Dear Friends,

As we look back on a very challenging year, I am proud to present Portland Stage’s

2019-20 Annual Report – an overview of our aspirations and accomplishments, none

of which would have been possible without your support.

In the past year, Portland Stage produced the highest grossing play in our

organization’s 46-year history, Almost, Maine by beloved native Mainer, John Cariani.

We continued our nationally renowned Education Programs despite school closures

in the spring, bringing them online and reaching thousands of households across

New England and beyond. We maintained our commitment to fostering New Work by

emerging theater artists during the 31st Annual and very first ever Virtual Little Festival

of the Unexpected, expanding our reach by offering online readings.

As we celebrated Maine’s Bicentennial, we were faced with a global pandemic no one

could have seen coming, yet we were able to close out the year in the black thanks

to the tremendous efforts of our staff and artists and the humbling support of our

devoted community.

Thank you for your help weathering the storm, and here’s to a brighter new year.

MAINSTAGE

Portland Stage creates our handcrafted productions from the ground up by combining the best local

talent with professional artists from across the nation. Our Mainstage is the core of who we are and

what we do. During the 2019-20 season, we received Mainstage show support from our longstanding

corporate partners, Wright-Ryan, Migis Hotel Group, and L.L. Bean, we presented 145 Mainstage shows,

and although the last two productions of our season were cancelled due to the pandemic, we

continued expanding the reach of our programming through digital platforms.

Three of our 2019-20

Mainstage productions focused

on subject matter directly tied to our

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts:

Ain’t Misbehavin’ by Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller,

which painted a vivid picture of the Harlem

Renaissance through song; The Clean House

by Sarah Ruhl, which addressed immigration

and cross-cultural understanding; and

Native Gardens by Karen Zacarias,

which explored the expectations of

neighbors navigating diversity.

Almost, Maine brought

in over $75,000 more

than our budgeted goal and

was generously supported by a

grant from the Maine Office of

Tourism, which allowed us to

promote the show in rural

areas of the state.

The 2019-20 season was Portland Stage’s

46th consecutive year of Mainstage

programming, and we kicked off Maine’s

Bicentennial with our highest grossing

production in the organization’s

history: Almost, Maine by John Cariani.

We brought our

Mainstage to life, quite

literally, during our production of

Native Gardens with a set designed

by Anita Stewart that included living

plants and flowers! Native Gardens

also marked our first foray into bringing

our Mainstage shows online, and ticket

holders were able to experience the

production virtually in spite of our

mid-production closure due to

the pandemic.

NEW WORK

Portland Stage promotes and celebrates the creation of new plays in New England. We establish an

environment that supports our region’s playwrights, builds bridges between our theater and local writers,

and raises awareness of our art form and the work being created in New England with our Studio Series

workshops and readings, the Clauder Playwriting Competition, and the Little Festival of the Unexpected.

Additionally, we host the annual From Away festival in collaboration with the International Writing

Program at the University of Iowa, where we bring writers from across the globe to Portland to share

their work with our community.

We held multiple

readings of local

playwright Callie Kimball’s

Perseverance, a new play timed

to coincide with the Women’s

Suffrage Centennial, including

a reading during the “Suffrage

Tea” hosted by Governor

Janet T. Mills on Women’s

Equality Day.

Our 2019-20

Mainstage season

included the World

Premiere of Clauder

Competition winner

Brendan Pelsue’s

Read To Me.

We hosted the 23rd Annual

From Away international

writers festival, featuring the

work of playwright, director, and

actor Gabriela Román Fuentes

(Mexico), TV and fiction writer Samuel

Menghesteab (Eritrea), and theater

director and writer Chan Ping

Chiu (Hong Kong).

Our first ever Virtual Little Festival

of the Unexpected was broadcast on

Facebook Live and included readings

of Perseverance, What Comes Next by

Jonathan Spector, and Mariana’s Trench

by Scott C. Sickles which was viewed

over 1,000 times!

EDUCATION

Education is central to the mission of Portland

Stage, and we offer vital theater arts education for

grades pre-K through high school through our

In-Theater and In-School programming. All classes

and workshops are taught by professionally

trained Teaching Artists and focus on literacy,

cultural awareness, imaginative problem-solving,

collaborative play, and creative thinking.

In September 2019, we celebrated the 10th

Anniversary of our Theater for Kids

storefront space and paid tribute to the

amazing Susie Konkel for her continued

leadership support of our Education

Programs. The celebration featured

special student performances,

raffle items, and refreshments.

During the pandemic and with our community

staying safe at home, our Education team pivoted

to online programming and created a variety of

virtual education resources to continue engaging

young people, families, teachers, and students.

Resources included Facebook live-streaming

of Play Me a Story Dramatic Readings,

Tutorial Videos, Games to Play at

Home, Follow-Along Videos, and

other interactive activities.

