‘You only get one dad’
• By Sasha Watson
MADDI McIVOR and Montana
Woods both have a great
relationship with their dads –
but they know it’s not like that
for every teenage daughter.
That is why the two Cashmere
High School year 13 students
are writing and producing a
book, Dadsitting, on some of
the struggles and experiences a
daughter will face as they grow
into women.
“We think a book will help
educate fathers so they can have
more of an understanding of
what their daughter is going
through, so they can become
closer with their daughters.
“You only get one dad,” said
Montana, 17, who hails from
Hillsborough.
Maddi, 18, said what they
have seen, since starting
the project in February, is a
stereotype that daughters relate
more to their mothers.
“It shouldn’t be that way.
Daughters should feel equally as
close to their dad. Dads should
also feel like they can connect
with their children.
“Having a daughter is
probably really scary for them
– they may not know what
women go through.”
The book, which will be in
an online audio form, will
highlight the experiences an
average teen girl will go through
like periods, starting high
school, friendship conflicts,
first parties, first relationships,
first breakups, social media and
body issues.
FAMILY: Cashmere High School students Montana Woods and Maddi McIvor are writing a book, Dadsitting, about
father and teenage daughter relationships, knowing while they have a good connection with theirs, others may not.
They are pictured with their dads Michael Woods and Chris McIvor.
The pair, who plan to get
in touch with an editor and
a publisher later in the year,
have spent the last school
term exploring what issues
teenage girls face through an
online survey and interviewing
students.
Maddi, who said the next step
will be to gather information
and views from various fathers.
“After the school holidays,
we are going to talk with more
father figures.
“While we both have a good
relationship with our dads,
some girls are struggling to
connect with theirs.”
The pair completed the first
challenge of the YES scheme/
competition last week, which is
where they submitted evidence
on validation of their product
by taking a prototype to
market.
The next challenge for the two
will be pitching their product.
The one-year programme
requires students from across
the country to complete four
challenges before proceeding
to the regional final, where top
teams will pitch to a panel of
judges to be selected as regional
champions.
The winning teams will then
compete in the national finals
in December for a share of more
School makes a bid for new campus
• By Dylan Smits
TE PĀ o Rākaihautū students
will travel between Linwood and
Diamond Harbour if a proposed
new campus goes ahead.
A second campus for the
Māori immersion school could
be built on 8 ha of the city
council-owned 39.02 ha block at
the junction of Hunters Rd and
Whero Ave.
Te Pā
board chair
Rangimarie
Parata Takurua
said students
would study
at the planned
new campus
Rangimarie
Parata
Takura
and the existing
Linwood site
on McLean
St (formerly
Linwood Intermediate School).
She said arrival and leaving
times would be staggered
throughout the day, as students
travelled between the campuses.
Many would go to Diamond
Harbour by bus instead of car.
“It’s not like a typical nine-tothree
drop-off plan.”
Parata Takurua said if a land
sale was approved the school
would start releasing more detail
around a transport plan.
The site was chosen to be near
Ngāti Wheke at Rāpaki marae,
who already have a close relationship
with the school.
POTENTIAL: Te Pā o Rākaihautū is looking to purchase 8 ha of a 39.04 ha block of city council-owned land in Diamond
Harbour for a second campus to complement its Linwood site.
PHOTOS: NEWSLINE, GOOGLE
But a survey shows Diamond
Harbour residents are split on
selling the city council land
to Te Pā o Rākaihautū, with
many of those opposed citing
potential increased traffic into
the area.
The survey was conducted
by the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board ahead of a meeting on
Monday.
Provisional land sale agreements
will be approved or rejected
by the community board.
“There’s quite a few people
who probably aren’t too against
the idea of the school, it’s more
we think that there hasn’t been
enough information provided,”
said Diamond Harbour Community
Association chair
Graeme Fraser.
He said it would “go down
quite badly” with people in the
community if a full traffic plan
was only released after a provisional
land sale.
“People will feel much better if
there are concrete details down
in writing.”
Fraser agreed the staggered
arrival of students would help
address traffic concerns, but
more details needed to be made
publicly available.
The survey asked if the proposed
school was a good use for
part of the land.
Of the 424 survey respondents,
168 lived in Diamond Harbour.
The rest were from outside the
area.
Views on the proposed school
were split with 50.9 per cent of
Diamond Harbour respondents
opposed, 34.9 per cent fully in
favour, 8.9 per cent somewhat in
favour, and 5.3 per cent unsure.
