Renewable & Green Energy
Breaking The Clean Energy
Migration Barriers
Over the years, several
records have shown the
progress and developments
in the renewable energy
sector. This good news
threatens several renewable
energy opponents, which often
results to spreading reliability
misconceptions about
renewable energy resources.
One argument presented by
these opponents is its
reliability to provide enough
power for nations. Contrary
to these misconceptions,
resources such as solar and
wind are proven to be highly
reliable, safer and more
accessible compared to coal,
gas and nuclear.
March
Cyber Attacks in the
Renewables
The growth of renewable
energy and the increased
availability of technologies like
sensors and big data makes
cyber defense even more
challenging. But for sure, there
is a rationalized solution to
safeguard the renewable
energy industry. Whatever that
is, it should be applied now.
April
Virtual Reality for the
Renewable Energy Industry
This virtual reality experience
lets them to go to a virtual
place that mimics wind
turbines, allowing them to see,
hear, and feel what it is like to
be near a wind turbine without
necessarily going there
physically. They are given
tasks and are armed with the
tools needed to ficx a wind turbine.
Wind turbines are found
in remote areas of the North
Sea so only a few
people can see them
personally.

Mobile Apps for Renewable
Companies
Mobile apps are certainly big
hits in this millennium. Go to
your app store and you can
find a multitude of apps that
are made for nearly anything
you can think of. Social
media, hotel bookings, flight
bookings. Name it and you
will surely find tons of it in
the internet. With this kind of
prevalent use, what better
way to make use of this trend
than making it a social
platform for renewable energy
awareness. Technologies in
these clean energy sources
are paving its way to
eradicate our current dependency
on the fast-depleting
fossil fuels. And thanks to the
widespread use of mobile
apps, may it be free or paid,
the “switch to renewable
energy” movement is
reaching tens and thousands
of people across the globe.
July
We Rely on Alternative Energy
Sources
Conversely, the argument
from governments: oil, coal
and natural gas companies
is that until renewable
energy sources become more
feasible as major energy
providers, the only substitute
in meeting the increasing
demands for energy from a
growing global population
that requires more and more
energy is to endure extracting
fossil fuel assets.

Sustainable Energy
Generation Life Hazards
Four out of the 5 fatal injuries
were caused by falls, while
the other was attributed to a
motor vehicle accident. “One
of the biggest challenges
with these industries is their

September
The Renewable Energy
Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity will break the
homogeneous thinking of a
group helping to come up
with better decisions and
innovations. As years pass,
more and more people
recognize the value of solar
panels, wind energy, and
others. Hiring women in the
renewable industry can fill the
skills gap, knowing that this is
currently in demand as more
people advocate to help the
environment.
October
IoT in the Green Energy
Industry
With IoT integrated with green
energy, everything is more
flexible and efficient. Users
need not worry about manually
controlling their IoT appliances
and devices as anything
connected to the network can
be automatically set depending
on the user preference.
This will ultimately lead to more
environment-driven decisions
in the household and lesser
energy consumption.
November
The Renewable Energy Politics
The adoption of renewable
energy sources in a country
basically requires two things:
policies and money. Without
policies to dictate what and
what not to do, the private
investors chose to not participate
in the advancement since
this poses a high risk in their
investments. And since most
of the renewable energy technologies
require funds to be
implemented, this serves as a
major downfall in the spreading
of the technology.

The Safest Water Dispenser in the Philippines
They say that water is the lifeblood of all
things. It’s necessary for healthy living
and a happy mood. However, the ironic
thing is, a lot of people in urban areas in
the Philippines just don’t drink enough. For some
reason, office workers and frequent over-timers
aren’t hydrated enough. It may be the stresses of the
corporate life, the stigma that the only beverages
one needs in this day and age are coffee and alcohol,
or the inadequacy of the current water dispenser
in the office. TOSOT may not have a solution to
change the working or drinking behaviors of
people, it does have one of the best solutions for the
third reason: the TOSOT Water Dispenser.
Its two types, the Bottom Load Water Dispenser
and Table Top Water Dispenser, are kitted with a
wide array of features aimed to appease the
thirstiest of people.
It’s not every day an employee comes up to their
office water dispenser and, while filling their
tumbler, thinks about how they can have better
quality drinking water—it’s simply an uncommon
thought but one that is definitely worth thinking
about. Like all things, problems appear when one
looks closely and takes in the daily routines of
getting water.
One such hassle of the everyday drinking water
dilemma is the awkwardness of being the person
who has to replace the gallon-large bottles of water.
For those who actively avoid the gym, this task is
counterintuitive—you have to lift and break a sweat
to get a cold refreshing drink.
Luckily, the TOSOT Water Dispenser promises no
more lifting and no more back pain when loading
a water container. With a 304 stainless water tank,
the TOSOT Water Dispenser is a beautifully crafted
endorser of ease of use. The bottom loading water
dispenser is personally tailor fit for hassle-free wa-
10
ter container loading, giving even the most averse
to the weight rack an easier time with quenching
their thirst. All they really need to do is push the
large bottle in and you’re good to go!
Also, unlike run-of-the-mill water dispensers found
in most buildings, the TOSOT Water Dispenser
also offers three faucets that pour water with
different temperatures: hot, cold, and lukewarm.
This eliminates the second type of water-related
hassles, which is becoming a chemist as you
frantically mix hot and cold together to get your
perfect warm water mixture.
As a bonus, the TOSOT Water Dispensers also have
a certain sleekness to their design. While most
people imagine a white, plastic contraption
supporting a large, awkward cylinder of water, these
dispensers sport a cleaner, sleeker metallic look that
fits like a glove to most minimalistic and
modernized office and workspaces right now.
Common finishes include black, silver, and stainless
steel.
They are also the perfect size and are able to fit
smoothly anywhere. If you’re concerned about
where you would place the TOSOT Water
Dispenser, then know that both variants have their
rightful places anywhere. TOSOT’s bottom
loading water dispenser is sleek and flat, and
placing this water dispenser in any corner is like
fitting the last little piece in the last space of the
magnificent corporate puzzle. For a more
personalized setup, TOSOT’s table top water
dispenser is the perfect low key water dispenser
that does not infringe upon the overall theme of the
workplace.
Lastly, the TOSOT two Water Dispenser variants
dispense only clean, high quality water. It’s a
simple detail most would overlook, but different
water dispensers dispense water that “tastes”
different, if only a tad bit. The various tastes are
nuanced but ultimately speak a reality about the
water dispensers: that both the brand and the
model matter. With TOSOT’s two water dispensers,
water is purified, cooled to perfection, and comes
out looking like liquid diamond. The taste is subtle
and perfect for thirsty throats and hits the mark of
refreshing all those who need a healthy drink every
now and then.
So, whether you’re working in a humble start-up
or have cemented yourself in one of the biggest
agencies and companies in the Philippines, you and
everyone else requires the water of TOSOT’s two
types of water dispensers to kit the office pantry,
hallways, executive rooms, meeting rooms, and
other such places. Because as they say, staying
hydrated is good for the mind, body, and soul,
and with the TOSOT Water Dispensers just right
around the corner, you can constantly and easily
stay refreshed, hydrated, and focused as you burn
the midnight oil.

