‘You only get one dad’

Woods both have a great 

relationship with their dads – but 

they know it’s not like that for 

every teenage daughter. 

That is why they are writing 

and producing a book, 

Dadsitting, on some of the 

struggles and experiences a 

daughter will face as they grow 

into women. 

“We think a book will help 

educate fathers so they can have 

more of an understanding of 

what their daughter is going 

through, so they can become 

closer with their daughters. 

“You only get one dad,” said 

Montana, 17. 

Maddi, 18, said what they have 

seen, since starting the project 

in February, is a stereotype that 

daughters relate more to their 

mothers. 

“It shouldn’t be that way. 

Daughters should feel equally as 

close to their dad. Dads should 

also feel like they can connect 

with their children. 

“Having a daughter is probably 

really scary for them – they 

may not know what women go 

through.” 

The book, which will be in an 

online audio form, will highlight 

the experiences an average teen 

girl will go through like periods, 

starting high school, friendship 

conflicts, first parties, first 

relationships, first breakups, 

social media and body issues. 

The pair, who plan to get 

in touch with an editor and 

a publisher later in the year, 

have spent the last school term 

exploring what issues teenage 

girls face through an online 

survey and interviewing students 

at the school. 

Maddi said the next step will 

be to gather information and 

views from various fathers. 

“After the school holidays, we 

are going to talk with more father 

figures. 

“While we both have a good 

relationship with our dads, some 

girls are struggling to connect 

with theirs.” 

The pair completed the first 

challenge of the YES scheme/ 

competition last week, which is 

where they submitted evidence 

on validation of their product by 

taking a prototype to market. 

The next challenge for the two 

will be pitching their product. 

The one-year programme 

requires students from across 

the country to complete four 

challenges before proceeding

‘One-stop shop’ facility to open its doors 

HORNBY’S long-anticipated 

new community centre will 

finally open its doors to the public 

tomorrow. 

The city council-operated 

facility, Matatiki, includes indoor 

pools, a library, customer service 

desk, café, and courtyard area 

with a stage and outdoor seating. 

Located at 25 Smarts Rd, the 

site is a short walk from the Hub 

Hornby and Hornby High School. 

“The centre is going to be 

absolutely amazing for the community 

in Hornby and surrounding 

areas,” says council head of 

recreation, sports and events 

Nigel Cox. 

“With multiple amenities in 

one location, Matatiki will be a 

one-stop shop. Drop the kids off 

at their swimming lessons, register 

the dog, pick up a new library 

book, and grab yourself a snack at 

the café all in one visit.” 

Mayor Phil Mauger will lead 

the opening ceremony from 1pm 

tomorrow with the pool open to 

the public from 3pm. 

A community open day will 

be held on Saturday from 10am– 

4pm. 

“We have a whole range of 

activities planned, from an inflatable 

obstacle course in the pool, 

to virtual reality sessions in the 

library,” Cox said. 

Activities, entertainment and 

food vendors will also be set up in 

Kyle Park, which backs onto the 

new facility. 

BRAND NEW: The Matatiki complex opens tomorrow and features indoor pools, a library 

and café alongside other amenities. 

“The community day is 

free to attend, but if you’re 

swimming, standard pool 

entry fees apply. It’s a great 

opportunity to see everything 

that Matatiki has on 

offer,” Cox said. 

The new Hornby Library, 

which has shifted 

from its previous home on 

Goulding Ave, includes a 

creative activities space, 12 public 

computers, printing and photocopying 

facilities, as well as free 

wifi internet access. 

Acting head of Christchurch 

libraries and information Erica 

Rankin said the creative resources 

on offer open up possibilities for 

people to try something new. 

“Matatiki has an audio/video

software, and hardware 

including microphones, 

sound mixing boards and 

computers. 

“People will also be able 

to sign up for classes to 

learn their way around 

the software, so they are 

qualified to work directly with 

the technology available,” Rankin

There is also a laser cutter, 3D 

printer, sewing machines and 

overlocker, heat press, embroidery 

machine, and other resources. 

