A Letter from
Rich Anderson
Executive Director/CEO
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our community and the world in
unprecedented ways.
Each day has brought more uncertainty, and yet we’ve come together to protect
those most in need – including the animals.
Our community is strong and – thanks to caring friends like you – Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League's work to save and protect animals has never
stopped. Unlike many shelters around the country, we’ve been able to keep our
doors fully open to help the abandoned, lost and injured animals that need us
every day. But we could not do it without you.
And that is why we wanted to dedicate the cover of this issue of The Shaggy
Sheet to say “Thank You!”
Your support today, during this crisis, has never been more important. Or
more appreciated because we know COVID-19 is hurting everyone in one way
or another.
Words can never fully express how much your support means to us, to the
animals and to the community.
Please take care of yourself and be safe. We will get through this challenging
time. And we will get through it together.
With compassion for the animals.
Rich Anderson
P.S. Please contact me anytime if you have questions or would like to visit and
EVERYDAY HEROES: VOLUNTEERS
" Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ' What are you doing for others?' "
— Martin Luther King, Jr.
We are humbled by the women and men, young
and old(er), who answer that question – “What are
you doing for others?” – through their volunteer
commitment to the mission of Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League.
Saving lives. That is what they do each and every
day. Without the nearly 600 people who actively
donate their time, energy and expertise each year,
Peggy Adams would struggle to save even one life.
And volunteer support has never been more critical
than during this COVID-19 pandemic. While many
shelters around the country have had to limit how
many homeless animals they can help, our volunteers
have allowed Peggy Adams to keep its doors open in
order to keep saving lives. To our volunteers – our
“everyday heroes” – we salute you!
You, too, can be a Peggy Adams
Volunteer
There are over 50 different volunteer
roles you can play as a Peggy Adams
Volunteer… and we add new ones
all the time!
COVID-19 AND YOUR PETS
As you have probably seen in the news recently, two
domestic cats in separate areas of New York and a dog
in North Carolina have tested positive for COVID-19.
Based on the sheer volume of COVID-19 cases in
the United States, this news is not surprising nor is
it cause for alarm. While it remains clear that more
information is needed to fully understand this disease
in both humans and animals, there is still no evidence
that pets can transmit COVID-19 to people.
Routine animal testing is not recommended by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),
nor the American Veterinary Medical Association
(AVMA).
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19, however,
should consider their pets exposed and possibly
infected.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League continues to
encourage the following:
People ill with COVID -19:
Restrict contact with pets and other animals,
just as they would restrict their contact with
other people.
Have an emergency plan in place that includes
arrangements for another member of the
household or business to take care of feeding
and otherwise caring for any pets.
If they have a service animal or they must care for
their animals, including pets, wear a
cloth facemask; don’t share food, kiss,
or hug them; and wash their
hands before and after any
contact with them.
People NOT ill:
Keep cats indoors and refrain from having pets
interact with people outside of the household.
Utilize social distancing for both you and your
pets when out on walks.
Interact with their animals as they normally
would, including feeding and otherwise caring
for them.
Continue to practice good hygiene during
those interactions (e.g., wash hands before and
after interacting with their animals, including
handling of food, supplies, and waste; keep
food, water, and any supplies used to deliver
them clean; remove soiled bedding and replace
as appropriate).
As always, it is critical that individuals have an
emergency plan in place for pets ahead of time to
ensure that their pet’s care, food, medication and other
supplies are readily available should they need to enact
the plan.
Dr. Beth Keser
is Peggy Adams’
Director of Medical
Services and has
been with the
organization since
2011. She leads
a team of five
other full-time
veterinarians and
45 medical support
staff. Dr. Keser is a graduate of Tuskegee
University School of Veterinary Medicine and
received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
degree in 1997. She is AAHA Accredited
and is a Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Fellow at
University of Wisconsin/University of California
Davis Schools of Veterinary Medicine.
3 KEY PARTS OF YOUR EMERGENCY PLAN
It is more important than ever to create a plan for
your pet in case you get sick.
