THOSE WERE the words from 

one of the first on the scene when 

a car drove into the path of a train 

at a railway crossing. 

Scott McIlory was parked up 

in his ute facing away from the 

railway line when he heard a 

“massive bang.” 

I looked at my side mirror and I 

saw a big cloud of dust. I thought 

‘holy s**t someone has just been 

hit by a train’,” he 

said.

The train – two connected 

locomotives – hit the front of the 

Toyota Corolla, spun it around 

and pushed it off the tracks and 

onto a grass verge on Leeston 

Dunsandel Rd. The railway crossing 

lights were flashing and the 

bells sounding. 

When McIlory went over to 

check on the man, he was out of 

his car and walking around.

always going to come off

But in this case, the 

middle-aged driver walked 

away from his badly 

damaged Toyota Corolla. 

The crossing’s flashing 

lights were working, and the 

bells were ringing. 

How the driver didn’t see 

the lights flashing and the 

approaching train – two 

joined locomotives – is 

anyone’s guess.

CHILD CUT FROM 

CAR AFTER CRASH 

A child was left trapped after a 

two-car crash on the intersection 

of Robinsons and Birchs Rds. The 

crash happened on Wednesday 

afternoon at about 2.45pm. Lincoln 

Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire 

officer Richie Bee said the child 

was cut free from the car. He was 

uninjured. The drivers of both cars 

were also uninjured. 


LOW PASSENGER numbers 

have seen the Southbridge to 

Lincoln bus axed. 

The long-term trial of the bus 

will finish on June 27. 

From January to April an 

average of 32 people used the 

service each week, with the average 

falling to 14 people using it 

three or more times in a week, 

including return trips. 

The bus left Southbridge 

at 6.43am and stopped in 

Leeston, Doyleston, Irwell and 

Springston. It ran two evening 

services, leaving Lincoln at 

4.11pm and 6.08pm. 

It mostly provided transport 

for workers and students to get 

to Lincoln or get on another bus 

to Christchurch. 

Leeston resident Tina Bond 

said she was disappointed the 

bus service was being stopped. 

Her son Caelan uses it to get to 

and from Lincoln High School. 

She said they would be looking 

for other transport options 

now. 

“We will just 

have to find 

someone to 

carpool with,” 

Bond said. 

She said 

Caelan had 

noticed the 

low usage of 

the bus, but in 

Tina Bond 

recent weeks it had appeared to 

have picked up. 

“In the last few weeks, it’s been 

so full you’re lucky to get a seat 

some days, but it’s a bit hit and 

miss.” 

Bond said with Leeston 

growing, she was expecting to 

get more amenities rather than 

losing services. 

In November, Environment 

Canterbury warned users the 

service was at risk of being cancelled 

due to its low numbers. 

ECan public transport general 

manager Stewart Gibbon said 

usage has been low from the 

start. 

“We’ve worked closely with 

the community from the start of 

the trial in 2019, to give it every 

opportunity 

for success, 

including 

amending the 

route structure, 

timetable and 

connecting 

it with direct 

services from 

Lincoln into 

Christchurch 

city,” he said.

destined for challenges from

this is due to the limited offer 

of one option per day. It is our 

view that having a single fixed 

schedule does not accommodate 

the diverse needs of our entire 

community.” 

The targeted public transport 

rate the Leeston, Southbridge 

and Doyleston communities pay 

for this service was not included 

in ECan’s 2024-2034 draft Long- 

Term Plan.

McIlory called 111 stayed at the 

scene until emergency services 

arrived. 

A St John spokesperson said it 

responded with two ambulances 

and a rapid response vehicle, 

but the driver declined to be assessed. 

McIlory said he felt sorry for 

the train driver. 

“They probably wouldn’t have 

known what they were walking 

back to.” 

In the year to June 30 2023, 40 

vehicles or individuals collided 

with trains on the national rail 

network, with 305 near misses. 

There were 11 crashes and 192 

near misses at level crossings.

were using the verge due to a 

lack of parking. 

Alexander took aim at the 

club, saying it was the only one 

having issues. 

“They are the only club which 

has a parking issue and you 

have to say why is that, why are 

they only people who can’t park 

properly.” 

Alexander said his comments 

were a personal view and he was 

not speaking in his capacity as 

residents’ association chair. 

Residents association deputy 

chair Taylor Staines backed Alexander’s 

view. Staines said she 

was aware finding a park could 

be challenging, but it was up to 

people to park legally. 

Ruki said while there was no 

assigned parking, there was 

more parking on the football 

turf side of the park. 

She said other sporting codes 

could use parking at the aquatic 

and sports centres. 

Ruki also said it can be a challenge 

for parents who have to 

travel between multiple sports 

grounds to find the time to park 

further away. 

“Walking there is all well and 

good but we have families with 

three kids and their first kid’s 

game may be at Rolleston at 

9.30am, then they might need to 

go to Lincoln for their next kid’s 

game then they might need to go 

to Waihora for their next kid’s 

game.” 

Alexander did not agree with 

Ruki. He said parents should 

turn up earlier to sports matches 

or be prepared to walk further. 

