Avon Park revamp to start
THE $5.5 MILLION
redevelopment of Avon Park
in the Ōtākaro Avon River
Corridor will start next week.
Citycare has been awarded
the contract, which involves the
creation of the longterm
stopbanks, along
with an upgrade of
the park’s recreational
facilities, removal of
contaminated material,
planting, and a portion
of the City to Sea
Pathway.
City council red
zone manager Dave
Little said the redevelopment
will improve the community’s
recreational assets and local
ecology, while increasing the
river’s flood capacity.
“Restoration of the river’s
delta environment is a core
Dave Little
objective of the regeneration
plan and one that we’ve been
working closely with our treaty
partner Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri
on, via the corridor’s cogovernance
establishment committee
and collaboration
with the University of
Canterbury Ngāi Tahu
Research Centre.”
Little said it was pleasing
to see the project get
under way, particularly
as it was the first in the
OARC to embrace the
‘living on a river delta’
aspect of the regeneration
plan and the underpinning
framework developed
by Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri and the
establishment committee.
“This philosophy sees us
working with the river, rather
than attempting to constrain it
to accommodate our plans.
“This is important as the
future impacts of sea level rise
and more extreme weather
make inundation of low-lying
areas more likely, and increasingly
expensive to prevent,” he
said.
Construction will be carried
out in multiple phases and is
expected to be completed in
November 2025.
The park’s upgraded recreational
facilities will include a
nature-based play space, pump
track, exploratory trails, basketball
court, mini football field,
and barbecue area.
The City to Sea Pathway will
go through the park, providing
a safer option for cyclists
accessing Kerr’s Reach sport
clubs, as well as the general
public.
will include a basketball court, pump track and
Little said the city council
looked forward to returning the
upgraded facilities to residents,
who have supported the plans
for the new park and its community
amenities.
In line with the regeneration
plan and previous council
decision, the redevelopment
includes closure of the western
section of Avonside Drive bordering
Avon Park.
About 80,000 mostly native
trees and shrubs will be planted
as part of the project.
Little acknowledged the
support of the Christchurch
Earthquake Appeals Trust in
funding the upper terrace portion
of the project.
Start work notices will be
issued to affected residents
before construction gets
under way.
Board signs off on Māori immersion school
• By Dylan Smits
A LINWOOD-based Māori
immersion school is a step
closer to establishing a second
site in Diamond Harbour.
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board voted to recommend the
sale of a section of city council
land to the school’s backers
Nōku Te Ao Charitable Trust.
The city council will now consider
the land sale, with the date
still to be determined.
All board members voted in
favour of the proposal except
Luana Swindells who abstained
due to a conflict of interest.
The board will ask the city
council to help
address the
community’s
traffic
concerns when
considering
the land sale.
The board also
recommended
the site’s entry
should not
Cathy
Lum-Webb
impact the existing street layout
or alter existing streets.
“It was really good. It
was great to hear from the
community and hear the
legitimate concerns,” said
Lyttelton board member Cathy
Lum-Webb.
The board heard from the
school, Te Pā o Rākaihautū,
based in McLean St, as well
POTENTIAL: The block of
city council land in Diamond
Harbour is used for grazing,
but sections will be sold for
the construction of a Māori
immersion school.
as Ministry of Education
representatives.
Members of the public also
spoke at the board meeting with
submissions for and against the
planned school split. Some cited
the importance of recognising
Māori culture, while others
spoke of traffic concerns
for students travelling into
Diamond Harbour.
Ministry head of property
Sam Fowler said the
Government understood the
community’s concerns over
the potential for congestion on
the roads around the site and
coming into Diamond Harbour.
GROWTH: Te Pā o Rākaihautū, currently based at this McLean St site in Linwood, has been
approved to purchase land in Diamond Harbour for a second campus. PHOTOS: NEWSLINE
But he reassured them any
traffic issues will be solved.
The results of a city council
survey show Diamond Harbour
residents are in favour of
building a new fire station but
split on the school.
The survey, under taken in
February, found 50.9 per cent
of respondents from Diamond
Harbour were opposed to the
school being built, 34.9 per cent
were fully in favour, 8.9 per cent
were somewhat in favour, and
5.3 per cent were not sure.
I am truly grateful for the exceptional service provided by Cameron Bailey and
his team. Their dedication, professionalism, and effective communication
redefined the standard of real estate agent and instilled confidence in me
throughout the selling process.
Thanks to their hard work, I was made to feel very at ease every step of the
way. And the result is excellent considering current market conditions.
I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking a reliable and
trustworthy real estate agent.
Natural support for
healthy joints
Joint issues will affect most of us at some
point. They can appear in any joint, such as
the neck, back, shoulders, elbows, wrists,
hands, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surface between
moving bones that allows them to move
freely. It is constantly worn away and needs
to be rebuilt. This repair process slows down
for most of us as we age. The result is that
some joints do not have enough cartilage,
causing the joint function to be less smooth.
This is the most common form of arthritis,
osteoarthritis, leading to inflammation,
pain, stiffness, and reduced joint mobility.
Joint pain can also be a factor in falls.
Generally, joints with the most use or stress
show problems first.
Many people seek pain relief from their
doctor. The usual prescription is nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, or
NSAIDs, which offer pain relief but do
nothing to stop the progression of arthritis.
According to the British Journal of
General Practice, NSAIDs are not
recommended for long-term use and are
responsible for 30% of hospital admissions,
mainly due to internal bleeding, heart
attack, stroke and renal damage. Research
shows that all NSAIDs double the risk of
hospitalization due to heart failure.