1 Know the Facts
According to the CDC, there is no evidence that
people can get COVID-19 from pets. The best
place for your animal is inside the home they know
and love. If you aren’t feeling well but are still able
to care for your pet, please keep them at home with
you where they’re most comfortable.
2 What to do if you get sick
If you become too ill to care for your pet, who can
take over for you? Ideally, that person already lives in
your home. If not, identify a neighbor, family member,
friend, or coworker who could take them in. In fact,
it is best to identify two people (in case one ends up
not being able to help). Speak with them now so they
are prepared if they are called on to care for your
beloved pet.
3 Prepare a Pet Supply Kit
Don’t wait! Prepare your pet supply kit today because
you may need it tomorrow. Your kit should include:
n Name and contact information for the person
who can care for your pets
n Name and contact information for your backup
in case your go-to is no longer able to help
n Food, treats, a leash, a couple of toys, and any
other supplies necessary to care for your pet for
at least two weeks
n A crate or carrier to transport your pet
n Vaccination records
n Collar with ID tags
n Make sure your pet’s microchip info is up to
date, including emergency contact information
n Medications and prescriptions, along with
instructions
n Detailed care instructions (your pet’s diet,
walking routines and any important
behavioral notes)
n Your vet's contact information
Special thanks to everyone who donated
WORDS FROM OUR FOSTERS…
In early March, Peggy Adams and shelters
nationwide put out an urgent call for people to
consider becoming Foster Volunteers. And caring
people responded in unprecedented numbers!
Since the first days of this crisis, we have been
overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the
community. Today, more than 600 local residents are
providing temporary homes for abandoned dogs,
cats, kittens and puppies. These are a few of
their stories.
Amanda
& Chloe
I wouldn't have space to foster! Opening your home
and your heart to a foster animal is an incredible
experience. If you're thinking about taking
that jump, do it, you won't regret it!”
Amanda Erb, Chloe’s Foster Parent
Cindy
“I decided to foster cats because I am
a lifelong cat lover. With my job,
however, I travel a lot and cannot
rightfully have a pet. Since all
the craziness in the world
started, I, like many people,
have been laid off from work.
So, I now can offer my
home to Cindy and
Nelson to show
them the love they
desperately need,
and they can give me
companionship in this
time of isolation.”
Nelson
“I started fostering in 2013, but from a young age I
was always involved in some sort of animal rescue.
Fostering is so important because you truly get to
know the dogs’ personality (what makes them happy,
sad, frustrated, excited, etc.), and that information is
what helps match a dog to the perfect adopter, setting
them up for success!
I have fostered over 50 dogs and "foster failed" with
one. He was a keeper! I've had everything from
Goldendoodles to Pitbulls (which are my personal
favorite) and can happily say that fostering has
become the best kind of addiction. There is nothing
better than saving a dog then sending them off to
their forever home and watch them flourish. I can't
tell you how many people have said, "I could never
foster. I would keep them all," and I never understood
that. I wouldn't want to keep them all because then
Tom Bider, Cindy and Nelson’s Foster Parent
“My boyfriend and I have so much fun with Bart, he's
really such a joy to have in the house. We wanted to
foster a dog when the COVID-19 quarantine came
into effect, particularly an older dog that would
benefit from being out of the shelter. We found Bart
on the website and knew he was perfect – he had such
a goofy look, and it has turned
out perfect! He loves to
play with his toys, he
acts like a puppy
sometimes, and he's
really helped keep
our spirits up while
at home!”
WORDS FROM OUR FOSTERS… CONTINUED
“Kizmet (aka Noodles)
is living her best life.
It has been great
to have her to
spoil and love
on. Her shining
personality is
so amusing at
times. She is
such a good
girl. Having this
Noodles
little fur nugget
around has been
nothing short of a
blessing for us. She is a
definite angel. I have no idea
how to repay the gratitude we have experienced, but I
will do my best. Thank you all so much, for everything
you guys do. Love you all.”
