The Cove School provides
highly individualized education
and life strategies for students with
complex learning disabilities.
For over 70 years, Cove has
believed that every child, given
the appropriate support, accommodations
and time, has
the potential to learn, grow and
flourish. The Cove School has
changed lives and built futures
for countless students and their
families.
A private K–12 day school in
Northbrook, Cove is a national
leader in learning disability education,
a special education center
approved by ISBE to serve
students with Learning Disabilities,
Speech and Language Disabilities,
Other Health Impaired
(OHI), Emotional Disabilities
and Traumatic Brain Injury
(TBI).
Cove’s dual purpose is to provide
students with customized
learning strategies to complete
an academic curriculum and to
facilitate the development of
their social, emotional and selfadvocacy
skills. This approach
creates a space for students to
build the self-confidence necessary
to make a successful transition
to their community schools
or to make post-secondary
choices.
While serving nearly 170 students
from over 50 school districts
each year, Cove limits class
sizes to no more than 10 students
per class. Cove’s 118 staff members
range from unit-level teachers
to clinical support-minded
specialists, such as speech and
language pathologists, social
workers, reading teachers, occupational
therapists and more.
At all unit levels, Cove provides
individualized “whole
child” education, implementing
robust programs in STEAM,
art, music, drama, PE, transition
services and more. In the classroom,
Cove integrates cuttingedge
research into every aspect
of its instructional methods, including:
A school-wide executivefunctioning
curriculum, embracing
the development, growth
and utilization of students’ E.F.
skills.
Orton-Gillingham, a proven
multi-sensory approach to reading,
incorporated into every
reading lesson.
Neurobiological understandings
of core cognitive processes,
matching methodologies to each
student’s learning attributes.
Cove parents, teachers and
specialists work hand-in-hand to
ensure the best possible educational
plans for students. When
students arrive at Cove, they immediately
feel the difference that
comes from a nurturing, supportive
setting. They feel safe yet
challenged to reach their fullest
potential, and they often make
new friends, establishing the social
relationships that are so important
in life.
Furthermore, students at Cove
receive direct support to make
and maintain those authentic
peer relationships. Cove’s cutting-edge
instructional methodologies,
including classroom
ability-grouping, allow students
to feel at home within a learning
environment. With over
twenty-five after school activities,
monthly social events and
limited class sizes, Cove gives
students the opportunity to find
the community meant for them.
If you know a child who could
benefit from an enhanced learning
atmosphere, we invite you to
The Goddard School offers best childhood
preparation for success in North Shore
For over 30 years, The Goddard
School has been a trusted
name among parents and families.
Its classrooms are safe, nurturing
environments for children
six weeks to 6 years, offering
age-appropriate opportunities
to explore and discover. From
infants to toddlers, preschoolers
to pre-kindergarteners, highly
trained teachers lead each child
to reach developmental milestones,
preparing the children
for social and academic success.
At The Goddard School located
in Skokie, the on-site owners,
Andrew and Mary Fratini, work
to make sure every family enjoys
a warm, positive experience.
They strive to provide the best
quality program for each child
year-round, offering full-time
and part-time schedules with
open enrollment. The F.L.EX.
Learning Program ensures that
they meet high standards specific
to early learning, development
and care.
The F.L.EX. Learning Program
(Fun Learning Experience)
is grounded in research on how
children learn best: Children
experience the deepest, most
genuine learning when they are
having fun. It’s designed to help
build each child’s emotional,
academic, social, creative and
physical skills — including 21stcentury
skills such as communication,
collaboration, creativity
and critical thinking — to
provide a well-rounded experience
and help each one become
school-ready, career-ready and
life-ready.
Twenty-first century skills
also tie in directly with STEAM
learning (science, technology,
engineering, arts and mathematics).
Introducing these subjects
early on helps promote children’s
natural curiosity in them,
increasing the chance that children
will pursue STEAM-related
careers later on in life.
“Supporting STEAM learning
at the preschool level involves
identifying activities children
naturally do for opportunities
to further guide them,” Andrew
said. “When children solve puzzles
or play with blocks, they
create pathways in their brains
that help with more advanced
STEAM skills later on.”
The preschool and pre-kindergarten
classrooms integrate this
play-based learning philosophy
into their lesson plans.
In the preschool classroom,
children use a variety of interesting,
hands-on learning and reading
materials to make play more
complex and challenging. Their
play also becomes more social
and cooperative as they build
their social skills, make friends
and learn to collaborate.
Children continue their journey
of exploration and discovery
in the pre-kindergarten
classroom. Teachers help them
apply their developing literacy
and math skills through fun, purposeful
learning experiences.
Play-based learning is so effective
that the results of a recent
review by the Children’s
Progress Academic Assessment
(CPAA) show that Goddard
School students score 45% higher
on mathematics and literacy
assessments compared to non-
Goddard peers. CPAA is an early
childhood assessment system
that assists teachers in making
informed and individualized instructional
decisions.
Kensington School a partner in community
What parent doesn’t want
the best for their child? As
parents, we want to see our
children grow successfully,
achieving more than even
we ourselves have accomplished.
When searching
for a first full-day school
experience for young children,
parents seek a program
in which their child is
encouraged and educated,
nourished and loved.
Kensington School’s
founder, Barbara Marlas,
believed what studies
would later show: The optimal
time for setting the
stage for future learning
begins in the early years.
Determined to provide an
environment specifically
created for the education
of pre-kindergartners, she
opened her first school in
the Chicago suburbs in
1969.
Since that first year,
Kensington School has developed
into a leader in early
childhood education and
recently opened its 10th location
in Glenview and will
soon open its 11th in Arlington
Heights and 12th in
Hinsdale. The educational
integrity and the sustained
determination to provide
children with the best possible
learning opportunities
have been keenly fostered
over the years by Marlas,
her family and her staff of
educators. Never stagnant,
always evolving, Kensington
School’s carefully designed
curriculum encourages
children from infancy
through kindergarten age to
be curious, to explore and
to seek answers.