During our Fall

Afterschool Class, a group

of 4th-6th graders wrote an

original picture book titled

Pugdog & Inky with illustrations by

Nolan Ellsworth, Teaching Artist &

Former Portland Stage Education

Intern. The students performed the

book at the end of class for a live

audience as part of our Play

Me a Story program.

38 high

school students

attended our winter

Playwriting Workshop

with Almost, Maine

playwright, John

Cariani.

We

partnered with

the Maine State Museum

to create programming

centered around Women’s Suffrage,

and worked with 59 students over two

days at the museum. Students toured

the museum’s suffrage exhibit followed

by an interactive Theatre for Social

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Portland Stage offers many points of entry for a diverse population, and plays a pivotal role in the life of our

community by providing the experience of live theater - an experience which enlightens and adds insight into

our world. Portland Stage promotes access to the theater through multiple channels, including Pay-What-

You-Can performances, discounted Rush35 tickets for patrons 35 and under, subsidized Student Matinees,

complimentary tickets for partner organizations, and now, by bringing our work online and making it

available to audiences across the globe. Beyond our Mainstage productions, we engage audiences through

discussions, new play readings, and Affiliate Artist events, many of which are free or pay-what-you-can.

For the second

season in a row, we

received season-long support

from WEX, Inc., our 2019-20

Community Engagement Partner.

For the third season

in a row, we partnered

with Pine Tree

Society in offering

an American

Sign Language

interpreted

performance of our

holiday production of

It’s A Wonderful Life.

We began a

partnership with the

Theatre Development

Fund to provide Open

Captioning for one

performance of each

Mainstage production.

We received

a Bicentennial

Marketing Grant from the

Maine Office of Tourism,

which enabled us to promote our

production of Almost, Maine and

engage audiences in rural areas

of the state and across New

England, greatly expanding

our typical marketing

reach.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Throughout the season, Portland Stage typically hosts several interactive and informative

events that showcase different elements of the theater - from production, to new work, to

education. Participants have the opportunity to meet staff and artists, often rubbing elbows with

fellow supporters over wine and cheese, and attendees leave knowing more about how

Portland Stage is accomplishing our mission of art, education, and community. Although

our special events season was cut short due to the pandemic, we were still able to

connect with our members in new and exciting ways.

Following the opening night performance of Almost,

Maine, donors joined us in the lobby for a Meet

& Greet with John Cariani and the cast, giving

them the opportunity to chat with the artists face

to face while enjoying a delicious spread from the

Bread & Butter Catering Company.

In lieu of our annual

Spring Gala, we pivoted to a

virtual community engagement

and fundraising campaign,

Together in Maine, which

included a six-week rolling

online auction with items

from local businesses.

We continued our

partnership with local

language services firm,

House of Languages, to

provide translations of

synopses for all Mainstage

productions in Arabic,

French, and Portuguese.

Throughout the

Together in Maine rolling

online auction, we shared

weekly videos featuring board

members, staff, and interns, and

with the support of our corporate

partners Pierce Atwood, Custom

Float Services, and Spinnaker

Trust, we raised over $50,000

in support of our Theater

Artist Fund.

We collaborated

with inaugural poet

Richard Blanco and

members of our community

to create a short film featuring

his poem One Today, which

kicked off the Together in

Maine campaign.

VOLUNTEERS

It takes a lot of hands and helpers to produce the exceptional work on our Mainstage, and Volunteers

support Portland Stage in many ways. We are always looking for ushers, greeters, stitchers, and more,

and all volunteers are encouraged to make as big or as small a time commitment as they can. We are

eternally grateful to our 2019-20 Volunteers, many of whom have been donating their time and talent

to Portland Stage for years!

STAFF

Portland Stage is committed to strengthening our staff and promoting

a philosophy of continual, collaborative improvement. In working to

develop effective methods of communication throughout all levels of

the organization, our full-time staff meets regularly to assess and

refine goals with a focus on professional development. Several current

staff members are former Portland Stage interns: a clear

demonstration of our belief in the importance of training and

supporting future generations of theater professionals.

INTERNS

The goal of the Portland Stage Intern Program is to train the next generation

of theater professionals through hands-on instruction in multiple theater

disciplines and immersion in the systems and procedures of a working,

professional theater company. The 2019-20 intern company received training

in the areas of Carpentry, Company Management, Costumes/Wardrobe,

Directing/Dramaturgy, Education, Electrics/Sound, and Stage Management.

“This internship has been

formative to my development

as both an aspiring director

and a theater practitioner,

and I feel very fortunate to

be returning in the same role

for another season. I was

attracted to this internship

because it allowed me to gain

a more well-rounded understanding of all of the work it

takes in every department to produce a show at a LORT

theater. I gained experience as a member of the technical

crew, and am now more comfortable working with lights,

sets, and costumes.

