Based on IDC estimation, this ratio for Slovakia reached about 2.17 % in the year<br />

2000 and is expected to increase to about 2.93 % of GDP in the year 2006.<br />

• In terms of per capita expenditure on IT, Slovakia’s per capita expenditure was<br />

about 161 USD in 2003. This represents only 76 %, 55 %, and 70 % of the per<br />

capita expenditures on IT of the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Hungary,<br />

respectively.<br />

• The Slovak IT sector accounted for a 0.86 % of the total employment in 1995,<br />

which is estimated to have increased to about 1.6 % in 2003.<br />

• While the study recognizes the positive progress that has been achieved in the<br />

Slovak IT sector, compared to other countries and given the human potential<br />

and other endowments Slovakia posses, this sector should receive a more<br />

serious attention in the future.<br />

3. What makes the IT sector different from other branches in Slovakia<br />

• The total production in the IT sector (which belongs to No. 72 according to<br />

Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community –<br />

NACE, Rev. 1) reached 14.5 bn. SK in 2000, which accounted for 0.66 % of the<br />

total production of Slovakia during the same year.<br />

• In terms of value added, the IT sector has the share of 0.85 % on the total value<br />

added in the year 2000. This clearly indicates the high value added contributed<br />

by this sector taking into account that this sector employed only 0.34 % the total<br />

employment in the same year. In terms of labor productivity, the IT sector ranks<br />

14 th out of the total 59 branches in the Slovak economy in 2000. In the same<br />

year, the IT sector accounted for 1.1 % (763 mil. SK) of the total collected value<br />

added tax.<br />

• In terms of its share in total production, the IT sector in Slovakia belongs to the<br />

smallest branches, ranking only 33 rd out of the 59 branches. However, in terms of<br />

its degree of competitiveness, this sector belongs to one of the highly<br />

competitive, ranking 15 th out of the total 59 branches.<br />