Kensington School actively
partners with families
and the community at
large. The social and academic
skills that will serve
a child throughout their life
begin with this partnership.
As a community of likeminded
parents, Kensington
families join with staff
to celebrate and encourage
the young children in our
midst.
From comprehensive
curriculum for every age
to natural and organic food
served family style, to talented
teachers, beautiful
materials and environments,
the magic of learning
and the hum of activity
fill Kensington School’s
classrooms each and every
day.
Gardening in the Kensington
organic garden,
expanding Spanish vocabulary
through songs
and games with our Spanish
specialist and building
strength and flexibility
with our yoga instructor,
children participate in additional
enrichments that
broaden their interests.
The Kensington Tinkerlab
gives students ages 3 and
above the unique opportunity
to wonder, think and
dream as they build with
open-ended, real materials.
From the youngest infants
to our oldest kindergarten
students, music
plays an important role in
every child’s day. Songs
gently guide children
through transitions; fullbody
music and movement
activities provide powerful
links to learning; and
seasonal performances are
a highlight for parents and
grandparents.
Kensington School’s
standards for excellence in
early education align with
the mission and values of
The National Association
for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC), the
premier accrediting body
for early childhood programs.
All eight eligible
Kensington School locations
have achieved this
gold standard accreditation.
Kensington School’s
new locations will strive
for this accreditation as
soon as they are eligible.
When a child attends
Kensington School, they
are not only experiencing
a superior early childhood
education, but their family
is part of a support system
that communicates, encourages
and delights in the
joys of raising a child.
St. Norbert School prepares students for lifelong success
For over 100 years, St. Norbert
School has enriched the lives of
students from Pre-K-8th grade
through its challenging curriculum
designed to prepare students
for a life of success. This curriculum,
when combined with our
unique culture of care, inclusivity
and community grounded in
values and faith, facilitates the
development of the whole child
that is ready to thrive in the 21st
century.
At St. Norbert School, we are
committed to equipping students
with the skills needed for success
in a rapidly changing world.
This means students learn how
to learn. They learn to navigate
knowledge, think critically and
develop a viewpoint all while
exhibiting respect, integrity and
excellence — three of our four
core values. This ensures our
students are prepared to enter the
unknown and thrive in whatever
they choose to do.
More importantly, a high-quality
education such as that found
at St. Norbert School ensures all
our students develop not only
academically but also spiritually
by instilling the sustaining values
that ensure our kids do what
is right when no one is watching.
Instilling these lessons at a
young age ensures the next generation
of leaders have the moral
foundation needed to lead our
world in the years to come. This
is what drives our foundation of
faith where students learn compassion
for others and a shared
sense of service. Service to our
world and to God — our fourth
core value and the foundation
with which we live.
Just as it is important to develop
the mind and spirit, our holistic
approach to learning ensures
students have the opportunity to
participate in an array of athletics.
Students can choose from nine
different sports and our no-cut
policy ensures every child gets
the chance to do so because it’s in
these opportunities that kids learn
invaluable skills of teamwork,
sportsmanship and discipline.
Whether it is cheerleading, basketball,
track and field or football,
there is an array of athletic opportunities
for kids to try.
Students at St. Norbert School
are inspired to become confident,
independent, lifelong learners
skilled with the critical thinking,
collaboration, resilience and
responsibility needed to reach
their full potential in school and
in life.
St. Norbert School creates
the path for success, but it’s our
students that reach for it and
achieve it during their time with
us and beyond.
Countryside Day School continues to fill niche in community
Countryside Day School,
a renowned institution in
Northbrook for more than
50 years, continues to fill
a niche in the educational
market by providing students
16 months through
eighth grade with an unique
learning experience that
emphasizes not only rigorous
academic studies but
also the development of
critical character skills essential
for success not just
in school, but more importantly
in life. Countryside
is committed to working in
partnership with parents to
help young people become
more than great students
but also exceptional adults.
Faculty at Countryside
understands education in a
broader and deeper context
than conventional schools.
Teachers see school as an
internship to adulthood in
which students develop a
strong sense of agency and
empathy. Countryside students
feel a deep responsibility
to make a contribution.
This is accomplished
in classes that are “microsocieties”
designed to emulate
real life, with mixed
ages, the expectation to
take initiative, permission
to follow interests which
develops deep concentration
and an intrinsic love
of learning and room to
learn that failing is necessary
in order to accomplish
great things.
This great work is
also accomplished with
uniquely strong one-to-one
student-teacher relationships
where teachers do
more than offer academic
content but also serve as
mentors to their students.
Teachers’ knowledge of
each individual student is
one of the most treasured
aspects of the Countryside
experience by both
students and parents alike.
It is also what makes the
role of teaching so inspiring
that Countryside Day
enjoys very little teacher
turnover.
The final piece of the
Countryside success strategy
is a close working relationship
with parents in
which faculty share observations
of their students,
seek information from
parents about what they
see at home, and make
recommendations regarding
parenting based on the
expert, collective experience
of master teachers.
The CDS faculty is keenly
aware of the changes in
culture that are impacting
children and families and
how these changes are affecting
the development of
young people.
The mission of Countryside
Day School is to
provide an education that
assists students in developing
the qualities of respect,
responsibility and
resourcefulness so they
become great students and
exceptional adults.
Countryside’s website,
countrysideday.org, is a
great place to start your
research, but families say,
without exception, that
it is a visit to the classrooms
themselves that reveal
the unparalleled and
awe-inspiring educational
experience. Parents are
encouraged to schedule a
personalized tour anytime.
Regina Dominican, where North Shore
enrollment continues to grow rapidly
“This fall, Regina Dominican High
School is looking at a 51 percent increase
in freshmen enrollment, with the
most significant numbers coming from
the North Shore,” president Elizabeth
Schuster remarked. “Never has the value
of single-gender education been more
important to parents and students than it
is today. At open houses, we outline the
science. There have been significant studies
on the impact of the all-girl environment
during this important developmental
stage — and it shows when these young
women enter college and the workforce.”