In addition to gaining confidence in the different

technical areas, the internship also strengthened my

skills as an aspiring director with a particular interest

in the development of new works. When Portland

Stage pivoted to a virtual version of Little Festival of

the Unexpected last spring, I was able to serve as an

Assistant Director/Dramaturg for two of the three

productions. I found it enlightening to watch the

directors and playwrights engage with this new medium.

During such an unpredictable time for the theater

community, Portland Stage has been a consistent

source of support for those of us in the program.

When the physical theater shut down productions in

March, our intern coordinator began organizing weekly

Zoom calls with theater practitioners from across the

country. We heard from scenic designers, directors,

educators, artistic directors, and stage managers. These

professionals were willing to answer questions about

their career paths and current positions, and provided

excellent advice. The conversations helped expand our

network, and illustrated how connected the staff at

Portland Stage is to the national theater community.

Portland Stage is one of the few regional theaters

committed to providing an internship, housing, and

stipend. I am extremely grateful for the company’s

dedication to mentoring the next generation of theater

practitioners during such an unpredictable season.”

- Meredith G. Healy, Directing & Dramaturgy Intern

2020 IN HINDSIGHT

Between the opening of our Mainstage season in the fall of 2019 and our

closure in March 2020, Portland Stage was positioned to have one of the most

successful years in the organization’s 46-year history. Given all of the successes

described in the preceding pages, and with three remaining shows lined up for

the spring, we were well on our way to a record breaking year. However, in

accordance with Governor Mills’ emergency proclamation, we closed our doors to the

public from March 13 through the end of the season due to the pandemic. In the months

When given the option to turn

tickets for cancelled shows into

tax-deductible contributions, over

up and donated the value of their

tickets back to the theater!

that followed, our senior staff and board met virtually and frequently to ensure that Portland Stage would

continue fulfilling our mission and serving our community.

As the pandemic seismically changed our world, the deaths of George Floyd,

Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery confronted us with the unending issue of

racism that has plagued our country since its founding. In mourning and in

response, Portland Stage issued a statement of solidarity with the Black Lives

Matter movement and created an Ad Hoc Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Committee to begin our work in ensuring that we play a leadership role in our

community’s commitment to anti-racism. At our Annual Meeting in June, we

added this call to action to our Strategic Plan, and we will continue to stand

shoulder to shoulder with BIPOC artists, staff, board, audiences, students,

teachers, and members of our community to say no more to white hate, no

more to white indifference.

We dug into the oft changing rules

of the Payroll Protection Program,

and secured a fully forgivable

$225,000 loan, which allowed us to

continue paying staff and artists to

create online content and expand our

virtual presence.

We continued

to engage students

throughout the spring and

summer both virtually and safely

in person, and in the Spring of

2020 alone, our virtual Education

Program content reached over

Once our

Mainstage went

dark, our artists and

production staff kept

storytelling alive through our

weekly PS Stories from the

Stage video series, sharing

memories of their favorite

on-stage and backstage

moments.

Before closing our

doors, we filmed our

Mainstage production of

Native Gardens and offered

patrons the opportunity to

stream the production

online - a first for Portland

Stage!

GOALS FOR THE COMING YEAR

As we reflect on our 46th season and look ahead to celebrating our 50th in just a few years, Portland Stage

recognizes the importance and urgency of making our theater and the work on our stages relevant and

accessible to all members of our community - both in person and virtually. We acknowledge our role in the

systemic racism prevalent in our country, and we commit to educating ourselves and inviting our

community to join us as we learn to practice anti-racism.

We will find creative solutions to providing exceptional theatrical experiences during this pandemic and

beyond in a fiscally responsible manner that supports our community, staff, and artists. We are committed

to maintaining the vibrancy of our city and state through all of our programming - from the Mainstage

productions at our core to our reimagined New Work and Education initiatives.

In reflecting on our accomplishments over the past year,

I am overcome with pride and appreciation for our

hardworking staff and artists. Portland Stage started out

our 2019-20 season stronger than ever, and in spite of

the pandemic, we continued to serve our community

during some of the most challenging months ever faced

as an organization, as a community, and as a nation.

Portland Stage remains committed to fulfilling our

mission, and come what may, we will continue to search

for better ways to engage our community with timely

and relevant productions and programming. Now more

than ever, we aim to make the theater more inviting and

accessible, whether in person or online.

To all our friends and supporters, thank you for helping

us get this far and accomplish so much. With your

continued belief in our work, we will keep Portland Stage

a thriving, relevant, and innovative center for the arts in

2021 and beyond.

With gratitude and hope,

Anita Stewart