How to Find The Magic of Industry 4.0
I believe that when it comes to industry 4.0, the
true potential of your enterprise is not in what it
does, but what it can do. The potential of your team
is not what they can do today, but what they could
do in the future. The opportunity doesn’t lie in what
we know, it’s in what we don’t know yet.
The rate of change in the modern world is
staggering and it shows no sign of slowing down
– in fact, it is speeding up. Industry 4.0 is both an
example of this, and a result of it. Digital transformation
is at the heart of fundamental societal
changes that are emerging. In the region that I lead
for Rockwell Automation – specifically the Middle
East, Turkey and sub-Saharan Africa – there are
huge changes in progress.
Let’s start with the Middle East. It’s an area that is
no stranger to change, with great cities having risen
from the deserts – as well as great economies. And
the industrial change in the area now is one of rapid
diversification as whole new industries are
envisioned at national levels and realized at
break-neck speeds. Turkey, the ancient empire(s),
bridging Europe with Asia, bridging tradition with
future, bringing cultures together, is another
market with enormous potential and possibilities
for growth, always in a cycle of changes and
reinventing itself.
The continent where everything started for
humanity is set to reassert its position in our future.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the population is projected
to double by 2050. In fact, in the next 30 years the
world’s population is set to grow by an incredible
2bn – an increase of more than 25% - and a large
portion of that growth will be in sub-Saharan
Africa. This exponential population growth comes
at a time when the largest demographic for this
region will be of working age – a fact that points to
the potential for huge economic growth. Growth,
incidentally, that will be championed by the digital
generation.
The opportunities for industrial enterprises in these
regions are evident. There is no doubt that the
enterprises meeting the needs of the new markets
by leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies and
strategies are the ones that will succeed.
For most enterprises though, leveraging Industry
4.0 technologies requires strong change
management capacity. It requires learning new
skills rapidly, investing in the workforce, investing
in new approaches, systems and technologies. It
requires embracing disruptive technologies – and
often it will entail being a positive disruptor.
12
Finding the Magic
We’ve probably all seen the diagram of two circles
that don’t overlap, where one is labelled “your
comfort zone” and the other is labelled “where the
magic happens.” It’s one of those that you look at
and instantly recognize the truth of – and perhaps
with a tiny sinking feeling as you realize that
maybe, you should get out of your comfort zone a
little more.
The implicit message of that diagram is that
“magic” requires change. It is something I believe
very strongly, and I’m inspired by the words of Walt
Disney (who knew more than most about magic):
“If you can visualize it, if you can dream it, there’s
some way to do it.”
I can’t think of a better message for industrial
enterprise leaders in this era of change. We stand
with the makers, the doers, the builders; the
innovators. Our most successful customers in
adopting industry 4.0 approaches have taken the
step of visualizing. They have dreamed of what
could be done. By coupling this human ingenuity
and innovation with the power of machines and
Rockwell Automation solutions – we always find a
way to do it.
That’s where the magic of Industry 4.0 happens.
Take a look just outside your comfort zone, the
benefits are close at hand, but industry leaders must
embrace change to find them.
If you can visualize a bright future for your
enterprise, come and talk to us, and we’ll help you
connect the imagination and ingenuity of your
people with the intelligence of machines to make it
happen.

11 Must Have Products
In Your Jobsite
A complete job site is a safe job site. It’s how you
want things to be, especially for your hardworking
men. The work area, like any other office, should
have the complete tools to be efficient and
time-bound.
In other words, these are the necessary tools to have
if you want your construction job to be smooth
sailing.
Here are some of the products you should have at
hand in your construction site:
1. WELDING SOLUTIONS
The welding equipment is the first thing every job
site should take into account. And the best welding
solutions come from Lincoln Electric.
Their welding machines are extremely versatile
and capable of both small home projects and big
commercial demands. It works smoothly in
soldering various types of metals and has a long
lifespan. It is easy to use and has low electric
consumption.
2. THREADING & PIPE FABRICATION
SOLUTIONS
The right product applications of threading and

more time, money, and resources to redo.
When handling pipelines, it’s better to get it right
the first time around and trust in the reliable
threading and pipe fabrication solutions from
RIDGID ®. They have threading and pipe
fabrication machines that produce highquality
threads and long-lasting pipe dies.
14
3. DIAGNOSTICS, INSPECTION &

construction details.
4. DRAIN CLEANING
Drain cleaning is one of the lesser joys in erecting a
building. However, the strenuous task shouldn’t be
taken lightly because it’s the plumbing your
building will have for a long time. You wouldn’t
want your credibility ruined just because the drains
are clogged or dirty.
With RIDGID’s ® Drain cleaning machine,
cleaning drains are easy and long-lasting. Plus,
the new RIDGID® FlexShaft drain cleaning
machines are lightweight, so they’re easy to lug
around the Jobsite without requiring extra
manpower and effort.
5. POWERTOOLS