The council’s customer service 

desk is also shifting to Matatiki. 

People will be able to do things 

like get advice on council 

services, register dogs, pay rates, 

and top up Metrocards. 

There’s plenty more on offer in 

the indoor pool hall, which contains 

a lane pool, learn-to-swim 

pool, family spa pool, toddlers’ 

wet play area, and a hydrotherapy 

pool. 

The hydrotherapy pool was a 

late addition to the project, with 

the Greater Hornby Residents’ 

Association and the Rotary Club 

of Hornby leading a project to 

raise $1.4 million towards its 

construction. 

The council has approved an 

additional $2.5 million towards 

the hydrotherapy pool plan. 

“We’ve worked closely with

the way. They’ve rallied together 

to raise over $1.1 million to date, 

which is a stellar effort,” Cox said. 

Alongside major grants from 

Lotteries NZ, New Zealand Community 

Trust and Rata Foundation, 

the groups have launched a 

‘Buy a Bubble’ campaign to raise 

funds. 

The fundraiser has seen 

$50,000 worth of bubbles sold to 

community groups, businesses, 

and individuals. Each supporter 

will have their name or company 

logo featured on a sponsor’s wall 

in the facility. 

“It’s a great opportunity for 

people to show their Hornby 

pride and support a very worthwhile 

addition to the community 

facility,” Cox said.

attended a camp at Ōnuku. This 

is a great way for the children to 

get to get to know each other 

and forms the start of our NZ 

Histories programme. 

“Ōnuku marae is home to the hapū (sub-tribe) of Ngāi 

Tārewa and Ngāti Īrakehu. Our home has been the 

setting for some of the most significant and historic events 

seeded in the founding of our nation including the signing 

of the Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) by our Tīpuna 

(ancestors).”

reason for wanting to be a House Captain is so I have an opportunity to 

show myself and be a good role model to others.

What I like about Kirkwood Intermediate School is the relationship between 

students and teachers. Also, I like how the teachers have found teaching 

methods that everyone enjoys and understands. I would like to improve 

my leadership skills and be more able to help my peers by knowing what is 

happening within the school as well as knowing what students might need 

help with. Being a House Captain will give me more responsibility and will 

help me in high school. 

Harry - Broadfield Primary School 

I enjoy the sports opportunities Kirkwood has to offer. I also like the 

Blues awards you get when you work really hard. This year I would like to 

encourage others to become high achievers and try get in to as many teams 

as possible. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and I felt like being a 

House Captain would be the best way.

I like Kirkwood because there are always new things to do and learn. There 

are a lot of opportunities available from sporting, academic and leadership. 

This year I would like our students to have a productive year and I want to 

achieve my personal goals. I wanted to become a House Captain so I can 

grow and gain experience in leadership. 

Wenwen - Lincoln Primary School 

I like the single-cell classrooms, the teachers, and the way everyone is so 

friendly. I want to contribute to as many events as possible and represent our 

school well. I wanted to be a House Captain and help listen to others more, 

making it a better school community 

I enjoyed all of 

the camp, especially 

sleeping in the whare 

which was so much fun. I 

also enjoyed getting to 

know our class. 

My favourite part 

of camp was learning 

about the Māori culture 

and playing Māori 

games. The food was 

also delicious! 

My favourite part of 

camp was sailing on the 

Cansail sailing boat. We found 

it really interesting. Our group 

were given instructions then we 

were allowed to go up the front of 

the boat to help with the sails. We 

also got to steer the wheel and 

rotated the boat so we went 

in different directions

Tournament about growing love for league

to Canterbury Rugby League’s 

innovative Backyard Footy 

primary school tournament 

last week, bringing together 42 

teams from 26 schools – with 

an unprecedented 400-plus kids 

participating in partnership 

with Primary Sports 

Canterbury. 

Backyard Footy is six-a-side 

rugby league with modified 

rule to encourage high player 

involvement and exciting, freeflowing 

10-minute long games. 