Patrick McMenamin, Kizmet’s (aka Noodles)
Foster Parent
Harper
Trevi
“How to cope with a stay-at-home order? Foster a
puppy – a really BIG puppy! We adopted Harper,
our Labrador Retriever, five years ago from Peggy
Adams when he was almost 2 years old. We never
went through the puppy phase. Fostering 9-month-old
Trevi, a sweet and very lively Golden Retriever, turned
our house upside down! Thanks to Harper’s coaching
(they really do learn from playing with one another),
a great vet, and a helpful friend who is a dog trainer,
Trevi settled in and we were thrilled to adopt him 3
weeks later. The Foster team at Peggy Adams were
wonderfully responsive and that is saying a lot – they
are helping more than 600 other families fostering at
this time! The whole experience makes us so proud
to be a part of Peggy Adams. And seeing Harper and
Trevi romping together is a blessing we could never
have anticipated from this unprecedented time in
our world.”
Kim Hanson and Michael Sinkover, Trevi’s Foster
Parents and now Adopters
“Fostering a lonely pup in need has always been
something that I have wanted to pursue. Since I have
started working from home, I decided it was the
perfect time to start. I have
been fostering for a few
weeks now and it is
something that
I would like to
continue doing,
even after the
quarantine has
come to an
end. Fostering
to me is the
perfect way to
enjoy having a
dog without the
life-long very serious
commitment, and it helps
both the shelter and the dog in the long run. It is a
wonderful feeling to watch a foster pets’ personality
bloom while under your care. Giving them to their
furever home in the end can be sad but knowing that
they now have a family to call their own makes it
every bit worth it.”
Bridget Gillaspie, Houston’s Foster Parent
Houston
Special thanks to ALL our fosters and volunteers
for helping during COVID-19 and continuously
throughout the year! Because of your care and
compassion, you make it possible for us to save
more lives.
HAPPY TAILS: ADOPTION UPDATES
Maddox
– Kristen and Jesse
“Mako is happy,
healthy, growing and
THRIVING in her
new home. She loves
snuggling, going
outside and playing
with her sister, Monkey.”
– Chelsea
“Maddox is a wonderful new
addition to our family. He
fits right into our pack.
We did our research
before bringing him
home and learned that
the Siberian Husky
requires a lot of daily
exercise to keep happy.
Both myself and my husband
have lost 20 pounds!” #huskydiet
Mako
“Finn came into our home at
the most perfect time. We were going through a lot
of transition after the loss of our 13-year-old tabby,
who we had to guide across the rainbow bridge after a
devastating long cancer diagnosis. Finn came in and
patched a void in our hearts, not only for my husband
and I, but also his new sisters – Kitkat and Duchess.
It was the best decision we could have made to bring
him home.
Thank you, Peggy
Adams, for
making this
process so
Finn easy for us.
Finn has
been the
bright light
my family
needed
during such
a dark time
in our lives,
and we will be
forever grateful.”
– The Concepcion Family
Marley
“I adopted Marley 3
months ago. She is
doing great. I always
say – I didn’t rescue
Marley, she rescued
me. Thank you!”
– Lucy
“We LOVE our sweet
Casper, a 12-year-old
Maltese. He was timid at
first but became comfortable
quickly. He loves to play and sleeps in a soft dog bed
on my brother’s bed. My brother Johnny is a 63-yearold
man with Autism. He loves Casper. What a great
time to adopt our new family member, while we are
self-isolating these past few weeks and with more
ahead. We have plenty of time
to spend together. We
love our fuzzy little
guy. Thank you so
much!”
– Regina
“We adopted
Darwin three
months ago.
He has settled
in and has more
love than he
can handle! He loves
to play with the dog's
tail, and he loves playing
with our other cat Molly. He is the perfect addition to
our family. We thank Peggy Adams every day and
feel so grateful that this
beautiful kitten was
rescued and is now
ours. Thanks to
Peggy Adams,
Darwin will now
live a long and
Darwin loving life!”
PEGGY'S PANTRY
Peggy’s Pantry steps in to help those affected by COVID-19
Thank you to everyone – individuals and businesses
– who stepped up to support the less fortunate
members of our community during this crisis. We’ve
all seen the images on television and in the papers
of people – suddenly jobless – in long lines of cars
waiting and hoping to receive a meal or food to get
them through the week.
But what about their pets? Peggy’s Pantry – our free
food pantry for people struggling to feed their
animals – has experienced a massive spike in calls
from people in need of help. Without pet food
assistance, what would happen to their animals?
Would a person need to make the heartbreaking
decision to give up their beloved dog or cat?
Before this COVID-19 pandemic, Peggy’s Pantry
would distribute roughly 1,500 lbs. of food during a
typical week. Now, that weekly distribution amount
has sometimes more than tripled. Thanks to friends
like you, we have been able to meet the needs of our
community – and keep pets with the people they love
and who love them.
If you or someone you know needs pet food
assistance, please call 561.686.3663 or email
PeggysPantry@PeggyAdams.org to schedule
an appointment.
To donate food and other critical items, please
visit PeggyAdams.org/Peggys-Pantry. There
you will find a link to our “Urgent Needs Amazon
Wish List” where you can purchase items that
will be delivered quickly and directly to Peggy
NEW HUMANE EDUCATION
We’re excited to announce our NEW Humane Education Program!
Humane Education teaches people of all ages to
respect all life on the planet and feel empowered to
take action and help make the world a better place.
Peggy Adams’ Humane Education Program believes
that people, animals, and the environment are
connected. Through humane education programs,
together, we can all make a lifetime of good choices
in our treatment of all living things and the world
we share.
We are pleased to share that the Humane Education
Program is now up and running. We have launched
the program with virtual Storytime sessions reading
to our adoptable animals. Next, will be a variety
of programs for all ages – including camps, tours,
workshops, and birthday parties!
The launch of the new Humane Education Program
precedes the anticipated opening of the new
Pet Adoption Center at Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League coming this Fall. The new Humane
Education Program is funded thanks to Spring
artwork is also now featured on Peggy Adams’ TNVR t-shirts. We wish her all the
best in winning her Gold Award, but she is already a winner in our eyes!
LOCAL
Local Brewing Company Promotes Adoptable Dogs & Cats from
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League on Specialized Beer Cans
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is committed
to helping all the animals in our care find forever
homes. A new collaboration aims to help raise
awareness on some of the long-term dogs and cats at
Peggy Adams by featuring them on limited edition
beer cans! Yes, beer lovers can now enjoy a craft beer
from Mathews Brewing Company with a shelter
pet on the can! Not only does this promotion raise
awareness for some adorable animals needing a home,
but one dollar from every can sold goes to support the
mission of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.
This unique partnership began through the years of
Mathews Brewery Company being the location of
choice for the incredibly popular Bark Back Benefit, a
musical extravaganza benefiting Peggy Adams hosted
by local favorite band, Spred the Dub.
All the selected animals are long-term adoptable
animals at Peggy Adams. Angela has already been
adopted. Trooper and Squish are still currently
looking for their forever homes. Mathews Brewing
Company is located at 130 S. H Street in Lake Worth,
Florida.
Thank you to current members
of the Leadership Circle...
April Lewis with Zola by her side.
Rose is purring while eyeing a treat
as Fiona and Luigi-Liam look on.
They are gathered in the monarch
butterfly sanctuary April has
established in her back yard.
Some people toss a coin when making a big
decision. April Lewis rescued Zola!
Deciding between California and Florida for a move
to sunnier climes ten years ago, April, a devoted
animal advocate from Chicago, saw the story of a
beautiful Lhasa Apso who had been languishing
in a south Florida shelter for 3 years. That was the
deciding factor! April and her cat Fiona moved to
Florida, brought Zola to their new home, and since
then have added Rose (a sweet kitty found on the
streets of Miami Beach at only 2 weeks old), and
Luigi-Liam, left at April’s door by someone who
knew she would care for him.
“I was very active with PAWS Chicago and A.R.F.
(Animal Rescue Foundation) there, and wanted to
be part of as reputable an organization here in my
new home,” she remembers. “I investigated many
rescues upon moving here, but when I found Peggy
Adams, I felt like what I was meant to do with my
life at this time was to be a part of that wonderful
organization!”