“Rugby have their point of 

view. I disagree with it. 

“Council is never going to provide 

peak demand parking for 

2 per cent of the week.” 

In August, the council 

changed its approach to parking 

and started to fine people. 

From September 1 to February 

28, the council issued 1120 

infringements and 534 warnings. 

It could not say how many 

infringements were issued at or 

around Foster Park. 

FINED:

Foster Park 

has led 

to people 

being fined 

for illegally 

parking on 

grass verges. 

There are about 925 spaces 

surrounding Foster Park, 

along with legal street parking 

in the area. 

Suggestions have been made 

to cover up a water race on 

Goulds Rd, but Alexander said it 

would add minimal parking. 

“It is something I investigated 

as a councillor and proposed 

to staff. It would add minimal 

parking, it would be angled so it 

wouldn’t be particularly safe and 

there would only be tens of extra 

parks.” 

Ruki said the club was 

approached by Canterbury Rugby 

to host all Ellesmere junior games 

at Foster Park to reduce travel, 

but the lack of parking was one 

reason the idea was turned down.

A SECOND supermarket could 

soon be on the way for Lincoln. 

The huge 1710-home Carter 

Group subdivision, Lincoln 

South, will get under way in 

September. 

Stage one is expected to deliver 

250 sections, space for Lincoln’s 

third primary school and a 

supermarket. 

In the plan, land on Springs

supermarket would be approved 

unless it was part of a master 

planned development,” Carter

Carter would not say which 

supermarket brand would be in 

Lincoln South. 

“We have been approached by 

supermarket operators and are 

currently in negotiations for our 

Lincoln development. We will be 

making a public announcement 

on this soon.” 

A Woolworths spokesperson 

said it does not have any plans 

at this stage, while Foodstuffs 

– the operator of New World in 

Lincoln, 2km from the planned 

Lincoln South – did not respond 

to Selwyn Times. 

The details for the primary 

school are also yet to be announced. 

“Timelines will be determined 

by the rate of development, the 

capacity of existing schools to accommodate 

anticipated growth, 

as well as future prioritisation 

and budget processes,” said Ministry 

of Education south leader 

Nancy Bell. 

Bell said Lincoln Primary, 

Ararira Springs and Lincoln 

High School are expected to 

experience growth in the short to 

medium term. 

The subdivision has faced opposition 

from Lincoln residents, 

with advocacy group Lincoln 

Voice taking the Carter Group to 

the Environment Court.

Carter was one 200 people to 

speak to councillors last week 

about its 2024-34 draft Long 

Term Plan.

Denise Carrick said it was a good 

public relations exercise. 

“It was a PR exercise, and it 

sounds good doesn’t it, that 

they’re putting in a supermarket 

and primary school. But what 

people are still forgetting, and it 

was a running theme through 

the hearings, is that all the infrastructure 

is behind (schedule),” 

Carrick said. 

She was concerned by the 

potential impact of traffic congestion 

and road safety. 

Part of Carter’s submission to 

the council included a request 

for Lincoln roading upgrades 

needed for the subdivision to be 

prioritised. 

“It would be great from our 

perspective if the Lincoln 

upgrades occurred hand and 

glove with the development as 

it proceeded to make sure there 

is no congestion and no pinch 

points for the existing and future 

community,” Carter said. 

As part of the draft LTP the 

council is planning to replace the 

roundabout at the intersection 

of Springs Rd and Gerald St with 

traffic lights in 2027. 

Carter said the upgrade needs 

to be done as soon as possible. 

“It is going to be a congestion 

point as the development proceeds 

and without the development 

proceeding it is going to be 

a congestion point.” 

Councillors will deliberate 

any changes to the draft LTP 

this week, with the final version 

adopted next month.

Artist eyeing top prize 

after return to painting

ARTIST STEVE Smyth will find out today 

whether has won the top prize at New 

Zealand’s premier portrait awards. 

Smyth, 59, from Springston, faced 

competition from a record-breaking 451 

entrants to the 2024 Adam Portraiture 

Awards and made it into the final 37, with 

the chance of winning a $20,000 cash 

prize. 

“I still don’t know how I feel. I really 

wasn’t expecting it,” Smyth said. 

“I really, honestly, thought I would have 

been getting one of the 430-odd ‘bad luck’ 

emails, but I got one of the 37 ‘well done’ 

ones. So here we are. 

“I’m still not one hundred per cent sure 

how I did it!” 

All portraits submitted to the biennial 

competition must be predominantly 

painted and feature a New Zealand citizen 

or resident; Smyth – whose portrait is 

entitled Everything – chose his wife Donna 

Smyth. 

“She was sitting at the breakfast bar on 

the phone, and I just liked the pose and 

thought she looked beautiful,” Smyth said. 

“A couple of months later, I was looking 

for something to paint and I came across 

those photos 

“Then I saw that the awards were on – 

they only happen every two years. All the 

paintings had to be in by March, and this 

was January, so I just did it and sent it in.” 

Smyth’s place in the finals is even more 

impressive as he has no formal background 

in art or design. 

