Whew! The past year has just flown by! Winnetka and Northfield 

both have seen so much growth in the past year; we have 

welcomed many new residents and businesses and said fond 

farewells to several others. Our communities have seen the 

completion of several critical infrastructure projects and the 

beginnings of several more. With Music Festivals, Art Fests, First 

Fridays, Sidewalk Sales, Farmers’ Markets and Holiday events, 

there always seems to be 

something to bring our 

residents together and 

new ways to showcase the 

thriving businesses which 

call Winnetka and Northfield 

home. 

The coming year will 

build on the momentum 

of the past. The Farmers’ 

Market will open just a few 

short weeks from the date 

this Community Guide is 

published, and will once 

again feature outstanding produce, meats, eggs (a personal 

favorite) and products available from farmers, butchers and 

vendors in our area. Our always busy Park Districts have so 

many options available year-round which take advantage of 

the many facilities and open lands in our communities. New 

streetscape projects will continue the important work of 

updating our infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing 

communities. Most importantly, the many businesses who call 

these communities home will continue to welcome you and your 

neighbors. 

The Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce staff, Board

I am often asked, “What is a chamber of commerce? What do they do?” 

Chambers of commerce are an amazing local 

resource supporting small businesses in their 

community. From networking to marketing, 

the local chamber of commerce can provide 

all businesses some great benefits. 

A chamber of commerce is essentially 

a network of local businesses. It is an 

organized group of business owners and 

professionals who seek to help other 

businesses grow through networking, 

marketing resources, financial assistance, 

guidance, and more. 

Chambers usually take on 

several community functions, 

which may include: 

• Tourist information center 

• Business spokesperson 

• Economic planner and developer 

• Government relations 

• Human resources adviser 

• Public relations adviser 

• Economic counselor 

Through these functions, chambers work 

to serve local businesses and keep the 

local economy strong. 

The members of the chamber of 

commerce are the individuals, businesses, 

and organizations that volunteer their 

time to help improve the socioeconomic 

climate their community. When joined 

together, this group of people have a 

much stronger voice than they would as 

individuals. 

Anyone who chooses to get involved in 

their local chamber of commerce can 

become a member. 

Each chamber of commerce is run by 

its members. There is an elected board 

of directors that help set policies and 

determine specific goals to work towards. 

The chief officer will preside over all 

meetings, while day-to-day operations 

are typically handled by a professional 

manager (this is often a paid position). 

The general objectives of every 

chamber of commerce are as 

follows: 

• Increase local job opportunities 

• Help local business grow and thrive 

• Encourage expansion of the 

community in an efficient and 

organized manner 

• Contribute to the economic stability

Founded in 1923, the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce joined 

with the Northfield Chamber of Commerce in 2011 to provide 

a more robust community of businesses that fulfill the needs 

of our two villages. Now known as the Winnetka-Northfield 

Chamber of Commerce (WNCC) purpose as an active 

association of businesses, services, government agencies, 

schools and organizations operate on an annual membership 

basis offering a variety of benefits to serve the collective such 

as events, networking, programs, advertising, publicity, social 

media, socializing and community relations. 

The WNCC works to achieve its goals through the 

following events:

The leadership of the WNCC is comprised of a Board of 

Directors, a Legal Advisor, a Village Council Liaison, staff

Winnetka or Northfield business location. Annual membership 

dues support cooperative marketing opportunities provided 

by the Chamber to enhance our mission, “Supporting and

The Village of Winnetka welcomed 10 new businesses in 2019 

including Aboyer, Allure Nail and Spray Tan, Ann Latinovich 

Portrait Artist, Ciao Bella Sewing, North Shore Barber Shop, 

Oak Nail Salon, Sarah Dippold Design, The Shade Store, Tocco, 

and Silencieux. Several new restaurants are slated to open in 

2020 adding to our robust restaurant scene. 

Winnetka is also proud of our existing businesses, several of whom 

were honored in Make It Better’s Annual Best of the North Shore 

reading poll including Bella Bleu Bridal (Best Bridal Shop), George 

Trois (Best Fine Dining), Mino’s (Best Italian), and Stacked & Folded 

(Best Sandwiches). 

This year, the Village will undertake a collaborative planning 

process with residents, businesses and stakeholders to update its 

Comprehensive Plan to create a collective vision for Winnetka’s 

future, and identify policies and strategies to create that vision. 

The process provides a unique opportunity for the community to 

communicate their ideas regarding Winnetka’s future. 

Implementation of the Downtown Master Plan and Streetscape 

Master Plan will continue in 2020. Streetscape Phase I occurred 

in the West Elm business district in 2019 that provided water and 

electrical improvements while modernizing the look of Chestnut 

Street between Spruce and Elm Streets. The project included 

widened sidewalks, lighting, and furniture. Additional hardscape 

items will be installed, and landscaping and trees will be planted 

in spring. Streetscape Phase II will begin on Elm Street between 

Birch Street and Green Bay Road in spring. Also in 2020, design 

and planning will begin for Phase III in the East Elm Business 

District, with construction planned to take place in 2021. 

