Our stories, our people, our Māngere
Kōrero paki ō tatou, Tāngata ō tatou, Ngā Hau Māngere ō tatou
first female hawk INTO KIWI ferns
275 Times contributor
Ernestina Maro
recently sat down for
a chat with Mangere's
newest league star.
Here's her story:
The humble and talented Annetta
Nuuausala has been in the headlines
lately with her inclusion in New
Zealand Womens’ Rugby League
team, the Kiwi Ferns – making her
the first from the Mangere East
Hawks to achieve this. The Samoan
21-year-old is the youngest of
six and she says church is a big
reason she’s been able to make
this journey. Annetta is a shining
example for many other female
athletes and has particularly pushed
boundaries for many Pacific females
to get into Rugby League. Annetta
was inspired by her sports-mad
family to give league a go and
because netball wasn’t providing
enough excitement. She says being
brought up in a household where
LEAGUE STAR: Annetta breaks new ground for
Mangere East Hawks.
sport has been played at an elite
level by her older brother Frank-
Paul Nuuausala – who currently
plays in the NRL for the Canberra
Raiders and has won a premiership
with the Sydney Roosters – has also
driven her to aim for a higher level
with the goal of becoming a rugby
league star in her own right. In her
short career one major highlight
has been representing New Zealand
at the recent NRL Nines event at
Eden Park and playing in front of a
packed house of screaming fans.
She says none of this would have
been possible without her family
and friends, but particularly her
brother John, Rusty Matua from
the Auckland Vulcans and Askhan.
And her message for any Pacific
women considering giving league a
crack: “Put yourself out there and
go hard!”
AAAP set to make big impact
READY TO IMPACT: Alastair Russell ( left) and two fellow AAAP members.
Think you’re getting ripped off?
If so, make sure you’re outside the
Pukapuka Hall on April 5,6, and 7 as
Auckland Action Against Poverty is
coming to Mangere. The direct action,
advocacy and education group will be
running its fourth Impact event aimed
at ensuring people on low incomes
are getting their full entitlements
from Work and Income. AAAP
spokesperson Alastair Russell says
the last event was a huge success,
with over 500 people helped and
more than $100,000 in grants and
entitlements received by attendees of
the event.
“The purpose of the event is to firstly
to help as many people as possible
in Mangere. These events have
steadily grown. We have helped stop
deductions, get a range of advances
for people sleeping on the floor and
ensuring many, many people get
housing or retain housing.”
AAAP started in 2010 and have
been involved in running similar
events across Auckland as well as
participating in protests and nonviolent
direct action. Alastair says
AAAP’s Impact events are part of a
wider campaign aimed at curbing the
Government’s welform reforms.
“Our work involves opposing and
exposing the Government’s welfare
reforms and the agenda to have an
undeclared war on the poor and
show the proof of the ever-widening
gap between the rich and poor. What
these events do is provide concrete
proof of the realities of poverty.”
If you’d like to attend the event
be at the Pukapuka Hall, Canning
Crescent, Mangere from 9am –
5pm, April 5,6,7. Alternatively,
if you’d like to volunteer at this
event go to www.aaap.org.nz
Local beatmakers do battle in the 275
Local beatmakers from across the city headed to the Mangere Arts Centre on February 27 to showcase their talents and
dope beats. Artists went head to head in a battle for cash, audio equipment, streetwear and the new 'Rep Your Beats'
trophy. Peter Pedro took out the event and special thanks goes to the judges Anonymouz, Dlove, and HazBeats who
made sure that the winner earned their spot. The inaugural event was hosted by NZ's No.1 Hip Hop station - based in
Mangere - Rep FM and the Hip Hop website Ayebro and it's set to be an annual feature so look out for it next year.
Little church makes big sacrifice for Lent
3
Mangere Baptist Church may be
small but that hasn’t stopped it
from taking on the big challenge
of waste minimisation during the
Christian season of Lent.
Traditionally Lent is a time when
Christians around the world go
without something significant to help
them remember Jesus – and so this
year the church's Pastor John Catmur
has decided to focus their efforts on
giving up some of the rubbish they
produce over this time. Ps John says
this is great way to put their faith into
action.
“I see taking care of God’s creation as
a way to worship God.”
The church kicked off the Lent period
with a waste reduction workshop,
facilitated by ME Family Service’s
Talking Rubbish team. The members
learned of some of the issues our
planet is facing. Many in the group
were already doing things at home
and in the community to reduce
their waste and the workshop was
an opportunity to share ideas and
Māngere goes viral
BIG CLEAN UP: Ps John (far right) with his church members picking and sorting rubbish.
learn from each other. Thanks to
some resources supplied by Talking
Rubbish, and some creative input by
Ps John, the church has now got it's
own waste station. Separated bins
and labelling are making it much
easier for church users to put their
waste in the right bin. Ps John says
his little church has the potential to
speak loudly to the wider Auckland
community through this initiative.
If other pastors in the Mangere/
Otahuhu area would like info on
reducing waste please contact
Have you seen the 24hrs South campaign
video yet? (see link above)
If not, you're in a minority as over 340,000 have watched
what a fun place Mangere in particular can be. The video
shows a couple doing a range of activities in Mangere,
around Auckland airport, and at Rainbow’s End in
Manukau. The Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board funded
the production as part of its local economic development
programme. Local Board member Christine O’Brien says
the video has gone viral: "Between 11th December and
18th January it reached 346,508 people on Facebook with
568 shares and over two thousand likes."
