LocaL Businesses supporting their local community Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites Thousands of Christchurch families will have fond memories of enjoying the tasty food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet restaurant, which was located for many years in the central city. A New Zealand-wide franchise operation, the business went through many changes over the years, then with new owners taking over the company six years ago, it gained a new momentum. A third franchise was set up in Auckland, its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July 2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby. As company director Ron Lal explains, Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture and they wanted to retain that feeling of nostalgia, but with some new concepts added to the mix. “We wanted to offer our customers a new experience that’s up with the times, and with a modern twist on hospitality. “Customers have a lot more choice of food now,” he says, “for example you can choose your own meat, which will be cooked individually for you. We offer a big selection of dishes, seafood and desserts, and of course there are the familiar favourites that the children love, like the chocolate fountain and an endless supply of ice-cream. “We want to wow the customers and at the same time we want to create that nostalgic Valentines feel.” The Valentines tradition of a free meal for a customer on their birthday has been upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat and, of course, with the famous birthday song being sung by staff, too. Families are also invited to take advantage of the school holiday special from time to time. During the holidays, one child under the age of eight gets a free lunch if accompanied by a full paying adult. (T’s & C’s apply.) Thursday May 2 2024 5 Dancers set sights on international dreams • From page 1 Despite her nerves and it being her first time competing in the grand prix, Tamison was determined to show just how much talent “a little Kiwi dancer” could have. She was announced as winner after wooing the 31 international judges. Itwas also Hamish’s first time attending the grand prix. “It was an amazing experience. The competition opened a lot of doors. New Zealand is quite small so the YAGP has given me the opportunity to attend some big international schools,” he said. The pair, who both wish to become professional dancers, were invited to compete at the grand prix, which was held on April 11-20, at a qualifying regional competition in Sydney in September, where Tamison won the junior women’s category. The grand prix, which has been running for 25 years, saw about 2000 dancers from 30 countries compete in classical, contemporary and scholarship classes. Of those dancers, 500 juniors were selected to proceed to the finals, including the two Christchurch teenagers. Tamison credits her success to hard work, practice, never giving up, constant support and learning from her teacher at Convergence, Olivia Russell. Her mother Toni Soppet said Tamison’s highlights from the trip were getting to perform on the Lincoln Center stage in New York and meeting new friends, teachers and the grand prix team. “We’re very proud of her and still in a bit of shock. She has worked so hard. Her dedication and work ethic is like no other. “The talent (at the grand prix) was incredible with beautiful dancers inside and out.” Hamish, who has been dancing at Convergence for about a year after moving from the Southern Ballet Theatre, said Russell has been instrumental in helping with his ‘technically and artistically clean’ performance. “Ballet is an art form and one I enjoy as it gives me an escape from reality. HQ goes the distance Winter Warmer Deals PHILIP AND Monica McCormick say they sure have had some “Holden years” in their 1973 Holden Belmont HQ. The couple enjoy looking back on the fun times – as well as forward to future drives – in the Belmont, now parked outside their new home at Ryman’s Kevin Hickman Retirement Village. They say the Australian-manufactured, New Zealand-assembled car with the bench seats changed their lives. Not only were the family’s children brought home from Christchurch Women’s Hospital in it, but a few years down the line the Holden was also ferrying the four youngsters about. The versatile vehicle was a welcome addition to a busy life in Canterbury and sometimes on the Coast, they said. The couple married in Fox Glacier (Monica’s hometown) in 1967. They relied on Philip’s father’s Ford Thames Trader truck to get around ,until they bought the HQ in 1973. For daughters, Katrina and Kirstie, the couple remember there were sporting games to go to. “At primary school I used to take most of the netball team to sport . . . four used to be right in the very back, another four in the back seat, plus whoever was in the front,” Philip said. On holidays everyone, including sons William and Blair, hit the road in the Holden. The retirement village is close to the couple’s former Yaldhurst Rd home and some of the residents were former neighbours. Kevin Hickman Village manager Liz Hampton said the car provides a real talking point for those who know it is Philip and Monica’s pride and joy. The Belmont was brought new at Blackwell Motors in Christchurch, having come off a production line at a Lower Hutt assembly factory. The cars were partly made in Adelaide, in a CKD (completely knocked down) kits before being sent to Petone in crates for final full assembly.
