THE EFFECT OF <strong>1914</strong> CALLI GENERATION<br />

ON TURKISH PAINTING<br />

SUMMARY<br />

The Ottoman Empire had taken a big step on the path to modern with new<br />

education models, ecumulation of ideas and the other areas in the nineteenth<br />

century when the movement of westernization was seen. And in this century the<br />

empire began to open to the european countries. And the following years<br />

Suleyman Seyyid and Ahmet Ali Bey was sent to the abroad to study painting. It<br />

was a turning point for the Turkish Republic. The artists of the Turkish Republic<br />

were sent to study painting and they brought new art technics to the countries.<br />

The Turkish painting developed according to the modern painting traditions and<br />

in <strong>1914</strong> it tended to a new trend. With the effect of The World War I, which<br />

affected all of the European countries strongly, the artists in the abroad begun<br />

to turn back to the country and these devolopments started with this. They were<br />

sent to Europe to study painting between 1908-<strong>1914</strong> with the beginning of the<br />

constituional monarchy. And they could provide an important employment of<br />

the country. The artists, Sami Yetik, Ali Sami Boyar, Hikmet Onat, Mehmet<br />

Ruhi, İbrahim Çallı, Nazmi Ziya, Feyhaman Duran, Avni Lifij and Namık İsmail<br />

called the age of Çalli. They had important benefits to the Turkish painting with<br />

their experiences and with giving to their students. The aim of this thesis is to<br />

search these ages which form today’s sense of art. The article wants to show the<br />

effects and helps. During the searching the subject, a lot of literature review and<br />

the documents in the archive records were used.<br />
