We revealed some months ago there were grumblings about representing the area because of the pay community board members get. Board members receive $9864 and the chairperson $19,729. Banks Peninsula is the lowest paid in the city council area. Board members have argued it should be more because they have to travel long distances to meetings and other community board business – so it takes more of their time. After the elections the situation could change and pay increased. Wednesday August 21 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi BAY HARBOUR PAGE 3 News Big grant for The Loons Club • By Jess Gibson IT IS lights, camera, action for Lyttelton’s The Loons Club after receiving a Government grant of almost $1 million. The history-rich performing arts venue on Canterbury St will get $981,000 from the Regional Culture and Heritage Fund, which has now completed the club’s long fundraising battle. The former Lyttelton Working Men’s Club has struggled with funding to carry out the re-establishment of the building since it was demolished following the 2011 earthquakes. Built in 1905, the building has been an integral, significant and well-known part of the Lyttelton community. It housed a range of commercial premises through to 1944 before it was converted to the Waterside Workers Social Club, known locally as ‘The Loons.’ In 1951, the building became a hub of support during the largest industrial dispute ever seen in New Zealand, which lasted for 151 days. The Government declared a state of emergency during the waterfront dispute and made it an offence for citizens to assist strikers – even giving food to their children was outlawed. However, the club broke the law to help strikers and their families in Lyttelton, distributing food which had been illegally donated by people sympathetic to their cause. When the Government deregistered the Waterside Workers Union and sought to seize its assets, it became a different entity – the Lyttelton Working Men’s Club, which saved the building. The newly-formed club helped reunite the community by hosting events and serving as a meeting place for local groups. Now, the club has the opportunity to “save the past and look to the future” with the recent funding. Club treasurer Thea Mickell was thrilled that the club received the full amount requested. “RCHF wanted to ensure that we didn’t have another shortfall. We’ve had a lot of funding and insurance money along the way but it was never enough to get us completed.” FULL FUNDING: Project manager Rohan Morgan and The Loons Club treasurer Thea Mickell will see part of Lyttelton’s history fully restored with a Government grant totalling almost $1 million. An informal committee has managed the hall for the past two years under the Little River Wairewa Community Trust umbrella. Part of an agreement when the hall was built was to establish a group with its own entity after two years. An annual meeting will be held on August 30 to start the process. REDCLIFFS ECO-VILLAGE A gathering of about 30 turned out to the first meeting and discussion on a strategy to turn Redcliffs into an eco-village last Wednesday. Five people agreed to form a new group which will work to help other residents reduce their emissions. $13,500 RAISED FOR FILM Fundraising for the short-film Peninsula has almost reached its target in one week. The crew need $15,000 to cover their production budget for the ‘Banks-centric’ movie and have so far received $13,500 from 69 donors. The film, which will showcase Port Levy, is a fictional drama about three isolated people who manage to connect in a very surprising way.