7. LIGHTING SOLUTIONS
No job site is complete without lighting solutions.
If not, it can pose hazardous threats for you and
your workers. We’re talking about men working
through the day and the dark of night, so the
lighting equipment you should have in your
arsenal has excellent quality.
Pelican® is now offering the 9490 Remote Area
Lighting System (RALS), which is a mobile lighting
solution you can whip out any time you want. It
has over 6000 lumens and 3 preset light levels. The
perfect lighting for construction in dark areas.
8. MATERIAL HANDLING SOLUTIONS
Another product every construction site need is
a storage space for their materials and tools.
Proper storage is vital in any job site, especially
when taking tools into account. You wouldn’t want
any important equipment to go amiss when you
need it the most.
For great storage solutions, trust in Storageworks,
Durham, Stanley, or Toh. These four brands manufacture
great material handling solutions. All of
them highly durable with a flexible price range for
any budget.
9. DOOR HARDWARE SOLUTIONS
Doors are essential parts of any infrastructure,
residential or commercial. So if you’re in a job site,

bigger issue for the future.
Get it right today with Dyson or Delta plumbing
solutions. They provide high-grade piping systems
and materials for both buildings and houses. They
last longer and offer the more cost-efficient prices
compared to other products in the market.
11. CLEANING SOLUTIONS
Cleaning time is the signal your job is near its end.
Finish your new infrastructure with the best
cleaning solutions out there from RIDGID ®,
Nilfisk, or Viper. They can scrub your job site
clean and ready for its occupants.
Especially Nilfisk ® which is an established leader
in cleaning technology. They offer a wide range of
industrial vacuums, sweepers, and scrubbers in the
market today.

Energy Solutions for
Increasing Demands
Energy management will be a top
priority in the commercial sector as digitization
and convergence of data are being
used to provide insights on how industries
are utilizing energy. On the other hand,
funding renewable projects will be more
accessible as open energy financing is hitting
the market, making way for potential
investors, lenders, and banks to become a
partner of companies and organizations

to adopt this technology. This is entirely
achievable as ‘blockchain’ allows people to
control their energy consumption through
an auditable encrypted ledger that can
record credit histories, energy consumption,
and allow trading of energy among
households.
More than being in the mainstream,
renewable energy such as solar and wind
are becoming a much-preferred source of
power. It has become a competitive asset of
nations all around the world. As markets
for renewable keep on growing, it will not
only balance the grid, lower prices and
improve performance but will also yield
opportunities for economic growth and
development.
Stricter Compliance to
Environmental standards
Political agreements were made in the
previous years among countries to ensure
that each nation is taking their part in
sustainability. Following that, stringent
mandatory schemes are being implemented.
In the UK, companies are made to comply
with Carbon Reduction Commitment
(CRC) and the minimum energy efficiency
standard (MEES) to ensure that they are
practicing and promoting energy efficiency.
Surely, other regions in the world will
follow these footprints and 2019 will be
a very challenging year for companies to
meet the requirements.

Electric vehicles are also in the running
of becoming mandatory in different countries.
Programs are being made to promote
EV and educate people about the advantages
of acquiring one. Although shifting
to EV will not be that fast, authorities are
enacting laws and publishing deadlines
to finally electrify public transportation
and eventually reduce the need for fuel.
One example is the action made by an
electric company in Hawaii that created an
‘electrification of transportation strategic
roadmap’ to boost the market for EV and
meet their goals of making transportation
a hundred-percent powered by renewable
fuel in the year 2025. This goes hand in
hand in with creating and modernizing
more green power sources.
On the other hand, more debates on
the use of alternative energy will uproar.
The government in countries are pushing
for coal, one of the major causes of global
warming, to still be part of the next generation
of energy solutions through clean-coal
technology. There is a strong opposition to
this narrative as many still doubt this isn’t
clean enough to be part of the solution.
Also, researchers are not eliminating the
possibility that the traditional grid might

Why Everyone
Needs To Support
The Shift To Clean
Energy
With the rise of demand for
renewable energy, the future
of industries such as oil and
gas becomes uncertain - although
it remains the same
for renewable energy as several
companies and organizations
face challenges in
pursuing production of clean
energy.
B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9
Things are looking up for
the renewable energy
sector as we enter a
brand new year. Several
nations have created changes
to use renewables to power
up homes, industries and
offices. For the bulk of 2017,
inspiring stories and updates
were reported - creating hope
to everyone as effects of global
warming pose as a threat to
every living being. As we start
the new year, let’s take a look
at what to expect in the energy
sector and why it matters to get
involved in this pressing matter.
This 2018, several companies
across the globe want to
focus on energy efficiency and
fossil fuel alternatives. With the
rise of demand for renewable
energy, the future of industries
such as oil and gas becomes
uncertain - although it remains
the same for renewable energy
as several companies and organizations
face challenges in
pursuing production of clean
energy.

B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9
Despite the uncertainty of
the policies for renewable energy
under the Trump administration,
demand for renewables
was shown to increase and
Asian countries have shown
interest in converting to renewables,
spearheading this
important movement. Several
Asian markets in India, Malaysia
and the Philippines started
to expand their businesses in
renewables, while China was
reported to have more than
40 percent of capacity growth
in global renewable energy in
2016. As several countries start
to expand on renewables, others
will soon follow to keep up
with the increasing demand
for renewable energy. Expect
global renewables capacity to
double in the next 10 years.
Why It Matters To Shift
To Renewables
Most countries have already
experienced the harmful impact
of global warming - from
the rise in sea level to frequent
occurrences of deadly storms
and drought. Due to the global
warming emissions brought
about by several industries in
the energy sector, these emissions
endanger our living conditions.
Shifting to renewable energy
offers us an opportunity to
save the environment and our
communities as renewable energy
resources produce little to
no global warming emissions.
According to the US Department
of Energy’s National Renewable
Energy Laboratory
(NREL), renewable energy can
aid in the reduction of emis-
42
sions in the electricity sector by
81 percent.
In relation to the decrease in
global warming emissions, the
health of the general public will
improve drastically. Pollution
produced by coal and natural
gas plants has lead to several
health problems in several
communities. These problems
include cancer, neurological
damage, heart attacks and other
serious problems.
Another reason why the public
needs to shift to renewable
energy is the resources’ ability
to replenish the supply of energy.
While the shift is still on
its early phase, studies have
shown that renewable energy
resources are capable of providing
power for several communities.
In line with this, renewable
energy may require
high capital cost but its low operating
cost make up for it. This
results to a more stable price
over time.
Lastly, a shift to renewable
energy gives more opportunities
for companies to hire more
people, thus, providing more
jobs. Compared to technologies
in the fossil fuel sector,
renewable energy technology
such as that of solar power requires
more labor, making it a
valuable factor in improving the
economy as well.
44
The Obstacles
It Faces
In The Market
While the benefits of renewable
energy make shifting more
inviting, several barriers have
made the shift difficult in the
energy sector. Setting politics
aside, organizations and companies
often consider these
barriers before pursuing their
shift to renewables.
Renewable energy may have
cheaper operating costs but it
requires a high capital investment
for it to be efficient and
competitive in the market. From
the installations of solar and
wind farms to high construction
costs, converting to renewable
energy may not be possible for
institutions and companies that
have limited budget. However,
recent developments in its
technology have made capital
costs cheaper compared to its
cost in the previous years (or
decades).
Another obstacle renewable
energy shift faces is its market
entry. With key players such as
coal, nuclear and natural gas
holding majority of the energy
market power, the new technology
offered in using renewable
energy may be considered
risky for most businesses.
Competing with big power
players with a mature, well-established
business model can
be disadvantageous for industries
promoting the usage of
renewable energy resources.
The only way for the renewable
energy industry to boom
is when governments and big
corporations support clean en-
49

