contribution comes from the value added tax paid by firms (with the amount
reaching almost 468 mil. SK) and the value added tax paid by employees (with
the amount of almost 299 mil. SK).
• The amount of transfers to insurance companies and funds reached the amount
1 182 mil. SK, of which 884 mil. SK was paid by firms and almost 298 mil. paid
by employees.
4.3 Total effects of Microsoft Enterprise on the Slovak economy
• The effects of Microsoft Enterprise on the Slovak economy has been estimated
based on the expenditures of IT firms with Microsoft-related activities. Our
estimates indicate that these firms contributed almost 1 739 mil. SK to the Slovak
economy via their expenditures in the year 2002. The second expenditure channel
comes through the expenditure of employees, which generated almost 3 212 mil. SK
in the year under investigation.
• This implies that the total contribution of Microsoft enterprise to the Slovak
economy reached almost 4 951 mil. SK in 2002. Assuming that Microsoft
generated 647 mil. SK revenue from its sale of license in the same year, then
1 SK spent on purchasing a software from Microsoft would generate a nearly
7 SK effect on the Slovak economy.
• In 2002, the estimated total effect of Microsoft Enterprise on the Slovak
economy was nearly 0.5 % of GDP.
The policy implication of this study is quite straightforward. The real
convergence of the Slovak economy towards the economies of advanced countries in
the European Union and OECD depends to a great extent on the development and use
of information technology along with the accumulation of human capital and
investment into research and development.
