Renee Hobbs is Professor of Communication and Founding<br />
Director of the Harrington School of Communication and<br />
Media at the University of Rhode Island in the USA. She is<br />
an internationally-recognized authority on digital and<br />
media literacy education and has authored five books on<br />
the subject, including Powerful Voices for Kids (2013),<br />
Digital and Media Literacy (2011) and Reading the Media:<br />
Media Literacy in High School English (2007). She has<br />
published dozens of scholarly and professional journal<br />
articles and specializes in examining the relationship<br />
between media literacy competencies and academic<br />
achievement in elementary and secondary schools. She has<br />
created numerous staff development programs for K-12<br />
teachers and developed award-winning educational<br />
multimedia, including My Pop Studio (www.mypopstudio.com).<br />
In 2012, she served as Digital Literacy Fellow for the<br />
American Library Association (ALA) Office of Information<br />
Technology Policy. Hobbs is co-editor of the Journal of<br />
Media Literacy Education, an online peer-reviewed<br />
scholarly journal. In 1993, she created the Harvard<br />
Institute on Media Education, the first-ever national<br />
teacher education program for media literacy education in<br />
the United States at the Harvard Graduate School of<br />
Education.<br />