“I was only ever interested in art, but 

that doesn’t pay the bills,” he said. 

“When I was growing up that was 

never seen as a real career option – but it’s 

something I’ve been able to come back to 

now I’m older; so I picked up a paint brush 

again and off I went.’’ 

All portrait awards finalists’ work will 

be exhibited at the New Zealand Portrait 

Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakata on Wellington’s 

waterfront. 

A selection of the portraits will then 

tour multiple venues across the country 

later this year.

The final stage of Rolleston’s IPORT development is now up for grabs and is the last opportunity for

of Christchurch, and rail to the West 

Coast, south, and north,” says IPORT 

director Tim Carter of the Carter 

Group. 

“The main attraction is its prime 

location in one of Canterbury’s fastest 

growing districts and Selwyn District 

Council commercial rates are one 

tenth of the price of equivalent sites in 

Christchurch City. 

“Our final development stage is 

mainly small lots, which is a great 

opportunity for smaller businesses 

or developers to get their foot in the 

door and take advantage of being 

located in a large-scale business 

park.” 

Lisa Fleck was one of the first to 

take the plunge when her business, 

Jones Road Auto, bought into IPORT 

in 2018. Lisa and her husband Nigel 

have had their auto repair business 

since 2012 and were previously 

leasing a much smaller workshop in 

nearby Rolleston before they decided 

to take a risk and build their own. 

“It was a huge challenge for us 

to shift from leasing a premises to 

owning our own building. It was a 

little bit terrifying as a ‘mom-andpop’ 

business,” says Lisa. 

“Being here at IPORT has given us 

fantastic profile. It’s a great place 

to be in business and we have just 

grown and grown.” 

Before Jones Road Auto moved into 

IPORT it had five staff and now the 

team has grown to more than 20. The 

business has even run out of room 

in the current premises and have 

recently invested in two more sites to 

expand the business. 

“Carter Group has been fantastic 

to work with – the team were really 

supportive and helpful in getting us 

into those extra two sites at IPORT,” 

says Lisa. 

“Getting that foot in the door 

changes you from being a little mum 

and dad business where you work 

really hard until the day you die, to 

actually building a commercial legacy 

and a future. 

“We’re in a totally different position 

now by taking that risk and it’s been 

a thousand percent worth it for us.” 

For Jim Burnard from Construct It, 

the main appeal of IPORT was the 

availability of small industrial sites 

and he says there’s a lot of demand 

in Canterbury. 

“I get calls all the time from clients 

who want land that isn’t actually 

available in Christchurch, which is 

quite surprising,” says Jim. “We have 

so little commercial and industrial 

land despite being a flat city, and 

a lot of the smaller block sizes just 

aren't available. 

“I really appreciate the fact that 

IPORT has listened and that they 

have developed a good mix of 

section sizes – it’s much needed.” 

Construct It is a design and build 

commercial construction company 

specialising in concrete. Jim bought 

into IPORT early last year and after 

recently finishing his first build, 

he has already purchased more 

sections for his own business and 

has a number of future builds either 

planned or underway on behalf of 

clients. 

“We're a commercial builder and 

this district is where the commercial 

growth is going to be in the next 10 

to 20 years, so it made a lot of sense 

to make sure we were established in 

IPORT sooner rather than later.” 

Jim has previously built mainly on 

the north side of Christchurch and 

says he’s had numerous problems 

with construction and geo-technical 

issues. 

“The ground was always a problem 

once you started to dig, but Rolleston 

doesn't have any of that,” says Jim. 

“The whole process is great – Carter 

Group are easy to deal with and it 

just runs really smoothly.”

Rugby Club called for leniency 

over parking restrictions on 

busy periods like Saturday

Why is it that only one club’s parents 

and supporters can’t park properly. This 

issue seems to reoccur every year. Two 

other clubs are based at the same park 

and don’t seem to have the same problem. 

There’s plenty of nearby street parking if 

people would be prepared to walk a couple 

of minutes to/from the park.

I have already sent a suggestion, more 

than a year ago, to SDC, with no response, 

to cover the water race down Goulds Rd 

(from Broadlands Drive all the way down 

to Dynes Rd) and install angled parking 

over the top. There is ample space to do 

this. It’s just a matter of time when someone 

is hit due to current parking limitation 

on Goulds Rd. Secondly, when the fields 

are busy users are parking in Oak Tree 

Lane on both sides narrowing the road 

to single lane. With that particular road 

having blind corners its creating a hazard 

for traffic.

As a resident of a nearby street to Foster 

Park it’s just mayhem and very dangerous 

for all motorists and pedestrians and is just 

waiting for a serious accident to happen. 

Why not get rid of the water race on 

Goulds Rd like has happened on other 

Rolleston main streets and add additional 

angle parking. Problem solved!

Supporters are only there for a short time. 