ergy by investing on it.
Over the years, several records
have shown the progress
and developments in the renewable
energy sector. This good
news threatens several renewable
energy opponents, which
often results to spreading reliability
misconceptions about
renewable energy resources.
One argument presented by
these opponents is its reliability
to provide enough power for
nations. Contrary to these misconceptions,
resources such
as solar and wind are proven
to be highly reliable, safer and
more accessible compared to
coal, gas and nuclear.
Accessibility
On The Market
According to Colin Beaney,
Global Industry Director for Energy
& Utilities at IFS, renewables
will have a huge impact
on the energy and utility market
this 2018. With every progress
made in renewables industry,
a huge improvement will be
noticeable on its technology.
It becomes smarter and more
importantly, it becomes affordable
because of its lower construction,
operating and maintenance
costs.

What To Expect
Several nations have picked
up the idea of turning waste
into energy, as waste becomes
a major problem in managing
it. With more waste produced,
landfill areas are expected to
widen and it’s becoming a burden
to cities such as New Delhi.
Now, the Indian government
is starting to support plans of
building a waste-to-energy
plant that could help with their
waste management. China has
also put importance in converting
its waste to energy. An
example is China Everbright
International’s installation of
its eighteenth waste-to-energy
project in the Shandong Province.
companies will be able to improve
their energy production.
Storage technology will play a
crucial role in the progress of
the renewable energy sector in
the energy market.
Another trend this year would
be upgrading several aging
wind farms. Given that wind energy
is one of the earliest technologies
used in renewables,
several companies would like
to ensure the longevity of the
wind farms, along with improving
its efficiency and operational
costs. By adding energy
storage to its features, these

In a report published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, it
shared:
The global energy
storage market will
double six times between
2016 and 2030,
rising to a total of 125
gigawatts/305 gigawatt-hours.
This is a
similar trajectory to the
remarkable expansion
that the solar industry
went through from
2000 to 2015, in which
the share of photovoltaics
as a percentage
of total generation doubled
seven times. Eight
countries will lead the
market, with 70 percent
of capacity to be
installed in the U.S.,
China, Japan, India,
Germany, U.K., Australia
and South Korea.
Energy storage,
both utility-scale and
behind-the-meter, will
be a crucial source of
flexibility throughout
this period and will be
essential to integrating
increasing levels of renewable
energy.
56
Several reports have shown
that the global capacity of renewables
has increased over
the years. In BMI’s recent Global
Renewables Outlook, renewable
energy production is predicted
to double between 2016
and 2026. Now, it’s starting to
become a major force in the
energy market for big companies
as it made up more than
half of the world’s new power
generation capacity.
With a goal to achieve the
Paris Agreement goals of
keeping global warming below
2 degree Celsius, global insurers
will more likely help achieve
this goal by investing more on
renewable energy instead of
supporting coal-fired power
plants. While nothing can be
certain on today’s policies on
renewable energy, the future is
still bright given the recent developments
of its technology.
May it bring progress on our
slow but steady shift to clean
energy.

Cyber Attacks Pose Risks in
Renewable
Energy Industry
There is an urgent need for an effective cyber defense
to avoid catastrophic losses.
Although there are myriads of
advantages from
technological advancement,
there are also downsides that
need the attention of the
authorities. In this world
connected by technology,
even the renewable industry
is exposed to cyber attacks.
The number of entry points
for hackers of oil, gas, solar
power and other energyrelated
renewable industry has
deliberately increased. This
poses a huge threat since it
may result in the shutdown of
operations and even damage
to expensive equipment.

Major Cyber Attacks
In recent years, there are
already recorded cyber
attacks which is a wakeup call
for energy companies to invest
in cyber defense. This way it
can reduce, if not totally
eliminate, the entry of cyber
attackers for renewable
energy.
Hacking group “Dragonfly”
attacked Europe in 2013
which compromised their
industrial control systems.
The group infected the
renewable energy companies
with malware that is designed
to gather intelligence.
However, investigations reveal
that the said malware also
has the ability to take control
of physical systems, risking a
huge population of people.
Meanwhile, in 2015, an
electricity distribution grid in
Ukraine was affected by a
malware called “KillDisk”
and “BlackEnergy.” This
sophisticated malware
resulted in the shutdown of
electricity affecting about
225,000 consumers. Due to
the severe software damage,
the attack has caused, it took
months before the electricity
grid was fully restored.
Solar energy is also not
secure. This needs attention
since there is a large
number of solar energy utilization
in the US alone. There is
an increase in the usage of
solar energy since prices
are low even for its inverters,
trackers, and modules.
While the renewable energy
sector is not yet secured, attacks
may still increase
in frequency and
destructiveness. Hence, it is
imperative to build up their
defenses before an attack
could result in catastrophic
losses.

