The first, written byLuboš Velek, director of the Masaryk Institute and Archives, describesseveral predecessors of the ASCR. In his article, Antonín Kostlánof the Institute of the Contemporary History focuses on the originand development of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences(1952–1992), which comprised research institutes, a learned societyand a body of academicians and corresponding members.ANNIVERSARYCentennial anniversary of the Institute of the CzechLanguage of the ASCRThe Institute of the Czech Language of the ASCR celebratedits centennial as the successor of the Office of the Dictionary ofthe Czech Language founded in 1911. The institution conductsresearch on such varied aspects of the Czech language – as syn -chronic and diachronic, literary and colloquial, spoken and written.The work of the Institute results in the production of basiccompendia on Czech for the general public, such as, handbookson rules of Czech orthography, dictionaries and popular literature,and in specialized publications (books or articles). It also producesa significant amount of information about Czech that can also beakademickýbulletinab40retrieved on its web-pages. The entire Czech nation also profitsfrom language consultation services of the Institute as well as frompublic lectures on most different topics related to the Czechlanguage. Particular attention is paid to the education of the youngscientific generation primarily through lectures by members ofthe staff of the Institute at universities and high schools.THE EVENTThe Learned Society’s AssemblyThe Learned Society’s two-day General Assembly took place atthe Hall of Patriots of the Collegium Carolinum and at the ASCR’smain building 16–17 May 2010. At this General Assembly, RůženaDostálová, well-known byzantologist, and Martin Černohorský,renowned mathematician, were bestowed the Medal of the LearnedSociety of the Czech Republic for their contributions to the advan -cement of science. The Scientist Awards were presented tomathematician Miloslav Druckmüller and parasitologist Jan Tachezy.The Junior Scientist Awards were given to Milan Orlit and DanaPokorná. The Learned Society Awards were presented to peda -gogues Karel Lichtenberg and Jiří Herman for their significant workas young students in the advancement of science. The GrammarSchool Student Awards were presented to 10 students from Czechprimary schools.SVĚT KNIHY 2011– ARABSKÁ KULTURAI E-BOOKYVPrůmyslovém paláci na pražském Výstavišti v Holešovicíchse ve dnech 12.–15. května 2011 konal knižní veletrh Světknihy. Ujít si jej nenechali zejména příznivci arabské literatury.Leitmotivem 17. ročníku největší knižní akce v Česku byla totiž literaturaarabského světa, zejména Saúdské Arábie, která v rámcikulturní prezentace své země nabídla mj. výstavy vědeckých objevůči ukázky arabské kaligrafie a umění. To vše v saúdských stanech,které odrážely tradiční životní styl. Organizátoři letošníhoročníku pro návštěvníky také připravili nový pavilon, Svět e-knih,který se věnoval stále populárnějším elektronickým knihám.Mezi více než pěti stovkami vystavovatelů nechybělo NakladatelstvíAcademia, jež spolu s knižními novinkami připravilo takéautogramiády svých kmenových autorů Ivana Krause, PavlaKohouta a Ivana Klímy nebo besedy s geologem a spisovatelemVáclavem Cílkem či Martinem Hilským, v jehož překladu nedávnovyšlo kompletní dílo Williama Shakespeara. Jedinečná publikace jedostupná ve dvou provedeních: plátěné vazbě ve stříbrném kartonovémpouzdru a exkluzivní, ručně vyrobené kožené vazbě. ■lsd