As council has forced everyone to play at 

Rolleston mostly, they have to therefore 

supply adequate parking. The council 

person says there’s parking at the pool.

area on Saturdays, it’s not just rugby that 

has issues. Getting a park to take the kids 

swimming can be a nightmare at times, 

with many from the sports centre now

so frustrating as a Rolleston local with 

multiple kids joined to the club that come 

Saturday we can’t get near the grounds.

only. Then where the old house is in the 

between parks (build) a high-rise car

This building would free up space on the

hockey, rugby. Yes, you’ll have to pay, but 

user pays and if you’re in the city you have 

to pay. Better than walking for miles and if 

made affordable then all good.

Student fieldwork gives lagoon insights 

ECOLOGICAL data captured 

by Lincoln High School students 

during a field trip to Yarrs Lagoon 

will be used to guide future 

management of the site. 

The year 13 ecology students 

braved a raging southerly to take 

part in a pioneering monitoring 

programme, alongside Environment 

Canterbury staff and experts 

from Department of Conservation 

and Lincoln University. 

Developed in partnership with 

Enviroschools, the monitoring 

programme is piloting new ways 

to engage year 13 students in 

relevant fieldwork during typically 

content-heavy NCEA assessments. 

It is inspired by the school’s 

head of science Willem Tolhoek’s 

vision for students to experience 

real science beyond the confines 

of the school laboratory. 

“It’s important that we apply 

what students learn in the classroom, 

by connecting them with 

experiences within their local 

community,” Tolhoek said. 

“In this instance, students could 

hone their skills and knowledge 

alongside those who have transferred 

their passion for science 

into a career.” 

It’s hoped the pilot will eventually 

be adopted as a means of 

formal assessment as part of the 

school’s localised curriculum. 

The students were put into 

groups and supported to complete 

a range of activities based on their 

interests. These included pest, 

freshwater macroinvertebrate, 

lizard, fish and vegetation monitoring, 

and DNA sampling.

and David Thomas, helped set up 

tracking tunnels, chew cards and 

a camera to monitor for pests such 

as possums and stoats. 

Macroinvertebrates are small 

organisms found in waterways 

and include a variety of fly larvae, 

beetles, worms and snails. They 

are an excellent indicator of 

stream health as they can be impacted 

by organic pollution.

Barnden and Siobhán Culhane, 

supported the students as they 

developed a freshwater macroinvertebrate 

monitoring regime to 

assess water quality.

Yarrs Lagoon 

Yarrs Lagoon is one of 

the largest freshwater 

wetland habitats 

remaining in the low 

plains of the district. It is 

located near the Lincoln 

township in the Ararira/LII 

River sub-catchment of Te

important food gathering 

site for Ngāi Tahu.

in-the-field analysis revealed 

caddisfly larvae at a site where 

none were sampled in 2022. 

“The discovery of this more sensitive 

species could indicate an improvement 

in water quality – but 

we’ll have to wait and see how the 

students interpret the data set.” 

Year 13 student Farah Aladem, 

said she found the trip beneficial. 

“Not only did I gain hands-on 

practical skills that I could put 

into my future studies, it allowed 

me to learn more about scientific 

methods – and to explore the 

concept of eDNA. 

“We were able to look at 

scientific practices beyond the 

classroom environment.’’ 

The data will also be used by 

district council staff as they implement 

their Draft Reserve Management 

Plan, which will become the 

guiding document for the future 

management of the lagoon, which 

is near the Lincoln township. 

The trip was funded through 

the Tait Foundation, which 

supports STEM subject (science, 

technology, engineering and 

mathematics) initiatives with a 

focus on students in Canterbury.

Teen bagpiper secures place 

in renowned Scottish comps

A TALENTED teenage 

bagpiper has been selected 

to take part in two of the 

most prestigious bagpiping 

competitions in the world. 

Maggie McConnochie, 14, 

recently won the New Zealand 

Under 21 Piobrairechd and the 

Comunn na Piobairechd silver 

medal – and has since been 

invited to compete in seven 

competitions in Scotland in 

August. It includes two of the 

most respected solo bagpiping 

events in the world, the 

Argyllshire Gathering and the 

Northern Meeting. 

Maggie, of West Melton, 

was the youngest person in 

the New Zealand awards 

categories. 

“It feels pretty good, but it 

feels unreal. It’s really exciting,” 

she said of the result. 

Maggie is likely to be the 

youngest taking part in 

Scotland, according to mum 

Delwyn, but says she tries not to 

let nerves get the better of her. 

“I do get a bit nervous, 

sometimes,” she said. 

“But I don’t get too nervous 

– I feel like I’m prepared 

and try not to think about it 

too much.” 

BLOWING UP A STORM: Teen bagpiper Maggie 

McConnochie has been invited to compete in two of 

the most respected solo bagpiping events in the world, 

the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting.

trip to Scotland, which will 

cost about $8600. She is 

selling cheese rolls and has 

set up a Facebook page 

– Piping Hot Cheese Rolls 

– where you can order and 

giving her a helping hand. 

Maggie spends between five 

and seven hours practising the 

bagpipes every week, alongside 

school, homework and sports. 

She also plays at rest homes 

and took part in the Rolleston 

Anzac parade in 2023, and led 

the dawn service parade in 

Twizel this year. 

