AbstractPeople with cognitive difficulties may have problemsunderstanding the message from an ordinary, beeping, smokedetector. Some do not know at all what the beeping means andother cannot recall what they are supposed to do in a fire situationby just hearing the beeps. As a consequence, these persons mightavoid cooking, smoking and other activities that involve aheightened risk of fire. Their fear, or the fear of those aroundthem, might stop them from living as independently as they wish.This master’s thesis has resulted in a product that offers thesepeople a means of handling a fire situation. The product is called<strong>Certec</strong>-<strong>Brandtalaren</strong>, and leads the user with the help of anindividual message.The strength of the product lies not only in the solution of theproblem; it is also well suited to the target group. During productdevelopment, current fire preparedness and aids already availablewere carefully examined. This formed the basis of the solution. Toguarantee the simplicity and tastefulness of the <strong>Certec</strong>-<strong>Brandtalaren</strong>, several user tests and interviews were thenundertaken.The <strong>Certec</strong>-<strong>Brandtalaren</strong> was originally based on an idea fromArne Svensk, <strong>Certec</strong>, Rehabilitation Engineering ResearchDivision, Lund Institute of Technology, and developed incollaboration with Nautilus Innovation AB, who will include it intheir product assortment.Keywordssmoke detector, aid, personal message, alarm, evacuation,developmental difficulties2 • <strong>Certec</strong>-<strong>Brandtalaren</strong>