Admittedly, the school’s best marketing
comes from its graduates. On average, 91
percent of Regina Dominican graduates
are accepted to their university of first
choice and 46 percent of the 2019 graduates
choose majors in the STEM fields.
“Keep in mind, most of these students
did not walk in the door focused on the
sciences, but given the opportunities we
offered they developed the interest and
confidence to pursue these passions,”
Schuster noted.
Known for launching leaders, the
school’s Leadership Institute has grown
to offer opportunities to all students at every
level, from freshmen to seniors. Students
learn to use their strengths to listen,
inspire and empower others to be the best
they can be and make a difference in the
world.
“We find involvement in the Regina
Dominican Leadership Institute is a key
differentiating factor during the college
application process,” Schuster said. “Universities
are taking note of this program,
the impact it is having on a young woman’s
college choices is evident. Not many
students walk away from high school
with a veritable leadership portfolio, but
at Regina Dominican they have that opportunity.”
Regina Dominican’s campus is also
growing.
“We are embarking on a campus redevelopment
plan to ensure the physical
school reflects the innovation seen in our
classrooms,” Schuster explained.
To do this, they are working with alumna,
architect Carol Ross Barney, most recently
lauded for her work on Chicago’s
Riverwalk.
On the athletic front, the school is more
vibrant than ever with the recent launch of
home fields for soccer, lacrosse and softball,
plus a new athletic director who is
focused on raising the school’s competitive
profile.
Open houses are slated for Oct. 17
and Nov. 10, all are welcome. Till then,
please call to schedule a Shadow Day for
your daughter or visit rdhs.org for further
information.
On Stage Salon and Spa
continues local success
When Steve Stavros left
his hometown in Greece to
come to America, he had
scissors in his hands and
a dream in his heart. He
wanted to make the world
a better place, one haircut
at a time. Stavros knew
that one day his passion
for hair and love for the
business would eventually
pay off. Before long, Stavros
and his wife Effie made
their dream a reality and in
June of 1973 when their
first baby was born — On
Stage Salon and Spa.
Steve and Effie’s very
first shop was located
in Niles. On Stage then
moved to Skokie and
then Highland Park before
planting its seeds and
growing to its full potential
in Glenview in the
late `90s, when Stavros
built his very own place at
654 Waukegan Rd. After
the heartbreaking loss of
his wife, Stavros’ daughter
Vasi and his two sons
Dean and Alex all helped
their dad run the shop.
His entire staff thought he
would retire in that building
but a business opportunity
arose and Stavros
once more packed up his
shop and moved his passionate
employees to Plaza
Del Prado at Willow and
2757 Pfingsten Rd.
The On Stage family
feels right at home here in
the Plaza. The surrounding
shops located in the mall
are convenient for our staff
and clients who are coming
to get their hair, makeup,
nails, or waxing done.
We have come to love
Glenview, the surrounding
suburbs and the clientele
we’ve had the pleasure of
getting to know over the
past 40 years. Since being
in our new location,
we have gained so many
incredible new customers
who we truly appreciate.
We hope to continue
the tradition of making
them life long clients and
friends.
The Tsornis family has
grown the salon and its
staff to include so many
amazingly talented employees.
They are dedicated
to their craft and
continuing their education
by attending classes
and events held by the top
educators in the industry.
Learning and surrounding
themselves with the industry’s
finest products, techniques
and styles to share
and pass on to their amazing
clientele, is the secret
sauce to their creative
spark and endless passion.
On Stage Salon and Spa
offers customized consultations
to offer the perfect
personalized service just
for you. Services including
an array of hair coloring,
beautiful haircuts, smoothing
keratin treatments,
thickening or lengthening
extensions, amazing
up-dos, pampering nail
services, relaxing spa services
and a full make up
lounge in devotion to endless
beauty.
A part from being experts
in their craft, they
are committed to ensuring
your investment in yourself
by using and recommending
only the best
products that are enhancing
and nourishing to the
hair, skin and nails, allowing
the wonderful salon
experience to continue for
weeks at home.
Blessed with an extremely
loyal team and
46 years of amazing and
beautiful clients, the owners
and staff always strive
to put their hearts into their
work. We will continue to
grow our small business
and serve the community
with as much passion for
beauty as when we first
Mathnasium makes math fun again
Students are settling into
the new school year and
learning new math concepts
nearly every week.
Math topics introduced in
class today build on concepts
taught prior years.
Sometimes students have
knowledge gaps from previous
years. These gaps
can prevent kids from
keeping up with the class
— and cause them to fall
behind. Other times, students
may lose interest in
math because they don’t
feel challenged. They are
finishing work early and
acing their tests and quizzes.
Either way, Mathnasium
is the place for you.
Is Your Student Behind?
“Children don’t hate
math. What they hate is
being confused, intimidated,
and embarrassed by
math.”
Every day children
struggle in math — not for
lack of natural potential,
but because they haven’t
yet developed the right
way of thinking about
math.
At Mathnasium, we believe
that every child has
the ability to be successful
in math. It’s just a matter
of teaching math the way
that makes sense to them.
We’ll work with your child
so they understand math
and get on the path to improvement.
Our Approach
Our approach, the Mathnasium
Method, pinpoints
exactly what makes math
difficult for each child in
grades 2–12. Every day,
struggling students attend
Mathnasium to work
with our specially trained
instructors who are great
with math and great with
kids. We’ll lend a helping
hand to every struggling
student in an individual
setting—our unique approach
enables us to effectively
explain concepts
and teach a personalized
learning plan that addresses
each child’s specific
needs. With regular
attendance at Mathnasium,
we’ll teach your child how
to think the way natural
mathematical thinkers do
and open doors.
Is Your Student Ahead?
“With understanding
comes passion, and with
passion comes growth—a
treasure is unlocked.”
At Mathnasium we love
math — using it, talking
about it and especially
teaching it. We think math
is exciting, fun and interesting.