Steps Toward Cyber Security
Cybersecurity for
distributed energy
resources (DER) is
significant to avoid
more detrimental attacks. What
could be done to increase
security and protect renewable
energy from hackers?
Energy infrastructure
operators should undergo
training and should be
fully aware of the risks. Proper
training on how to deal with
cyber attacks could help
lessen the impact of malware
which may result in massive
physical damage.
Private energy companies
can also work hand-in-hand
with the government to guard
their institution from hacks. A
public-private partnership with
established trust can share
confidential cyber attack
information that can help
create strategic plans on how
to avert hackers.
Inverter manufacturers should
fend off from publishing
default passwords in manuals
since this will allow unsecured
access not only to sensitive
data but also to control
parameters. The use of
low-cost and inferior
networking equipment should
also be avoided since these
have weak security and may
open the door to data
encryption.
Best practices should be
done in order to avoid security
threats. Passwords should not
be published or shared.
System owners should
formulate a unique password
immediately after installation.
Data transmitted by inverters
and other equipment should
be encrypted for added
security.
In California, there is an
increased focus on
cybersecurity. The DER
Cybersecurity Workgroup is
formed whose primary goal is
to create a collection of best
practices which can then be
used to develop national
and international DER
cybersecurity standards.
Since there are grid support
functions in California’s Rule
21, a Smart Inverter Working
Group was also created to
ensure that inverter
manufacturers can meet cyber
defense requirements and grid
support functions.

This way, security can be

All they have to do is wear a
special goggle to feel that they
are near a wind turbine and
perform repairs by following
manuals and using real tools.
Wind turbines are continuously
getting bigger in size as
developments are introduced.
They are now known to be the
largest moving structure made
by man. Because of its size,
it will be difficult for people to
fully understand them unless
they encounter wind turbines
up close, but thanks to VR
personal contact is no longer
mandatory. Still, the
experience will let you feel the
impact of a wind turbine so it
will be easier to understand it.

that accessibility is one of the
challenges that the offshore
wind industry turbines face.
He explained that there are

MHI Vestas has conference

“When we need to show
people what the turbines look
like and how they operate, VR
is undoubtedly the best way.
Thousands of people have
experienced this film over the
past few years, and the
feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive,”
Morris said.
Dutch wind energy
consultancy company Bosch

because they have had their
fair share of experiences
wherein shareholders are
against the use of wind
turbines because they are
scared of it. The use of VR
allows people to experience
the big structures, understand
the impact they hold on the
landscape, and hear the noise
they will actually produce. By
taking away the fears they
have because of what they

make their perception turn into

Sunsmart power couple’s inspirational story
It’s no surprise that the planet
has seen better days. The
introduction of power and
electricity, while revolutionary
for holistic development in
various areas, has also
gradually infringed upon the
quality of Earth itself. The
many power supplies, while
integral in everyday human
life, is also unsustainable to
say the least. The amount of
these generators would be
acceptable, if many people
could afford to have light and
power surge through their
homes. The fact of the matter
is actually the opposite. Many
communities around the globe
are still very much in the literal
and figurative dark, especially
in the Philippines.
Needless to say, the
Philippines is still a third-world
country. While it is quite
developed in the modern
sense of the world, there exists
a large gap between
socio-economic classes A
and B, and those in the CDE
group. That said, the
Philippines is riddled with

B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9
It has been quite some time
now ever since humans
opened their doors to the
Earth-friendly concept of
renewable energy. With the
disturbing depletion of the
world’s supply of fossil fuels,
opting to use the sun, the
wind, the geothermal, and
other renewable energies
has been one of technology’s
greatest breakthroughs. Little
by little, more households and
corporations are starting to
convert to these clean energy
sources. And with the rise of
innovations in renewable
energy comes the rise of
mobile applications that are
beneficial to both the
customers and the energy
companies. Here are six of the
most helpful apps you ought to
install in your mobile devices.
1. Global Atlas Pocket
Considered as the “only global
tool of its kind”, this app
developed by the International
Renewable Energy Agency
(IRENA) has been helping
hundreds and thousands of
renewable energy investors
ever since its launch in 2015.
Basically, what Global Atlas
Pocket does is providing a
comprehensive calculation of
possible investment
opportunities in solar,
geothermal, wind, bioenergy,
hydropower, and ocean
energy in a certain location.
Extracting data from 1,000
maps provided by 50 data
centers in no less than 60
world governments, the app
provides users with the best
hotspots for particular kinds
of renewable energy and how
viable that location is in
producing said energy source.
With the massive information
this app has to offer, more
investors are encouraged to
venture into the renewable
energy business, making the
world’s energy supply greater
and more Earth-friendly.

2. Windspire Me
Solely dedicated to Windspire
wind turbines, Winspire Me
can measure the wind speeds
produced by these turbines
with just one tap on your
smartphones. Simply hold your
mobiles up in the air with the
microphone facing the wind,
and let the app do its magic.
It even gives you the option to
post the wind speed on a map
and share it with everybody.
Aside from wind speed, the
app also gives users an
estimated of the power
production of the turbines and
the amount of carbon
dioxide these can save.
Although Windspire Me is just
a creative tool for Windspire,
it makes the public generally
aware of how wind energy can
greatly impact the
environment.

3. Solar Checklist
As obvious as its name, Solar
Checklist is a checklist for
solar panel installers and
businesses to make sure their
job is documented properly
and done according to
standards. The app features
a detailed procedure to solar
panel installation, updated
technical help, integrated
barcode scanner, and options
to link photos. Solar Checklist
can greatly help businesses
to monitor the job done and
make sure everything is of the
highest quality. Better energy
production comes from
installations that meet, if not
exceed, expected standards.

4. Project Sunroof
Project Sunroof is a nifty app
for homeowners that
encourages them to install
solar panels on their roofs.
This can help them be aware
of the amount of solar power
they can produce if they would
opt to convert to solar energy.
Aside from that, the app
calculates how much they can
cut off from their electricity bill
with this simple life-changing
decision. Just like that! With its
advanced 3D modeling
feature, it is able to compute
how many solar panels your
roof can accommodate, the
sun’s position throughout the
year and provide detailed
considerations on the cloud
cover and temperature in the
specific neighborhood.
Having a current analyzing
power of about 43 million
rooftops, thousands of
possible customers are just a
few clicks away from getting
their own rooftops evaluated
for solar suitability.

specific address and the app
will give you an installation
cost estimate, how long (in
years) will you earn back this
cost, how much carbon offset
can be produced with this
installation, and some details
on the ideal panel tilt and the
number of panels a roof can
accommodate. It has greatly
expanded its services both in
Chile and in the US, analyzing
a handful of cities and major
metro areas.