April became a Grand Patron of the Leadership
Circle, stating “this place exceeded all my
expectations of what a rescue organization should
be.” She kindly says that “it is really an honor for me
to be a ‘Peggy.’ The leadership, the mission, each and
every person who works with the animals – all are
first-rate.” Rich Anderson, Peggy Adams’ Executive
Director/CEO, states, “dedication, compassion and
commitment like April’s are powerful things. Her
support, and the support of so many others with her
vision, are the reason we have been able to do our
life-saving work for 95 years.”
GREY WHISKERS WITH BENEFITS
Why adopt a puppy or kitten when you can get a
dog or cat that comes with so many more benefits?
There are countless reasons to adopt an adult or
senior pet, but here are just a few:
We don’t need constant attention or training like a
puppy or kitten: We are almost always housetrained
so no pee or poop accidents in the house. And, try
telling a puppy to hold it until the morning. Forget
about it! And if you want to teach us new tricks, we
have much longer attention spans which means we’ll
learn much faster.
When it comes to personality – what you see is what
you get: Our personality is already developed so you’ll
be able to spot the characteristics you're looking for
and not be surprised by some new, annoying behavior
that pops up next year.
You will get an instant friend for life: We love deeply.
We are usually incredibly affectionate and loyal. When
you open your heart and home to us, we really do
show our appreciation for the rest of our lives.
But wait… there’s MORE!
When you adopt one of us, Peggy Adams will:
– Waive our adoption fee (zero, zilch, nada!)
– Give us a free ID tag and
– Provide for FREE:
A yearly wellness exam
Monthly flea and heartworm preventatives
Annual vaccinations
Lifetime support for any current medical ailments
(Palm Beach County requires a $20 rabies tag fee for county residents)
And, lastly… You are truly saving a life: We know
how it works. Even with all the benefits we bring, we
see puppies and kittens get adopted lickety-split each
day while we can wait weeks, even months for our
new, loving humans to choose us. But when you adopt
one of us, you become our savior. And, we will love
you forever!
KITTEN NURSERY
Hundreds of lives saved thanks to
South Florida’s only intensive care
unit for kittens
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League opened its
Neonatal Kitten Nursery in 2016 – a revolutionary
approach to saving the lives of kittens born on the
streets and separated from their mothers. The nursery
remains the only one of its kind in South Florida.
Typically just hours old, they can’t walk, see or eat
on their own. To survive, they need 24-hour care,
including being fed by hand every two hours by a
rotating crew of staff and volunteers.
Thanks to caring and generous individuals and
foundations, we are now able to give more than 700
of these fragile creatures a fighting chance to grow
into health and
happy cats.
How can you help?
NEW PET ADOPTION CENTER UPDATE
The new Pet Adoption Center is really taking
shape. By mid-April, the full outline of the
building had become visible and the roofs
almost completed on the Dog Adoption
Wings. The Cat Adoption Wing is fully
outlined as is the Office Wing. Construction
continues and remains on schedule to be
completed by the end of 2020.
Construction is fully underway for the new Pet
Adoption Center at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League. Slated to be completed by the end of 2020, the
Center will have the capacity to double the number
of lives rescued, enabling Peggy Adams to save
thousands more dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.
The new Center features a Cat Adoption Wing at the
east end of the structure and three Dog Adoption
Wings. The Cat Adoption Wing includes four large,
group cat apartments with catios, allowing the animals
to access freely an outdoor area facing butterfly
gardens. A central cat tower with condos for cats who
prefer to be housed individually fills the center of the
Cat Adoption Wing, with Cat Colony Rooms for small
groups of related kitties facing the lobby and along
the north wall.
Dog Wings include large Dog
Adoption Rooms for groups of
compatible animals as well as
individual dog kennels, all with
outdoor patios readily accessed
by the animals housed there. At
the end of each wing, there is an
outdoor dog play yard where daily
play groups will be held, covered to
protect from strong sun and rain,
and with fans to circulate and cool the air.