Every day, students who
excel at math and are eager
for greater challenges attend
Mathnasium for math
enrichment to broaden
their math knowledge and
learn from our experienced
math tutors.
Our Approach
Our programs are designed
to give kids more
than they get at school.
Our specially trained instructors
are exceptional
at math and love working
with kids — they make
all the difference. Our
educational materials and
teaching techniques are
designed to challenge students
in grades 2–12 beyond
what they’re learning
in school and broaden their
horizons in math. In our
centers, we nurture and
grow your child’s natural
enthusiasm for math by
broadening skills and challenging
students to think
the way that natural mathematical
thinkers do.
How can Mathnasium help
you?
The experts at Mathnasium
can help by conducting
a thorough assessment to
learn more about your student’s
math strengths and
weaknesses. The next step
is developing a customized
plan to get your child
back on track or start to
get ahead and celebrating
math successes throughout
the school year! To learn
The Gow School approach allows students to thrive
The Gow School is a
college-prep boarding and
day school for students,
grades 6-12, with dyslexia
and similar languagebased
learning disabilities.
Focusing on small class
sizes, three to seven students
per class and a low
4:1 student-to-faculty ratio,
The Gow School offers
a multi-sensory approach
to teaching that enables
dyslexic students to thrive.
The Gow community has
a sense of belonging, of
equality, and of connection
born on common trials and
shared triumph.
Gow has a start fast, finish
strong mentality and
students typically start to
see progress soon after
they step foot in our classrooms.
Progress typically
comes quickly, soon after
they invest themselves
in the program. At the
School’s core is a structured
program designed to
help students navigate the
academic day and a daily
schedule designed to keep
students busy. Between
a packed class schedule,
after-school sports, study
hall and Saturday classes,
there is little unprogrammed
time.
The School is settled on
a 120 acre campus which
gives our students plenty
of room to learn and play.
Boarding school life does
not always allow lots of
free time, but it has plenty
of room for fun. Students
are so involved – playing
sports, going on trips, and
hanging out with each other
– that they get the most
out of the rich residential
experience.
In July, the School’s coed
summer program is five
weeks of learning and fun
for ages 8-16! The Gow
School Summer Program
is for students who have
been experiencing academic
difficulties, or have
been diagnosed with dyslexia
or specific learning
disabilities. The Summer
Program runs from the end
of June to early August
with morning academics,
afternoon fun and games
and weekend adventures!
The Gow School Summer
Program gives students academic
tools and self-confidence
they can take with
them wherever they go; to
the classroom and beyond.
By combining a structured
program and environment
with flexibility,
individualization, and
room for fun, Gow provides
a rich school experience
that is precisely what
dyslexic students need to
learn and to enjoy learning.
Ronald Knox Montessori School: A 55-year tradition of excellence
Why choose a
Montessori School
for your child?
Research has shown
that the best predictor
of future success is
confidence along with
a positive sense of self.
Beginning your child’s
education at a Montessori
school during their most
formative, impressionable
years can set them
firmly on that path.
Fundamental to the
Montessori approach is
that children become independent
by developing
their sense of order, coordination,
and concentration.
As a result, they
develop positive character
qualities, self-discipline,
and the ability to “think
out of the box.”
Why choose Ronald Knox
Montessori School?
In dedicating ourselves
wholly to Maria Montessori’s
philosophy, we
adhere to the highest
standards of Montessori
education. Ronald Knox
Montessori School is fully
accredited, meeting or exceeding
standards set forth
by the American Montessori
Society (AMS). We
have over 55 years of educating
and instilling the
love of learning in children
on the North Shore —
many of our “graduates”
are now sending their own
children to Ronald Knox!
Ronald Knox Montessori
School offers children
a warm, welcoming
environment, where they
are encouraged to explore
a world of activities in
mixed age classrooms,
supervised by nurturing
teachers and their assistants.
Our teachers are
highly qualified, with credentials
from AMS certified
training centers. Our
beautiful classroom environments
are designed,
built, and maintained for
the children, following
Montessori philosophy.
“The child, making use
of all that he finds around
him, shapes himself for the
future,” Maria Montessori
said.
The children in all of our
programs are guided by
their teachers as they make
discoveries and learn in a
natural, intuitive, handson
manner. Children develop
skills they will use
both inside and outside
the classroom, such as
creative problem solving,
grace and courtesy, respect
for themselves, others, and
the world around them.
Ronald Knox children
are more than prepared to
enter elementary schools
upon “graduating.”
Our teachers respect all
children as unique individuals.
They understand that
children develop and learn
at their own pace. They
strive to instill a life-long
love of learning in all of
the children, setting them
on a path to reach their
highest potential.
Our strong, involved,
and supportive community
of parents, faculty and administrators
are dedicated
to ensuring that Ronald
Knox continues to maintain
its level of excellence.
Ronald Knox Montessori
School offers the following
programs
Parent/Child (6-23
months of age), Toddler
(2-3 yrs of age), Primary
(3-6 years of age): full &
half- day programs, including
full-day Kindergarten.
Also offered are
the options of early arrival
(Early Bird), lunch, aftercare,
a selection of enrichment
programs, and summer
programs.
No. 1 ranked Christian Heritage Academy
celebrates 35 years of faith, academic excellence
This year marked the 35-year
anniversary of Christian Heritage
Academy (CHA), a PK-12
Christian school that integrates
faith with academic excellence.
Located on a 15-acre campus at
315 Waukegan Road in Northfield,
CHA has served thousands
of families from over 40 Chicago
communities and 100 churches
with an exemplary Christian
education for students from preschool
to 12th grade.
For two years in a row, CHA
earned the ranking of No. 1 Best
Christian High School and is also
the top-ranked Christian school
among private K-12 schools in
Illinois (from Niche.com, an
independent agency that ranks
schools based on data from test
scores, college data, and ratings).
With SAT/ACT and standardized
test scores among the best in the
area, students from recent graduating
classes have been accepted
into top-tier colleges and universities,
including Northwestern
University, University of Chicago,
Duke University, University
of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign),
Case-Western University and
Wheaton College.