Maggie first picked up 

the bagpipes when she was 

9-years-old. Under the tutelage 

of Richard Hawke (NZOM), 

she has gone from strength to 

strength. 

“Maggie wouldn’t be the 

piper she is without the support 

of her tutors. She’s really 

grateful for Richard’s expertise 

and guidance,” Delwyn said. 

Maggie hopes her success 

will inspire other girls to 

get into bagpiping. 

Females are significantly 

underrepresented in the solo 

piping world, making up about 

just six per cent.

BEAT THE QUEUES: Mt Hutt ski area is introducing shuttle services and car 

pool priority days in an effort to stop the early morning rush. 

Mt Hutt to run shuttle, 

car pool priority days

MT HUTT ski area is introducing 

subsidised shuttle services from Rolleston 

and Christchurch and ‘car pool priority 

days’ this winter. 

The new initiative is being introduced to 

stop the early morning rush of vehicles as 

skiers and snowboarders try to make it to 

the base car park before it fills up. 

The subsidised shuttle service from 

Rolleston at 7.30am and Christchurch at 

7am will cost skiers $30 return. 

The ski field will signal a priority day 

48 hours in advance on its website. 

On these days, the access road will open 

at 6.30am. Cars will be stopped at temporary 

inspection lanes at the information 

booth. 

Full vehicles will have priority stickers 

applied. Two-door cars will be considered

ANOTHER Totara tree was planted at 

Lincoln Wetlands on Ellesmere Rd last 

week to mark an award given to Selwyn 

youth, Tomas Smith. 

The Rotary young totara award 

recognises Tom’s leadership role with the 

Prebbleton Rugby Club, his involvement 

with Halswell Scout group and his help as 

a volunteer in the community. 

The Rotary award aims to “recognise 

youth with strength of character, courage 

and leadership ability in pursuit of 

excellence”. 

Planting of totara has been an annual 

event in Lincoln Rotary’s calendar and the 

tree planted recently was the seventh in 

the area. 

Mayor Sam Broughton, who presented 

the award said: “You contribute to the 

community in so many ways, and our 

community is based not only on what we 

have for ourselves but what we have to give 

away to other people, which aligns with 

the Rotary spirit. 

“The award honours what you have done 

before, but thinking about your future – 

who you are growing into and the paths 

that lay ahead.’’

road,” Mt Hutt ski area said. 

It expects to have 15 to 20 car pool priority 

days each season. 

Snowmaking will start soon on the 

mountain, which set to open on June 14.

at stake for Ellesmere teams in 

this weekend’s Luisetti Seeds 

combined country matches. 

Waihora will lock up a toptwo 

spot in pool B, and home 

advantage in the quarter-finals, 

with a win this weekend over 

Darfield, who themselves are 

chasing the top-two. 

They sit third, just one point 

behind Southbridge, while the 

pair have Kaiapoi and Ashburton 

Celtic breathing down their 

necks. 

If Darfield lose to Waihora, 

they’re at risk of dropping all 

the way to fifth – outside the 

quarter-final positions. 

In pool A, Prebbleton are 

sure of a quarter-final place but 

currently sit out of the spots for 

home advantage courtesy of 

an inferior points difference to 

Southern. 

They play Hornby this 

weekend but will have their 

sights set on a crunch match 

against Southern in the final 

round of games next weekend. 

Waihora head coach Hagen 

Schulte said his side weren’t 

focusing on where they’re at. 

“The boys obviously are aware 

where they sit, but we tend not to 

talk about it too much to be fair.’’ 

Schulte said Darfield, who secured 

a 26-all draw with Southbridge 

at the weekend, would be 

tough. They’re also fighting for a 

top four spot and pushing for the 

top two. 

“We sort of know what we’re 

in for if those two teams are that 

even so it’s going to be a big battle 

for us.” 

Regardless of the result, 

Waihora will have reason to 

celebrate, with their club day on 

Saturday. 

They will play in commemorative 

jerseys to mark the 

occasion – featuring the names 

of every registered player this 

season from juniors to division 1 


printed on the back. 

“We’re definitely gonna be up 

for it,” Schulte said. 

“You look forward to playing 

Darfield each year, so to have 

them on our club day as well 

makes it twice as good for us.”

SELWYN COMBINED’S head 

coach is hoping his side’s first-up 

loss provides some much-needed 

experience ahead of a tough 

match in the Miles Toyota 

Premiership this weekend. 

Selwyn went down 24-7 in their 

season opener to St Thomas on 

Friday night in a match where 17 

of their 22 players were on debut. 

Head coach Sidney Tauamiti believes 

that’s what most hampered 

his side. 

“I would put that down to 

nerves, inexperience. I think we’ll 

be better off for our first competition 

hit out.” 

He said they had shown a real 

stickability, which should work 

well for them throughout the 

season. 

This weekend they’ll take on 

Christ’s College, who won their 

opening game against Timaru 

Boys’ High 59-12. 

Tauamiti said Selwyn’s forward 

pack would need to front up. 