The fourth annual Winnetka Music Festival will return to the 

East Elm business district on June 19 and 20, 2020. Last year’s 

event drew two dozen emerging musical acts and thousands of 

visitors to Winnetka. Stay up to date with the Village by visiting

for the E-development newsletter, and engage with us on social 

media.

Northfield may be small in size but we’ve got tons of smalltown 

charm with just enough big city sophistication. A bustling 

crossroads in the center of the North Shore, we can boast a bunch 

of popular restaurants and lovely boutiques that offer a one-of-akind 

shopping experience for everything from cakes to cars. 

With us people come first — exemplified by our highly-efficient 

village government, which delivers topnotch services with a 

smile. The Village recently rolled out a Smart 911 system, which 

allows emergency responders to track mobile phone callers’ 

location and, thereby, improve responsiveness. And after 

months of community engagement, we will also soon have a 

new up-to-date comprehensive plan to guide village planning 

for the next two decades. 

Since incorporation in 1927, Northfield has capitalized on its 

fantastic location only 20 miles from the Loop and 25 minutes 

to O’Hare International Airport. The perfect place to live and 

work, longtime residents agree. And so do our businesses, as our 

consistent near zero vacancy rate in our Village Center attests. 

“Location, location, location,” touted one local business owner. 

“Because of that, my business has attracted customers from 

Winnetka, Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Glencoe and 

Highland Park and Northfield, of course.” 

We’re in the midst of a major new improvement in our Willow 

Road retail corridor with the addition of a new Wintrust Bank 

next to Dunkin’ Donuts and the extension of Alice Lane to 

Northfield Road, which will greatly improve traffic circulation in 

that important retail center. 

Unlike most other towns our size, population 5,400, we enjoy 

not one but two of the highest ranked school districts in the 

state, serving kindergarten through 8th grade, Sunset Ridge 

A CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY TO CALL HOME 

NORTHFIELD

School District 29 and Avoca School District 37, plus New Trier 

High School, often mentioned as one of the best high schools 

in the country. Plus, we have a beautiful, new energy efficient 

Sunset Ridge School, certified LEED Platinum and the only 

school in the state with a ComEd “Net Zero” rating. 

We emphasize green planning in our village policies, as well. 

We have a great curbside composting program with Waste 

Management, and the Village remains committed to sustainable 

stormwater strategies. We prioritize pedestrians and bicyclists, 

as well as auto safety and hope to soon begin Phase II of a study 

to extend the Skokie Valley Trail through Northfield. 

Other new improvements include the reconstruction of 

Northfield Road, and we’re working with Cook County on Phase 

II of a new safer, more walkable Happ Road. 

Northfield boasts one of the most luxe boutique public fitness 

centers in the area at the Northfield Community Center. If you 

haven’t seen the facility, please drop in at the corner of Wagner 

and Willow. All Northfield residents have resident status, and 

nonresidents are welcome, too. Northfielders can purchase 

beach passes from Winnetka at resident rates. 

Our Village is most fortunate to have a wonderful group of 

engaged organizations, from our churches and synagogues 

to our social service groups, most famously the North Shore 

Senior Center, to serve the community. 

As we like to say, “We’re like the bar in the television show, 

‘Cheers,’ where everybody knows your name.” While our 

meaning is metaphorical, Northfield literally has a couple of 

those bars in town! When you walk into one of our wonderful 

local restaurants or bars, you’ll likely see a neighbor or friend, 

and you’ll know you’re home.

The small-town spirit, charm and traditions make it one of 

the most delightful, friendly and dynamic villages along Lake

in” by 24/7 Wall Street, Winnetka is located 17 miles north of 

Chicago and is accessible from the Edens Expressway (1-94)

Northfield is the best of both worlds: a thriving, desirable

in 1927, the village is located 20 miles from the heart of 

Chicago’s Loop. With a population of approximately 5,600,

The Winnetka Police Department 

provides law enforcement and services 

to the community including crime 

prevention, parking enforcement, animal 

control, and a variety of safety, public 

education and social service programs. 

Upon request, the department conducts 

home and business security surveys and 

vacation home watch services. 

A school resource officer is assigned to 

New Trier High School. The police also 

work closely with the other public and 

private schools in the community to 

promote a safe learning environment. 

In order to provide a higher degree of 

safety and security to the community, the 

Winnetka Police Department is an active 

member of various Inter-Governmental 

Mutual Aid Groups. Some of these 

groups are the North Suburban Major 

Crimes Task Force (NORTAF), Northern 

Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), 

and the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm 

System (ILEAS).These associations 

provide the additional resources

The Winnetka Fire Department consists 

of the following career fire personnel:

Inspectors. The department is a member 

of the regional emergency dispatch 

center (RED Center), which makes it part 

of a centralized emergency dispatch 

center serving area fire departments. 

