The First Female Physician in Trieste and Maribor<br />

Summary<br />

Klara Kukovec was born to a Jewish family in 1883 in the Ukrainian<br />

part of the Russian Empire, and then went to study medicine in Switzerland,<br />

where female students had already been allowed to enroll for a few decades.<br />

During her studies she met a Slovenian and married him after she graduated.<br />

She wanted to start her practice in his homeland, Austria-Hungary, but she<br />

faced several obstacles because women’s medical education was not permitted<br />

by the state. In 1911 she managed to start a practice in her own office,<br />

during the First World War she worked in several army hospitals, and in 1919<br />

she settled in Maribor, where she started a private women’s and children’s<br />

healthcare practice. During the Second World War she fled to Ljubljana and<br />

afterwards returned to Maribor to resume her practice. She worked almost<br />