From the 2-year-old program
through kindergarten, CHA’s
early education programs offer
age-appropriate and researchbased
learning experiences,
focused on nurturing a child’s
faith, curiosity and love of learning.
With biblical integration and
hands-on STEAM programs, our
early childhood classes develop
a strong foundation for longterm
social and academic success,
while nurturing a heart for
Christ and his call to love and
serve others. Half-day and fullday
preschool options are available,
as well as “lunch bunch”
and extended care.
CHA takes a holistic approach
to educating the child’s mind,
body and heart through all developmental
stages.
“While academics are a major
focus, what sets CHA apart is the
Christ-centered environment and
the teachers who love God, pray
for the students, and integrate
the Bible in all subjects,” principal
Joan Okamoto said. “These
days, I do believe we need to
fight harder for the souls of our
students.”
Living out the value of “loving
God and loving others,” students
of all ages served both locally
and globally during Service
Learning Week, from younger
students making gifts for pediatric
patients and visiting the
elderly, to the Upper School students’
serving trips to Chicago,
the Texas-Mexico border, Dominican
Republic, and Cuba, to
help families in need.
Parents attribute the spiritual
formation and high-academic
performance of students to the
quality of faculty and staff,
whom CHA calls “living curriculum”
teachers.
CHA parent, Lisa S. of Glenview,
stated “The hours of 8:30-
3:30 matter. It matters who’s
influencing your children. The
teachers here are ‘living curriculum
teachers’ who follow Christ,
know Him, and love Him.” Joanna
K., a parent of two alumni
said, “CHA has influenced the
course of my children’s entire
lives. From elementary to high
school, they received Christlike
love and nurturing from
the teachers, as well as academics
and leadership opportunities
which led to admissions to
Northwestern University, and
more importantly, to their strong
faith in Christ on campus and in
the workplace.”
Discover how your child can
flourish through a Christ-centered
education that is both academically
excellent and life-transforming.
Leadership lives at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy
Beyond the gates of St. John’s
Northwestern Military Academy
lies a historic institution that has
prepared teens for college and a
lifetime of opportunity for 135
years.
“We attract a diverse group
of young boys and girls capable
of significant achievement and
looking for guidance on how to
maximize their potential,” said
Tom Stocks, president of St.
John’s Northwestern and a 1969
alumnus.
St. John’s Northwestern (SJN-
MA) opened in 1884 as a private,
college preparatory and leadership
development school. In
1995, it merged with Northwestern
Military and Naval Academy
of Lake Geneva to become St.
John’s Northwestern. Nestled in
the center of beautiful Delafield,
Wisc., SJNMA is principally a
boarding school for boys and
girls, grades 7-12; while also offering
an active day student program
to the local community.
SJNMA follows a long-established
military format for
the benefit of structure, and the
advancement of honor, dignity
and respect. Hundreds of
its graduates have been admitted
to the Five Military Service
Academies, and the overwhelming
majority advance to notable
colleges and universities.
Prominent alumni include Curtis
“Buzz” Roosevelt, the actor
Spencer Tracy and Martin Torrijos
Espino, former president of
the Republic of Panama.
The academic curriculum at
St. John’s Northwestern features
a student-instructor ratio that
allows for personal support by
highly dedicated faculty.
“Individual attention and
classroom interaction optimize
mastery of the subject matter,
and the learning process itself,”
said Dr. Eric Wozniak, SJNMA’s
Headmaster.
In addition, cadets learn outside
the classroom through field
trips, excursions, community
service and study abroad. Diploma
options include STEM Honors,
Humanities Honors, as well
as technical diplomas and paths
to earn dual college credit. St.
John’s Northwestern also offers
courses in English as a Second
Language, music, art, engineering,
technology and aviation.
St. John’s Northwestern places
a high value on faith formation
as a foundation for solid character
development. Cadets are
taught the importance of service
before self through a variety of
community service activities.
The stunning Noble Victory
Chapel — St. John the Divine,
was constructed by highly-dedicated
returning cadets serving
in World War I. The chapel is
part of the Episcopal Diocese of
Milwaukee and is celebrating its
100th anniversary.
A commitment to athletics and
wellness is yet another important
pillar of SJNMA’s program.
“Through varsity-level competition
or intramural sports or activities,
athletic competition instills
valuable life lessons such as
teamwork, dedication, and good
sportsmanship” said Mike Fink,
SJNMA’s Athletic Director.
A variety of sports are offered,
including football, basketball,
baseball, cross country, wrestling,
swimming, golf, tennis and
lacrosse.
The Academy’s 110-acre campus
is a sight to behold. The
beautiful terrain is accented by
historic early-20th Century architecture
and features a ninehole
golf course, impressive outdoor
athletic complex, obstacle
course, tennis courts and indoor
swimming pool.
St. John’s Northwestern is
rated a top Christian boarding
school by Boarding School Review
and received a perfect score
at the 2019 JROTC Program
of Accreditation review. Open
houses are held every month for
families to tour the campus, meet
the leadership, and learn about
the various scholarship and financial
aid options available.
Quest Academy launches
new AI curriculum with
Microsoft collaboration
As a leader in gifted education for over
35 years, Quest Academy has remained
true to its mission of serving the gifted
child through a dynamic and innovative
approach to learning. Quest students benefit
from an advanced curriculum that is
not limited by the age of the child; instead
highly qualified teachers ensure that academic
foundations are supported and the
work is appropriately challenging for the
individual student.
Quest Academy is excited to announce
an exclusive partnership with Microsoft
to develop an exceptional, forward-thinking
Artificial Intelligence curriculum for
our students in first through eighth grades.
It is an honor to be the only elementary/
middle school in the nation to have this
opportunity to work with Microsoft.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is revolutionizing
how we interact with the world
around us, specifically as it pertains to the
technology we encounter everyday. Inspired
by this ever-changing landscape,
Quest Academy has embraced the philosophy
of “learning today, leading tomorrow”
to ensure that tomorrow’s leaders
are indeed equipped to be AI changemakers.