Emergency medical dispatch provides 

pre-arrival instructions such as CPR 

before paramedics arrive. The Fire 

Prevention Bureau conducts inspections 

for Winnetka, Northfield, Kenilworth, and 

Glencoe. The Public Education Division 

provides Winnetka residents of all ages 

with preventative life safety information. 

The department conducts home safety 

surveys for residents on request and 

will arrange, when possible, to have a 

fire engine visit your next block party. 

Educational tours of the fire station are 

conducted on Fridays for all organizations 

including the scouts, preschool groups

The Northfield Fire-Rescue Department 

was established in 1939 with 20 volunteer 

firefighters in the organization. Today, 

the Northfield Fire-Rescue Department 

operates with more than 50 part-time 

fire rescue staff who bring expertise from 

around the Chicagoland area. The Fire- 

Rescue Department operates the station 

at 1800 Winnetka Road and covers a 

three-square-mile area within the Village 

in addition to participation in a mutual aid 

system with neighboring communities.

A Council-Manager form of government 

serves the residents of Northfield. The 

Council consists of a Village President and 

a six-member Board of Trustees elected 

for staggered terms of four years. The 

President and Board are responsible for 

establishing policies, enacting ordinances, 

approving expenses and appointing 

the Village Manager, Village Treasurer 

and members of the various Boards and 

Commissions. 

The Village Manager is the chief 

administrative officer. The duties of the 

Manager include appointing the Village 

Attorney, Engineer and Prosecutor, 

overseeing all the operations of all 

Village Departments (Police, Fire/Rescue, 

Public Works, Finance, and Community 

Development) and ensuring the 

enforcement of ordinances, policies and 

rules established by the Board. The Village 

Manager is also responsible for advising 

the Board on establishment of new 

policies, preparation of the annual budget,

assistance with property tax questions, 

voter registration and passport services, 

including passport photos. Other services 

provided are Dial-a-Ride (a subsidized taxi 

program), temporary disability parking

in unincorporated areas. 

The township also offers general and 

emergency assistance for residents in 

financial need and operates a food pantry. 

Special pantry projects include holiday 

distributions and new school supplies.

The pantry is open Monday, Tuesday, 

Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 

p.m., and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. 

The pantry provides both perishable and 

non-perishable food items, paper goods,

for the township residents experiencing 

financial difficulties.

Three park districts serve the Village of 

Northfield. The Northfield Park District 

boundaries coincide in general with 

those of Sunset Ridge School District #29 

and include much of the unincorporated 

area north and west of the village. The 

southeast part of Northfield is in the 

Winnetka Park District and a small area 

in the southwest section corresponding 

to Glenview District #34 is located in 

the Glenview Park District. However, any 

resident who lives in Northfield receives 

resident rates for programs held inside 

the Community Center. 

The Northfield Park District includes 

three parks (Willow Park, Clarkson Park, 

and Fox Meadow) and the Northfield 

Community Center. Bordered on the east 

by the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve 

and Erickson Woods on the south, the 

village offers miles of scenic parks and 

recreational areas for outdoor activities. 

NORTHFIELD COMMUNITY CENTER 

The Community Center is the hub 

of activities including classes, sports 

practices, fitness workouts, special events, 

birthday parties and meetings. The 

facility includes a full-sized gymnasium, 

fitness center, fitness studio, Residents 

Center (multi-purpose room) and the 

Community Conference room. The 

Residents Center is available for meetings 

or children’s birthday parties and has an 

ADA compliant kitchen space attached to 

it. The Community Conference room has 

a 70-inch flat screen TV, full AV capability, 

access to a kitchenette and is also available 

to rent. 

FITNESS CENTER 

The convenient, bright, ADA compliant 

Fitness Center offers a comfortable 

space with state-of the-art equipment 

throughout, dedicated areas for 

cardio, weights and stretching, video 

classes, personal training, member only 

restrooms and showers. Enjoy your 

workouts even more with the floor-to 

ceiling wall of windows that wrap around 

the Fitness Center bringing in natural 

light and wonderful views of Willow Park. 

A variety of classes are available in the 

fitness studio. 

Willow Park 

Northfield’s largest complex consists of 

four lighted ball fields, two lighted soccer 

fields, two tennis courts and six pickleball 

courts. There’s also a ½ mile pathway with 

fitness stations and picnic shelters that 

can accommodate up to 75 people. 