“We obviously want to stop 

their forward back before they 

get any sort of momentum. We’ll 

certainly need to bring our best.”

Stoliker is counting down to

Said his mother, Lesley Stoliker:

“He walked around Leeston 

the other week and just took his

senior men’s team, made the 

Bath Ruth series team after 

impressing at the Mid-Summer 

Blast in January, hosted by

Stoliker said he was working 

hard to achieve his dream. 

“It’s just outstanding, thank

Veggies and herbs – it’s still a great 

time to plant any of these straight into 

your garden: beetroot, bok choy, broccoli, 

cabbage, cauliflower, celery, garlic, kale, 

onion, parsley, peas, radish, rhubarb, 

rocket, rosemary, sage, spinach and thyme. 

Fruit trees – now and through till the 

end of July, plant fruit trees while they 

are dormant. There’s a good selection in 

nurseries now, including an abundance of 

citrus. 

It is also time to start pruning established 

trees that have finished fruiting. Choose 

a dry, fine day, to reduce the chance of 

disease. Non-citrus trees can also benefit 

from a summer cut to remove any dead 

branches and help manage the size of the 

tree, but winter pruning is easier. The trees 

are bare and you can see what you are 

doing to help shape the structure of the 

tree.

Veggies to start off indoors – bok choy, 

winter lettuce, onions, peas, cabbage, 

carrots and herbs. 

Veggies straight into your garden 

– cauliflowers, broccoli, spinach and 

silverbeet. 

Strawberries – this is the ideal 

time to plant them. They need to

frosts hit. Their fruit will be large 

and more flavourful in summer by 

enduring the cold weather first. 

Garlic – again, this is the perfect

Battening down for frosts

Frost season is hitting hard and fast. 

Here’s some simple and (mostly) free 

actions to get you ready. 

Home 

1. Check, dust and clean all your types 

of heating devices. If you’ve got a heat 

pump, clean the filters. 

2. Patrol the house for draughty doors 

and windows. Next time you’re at a DIY 

store, look into options like draught 

excluders, weather strips and caulking. 

But for an immediate response, make a 

door snake – or just roll up old towels. 

3. Good curtains are an essential 

heating tool. While very expensive new, 

most op shops have them, and this is not 

a time to be squeamish about colours! 

Canterbury also has the excellent 

Community Energy Action (CEA) 

curtain bank scheme, giving free good 

quality, lined curtains to any household 

that can’t afford them, including tenants 

and social housing. Just apply on their 

website. 

Utilities 

1. Check that your water mains tap 

is accessible and working. If your pipes 

freeze or burst, the urgent first step is to 

turn this off. 

2. Clear autumn leaves out of the 

gutters so they don’t frost into a clump. 

3. What with Transpower warnings 

about electricity supply shortfalls, keep a 

power-cut kit inside and findable in the 

dark: torch, gas camping stove, candles 

and matches, radio, batteries, bottled 

water if your water supply relies on a 

pump. 

Safety 

If your household has early starts, set 

aside in advance the materials that will 

help you leave the house safely. 

1. If your front step or path is prone 

to frost, keep a doormat to hand, inside, 

that can be quickly thrown over the 

slippery area. 

2. If your vehicle windows become 

iced, remember to apply cold water, not 

hot – and this is easy to prep the night 

before. 

3. For serious ice, use an ice scraper not 

any other tool – you might be able to pick 

up the official Selwyn District Council 

one for free at any of their facilities. 

After sorting out all that lot, you 

deserve to enjoy sitting inside your snug 

house appreciating the beauty of an 

icy frost, then making the most of the 

stunning sunny day that follows.

Prepping the garden for winter 


There’s something really satisfying about gardening 

in late autumn. I guess it’s because, after all the 

detailed, fiddly tasks of spring and summer, now 

everything’s bigger picture. You’re clearing. Raking up 

leaves, ripping out faded plants, re-living the pleasure 

of what worked well in summer and dreaming ahead 

to the next one… 

Here’s some key tasks to get done in these sunny 

autumn days. 

Before the frosts take over 

Pack away any hoses and attachments that you 

won’t need over winter. Wrap basic insulation around 

external taps – bubble wrap, sacking, old carpet. 

Harvest your last tomatoes and peppers, they will 

ripen indoors. 

Move frost-tender potted plants onto your patio or 

up against the house – or even inside, after checking 

them for stowaways. If too heavy to move, wrap 

insulation around the pot.

Before the wind takes over 

Check your trees – remove any dead, potentially

Before the shortest days come 

You’re a gardener, you need to garden. So, plant

veges for the bank balance, have a small gardening 

project running over winter that will force you to go 

outside and check it, while soaking up that precious 

Vitamin D. 

Before the rain takes over 

Do what might be your last main mow of the 

season. Mowing in winter’s heavy rain and muddiness 

can cause more damage to the lawn than it’s worth. 

So cut the lawn short now, on a sunny day, and you 

shouldn’t be too aesthetically horrified over winter. 

Do any strimming, raking and clearing. Again, this 

is unpleasant work in the wet, and it’s not healthy 

to leave rotting materials over the lawn and garden. 