“Our knowledge of the gifted child and
gifted curricula, coupled with Microsoft’s
research on Artificial Intelligence, affords
us a perfect opportunity to develop an AI
curricula for 21st-century learners,” said
Jacque Negus, Quest Academy’s Head of
School.
Quest Academy serves children in preschool
through eighth grade on its Palatine
campus that includes a large main
school building, additional preschool and
junior kindergarten spaces and a beautiful
west campus featuring athletic and
outdoor education facilities for extended
learning opportunities. Drawing from
over 50 different Chicago area communities,
parents seek out Quest for their
gifted learner when other educational settings
are not equipped to extend the curriculum
beyond grade level or when the
child exhibits both a desire and ability to
work ahead of the typical classwork. The
curriculum combines liberal arts content
with innovative and inspiring instructional
methods facilitated by teachers who
collaborate to create multi-disciplinary
projects that elicit original thinking and
creative problem solving.
In addition to a unique approach to academics,
Quest Academy is committed to
nurturing the whole child through character
education, service learning and social
emotional development.
“We have been at Quest for 11 years.
The school fulfills its mission — an advanced
curriculum with nurturing teachers.
My children entered high school so
prepared. They are also confident problem
solvers, a skill they learned very early
at Quest. Quest teaches students lifelong
educational and social skills that will help
them in high school and college.” (Quest
Parent)
The Quest Academy experience includes
a 7:1 student-teacher ratio that
supports individual student growth. After
school options such as competitive sports,
clubs, activities in the arts and academic
competition teams provide additional enrichment
opportunities and build community
throughout the student body.
Quest Academy invites families to
Lake Forest Academy enters new era of globalism
This year, Lake Forest
Academy is proud to welcome
José De Jesús as the
Academy’s 30th Head of
School. De Jesús was born
in Puerto Rico and migrated
to New York City
with his family when he
was 6 years old. Over the
past 31 years, he has been
a student, teacher and administrator
in independent
schools.
He was most recently the
head of the upper school
and a history teacher at the
Packer Collegiate Institute
in New York City. He
earned a bachelors degree
from Wesleyan University,
a masters degree in history
from Tufts University and
a second masters degree
in private school leadership
from the Klingenstein
Leadership Program at
Teacher’s College, Columbia
University. De Jesús
began his official duties on
July 1, 2019.
LFA’s community will
also greet over 100 new
students from Chicago’s
suburbs, across the United
States and many different
countries around the globe
this fall. No matter where
they call home, students
at the Academy are committed
to excellence, possess
a curiosity about the
world, and are excited to
learn in a diverse school
community.
The Academy’s focus
on globalism stretches
far beyond the make-up
of the student body. The
school places the utmost
importance on helping its
students become better
global citizens. Whether
in the classroom, on service
trips, traveling with
a class, or spending a year
abroad, LFA students are
encouraged to widen their
horizons both figuratively
and literally.
In addition to standard
and individualized coursework,
LFA students have
the unique opportunity to
work with veteran filmmakers.
Last year, LFA
was featured in “The
Global Generation,” a film
produced by LFA former
trustee and Hall of Fame
member Mike Leonard ‘66
and Executive Producer of
Leonard Films Mary Kay
Wall. The film aired on
Chicago’s WTTW channel
on Oct. 25, 26 and 27,
2018. Throughout the year,
Leonard and Wall held academic
sessions on various
aspects of filmmaking and
provided individual evaluation
of student work.
Other students participated
through interviews,
musical contributions,
drone-camera operation,
and technical assistance. A
second edition of the documentary
is currently in the
works.
As LFA students develop
new skills and build on
their interests, they work
closely with their college
counselors at the Academy
during junior and senior
year to create college
lists, attend workshops,
and work on their college
applications. LFA’s Class
of 2019 will matriculate
to 75 colleges and universities
in 23 states and
five countries. Visit www.
Missouri Military Academy teaches young men
how to take command of their lives
Since 1889, thousands of parents
have looked to Missouri
Military Academy (MMA) to
give their boys the structure, responsibility
and love they need
to grow, compete and thrive —
and ultimately become young
men who are in full command of
their lives.
Students come from across
the United States and around
the world to attend MMA. Focused
on the education of boys
in grades 7 through 12 and
post-grad year, the Academy is
a college-preparatory boarding
school with a military tradition.
MMA’s comprehensive 360°
Education empowers boys and
young men to unlock their full
potential. Through MMA, families
give their boys gifts of courage,
strength, heart and pride —
an edge to triumph in college and
in life.
“We have known what potential
he has and he is now seeing
for himself,” MMA parents Bob
and Jennifer Wever said. “MMA
has been the best decision we
have ever made for our son.”
MMA understands and embraces
how boys learn and what
inspires and challenges them.
Through MMA’s tight-knit environment,
supported by peers,
teachers, and mentors, boys learn
personal accountability, perseverance,
and self-discipline.
“MMA has given my son the
ability to think about his choices
and to take responsibility for
them. He has learned that he is
in charge of his freedom, privileges,
and future,” MMA mom
Dr. Victoria Thompson said.
“He said to me, ‘I know I don’t
tell you enough, but I am very
grateful for the opportunity you
have given me to be able to go
to MMA.’”
Known for their sense of character
and strong leadership traits,
MMA graduates consistently
achieve 100 percent college acceptance
and earn an impressive
number of scholarships. The
Class of 2018 earned more than
$6.5 million in college scholarships,
and recent graduates have
been accepted to Loyola Marymount
University, Case Western
Reserve, Savannah College of
Art and Design, the Citadel, the
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy,
University of Washington, and
more.
MMA’s unique Triumph Program
gives students an early
start on college. Qualifying students
can finish high school with
one year of college -- or even
earn their associate degree. Supported
by MMA’s structured environment,
students take classes
with William Woods University
faculty on MMA’s campus. Parents
and students benefit from a
map to college graduation, starting
as early as middle school, to
help understand their college investment
and academic plan.
