5.Conclusion
Although studies on intra-industry trade of Turkey have increased in recent years it is not regarded to be
enough. It is clear that studies on this issue would bring contribution to the development of intra-industry trade
literature in our country.
In this study, it has been shown that the Turkey’s foreign trade with Middle Eastern countries is of the
inter-industry, despite increases in intra-industry trade.
The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows:
1.Although the share of intra-industry trade has increased, it is possible to say that Turkey’s foreign trade
structure still has inter-industry nature. Intra-industry trade index for Turkey reached 42,1 % in 2009 which was
26,9 % in 1992.
2.When we observe Turkey’s G-L index in sectoral level, it is seen that intra-industry trade is important in
manufactured goods classified chiefly by material and machinery and transport equipment sectors.
3.Although the share of intra-industry trade has increased between Turkey and Middle Eastern countries (G-L
Index value which was 4,5 % in 1992 reached 17,2 % in 2009) Turkey’s foreign trade with Middle Eastern
countries is predominantly of an inter industry structure.
4. Turkey’s foreign trade with Middle Eastern countries is of the inter-industry nature. Because the number of
sectors with G-L index is lower than 0.25 is almost always greater than 65 percent each year.
5.When we observe G-L index between Turkey and Middle Eastern countries in sectoral level, it is seen that
intra-industry trade of manufactured goods is more intensive as expected. While the index value was 17.3 % in
2009; 11.9 % part of this is manufactured good.