Clarkson Park 

Clarkson Park has been the heart of 

Northfield since it was established more 

than 60 years ago. The park is undergoing 

a major renovation in 2020 with a new 

playground, splash pad, rain garden, 

pavilion, and multi-use structure that can 

be used for concerts, performances and 

more. Clarkson Park is home to many of the 

Park District’s special events such as Market 

& Music and the State Fair/Ribfest. Every 

winter, there is an outdoor skating rink in 

front of the Lodge from December through 

February, weather permitting. 

Clarkson Lodge is the ideal setting for 

celebrations, meetings and corporate 

outings. Building rental includes tables 

and chairs, an indoor sound system, WIFI, a 

50” tv and kitchenette. The adjacent patio, 

pavilion and spacious lawn can be used 

for receptions, ceremonies and a variety of 

other activities. Due to the park renovation, 

2020 rentals are available from August 1st 

through early December.

Winnetka Music Festival Pumps it Up for Year Four 

Winnetka, IL – February 14, 2020– The award-winning Winnetka 

Music Festival is bringing its fourth annual extravaganza back 

Father’s Day weekend. Beginning Friday night, June 19, and 

continuing all day Saturday, June 20, over 15,000 music fans from 

across the nation are expected on Chicago’s North Shore for this 

year’s line-up of prominent emerging artists. Musicians make a 

stopover in our village during their national tours, which includes 

the summer festival circuit and late-night 

television. Speaking to its increasing 

notoriety as the destination fest of the 

summer, Festival Chairman Scott Myers 

stated, “We are excited that the Winnetka 

Music Festival has become such a popular 

event across the North Shore and one that 

people look forward to for kicking off the 

summer.” 

The featured act for Friday night is St. Paul & 

the Broken Bones, whose infectious blend 

of Soul, R&B, and theatrics has graced the 

much larger stages at Lollapalooza and 

Coachella, as well as priming the crowds 

opening for The Rolling Stones on two 

tours. This high-energy band will hit the 

stage in Winnetka before embarking on 

the Wheels of Soul tour with Tedeschi 

Trucks Band, then it’s on to Wrigley Field 

opening for Zac Brown. 

Back by popular demand, trumpet 

playing savant Spencer Ludwig will 

highlight and elevate the fest’s closing 

night act with a veritable dance party of beats, funk & trumpet 

and pop music like you’ve never experienced. Spencer is a Latin 

Grammy Award Winner and recognized on campaigns for Target, 

Pepsi, and Tommy Hilfiger, the NFL Honors, and more. 

The Winnetka Music Festival features four music stages that are 

centralized for easy flow between musical acts. The music kicksoff 

Friday night with four prominent musical acts. The festival 

continues Saturday morning with The Family Stage on the Village 

Green which offers music and interactive experiences for all 

ages. Throughout the day there will be main stage acts as well as 

specialty genres and intimate listening acts in the historic Winnetka 

Chapel. Concessions will include craft beers, wine and delicacies 

from unique food trucks. 

All 25 bands for this year’s Festival 

were selected by Val Haller, Winnetka 

resident and music industry veteran 

(valslist.com). Ms. Haller, as one of the 

creators and producers of the WMF 

notes, “The Winnetka Music Festival is 

a showcase of the music industry’s top 

emerging talent in an up-close and 

personal setting. A veritable “I saw them 

when” thrill for our concert goers as our 

bands start climbing the charts” 

The Winnetka Music Festival relies 

on community support to continue 

building upon its early success and 

fostering its continued success well into 

the future. Per Chairman Scott Myers, 

“Executing an event of this scale and 

quality has only been possible through 

the collaborative efforts of volunteers, 

Valslist, the Village of Winnetka, the 

Winnetka Park District, local businesses, 

the Chamber of Commerce as well as 

residents.”

raises funds for the benefit of District 29’s

and endowment. The new energy efficient 

SRS building completed August 2017 

was the most recently funded project. 

The Capital Campaign is ongoing and

and engages more than 23,000 older 

adults and their families each year 

throughout Chicago’s northern suburbs. 

This nationally-accredited organization 

offers a comprehensive suite of services, 

including a wide array of social services, 

specialized care for people living with 

dementia, private care management, 

educational and wellness programs, 

and volunteer opportunities. NSSC’s 

continuum of services provides for older 

adults from the most independent to those 

needing more support. 

Located in Northfield, its House of 

Welcome Adult Day Services provides 

specialized therapeutic care for people 

living with memory loss and their families, 

including a Day Program, a program for 

those with early memory loss, and an 

Alzheimer’s family support group. 

In addition to its flagship location in 

Northfield, NSSC has social services offices 

in Niles, Glenview and Evanston. Social 

services staff visits clients in their homes 

and in senior housing buildings. NSSC 

also offers hospital screenings to evaluate 

patients’ care needs upon discharge in six 

area hospitals: Lutheran General, Skokie, 

Evanston, Glenbrook, St. Francis and Holy 

Family.

Institute of Senior Centers of the National