Located in central Missouri,
approximately six hours from
Chicago, Missouri Military
Academy’s 288-acre campus
provides a safe, supportive, and
scenic setting for learning and
growth. Visit missourimilitaryacademy.org
Woodlands Academy
prepares tomorrow’s
global leaders with
global education today
As aptly stated by the
Brookings Institution,
“The challenges that face
the world today — from
global poverty and climate
change to financial
systems and conflict —
require globally-minded
solutions. Global competency
skills are necessary
so that young people can
invent a future that appropriately
addresses global
challenges.”
Additionally, research
shows that students who
learn about global issues
are more than twice as
likely to see the importance
of personally taking
social action. Global learning
encourages awareness
and critical thinking about
issues such as poverty, climate
change, religious and
cultural differences, world
trade and politics.
Graduate of Woodlands
Academy of the Sacred
Heart Julie Bateman was
inspired to help solve
global challenges because
of the experiences of
her Rwandan-born high
school best friend who
was forced to flee her native
country because of the
country’s cruel past. After
Forest Bluff School fosters independence
in joyful learning environment
At Forest Bluff School, an
internationally renowned AMIaccredited
Montessori school in
downtown Lake Bluff, students
between the ages of 18 months
and 14 years experience the joy
and satisfaction of a self-directed
learning approach that honors
their innate curiosity, encourages
independence and respects
the individuality of each child. A
Forest Bluff School education focuses
on the child’s skills for discovery
and exploration through
hands-on learning opportunities
at every age. The child-centered
instructional methods allow students
to take ownership of their
learning and provide students
with the skills and confidence to
take risks, challenge themselves,
and embrace their “failures” as
learning opportunities.
Forest Bluff School students
begin developing their independence
in the youngest of classrooms,
where they are given the
opportunity to choose their own
work, ranging from practical life
skills such as preparing food and
setting a table for a communal
meal to painting, sewing and arranging
flowers. As they progress
through the years, students
take on greater responsibilities,
such as creating daily and
weekly work plans, coordinating
small-group field trips to supplement
their classroom research
and participating in service
learning trips that require detailed
planning and preparation,
all of which the Secondary Level
(ages 12-14) students do themselves.
By allowing children the
freedom of choice in their learning
at every age, a Montessori
education allows children to be
the primary agents in developing
their own intellect and character,
an experience that is both profound
and joyful for Forest Bluff
students.
As a true Montessori school,
we support the development of
the whole child. Students at Forest
Bluff School not only exhibit
academic excellence, but also
the many qualities that constitute
positive character development:
empathy, integrity, grit, resilience,
responsibility, initiative,
self-discipline, self-reflection
and respect for themselves, others
and the environment.
Graduates of Forest Bluff
School achieve excellent records
at public and private high
schools, large and small, local
and national. Recent graduates
have gone on to attend Lake Forest
High School, Lake Forest
Academy, Woodlands Academy,
St. Paul’s School and Phillips
Exeter Academy, among others.
Every member of the Forest
Bluff School faculty holds
a Masters degree and is AMI
Montessori certified. Our experienced
and dedicated teachers
work closely with one another,
sharing their wisdom and best
practices for supporting all students
in their quest for knowledge,
understanding, and genuine
human connections.
Forest Bluff School recognizes
the importance of building
strong relationships with the
families it serves. As such, we
maintain close communications
with parents on an ongoing basis
through our Parent Education
programs that include book discussions,
Parent & Baby classes
(for children under 18 months),
guest lecturers, and more. Adults
and children alike benefit from
the supportive and welcoming
parent community at Forest
Bluff School. For more information
Sacred Heart educates children’s minds, hearts
Families are drawn to
Sacred Heart School because
of its mission to
educate children’s hearts
and minds in a faithfilled,
Catholic community,
teaching 21st-century
skills. They are proud of
their growing school and
excited that Sacred Heart
was named a 2018 National
Blue Ribbon School
of Excellence. To be a
Blue Ribbon nominee, a
school’s test scores must
place them in the top 15
percent nationally on standardized
tests. Even more,
Blue Ribbon Schools must
demonstrate that they are
extraordinarily committed
to meeting the unique
needs of students, and they
must show that faculty,
teachers, parents and students
collaborate to ensure
students’ success.
School begins each day
with Principal Kristen
Fink personally welcoming
each student by name
into the building. Studies
show that when students
are greeted, or “seen” by
multiple people at the
start of their school day,
engagement in school increases,
test scores go up
and students feel valued.
Throughout this past
year, Fink has had the opportunity
to visit some
high-performing schools
through her participation
as a fellow in the University
of Notre Dame’s Center
for Transformational
Educational Leadership
(CTEL). She learned that
the power of gathering the
entire learning community
first thing in the morning is
striking. Therefore, rather
than starting each day by
going to individual homerooms,
students will come
together as a school in the
gym to pray, build community,
learn from each other
and celebrate success.
Each day of the week will
have a different theme.
Morning Assembly will
provide Sacred Heart with
the opportunity to live out
its root beliefs and grow
together as a faith community.
To accommodate
Morning Assembly and
to avoid losing any valuable
instructional time,
the school day has been
lengthened by ten minutes.
Sacred Heart students
thrive under a faculty
committed to continuous
improvement through
ongoing professional development.
More than 70
percent of teachers have
masters degrees. They
collaborate across grade
levels and subject areas
to provide a rigorous curriculum.
The highly specialized
Student Services
Department — with specialists
in math, reading,
and speech as well as a
counselor — supports
teachers and learners, differentiating
to ensure each
child’s needs are met.
Since 2009, Sacred
Heart has been an Apple
Distinguished School for
successful integration of
technology. The STEAM
lab offers opportunities to
explore and innovate with
circuitry, coding, robotics
and software engineering,
all while collaborating
with peers.
Student life extends far
beyond school hours with
after-school care and a
teacher-supervised Homework
Lab as well as arts,
sciences and athletic offerings.