Gather them into your compost, instead. 

Once you’ve cleared the old plants, and if you’ve 

planted any new trees, get mulching. In summer 

mulch is used to keep moisture in, but it also has

Getting the best out of 

your smoke alarms 


Smoke alarms are like seat belts – they 

are a safety campaign that is totally won 

in New Zealand. We all know we have 

to have them, news stories constantly 

reinforce the message and, thanks to 

strong Fire and Emergency (FENZ) 

campaigning, we all know we should 

check them at each daylight saving 

change. 

If we use them wrongly, they punish us 

– loudly! – so here’s some tips and tricks 

on getting the best out of your smoke 

alarms. 

New versions these days 

The standard domestic alarms are white, 

round units, known as photoelectric 

alarms. In older versions, the unit 

lasted for years but its 9-volt battery 

ran down after about a year, causing the 

smoke alarm to “chirp” an alert that is 

deliberately impossible to ignore. 

Although more expensive, the 

recommendation now is to buy the “10 

year” or “long life” style. These look the 

same but the batteries are encased within 

the alarm and you replace the whole unit 

at the end of its life. You should still check 

and clean them each 6 months. 

In a recent development, due to be 

formalised into the Building Code 

this November, new built homes and 

all existing homes having substantial 

building work must have interconnected 

alarms, either hard wired or wireless 

using a radio frequency/Bluetooth. If fire 

is detected in one room, all the alarms are 

triggered, alerting everyone sooner. 

Placement 

The focus for photoelectric alarms is 

living areas and within three metres of 

every room where someone sleeps. www. 

fireandemergency.nz has a clear diagram 

explaining this. 

Photoelectric alarms can be set off 

by steam, so if you want kitchen and 

bathroom alarms, use heat alarms. 

In frosty weather 

One major issue for Selwyn residents is 

that the operating temperature on most 

smoke alarms is 5°C to 45°C, so they are 

just not designed for our frosts. As the 

temperature approaches 0°C the battery 

struggles, thinks it’s running low, and 

either chirps or unleashes the full alarm… 

inevitably, just before dawn. 

If your alarms torment you in this way, 

consider moving their position (while 

still meeting the 3 metre guideline). Or, 

being strategic about which internal doors 

are opened or closed overnight might be 

enough to hold the heat in and avoid this 

disturbance. Or if you can afford to run 

the heating overnight, on low, that will 

certainly keep the alarms happy… and the 

house’s other occupants as well.

MILITARY EXERCISE 

Urban Warrior 

27–29 May 2024 

The general public is to be advised that a 

New Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted 

at 7 Hasketts Road, Templeton over the 

period 27–29 May 2024. 

The exercise will involve up to 40 personnel 

of 2/1 Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment 

from Burnham Military Camp. 

The training will involve soldiers conducting 

Urban Tactics Techniques and Procedures. 

This will involve the use of small arms and 

pyrotechnics during daylight hours. Military 

vehicles will be used to access the area. 

The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously 

and will ensure fire mitigation is present.

decluttering the yard to make a good 

impression on buyers. 

It’s a rare house that doesn’t have 

defects. Even newly renovated ones can 

have features that detract for buyers. 

But there are ways for sellers to deflect 

attention from them without pretending 

they’re not there. The three main ways of 

dealing with defects are: 

1. Fix them. 

2. Draw the eye away from them. 

3. Use them as a selling point. 

Simple defects can be fixed easily. Start 

out front. Overgrown bushes can be 

trimmed, or replaced with a few matching 

plants, old fences and front doors can be 

painted or stained, and the paths cleaned. 

Do this even if a property is a do-up. 

You want to give the impression that 

buyers can move into the house and chip 

away at the work in their own time 

If you have time and money, paint sills 

and eaves using accents. 

Inside, the first thing buyers see is the 

hallway, which can be brightened up with 

a lick of paint. The neutral paint trick can 

also be used to paint over dated wallpaper, 

completely changing the look and feel of a 

tired house. 

Bathrooms and kitchens are important 

to buyers, and the eye settles on vanities 

and benches. These can be resurfaced 

relatively quickly to give a modern look. 

If the seller can’t repaint or tile the 

bathroom bring in high quality matching 

towels, which become a feature in the 

room and draw the eye from the less than 

desirable walls and features. Nice vases 

and flowers will do the same. 

Replacing handles and knobs to draw 

attention away from the units themselves. 

This reduces the number of “I have to do 

this” thoughts in potential buyers’ minds. 

Drawing the eye away from a multitude 

of sins is exactly the thing to do. 

If you see an empty house the eye 

always goes to marks on the carpet 

and walls and this will lower the price 

expectation.” 

Drawing the eye to the furniture and 

furnishings, creates better flow, and de 

cluttering makes buyers feel the home 

would be a nice place to live in. 

The other way to handle the property’s 

defects is to raise them with the buyer 

before they see them. 

If the carpet is bad, for example, you 

can say: “Hey, they were going to replace 

the carpet but they decided to leave it to 

you to choose a new carpet and priced it 

accordingly.” 

