Renee Hobbs is Professor of Communication and Founding
Director of the Harrington School of Communication and
Media at the University of Rhode Island in the USA. She is
an internationally-recognized authority on digital and
media literacy education and has authored five books on
the subject, including Powerful Voices for Kids (2013),
Digital and Media Literacy (2011) and Reading the Media:
Media Literacy in High School English (2007). She has
published dozens of scholarly and professional journal
articles and specializes in examining the relationship
between media literacy competencies and academic
achievement in elementary and secondary schools. She has
created numerous staff development programs for K-12
teachers and developed award-winning educational
multimedia, including My Pop Studio (www.mypopstudio.com).
In 2012, she served as Digital Literacy Fellow for the
American Library Association (ALA) Office of Information
Technology Policy. Hobbs is co-editor of the Journal of
Media Literacy Education, an online peer-reviewed
scholarly journal. In 1993, she created the Harvard
Institute on Media Education, the first-ever national
teacher education program for media literacy education in
the United States at the Harvard Graduate School of
Education.