A highly engaged
drama troupe, band, choir,
enrichment classes and
no-cut competitive team
sports keep students engaged
and filled with
school spirit.
Five years ago, Sacred
Heart introduced its first
three-year-old preschool
class. Today, Sacred Heart
School has two preschool
classes and there are three
junior kindergarten classes
slated for fall, including
one full-day program. Sacred
Heart’s classes are
growing, including the
highest retention in five
years from kindergarten to
first grade.
North Shore Country Day focuses on what matters
In 1919, North Shore
Country Day (NSCD) was
the visionary answer to
a fundamental question:
What matters most when
educating a child? Since
then, NSCD has continually
refined its answer to
propel the school’s educational
model forward
with purpose and passion,
building a transformative
JK-12 community on four
essential pillars:
Purposeful Challenge —
Truly knowing each student
allows faculty to challenge
and support them as
people and learners.
Intentional Design —
NSCD carefully crafts its
entire JK-12 program to
optimize learning, develop
skills and prioritize wellness.
Courageous Exploration
— The school pushes students
to participate widely
and take risks regularly,
ensuring they stretch, explore
stumble and grow.
Conscientious Community
— The diverse community
and collaborative
culture help students understand
themselves and
their obligations to each
other, their communities
and their world.
North Shore Country
Day is a place where
school is engaging, interesting,
rigorous and fun.
Teachers know each student
and set the bar high
in order to build confident,
independent thinkers. Students
balance passions
with responsibilities and
learning becomes a way of
life.
Early Childhood
Every moment in
NSCD’s junior and senior
kindergarten program is
an opportunity for joyful
learning. These youngest
students are known and
loved, they’re empowered
and encouraged. Asking
questions, making choices,
listening, participating in
discussions, sharing, reading
books, creating art,
making music, speaking
Spanish and moving about.
Lower School
NSCD believes that
learning is engaging when
it’s meaningful, awakening
the senses and opening
the mind. Students
develop a solid academic
foundation, venture into
local communities and
are encouraged to think
globally — not only growing
in knowledge but in
character. Students learn
to speak up and become
self-advocates. The goal
is to see each child thrive
by helping them develop
the self-confidence needed
to truly blossom in a challenging
program.
Middle School
NSCD Middle School
faculty sees the world
through students’ eyes,
and not only understand
but truly enjoy adolescents.
They also set high
standards and demand
academic accountability.
The school welcomes
spontaneous ideas that enhance
learning: An experiment
becomes a Science
Olympiad project, a debate
evolves into a Model
United Nations presentation
and a service-learning
exercise builds awareness
to enlighten others.
Upper School
The North Shore Country
Day Upper School is
vibrant, challenging, engaging
and intentionally
designed for learning. The
long-block schedule is just
one example. With four
75-minutes classes per
day, students have time
to practice and develop
skills, and understand
and analyze material on a
deeper level. It also provides
teachers flexibility to
design a range of learning
experiences. The goal is to
support meaningful academic
engagement, inquiry-based
and experiential
learning and a more balanced
and healthy school
experience.
Outcomes
The true outcome of a
North Shore Country Day
education is seen in graduates
who advance into college
and the world fully
prepared for whatever
comes next. They are exceptionally
equipped with
the skills and the mindsets
to make an impact on their
world after years spent exploring,
collaborating and
embracing the school’s
motto, “Live and Serve.”
Winnetka Public School Nursery uses play-based approach for success
Winnetka Public School Nursery
has such a strong commitment
to its play-based Reggio
Emilia approach that over the
last several years, eight WPSN
teachers have travelled to the
actual town of Reggio Emilia,
Italy to engage in educational
conferences about the learning
style. Their travels and research
have helped to structure WPSN
as one of the preeminent Reggioinspired
schools in Chicagoland.
Established in 1926 and serving
children ages 16 months
through junior kindergarten,
WPSN has been implementing
the Reggio style for almost 30
years. The approach came about
in post-World War II Italy with
the recognition that in order
to build a different future, the
community had to start by acknowledging
the rights of children.
Today in a Reggio-inspired
classroom, teachers observe
children’s interests and playing
styles and base their classroom
goals off of that. Children’s relationships
with each other and
their teachers are integral to their
learning, and classrooms are set
up to promote social interaction.
To more fully embrace this
style of learning, the teachers
who have so far chosen to attend
the conference participate
in long days filled with intense,
thought-provoking lectures and
school visits.
Between the four teachers who
attended in Spring 2017, they
took 214 pages of notes and attended
58 lecture hours.
Each teacher has taken away
unique aspects of the approach
to incorporate at WPSN, but all
teachers acknowledged what a
valuable experience the conference
is and that they are grateful
for the reminder of how knowledgeable
children are.
WPSN teacher Carolyn Wing
remarked that upon her return,
“The trip most affected my documentation
process: how I observe,
record and process what
I see in the classroom. It helped
me greatly in bringing it to a
higher level and aided me in seeing
the threads that connect the
children’s learning throughout
the year.” Ms. Wing further noted
that the conference allowed her
to look at the classroom space
in a less rigid way, instead opting
for more fluid arrangement
in which materials and explorations
are prepared for the flow of
ideas throughout the room.
Another WPSN teacher, Connie
Pickrell, added that as a result
of the conference “I notice I ask
more open-ended questions, and
when I am asked questions, I respond
with ‘what do you think?’
I engage one-on-one with the
children more often. In fact, the
majority of the classroom time,
I like to get on the floor with the
children and find out what they
are creating and why.” Further
Reggio-inspired decisions Pickrell
has observed other teachers
and herself incorporating are the
use of natural materials and colors
in activities and art.
With the WPSN Board’s support
of teachers’ persisting efforts
to learn more about different
approaches and incorporate
best practices for the children,
teachers will continue to travel
to Reggio Emilia to seek inspiration
in creating joyful, meaningful
spaces where the pre-schoolers
can explore the world and
their relationships with others.