To the rear of the Cat Adoption Wing are located the
veterinarian office, volunteer office, a large volunteer
workroom/conference room, a volunteer lounge and a
general conference room, as well as a grooming room,
photography studio and pharmacy.
Commemorative bricks will be laid in the entryway
to the new center as well as in the outdoor café area,
while trees and benches honoring special pets and
family members will be featured throughout the
grounds and the visitors’ areas.
The easiest way to support the animals
Joining the Monthly Giving Circle is the easiest, most
efficient way to save lives in our community.
Your monthly gift offers numerous benefits:
As someone who loves animals, you know they
need care every day. Food, safe shelter and medical
treatment are just some of the basic needs
of animals staying at Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League.
The love is free, but the other costs add up! That’s why
you’re invited to join our group of dedicated friends
as a Monthly Giving Circle member. For more than 95
years, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has been
saving the lives of animals right here in Palm Beach
County, but none of it would be possible without
regular monthly gifts from loyal Monthly Giving Circle
supporters.
You provide a steady source of support and
consistent funding to care for local animals.
You will receive fewer mailings – allowing the
League to spend less on paper and postage so it
can help more animals in need.
You have the flexibility to change the amount of
your gift or cancel at any time.
Sign up today and you’ll receive a free calendar
honoring your support of the animals!
Monthly Giving Circle members are at the heart
of what we do at Peggy Adams. By setting up an
automatic gift each month, you ensure there are
resources to help care for every homeless animal that
comes through our doors.
NEW CHARITABLE GIVING INCENTIVES
Two Important Changes Benefiting Charitable Giving in The CARES Act
Information is drawn from an article by Professor Christopher
Woehrle, Chair & Professor of Tax & Estate Planning Department,
College for Financial Planning, Centennial, Colorado. The article is
titled “The Cares Act: Harbinger of Seismic Changes to Charitable
Giving Incentives?”
The CARES Act, passed
in March 2020, contains
two provisions that
benefit you when giving
to the charities you care
about. While it is not
clear if these provisions
will continue past 2020, it
would be good to be aware of
them for this year.
H H H
CARES ACT
“Among the over 100 provisions of the Coronavirus
Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act are
two directly related to charitable giving. The first is
an above-the-line deduction against gross income in
the amount of up to $300 for charitable contributions
made after December 31, 2019 by filers taking the
standard deduction. Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
has eliminated the deductibility of charitable giving
for past itemizers now taking the standard deduction,
this is welcome news. Although the tax relief is
modest, it is a dollar-for-dollar reduction against
gross income.” This provision is only available to
donors taking the standard deduction. This provision
does not apply to noncash gifts or to donations made
through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF).
“The second is the temporary suspension during 2020
of the AGI limitation for cash charitable contributions
to public charities.” Two types of contributions are
not eligible for this provision: (A) contributions to a
Donor Advised Fund (DAF) and (B) contributions to
509(a)(3) organizations. “Congress wants cash going
directly to the charities themselves, not to funds where
gifts are parceled out over time.”
With gifts made directly to 501(c)(3) organizations,
like Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, “It is
theoretically possible for charitable giving to erase
Federal income tax liability for 2020. To the extent
such contribution generates a carryforward, it will be
available for up to 5 years.”
For corporations, the annual charitable contribution
limit, usually 10 percent of AGI, is increased to 25
percent and donations of food by corporations would
increase from the 15 percent cap to 25 percent
in 2020.
Please consult your tax advisor
to learn specifically how
The CARES Act
provisions may
benefit you.
THANK YOU
At Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, animals are still entering our care every day and relying
on us for lifesaving medical care, food, and shelter. While our daily operations have changed to help
prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, one thing remains certain: We're here for the animals.
Special thanks to our
compassionate supporters –
including Toni & David Kamsler,
Laurie Raber Gottlieb & Steven
Gottlieb, Eunice & Nick Rubio, and
Lowe's (store # 1962), – who have
surprised our staff by donating
pizza lunches in recognition of
their lifesaving work.
Special Thanks to our Corporate Partners!