Fraser said some Diamond
Harbour residents could be
opposed because of the school’s
Māori focus.
“Diamond Harbour people are
a bit of a mixed bag about things
like that, like everywhere else in
New Zealand. That’s why I’d like
the school to make a stronger
case, because then I think people
like that wouldn’t have anything
to complain about.”
Parata Takarua said “there
may be those elements, but we’ve
got to focus on what the needs of
our communities are.”
The cost of implementing the
land sales or the build are not yet
known.
Six-a-side league tournament about
innovative Backyard Footy
primary school tournament
last week, bringing together 42
teams from 26 schools – with
an unprecedented 400-plus kids
participating in partnership
with Primary Sports
Canterbury.
Backyard Footy is six-a-side
rugby league with modified
rule to encourage high player
involvement and exciting, freeflowing
10-minute long games.
“Backyard Footy is all about
kids getting their hands on a
rugby league ball and having
fun,” CRL director of football
Jamie Lester said.
“We want the kids that already
play rugby league to continue
their love for the game and for
the kids experiencing rugby
league for the first time to create
a love for rugby league.
“Games are six versus six,
played on a small field so all
players are heavily involved, and
games are action-packed.
“There are no scrums, and
minimal kicks or stoppages in
play.
“We don’t give out medals or
trophies to the winners. Instead,
we encourage a great attitude
and your best effort. That’s
the message from Canterbury
Rugby League and Primary
growing love for the game
After 24 teams featured in the
2023 edition, this year’s tournament
included 12 year 5 and 6
teams, 26 sides in the year 7 and
8 boys grade and four year 7 and
8 girls teams, the first time all-girl
teams have played in this agegroup.
Schools from all corners of the
wider Christchurch area entered
teams, while Canterbury Rugby
League’s burgeoning relationship
with West Coast Rugby League
– Greymouth Greyhounds made
their CRL Men’s Premiership
debut last weekend – further
reflected by Grey Main School
youngsters making the trip over.
“It was so great to see so many
kids playing around 100 games
throughout the day at Ngā Puna
Wai,” Lester said.
“It was cool to have four all-girls
teams which was a new addition
this year. Most girls were trying
rugby league for the first time, so
we did a ‘how to play’ coaching
session with them.
“Seeing so many smiling faces
throughout the day was truly
rewarding,’’ he said.
“We want to send out a big
thank you to Primary Sports
event and to Haeata Community
Celebrating Kirkwood
House Captains for 2024
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 pupils have recently
attended a camp at Ōnuku. This
is a great way for the children to
get to get to know each other
and forms the start of our NZ
Histories programme.
“Ōnuku marae is home to the hapū (sub-tribe) of Ngāi
Tārewa and Ngāti Īrakehu. Our home has been the
setting for some of the most significant and historic events
seeded in the founding of our nation including the signing
of the Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) by our Tīpuna
(ancestors).”
Back row: (from left to right): Inian, Juliet, Fergus, Pippa, Harry, Rose,
Xander, Wenwen
House Captains for Mansfield/Hillary
Juliet - Ilam Primary School
I love the values that Kirkwood Intermediate School has and the way
Kirkwood Intermediate School has a whole range of activities that students
can take part in. I would like to encourage more activities so students can
put themselves out there and showcase their talents and interests. I wanted
to be a House Captain as I know I am a great leader and I always want to
find solutions to any issues I can.
Inian - Lincoln Primary School
I like that Kirkwood has many different opportunities and there are a lot
of leadership roles for students to develop new skills. I want to be a good
House Captain and good role model. I will also try out new sports and
achieve my academic goals. This year, I would like to encourage more
spirit within the school and encourage others to participate in the many
opportunities Kirkwood Intermediate School has to offer. I would also like to
lead my house to victory!
House Captains for Sheppard/Freyberg
Pippa - Lincoln Primary School
I enjoy Kirkwood Intermediate School for the smaller classes and the many
opportunities that the school offers. This year I would like to make sure
everyone is included and treated equally. I wanted to become a House
Captain so I could be a good role model for my peers.
Fergus - Clearview Primary School
Kirkwood Intermediate School gives you many opportunities to grow and
prove yourself which makes you become a better person. I would like to
make Sheppard/Freyberg the best house in the school and I would like to
encourage other students to try and gain a range of new experiences. My
reason for wanting to be a House Captain is so I have an opportunity to
show myself and be a good role model to others.
