Car stolen from Wilmette involved in fatal Lake County shooting, police chase
5 teens involved
charged with firstdegree
murder

A car stolen
from the
driveway of
a residence in
Wilmette during
the overnight
hours Davis
of Sunday,
Aug. 11, was involved in
a high-speed chase from
Lake County to Chicago
two nights later according
to the Wilmette Police Department
and Lake County
Sheriff’s Office. The chase
was preceded by a homicide
at a residence in
Gurnee involving the occupants
of the stolen car.
A resident in the 3100
block of Old Glenview
Road in Wilmette had
reported the vehicle stolen
on Aug. 11. The car,
a 2015 Lexus SUV, had
been left in the driveway
unlocked with the key in
the cup holder according
to the Wilmette Police Department.
Two nights later on Tuesday,
Aug. 13, a 14-year-old
Chicago boy was killed
after being shot outside a
Gurnee residence. According
to a press release from
the Lake County Sheriff’s
Office, six teenagers
traveled to the home in
the stolen Lexus to commit
a burglary. During the
course of the burglary, at
approximately 1:15 a.m.,
they allegedly confronted
the 75-year-old homeowner,
who went outside to
investigate why there were
people near his 2011 Audi,
parked in the driveway.
The homeowner later told
detectives he yelled at the
individuals to leave, but at
least one male subject allegedly
advanced toward
him with an unknown object
in his hand. According
to the press release, the
man “feared for his life”
and discharged a firearm.
At least one of the rounds
struck the 14-year-old
male, who was on foot outside
of the Lexus. A knife
was recovered at the scene
in the vicinity of where the
14-year-old was shot.
Police were dispatched
to the residence after a 911
caller, later identified as
the homeowner, informed
them that he had shot at the
individuals involved in the
attempted theft.
A short time later while
investigating a traffic crash
in the area of Route 132
and Hunt Road in Gurnee,
police were approached by
a group of teens driving
in the stolen Lexus from
Wilmette. The occupants
of the car stopped and allegedly
told the Gurnee
officers their passenger
needed medical assistance
and removed the injured
male from the vehicle.
According to the press
release, Gurnee officers
administered first aid to
the male and he was subsequently
transported to
Advocate Condell Medical
Center in Libertyville with
critical injuries consistent
with a gunshot wound. He
would later succumb to his
injuries.
“Anytime there is a loss
of life, it is a tragedy for
the family and friends of
the deceased,” said Lake
County Sheriff John Idleburg
during a Aug. 13
press conference. “Our
condolences go out to the
family of a young man
who lost his life today, despite
the circumstances.”
One of the occupants in
the Lexus who exited the
car with the injured male
was taken into custody at
the scene.
Four of the occupants
in the Lexus fled from
the scene at a high rate of
speed. Gurnee police initially
pursued the stolen
vehicle and were joined
by Lake County Sheriff’s
Deputies and Illinois State
Police. Speeds in the pursuit
reached more than 100
miles an hour according to
the release.
The Lexus eventually
stopped in the area of
North Halsted Street and
West Randolph Street,
Chicago. The four remaining
occupants were
taken into custody after a
brief foot pursuit by Illinois
State Police and Lake
County Sheriff’s Deputies.
All five defendants are
being charged with firstdegree
murder as adults.
They are:
