lexus Safety System + package
providing advanced safety and
accident prevention technologies.
These either warn the driver of a
collision or help them reduce the
severity of an impact.
Safety features include a radar
based pre-collision system with
autonomous emergency braking
and all-speed dynamic radar
cruise control.
Independent suspension
delivers a nice blend of comfort
and handling. AWD maximises
traction across a broad range
of road surfaces and weather
conditions.
Given its height and weight,
the RX was nimble and easy
to manage over twisty terrain.
However, this isn’t an overtly
sporty SUV. I suspect that
mantle sits firmly with the new F
Sport turbo.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
run. 20% of this figure is met by Government
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