With an iPhone or iPad, you
can now locate any windfarm
nearby or even across the
globe. It provides real-time
information on the wind power
any wind turbine generates
and the model and number of
turbines in the wind farm. Each
wind farm in the app varies in
color according to their sizes.
One neat detail this app offers
is an estimate of a specific

Because tomorrow matters
As drawn in previous points,
renewable energies would not
be able to meet the
increasing demand. The total
world energy demand is about
400 quadrillion British Thermal
Units (BTUs) annually.
One ‘BTU’ is about the
energy and heat generated by
a match. Oil, coal and natural
gas supply about 350
quadrillion BTUs. Oil provides
most of this, around 41
percent of the world’s total
energy supplies. Coal
provides 24 percent and
natural gas provides the
remaining 22 percent.

Energy Sources’ Impact to
Existence
All energy sources have some
impact on our environment.
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil,
and natural gas is more
harmful than renewable
energy sources by most
processes, including air and
water pollution, damage to
public health, wildlife and
habitat loss. However,
renewable sources such as
wind, solar, geothermal,
biomass, and hydropower also
have environmental impacts,
some of which are significant.
A notable number of
countries around the world
have pledged to go
renewable in the next 10-20
years. On the other hand,
countries notorious for their
enormous amounts of carbon
emissions have also pledged
to severely cut down their
greenhouse emission rate.
This has resulted in an
accelerated focus on
constructing renewable
energy plants. The objective
of these pledges is to reduce
142
C O V E R S T O R Y
the harmful effects of carbon
emissions on the planet.
According to International
Renewable Energy Agency
(IRENA), the total renewable
power sector net additions
recorded in 2017 reached
new highs. Data from a report
published by IRENA shows
that hydro energy led the
global installed capacity by
301.8 GW, followed by wind at
115.4 GW, solar energy at 38.2
GW, bioenergy at 13.5 GW
and geothermal at 3.5 GW.
The exact type and intensity of
environmental impacts varies
depending on the specific
technology used, the
geographic location and a
number of other factors.

Issues Linked
with Energy
Sources
Understanding the current and
potential environmental issues
associated with each
renewable energy source, we
can yield steps to effectively
avoid or minimize these
impacts as they become a
larger portion of our electric
supply.
Harnessing power from the
wind is one of the cleanest
and most sustainable ways
to generate electricity as it
produces no toxic pollution
or global warming emissions.
Wind is also abundant,
inexhaustible and affordable
which makes it a viable and
large-scale alternative to fossil
fuels. Despite its vast
potential, there are a variety of
environmental impacts
associated with wind power
generation that should be
recognized and mitigated. The
fact that oil is a finite material
is not a problem.
152
R E N E W A B L E G R E E N L E A D E R S
Every material is finite. Life is
all about taking the
theoretically finite but
practically limitless materials
in nature and creatively turning
them into useful resources.
Fossil Fuels are originally
formed from plants and
animals that lived hundreds
of millions of years ago and
became buried deep beneath
the Earth’s surface. These
then collectively transformed
into the combustible materials
that we use today for fuel.
The earliest known fossil fuel
deposits are from about 500
million years ago, when most
of the major groups of animals
first appeared on Earth. The
later fossil fuels, such as peat
or lignite coal began forming
from about five million years
ago.

Innovative solutions for wind turbines
Developing the future.
Renewable energy usage is
soaring quickly on a global
scale, slowly combating the
adverse effects of
unsustainable energy and
buttressing against the speedy
rise of climate change. Wind,
solar energy, hydropower,
geothermal, and biomass are
the most common types of
naturally-replenishing,
theoretically infinite sources
of renewable energy.
While this steadily growing
trend is grounds for hope for
the planet, the population
working in renewable
energy faces a number of perils
unique to this ever-growing
industry. Compared to urban
offices, the novelty of working
in renewable resources may
exacerbate these hazards.
One of the more perilous fields
under renewable resources is
wind. Installed all across the
nation, wind turbines are as
intimidating as they are lofty,
and green jobbers working in
wind ought to exercise
extreme caution when atop
these mills.
Labelled as a high-risk job for
most, the majority of fatalities
in this field revolve around pre-
156
157
B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9
carious falls, electrical burns,
and crushing injuries, among
other causes by the
Occupational Safety and
Health Administration. These
incidents have befallen
linemen, electricians, and
countless others.
Global Wind Organization
(GWO) chairman Claus Rose
noted that electrical incidents
happen when handling high to
low-voltage equipment,
resulting in electrocution and
explosions.
Rose also shed light upon
things that “people don’t
realize are problems,” until
it’s too late, such as
carrying heavy equipment
in unfavorable locations that
are cramped and congested.
Stumbling, tripping, and
colliding into various other
equipment is not uncommon
for one working in wine. During
turbine installation, most
especially, one must always be
vigilant of their surroundings
and take rests when
necessary, avoiding fatigue as
much as possible. The amount
158
R E N E W A B L E G R E E N L E A D E R S
of lifting large pieces of
equipment alone differentiates
wind from oil and gas, and
other energy and resource
industries.
Being careless when handling
and lifting equipment paves
multiple ways for related
injuries. Inexperienced
workers with poor levels of
concentration and proper
handling suffer from physical
traumas that, when ignored,
could worsen at an
unprecedented rate.
In contrast, height, which is
perceived as a major risk
factor by the public, is very
much controlled. “Sometimes
there is an assumption that
just because it is very high up
in the air it must, by default,
be a major risk area. It isn’t,
because we have a very good
idea of how to control it, the
safety systems involved are
quite well developed, and we
have well-equipped turbines.”
Rose says.
It should then come as no
surprise that safety experts are
already gearing up to find the
best solutions for crisis
mitigation in these work sites.
After all, the safety of
renewable resource
workers should always be the
top priority. It is, according to
Andy Holt, the Head of Global
Projects and Services at GE
Renewable Energy, a concern
shared amongst all green
jobbers in renewable
resources. Protecting the
159
160
professionals in the industry is
an interest shared amongst all
players within the arena.
Rose states that better
safety protocols are being
researched and implemented
by original equipment
manufacturers worldwide.
Safety,
protection, and accountability
are becoming a harder
cornerstone for the OEM’s
commercial strategies and
communication plans, all the
while following through with
their promise to improve upon
their own safety measures.
With these plans to prevent
incidents and crises currently
at play, professionals in the
renewable energy resource will
finally have their second wind.
Proliferating this culture of
security in the industry is
founded on sharpness of mind
and sound mentality. While
working in the renewable
resource industry is noble in
and of itself, Holt is reminding
all renewable resource recruits
to prioritize their own physical
and mental well-beings before
the planet’s, because there will
always be an Earth to be taken
care of.
Part of creating this culture of
safety is, surprisingly, the
reduction of house and work
site rules. According to Rose,
an overabundance in house
rules is indicative of poor
management from the
higher-ups and the workers
must instead focus on
improving individual and
collective risk awareness.
Green jobbers must
pre-emptively take steps to