Finally, good old fashioned elbow grease 

is essential in all properties to remove 

those sins that are simply cleanable.

Building a warm, energy 

efficient healthy home 

Six essentials to think about when you are building a new home 

1. Site position A home built with a 

northerly aspect to make use of the sun 

and protected from prevailing winds will 

be warmer and more efficient. If possible 

check your building site at different times 

of the day to see where and how the sun 

hits the property as well as looking out for 

any low lying areas. 

2. Sun According to energywise. 

govt.nz, the sun sends 500 Watts of heat 

through each square metre of unshaded 

window on sunny winter days. That’s a 

tremendous opportunity to harness the 

sun’s energy for your home. Adding solar 

panels to your roof is another form of 

utilising the sun to convert into power 

for your home. Choosing a house plan 

that is designed to make use of the sun’s 

energy will help reduce your power bills 

and create a warmer, healthier home 

throughout the year. 

3. Size & Shape Size, they say, is 

everything. However, you can have a 

bigger home that is both warm and 

healthy. The shape of your home will also 

help determine its ability to retain heat and 

its energy efficiency. Complex designs will 

require more planning and creativity when 

it comes to heating. Things to consider 

are the internal wall and ceiling height; 

number, size and placement of windows; 

as well as the shape and flow of rooms. 

Also, think about the areas you plan to 

use. Generally, the smaller and simpler 

the shape of the house, the easier it will 

be to heat and therefore be more energy

code, double glazing with insulated 

framing, minimalising plumbing and 

electrical services in external wall cavities 

and creating airtightness for external 

doors. 

5. Thermal mass This is a form of 

passive heating. Thermal mass is a solid 

material such as concrete, which absorbs 

the sun’s energy during the day and then 

releases that energy in the form of heat 

when temperatures drop. Use tiles in front 

of doors and floor-to-ceiling windows to 

help harness additional heat. 

6. Heating Along with an excellent 

northerly aspect and appropriate 

insulation, the planning and installation 

of an energy efficient heating system is 

essential – this could be a combination 

of heat pump and log/pellet/gas fire or a 

central heating system. Consider the size 

of your home and the day-to-day use of 

the rooms. Look for products that have an 

energy star ratings.

As gadgets, gizmos and technology 

become more prevalent in our everyday

with more homeowners opting for natural

Officially known as ‘biophilic design’, 

the concept sees architects and interior 

designers aiming to increase a home’s 

connection to the natural environment – 

while that may all sound quite sophisticated 

the basic ideals are pretty simple and, even 

better news, can be done without breaking 

the bank. 

Let there be light 

One of the simplest ways to keep your 

home – and yourself – connected with 

nature is to throw back the curtains to allow 

natural light to flood your home. This can 

be especially uplifting during the winter 

months when we’re dealing with fewer 

hours of daylight. Help emphasize all that 

gorgeous sunlight by painting windowsills 

and frames in a light colour. 

If it’s in your budget, you may even want 

to consider splashing out on some skylights, 

to really lighten the place up, or have some 

patio windows or bifold doors installed to 

bring your garden into your home. 

Keep it green 

Another simple trick to bring the 

outdoors indoors is to invest in some 

plants, and there’s options for pretty much 

every budget. As well as looking good, 

plants help purify the air, and some studies 

have suggested they help reduce anxiety 

and stress. 

Do a bit of research into which plants 

will work well with your lifestyle and 

environment. Cactuses and succulents are 

an excellent choice for those of us who 

weren’t blessed with green fingers, while a 

deep green leafy palm can bring a touch of 

elegance to your interiors. 

As a general rule, the higher your ceilings 

the taller you can go with your greenery but 

mix things up with a range of sizes to keep 

it looking interesting – you could even add 

a few hanging plants from your ceiling. 

If you’re new to plant buying, go for 

mature plants that are already a decent size 

and seek out unusual planters to add some 

extra oomph to your home. 

Wood you believe it? 

Wood finishes can make such a difference 

to your home - reclaimed timber, naturaluntreated 

wood and even bamboo can all 

be incorporated into your living spaces to 

make you feel closer to nature. 

You can go big on the theme by fitting out 

your home with wooden floors and natural 

wood furniture, or you can make a more 

subtle nod to the trend by adding smaller 

details such as wooden photo frames, 

bamboo bowls or natural-finished shelves. 

Mix and match different finishes and 

wood grains to add interest to your rooms 

– but try to keep to either warm or cool 

undertones to avoid things looking chaotic. 

Set in stone 

Natural stone is a design trend that’s here 

to stay and it’s easy to bring into your home: 

kit out your kitchen with marble or granite 

worktops, pop your new plants into stone 

planters, or add a touch of drama with slate 

tiles in your conservatory. Again, you can 

mix and match textures and tones to keep 

things looking chic. 

As well as improving the look of your 

home, natural stone is incredibly hardwearing, 

low maintenance and long 

lasting, meaning you’ll save money in 

the long run – it’s also environmentallyfriendly 

and more sustainable than manmade 

materials, such as plastics. What’s