House Captains for Britten/Te Kanawa
Rose - Ilam Primary School
What I like about Kirkwood Intermediate School is the relationship between
students and teachers. Also, I like how the teachers have found teaching
methods that everyone enjoys and understands. I would like to improve
my leadership skills and be more able to help my peers by knowing what is
happening within the school as well as knowing what students might need
help with. Being a House Captain will give me more responsibility and will
help me in high school.
Harry - Broadfield Primary School
I enjoy the sports opportunities Kirkwood has to offer. I also like the
Blues awards you get when you work really hard. This year I would like to
encourage others to become high achievers and try get in to as many teams
as possible. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and I felt like being a
House Captain would be the best way.
House Captains for Rutherford/Batten
Xander - Clearview Primary School
I like Kirkwood because there are always new things to do and learn. There
are a lot of opportunities available from sporting, academic and leadership.
This year I would like our students to have a productive year and I want to
achieve my personal goals. I wanted to become a House Captain so I can
grow and gain experience in leadership.
Wenwen - Lincoln Primary School
I like the single-cell classrooms, the teachers, and the way everyone is so
friendly. I want to contribute to as many events as possible and represent our
school well. I wanted to be a House Captain and help listen to others more,
making it a better school community
I enjoyed all of
the camp, especially
sleeping in the whare
which was so much fun. I
also enjoyed getting to
know our class.
My favourite part
of camp was learning
about the Māori culture
and playing Māori
games. The food was
also delicious!
My favourite part of
camp was sailing on the
Cansail sailing boat. We found
it really interesting. Our group
were given instructions then we
were allowed to go up the front of
the boat to help with the sails. We
also got to steer the wheel and
rotated the boat so we went
in different directions
OPEN DAY
Piece selected for national festival
An incredibly special week starting March
26, on the water at Lake Ruataniwha with
all CHS Rowing Crew performing to a high
standard and rowing technically well across
the week.
Of the 21 crew members, each featured in a
final and 15 returned as national champions!
With more than 2100 students from 103
schools attending the championship regatta,
it saw fierce and tough racing with students
even being eliminated on Monday.
CHS on the points table
• No.1 Sculling School in NZL shared with
Wakatipu High School
• 1st Co-Ed School
• 4th overall Rowing School
Big congratulations to our students who
performed at the recent annual regional Sheilah
Winn Shakespeare Festival.
One of our five-minute pieces, taken from
Hamlet, was chosen to represent Canterbury
At the beginning of the year, we invited
our NZQA Scholarship recipients and
their parents back to Cashmere to
acknowledge their success and to
reconnect with their teachers before
they headed off to university/work.
NZQA Scholarship is the highest form
of academic achievement in school and
we are incredibly proud of their success.
Special mention to Luke McPherson
who achieved four scholarships with an
Outstanding in Statistics.
at the National Festival in Wellington, making
this the eighth year out of nine that we will be
represented at the national festival.
Thanks to Mr Ussher who has been coaching,
teaching and supporting our students.
Pasifika
We are super proud of
our Pasifika group who
performed at Polyfest on
March 16! They may have
been small in number but
they were huge in heart.
They did our school and
community proud.
Students and staff help
raise funds, awareness
for Cancer Society
On Saturday, April 6, a number of
our staff and students took part
in the "Relay for Life" event at
Lancaster Park.
This is a great community event
that involves taking turns relaystyle
walking/running around a
track in remembrance of those
who have suffered from cancer
and to celebrate with survivors.
It also raises funds for the Cancer
Society.
Thanks to all of our staff and
students who participated. A
special thanks to Ms Glading who
was instrumental in organising
our involvement. Also to Grace
Billings, Ben Loughlan, Jaimeson,
Arkless, Arthur Norman, Lucy
P Moore and Greta Prince
who walked more than a half
marathon during the 12 hours.
Pupils aid Rotary in track work
• By Barbara Crooks
EIGHT TE Aratai College
students have joined Ferrymead
Rotary to help with Christchurch
360 Trail maintenance.
“They were a willing,
enthusiastic, and hard-working
group, they were fun to be with
and keen to help” said Rotarian
Rod Tiplady, who worked with
the group.
Ferrymead Rotary has helped
fund the Positive Hauora
Resilience programme at Te
Aratai College for year 7 and 8
students.