clear paths, check up on risk
factors, minimize potential
threats, and ensure a safe
environment before the actual
work begins. Rules and
regulations will still be
present in extremely
precarious positions and
locations in the industry.
As wind farms move further
and further away from
populaces and urban

The renewable energy sector
has failed to acknowledge the
advantages that women can
bring to the industry. Because
of that, there is a lack of
diversity in renewable
energy companies. Women
still belong to the minority
groups and their voices are
seldom heard as men continue
to dominate over them.
The International Renewable
Energy Agency reports that
the global renewable
energy employment
(excluding large-scale
hydropower) has reached 8.3
million in 2016. But despite
this increase, women repre-
169

sentation is still small. In
countries under the
Organisation for Economic
Co-operation and
Development (OECD), only 20
percent of the employees are
females who work in sales and
administration, engineering,
and technical departments.
The poor gender diversity in
the industry results in a slow
transition and it hinders new
ideas that women could
contribute. Compared to other
industries, the energy sector is
lagging in terms of
diversity which affects the way
the business runs. Because
of this, groups like Women in
Renewable Energy (WiRE) are
looking for ways to advance
the role and recognition of
women in the sector. This will
help improve the industry as
females navigate change with
new technologies, innovations,
and ideas.
170

Does Diversity
Really Matter?
The first step that companies
need to take is to assess how
they can truly benefit from
women employees. Once
more females are added to
the team, it can create a more
diverse workplace. Apart from
women, minority ethnic groups
including Asians and black
people should be given roles
contributing to the sector’s
diversity. Is this really
necessary?
Working with a group
comprised of like-minded
individuals will result into
homogenous thinking. This
means that there will be a
limited perspective which
hinders the creation of fresh
ideas. Hence, in order for a
group to be effective, there
should be brainstorming with
different points of view from
people with different
experiences and backgrounds
based on their gender, age,
and culture.
Having a good balance
between the number of male
and female workers will help
create a bigger picture when
dealing with issues and other
business-related matters. For
instance, males and females
has varying approach to risks.
Females are more careful and
cautious. With this, their inputs
about how to manage health
and safety in construction sites
would be beneficial.
Surrounding the industry with
different people or with a
diverse group will welcome
more ideas and perspectives,
making industry leaders more
cognizant and receptive to
other viewpoints.
171
172
Why We Need More
Women in the
Energy Sector
The renewable energy sector
is still relatively new which
explains why there is a
current lack of diversity. This
also mean that it could open
its doors to more female
engineers since it still needs
more time to fully develop.
Currently, there is an
increasing global demand for
energy but it is struggling due
to skills shortages.
However, this dilemma can be
resolved if more women could
be part of the business.
Women can close the skills
gap which will help
companies keep pace with
the demands of the world. The
skills of females are different
from men as they have a slight
edge when it comes to project
management, negotiation, and
diplomacy. They also have the
knowledge that men possess
from technical know-hows like
installing solar panels to
subject theories like how a
wind turbine works.
But the greatest advantage
of hiring women is their
sympathetic nature towards
the state of the environment
and climate change. This
means that they can
incorporate new ideas and
innovations that can help
the industry tackle climate
change. Since females are
more concerned of this
aspect, their strong
pro-climate beliefs and
opinions can be prominent
voices to call for greater
action.

175

The change can start in STEM
education in students.
Ambassadors and role models
can also encourage students
to work on this field. Role
models can also help increase
female visibility in the industry.
This way, it would be easier
to gain trust not just from the
society but from the male
leaders.
Gender diversity in companies
can produce better
innovation. It is also easier to
tackle the best approaches in
policy based on a variety of
perspectives. Since women
lend a unique perspective on
effective solutions for
sustainability, the birth of new
ideas and programs in the
sector can lead to its progress.
Now that we realize the value
of diversity and the availability
of a range of skills, it is time to
make a change. The
renewable energy industry
needs to open more
opportunities for women.

Why Incorporate IoT in
Renewable Energy
The Internet of Things poses
great potential in the smooth
integration of renewable
energy sources in two-way
power systems. Through IoT,
wind, solar, and other sources
of renewable energy can be
easily connected to on-site
energy sources like batteries
or electric vehicle charging.
On top of all of that, IoT is the
first step to creating a more
distributed, cleaner, and intelligent
electric grid. IoT
establishes a connection
to the Energy Cloud, which
basically houses a networked
ecosystem of two-way power
sources. The future of IoT in
the renewable energy
business is becoming clearer
by the year, and stakeholders
and companies are expected
to join in the revolution.