“Backyard Footy is all about 

kids getting their hands on a 

rugby league ball and having 

fun,” CRL director of football 

Jamie Lester said. 

“We want the kids that already 

play rugby league to continue 

their love for the game and for 

the kids experiencing rugby 

league for the first time to create 

a love for rugby league. 

“Games are six versus six, 

played on a small field so all 

players are heavily involved, and 

games are action-packed. 

“There are no scrums, and 

minimal kicks or stoppages. 

“We don’t give out medals or 

trophies to the winners. Instead, 

we encourage a great attitude 

and your best effort. That’s 

the message from Canterbury 

Rugby League and Primary 

Sport Canterbury.”

2023 edition, this year’s tournament 

included 12 year 5 and 6 

teams, 26 sides in the year 7 and 

8 boys grade and four year 7 and 

8 girls teams, the first time all-girl 

teams have played in this agegroup. 

Schools from all corners of the 

wider Christchurch area entered 

teams, while Canterbury Rugby 

League’s burgeoning relationship 

with West Coast Rugby League 

– Greymouth Greyhounds made 

their CRL Men’s Premiership 

debut last weekend – further 

reflected by Grey Main School 

youngsters making the trip over. 

“It was so great to see so many 

kids playing around 100 games 

throughout the day at Ngā Puna 

Wai,” Lester said. 

“It was cool to have four all-girls 

teams which was a new addition 

this year. Most girls were trying 

rugby league for the first time, so 

we did a ‘how to play’ coaching 

session with them. 

“Seeing so many smiling faces 

throughout the day was truly 

rewarding,’’ he said. 

“We want to send out a big 

thank you to Primary Sports 

Canterbury for organising the 

event and to Haeata Community 

College students and our other 

volunteers for all their amazing 

work. It was a fantastic day and 

I’m already excited for the 2025 

tournament.”

matter how you put it, that’s a long stretch of 

time in anyone’s reckoning. And that’s how 

long Greg Box, owner/operator of Amazing 

Auto Electric, has been involved in the autoelectrical 

trade. 

It all started when he began as an apprentice 

with Benson Bros in Gisborne on June 24, 

1974, learning the nuts and bolts of the trade 

and acquiring the skills needed to pursue 

a successful career as an auto-electrical 

engineer. 

After spending almost seven years there, 

Greg headed overseas, and over the following 

eight years he worked in the motor trade in 

the UK, and for a large part of the time, in 

the mining industry in Alaska, Australia and 

Africa. 

Family matters brought him back to New 

Zealand, plus he was also keen to start his own 

business here. With that in mind he re-located 

to Christchurch in 1989, initially working for 

a local firm, before launching out as a sole 

trader in 1993. 

A decade later he established his current 

business, Amazing Auto Electric, opening a 

workshop in Coleridge Street and employing 

staff. 

As a business it has proved a great success, 

and while it is a challenging trade, and 

one that can be stressful, it’s a trade he has 

thoroughly enjoyed over the last 50 years. He 

says for a person that enjoys working with 

machinery and fixing things as he does, it’s an 

ideal career. 

“For an apprentice starting out it takes five 

years to qualify, but for those that can stick to 

it, it’s a great trade to be in.” 

With auto-electrical systems 

being re-designed every five to 

10 years, ongoing training with 

online and on-site courses 

is also an important part of 

keeping up in the industry,

“Many of the problems 

people have with their vehicles 

are related to the electrical 

system. When that warning 

light comes up on the dashboard, it 

indicates there’s something wrong, and we 

can fix it,” Greg says, adding, “Over the years 

we have been blessed with the best customers 

and staff any business could wish for and we 

wouldn’t be here without them.” 

Amazing Auto Electric provides service for 

all types of vehicle from trucks, to commercial 

vans to family cars. Located at 65 Coleridge 

Street, it is open 8am to 5pm Monday to 

Friday. 

And in just a few weeks’ time, Monday June 

24 will be a red-letter day for owner Greg, as 

he reaches his 50th anniversary in the trade, a 

significant milestone by any measure.