The programme provides Life
Education NZ visits, “attitude
presentations,” and a journal
for each student to increase
self-awareness and encourage
self-belief.
This is the third year
Ferrymead Rotary has helped
fund this programme. Helping
with the 360 trail maintenance
is the students’ way of giving
back to the community.
Twice a year, Ferrymead
Rotarians walk the trail from
Ferrymead Bridge to Cowles
Stadium – the stretch the club
has been allocated to maintain.
Members and friends check
that all signs are visible, and
in place, and replace them if
necessary. As they walk, they
also collect rubbish.
Medals entrusted
to fire brigade
• By Dylan Smits
THE SERVICE medals of
the oldest surviving former
Lyttelton fire chief have been
accepted by the brigade in
recognition of his long service.
John Fogarty, 93, wanted to
display his medals at the fire
station.
He served in the brigade from
1946 to 1977 and received a
Queen’s Service Medal in 1975
for his long service to the community
and leadership of the
brigade.
“We wanted to honour him
for his service and receive his
service medals to look after
them for safekeeping,” said chief
fire officer Dwayne Pool.
Forgarty served as the brigade’s
senior station officer from
1972 until his retirement.
The role was equivalent to the
modern chief fire officer role.
Pool accepted the medals for
the brigade in a ceremony,
where Fogarty gave a presentation
on his awards with family
support.
Fogarty and his daughter
Christine had approached
Pool about permanently displaying
the medals in the station.
Other medals in the display
case include accolades for
Fogarty’s life membership, long
service and good conduct, and
awards for waterway (hose
running and pump operating)
competitions.
The case will soon hold pride
of place when it is hung at the
station.
“I hope the takeaway when
people look at it will be recognising
John’s long service and
commitment to the brigade and
community.”
Pool hopes Fogarty’s example
will encourage younger
members to stay with the
brigade for longer.
50 years in the trade a major milestone
Five decades, 50 years, half a century – no
matter how you put it, that’s a long stretch of
time in anyone’s reckoning. And that’s how
long Greg Box, owner/operator of Amazing
Auto Electric, has been involved in the autoelectrical
trade.
It all started when he began as an apprentice
with Benson Bros in Gisborne on June 24,
1974, learning the nuts and bolts of the trade
and acquiring the skills needed to pursue
a successful career as an auto-electrical
engineer.
After spending almost seven years there,
Greg headed overseas, and over the following
eight years he worked in the motor trade in
the UK, and for a large part of the time, in
the mining industry in Alaska, Australia and
Africa.
Family matters brought him back to New
Zealand, plus he was also keen to start his own
business here. With that in mind he re-located
to Christchurch in 1989, initially working for
a local firm, before launching out as a sole
trader in 1993.
A decade later he established his current
business, Amazing Auto Electric, opening a
workshop in Coleridge Street and employing
staff.
As a business it has proved a great success,
and while it is a challenging trade, and
one that can be stressful, it’s a trade he has
thoroughly enjoyed over the last 50 years. He
says for a person that enjoys working with
machinery and fixing things as he does, it’s an
ideal career.
“For an apprentice starting out it takes five
years to qualify, but for those that can stick to
it, it’s a great trade to be in.”
With auto-electrical systems
being re-designed every five to
10 years, ongoing training with
online and on-site courses
is also an important part of
keeping up in the industry,
Greg says.
He is proud of the service
Photographed
in his Coleridge
St workshop,
Greg Box is
about to mark
50 years in the
auto-electrical
trade.
Greg Box,
members
Anton Weir,
centre, and
Shane Gallop.
We have some
of the latest and
greatest scanning
tools and software
available to help
diagnose and solve
problems, nine in
total.
he and his two staff – one
fully qualified and the other
undergoing his apprenticeship,
offer customers.
“Many of the problems
people have with their vehicles
are related to the electrical
system. When that warning
light comes up on the dashboard, it
indicates there’s something wrong, and we
can fix it,” Greg says, adding, “Over the years
we have been blessed with the best customers
and staff any business could wish for and we
wouldn’t be here without them.”
Amazing Auto Electric provides service for
all types of vehicle from trucks, to commercial
vans to family cars. Located at 65 Coleridge
Street, it is open 8am to 5pm Monday to
Friday.
And in just a few weeks’ time, Monday June
24 will be a red-letter day for owner Greg, as
he reaches his 50th anniversary in the trade, a
significant milestone by any measure.