Empowering Innovations
Benefits of IoT
With the increasing usage
of mobile apps and
smartphones, IoT is becoming
more of a trend now more than
ever. This technology is
catering to the consumer
electronics market, along with
the B2B industry. By 2020,
the value of the Internet of
Things is expected to reach
an all-time high of $2000 B
compared to its $300 B value
today.
The most common usage
of the technology is in
connecting LED lamps, though
more emerging systems in
the energy services are now
experimenting with the use of
IoT in their operations. This
is mainly due to the fact that
the total cost of IoT hardware
and software is relatively
lesser when compared to the
massive insights and analytic
opportunities brought by the
technology.
182

Increases
Comfort
Asides from improved
efficiency and performance,
what drives people to use IoT
is its increased comfort and
convenience. End-users will
now be allowed to measure
and check their installation, as
well as to adopt any change
according to the current
market requirement.
This will also mean a huge
step for the energy efficiency
system integrators as they
will be able to determine their
customer requirements for
better integration. IoT poses
as a major player in low-cost
communication solutions,
integrating embedded
systems to the internet. As a
result, more players are
entering the marketplace at a
faster rate.
The Renewable Industry with
IoT Today
On a national/global scale
The renewable energy industry
has attracted countries across
the globe to invest in the
technology. China ranks in the
number one place, producing
60% total annual solar cells.
The United States of America,
along with India, ranks on the
second and third place with
notable volumes of renewable
products as well. On the other
hand, in Europe, Denmark is
expected to use renewable
sources to power 70% of its
energy consumption by 2022.
Other parts of the globe
are also studying and
implementing the technology
one step at a time.
IoT enters the equation by
providing billions of terabytes
of data retrieved from the
various sensors connected to
the network. This massive
collection of data can be
useful in a broad array of
applications, from refining
energy consumption plans to
improving decision-making
through data insights.
183
184
On the industry
level
Numerous industries and
enterprises are adopting IoT
technologies to promote the
clean energy revolution and
simultaneously decrease the
negative impact of old-school
sources on the environment.
Smart cities are now enabling
better traffic light control to
manage the roads more
efficiently and eventually
reduce air population and fuel
consumption.
In the agricultural sector, soil
sensors are deployed in the
fields to sprinkle water where
and when it is needed
automatically. This maximizes
the use of water as farmers
need not irrigate the fields too
often.
The same principle applies
to the renewable energy
industry as well. Next-gen IoT,
equipped with better Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and machine
learning algorithms, can
produce predictive models to
simplify troubleshooting and
automate maintenance. Using
IoT with blockchains can also
introduce a more advanced
way of payments.

On the consumer level
The benefits of IoT paired with
renewable energy is best felt
at the granular level. Endusers
get a more flexible
control of their household
appliances and can control
everything with just a few
clicks on their mobile apps.
This will eventually
reduce their overall power
consumption since they
are more aware of their
monthly utility bills. They can
also customize their usage
according to the data gathered
by the sensors in their
home and moving forward,
make more sensible decisions
regarding energy
consumption.

Renewable energy has been a
significant research area since
the early 2000s. The
development of this technology
has proven to contribute
significantly to alleviating
poverty, expanding rural
development, and fuelling
industrial production and
transportation. But while
researchers are producing
convincing benefits of renewable
energy, there are still few people
switching to technology, most
notably in the developing
countries.
Fossil fuels remain the
primary source of energy across
the globe. Around forty percent
of the electricity generated on
a global level is from coal,
making it a significant contributor
to the energy supply across the
world. But we are all well aware
that such use is contributing
significantly to global warming.
To eliminate this, scientists and
researchers are making
sustainable energy more
accessible to the world.
However, there are still barriers
and limitations that need to be
overcome.
In Africa, although there are
numerous sources of renewable
energy available, the
development of such technology
is particularly slow, mainly
because of inadequate funds,
lack of policies, and
technological advancement
limitations. This opens up a
whole new world of possible
solutions to end these limitations
and barriers, some of which are
highlighted below.
193
B E S T S T O R I E S O F 2 0 1 9
Barriers Hindering the Use of Renewable Energy Sources
Political and Regulatory
Barriers
With renewable energy being
a policy-driven market, it may
be challenging to spread the
technology if there are
lacking policies and
regulations overseeing this
development. Because of the
nature of the renewable
energy structures, the need for
policies and legal procedures
is on demand. These legalities
are essential in increasing the
interest of investors.
Creating regulatory measures,
standards, and codes could
also minimize technological
and regulatory risks of
investments in these projects,
thus enhancing the adoption
of renewable energy
technologies into the country.
However, most countries lack
these policies, mainly because
their renewable energy
technologies are still in the
making. The implementation of
a standard renewable energy
policy is also hindered by the
unsuitable application in every
region.
While some countries do have
regulations and policies
already drafted, they are still
unimplemented due to being
immature. Because of this
reason alone, private sector
participation is greatly
affected. Without well-defined
policies, no private investors
want to participate in the
funding of this infrastructures.
Financial and Economic
Barriers
The adoption of renewable
energy technologies
dramatically depends on the
economic status, initial capital,
and transaction costs of the
adopting country. Because
the initial capital is expectedly
high compared to the current
energy sources in use today,
the price alone discourages
the use of the technology.
Many producers prefer low
initial investment costs, and
seeing the amount of money
194
R E N E W A B L E G R E E N L E A D E R S
they had to release, the high
cost of investment is mostly
affecting the adoption of
renewable energy technology.
There are also a lot of
transaction costs involved in
the generation of renewable
energy. This meant the total
production cost is expected
high. Compared to
conventional fossil fuel plants,
renewable energy projects
require a complex planning
and procurement process,
something that affects the
total cost and time frame of
the project. This, in turn,
creates the image that
renewable energy sources are
expensive and unaffordable,
both to the consumers and the
producers.
Steps on Breaking the
Barriers Global Learning
The future of renewable
energy technologies lies
substantially in spreading
awareness and global
learning, most notably in
developing countries and
emerging economies.
Building technological
capabilities through learning
are considered a significant
factor in deploying renewable
energy sources, which in turn
can result in reduced costs,
improved performance, and
mitigation of climate change.
The technological capabilities,
which includes technical
knowledge and experience,
is essential in building local
capacity for poverty reduction,

production, and
socio-economic development.
However, technological
capabilities do not only
include technical information
but also utilizes skills and
well-developed routines as
well.
Diffusion of Policy and
Technology
Diffusion mainly involves the
communication of policy,
technology, and innovations
throughout the international
system. Through the diffusion
of policy and technology, the
flow of information is
sustained, and the adoption
of renewable energy sources
is highly possible. Although
the spreading of this
information to developing
countries may seem like a
difficult task to accomplish,
there must be diffusion
mechanisms ready to respond
to the developing countries’
needs and challenges,
particularly in spreading
feasible and socially
acceptable renewable energy
sources.