Supporting the body with the proper
supplementary nutrients is beneficial in
SUPER LOW PRICE
helping joint health for many people.
A local Christchurch company, Kiwi
Natural Health or KNH, has produced an
advanced, high-potency formula called
“Joint Care Plus” to support healthy joint
function.
Inflammation of joints can cause pain
and slows the healing process. Joint Care
Plus contains turmeric, ginger and black
pepper to help reduce inflammation and
pain and enhance digestion and absorption
of nutrients. The formula also contains
nutrients that have been researched to
support joint health, including boron,
selenium, zinc, manganese, proline
and MSM, and the highly researched
glucosamine sulfate-potassium chloride
complex, as well as chondroitin sulfate.
This comprehensive formula is in an easyto-swallow
capsule. Due to the number
of nutrients in the formula, taking two or
three capsules once daily is recommended
to achieve the necessary amount of each
nutrient. A loading dose of three capsules
twice daily may be used in severe cases.
GROWTH: Trees for Canterbury long-time volunteer Ricky values the
friendships he’s made over 28 years.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
Volunteering ‘a
two-way street’
RICKY HAS been volunteering at Trees
for Canterbury for 28 years, spending his
time weeding, moving plants and keeping
other volunteers “in check”.
But most importantly, he’s been making
lifelong friendships and connections.
The 62-year-old spends two days a week
at the not-for-profit centre, contributing
towards the garden’s goal of planting two
million trees across Canterbury.
The well-established community organisation
promotes a sense of involvement
and education for physically and intellectually
disadvantaged people – working to
save the earth while they’re at it.
Ricky’s work at Trees for Canterbury
started in 1996 when the centre was at
its old site at Opawa Rd, meaning he’s
seen the organisation grow, change and
develop over the years.
He said his years of experience allow
him to arrive in the morning and know
just what needs to be done.
“When I see a job, I get it done – I’ve
been here long enough that I don’t need to
be told anymore,” Ricky said.
While his work at the centre began
because of a passion for plants, it has been
his workmates and sense of comraderie
that’s kept him for so long.
“It’s been 28 years over the two sites,
and it’s all about the people for me,” Ricky
said.
“There’s been volunteers come and go,
some ending up being permanent workers,
and I’ve been here to help them all
through it.”
Ricky said he’s far from retirement, with
at least another 10 years of volunteering
ahead of him.
Trees for Canterbury manager Steve
Bush said volunteers are the backbone of
“Our volunteers really get something
out of the work they do, it gives them a
said Bush.
“This is more than just an
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
Winter
Warmer
SubSidy
Warmer KiWi HomeS
Programme
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their
eligibility for a subsidised heat pump are
welcome to get in touch for details and
help with the application process.
Upgraded Lexus RX a major leap forward
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
LEXUS HAS dispensed with
evolutionary change, and gone
full-out revolutionary with the
latest version of its RX, its longest
serving hybrid SUV, and one of
its best sellers.
The cost of getting on to the
RX ladder is getting steeper so
mind your step.
It starts at $120,990 for the RX
350h 2.5P, in Limited guise you
will pay $131,990 and a $135,990
bounty is on the head of the
Enhancement Pack RX. Shaking
$142,990 out of your new luxury
SUV piggy bank gets you behind
the wheel of the 2.4-litre turbo
hybrid F SPORT, the tearaway
excitement machine of the new
RX family.
The RX 350h features a nonturbo
2.5-litre petrol hybrid
powertrain, E-Four all-wheel
drive system – both cut and paste
jobs from the Toyota Highlander
and standard in three of the four
model range.
The outlier is the 273kW RX
500h F Sport. To put that into
context, that output betters
the standard powertrain used
across the rest of the range by a
whopping 90kW.
While it’s the entry point into
the RX club, the 350h offers a
high standard of luxury and
premium materials.
The Limited model supplied
for this road test takes things
up a level with standard 21-inch
dark metallic alloy wheels,
world first BladeScan adaptive
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
8; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling 7; Value
for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
high-beam headlights for a truly
illuminating night-time driving
experience.
Parked up in the engine bay is
a top-notch self-charging hybrid
electric drivetrain, featuring a
highly efficient Atkinson cycle
2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol
engine.
Light, compact and matched
with a power dense electric
motor it delivers a more than
handy combined output of
184kW.
It made a positive statement
with its purposeful pulling
power from standing starts.
Energy levels taper off a tad
at higher revs, a space where
the hybrids aren’t so effective.
Nonetheless, it underlines the
advances Lexus have made and
continue to make with this
technology.
A good example of this was
the test vehicle’s ability to run
for lengthy periods on electricity
alone in urban driving. The crisp
shifting auto is hard to fault
largely because it rarely ever
deviates from the high standard
it sets.
Flat-folding rear seats create
a large rear cargo area. There’s
an abundance of front and rear
legroom, headroom, although
the latter is a touch tighter for
taller back occupants than I
expected. Some will lament the
loss of the third row that was a
big draw card in the previous
model.
The RX is armed with the latest
Lexus Safety System + package
providing advanced safety and
accident prevention technologies.
These either warn the driver of a
collision or help them reduce the
severity of an impact.
Safety features include a radar
based pre-collision system with
autonomous emergency braking
and all-speed dynamic radar
cruise control.
Independent suspension
delivers a nice blend of comfort
and handling. AWD maximises
traction across a broad range
of road surfaces and weather
conditions.
Given its height and weight,
the RX was nimble and easy
to manage over twisty terrain.
However, this isn’t an overtly
sporty SUV. I suspect that
mantle sits firmly with the new F
Sport turbo.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
