Calling All Baby Boomers Trying to Get Up... About Downsizing Photo by Suat Gursozlu / shutterstock.com How long can bug bites itch? I too had a question the day my wife walked across our next door neighbor’s front yard to the house on the other side. She peered and ploted while I scratched and scratched. She was thinking perhaps years of, possibly decades. I was ready to dive into a vat of Benadryl. One of us was focused on what maters. She was on to something, as well. We love our house, my all-butlifelong home and hers too for nearly 40 years. It is big and old, creaky and quirky, often too hot or too cold. Quaint joys, pesky challenges, this place comes abundantly equipped with both. It has been in my family since it was built in 1861. One man’s legacy is, well, also this same man’s obligation. Generations would spin in their graves should I turn the keys over to a Smith or a Jones. Thing is, our kids are grown and on their own. Our house is now about half used. Most of the busy half is atop a winding fight of steps. One broken hip and my wife or I would be sponge-bathing in the kitchen sink. Our bedroom is up those stairs, same with the washer and the dryer, most of the closets … plus, indeed, the only shower and tub. Which is why my wife went up the street with downsizing on the brain. A one-story, nicely kept stone house sat vacant, its sweet, widowed owner having passed away. For good and for bad, this house is prety much everything ours is not. There would be less grass to cut, fewer foors to vacuum, a relative pitance to owe to this utility and to that tax collector. Climbing steps routinely would become a fading memory. There, we could grow older easier and maybe longer. We could thumb our noses at the nursing home beter. Meanwhile, our staircase seems to grow like the proverbial beanstalk. Our friends, more than one, do not merely consider downsizing. They downsize. They rave about it. They wish they would have done it years ago. No way we could go without someone near and dear to us coming. Both kids, already nearby, would beneft from our larger home, where they grew up. One or another could carry on tradition. But are both ready to upsize? Is either? These are questions I had put of asking. With only We do a little less, buy a little less, expect a little less. Less really is more. That’s downsizing, right? children - as I was, and my mom - succession planning is as foolproof as microwave popcorn. I gratefully had no choice but to step up. I would hate for either of our kids to feel burdened. Beter to have to fip a coin, if need be, than to twist an arm. My wife returned from her visit and was eager to sign papers right then and there. I tried to be the voice of reason, the constructive skeptic. Like that ever works. We could remain close, she explained. We could live somewhere else without living somewhere else. Can we aford it, I wondered aloud. Can we not aford it, she fred back. Maybe it was delirium from itching. My wife sounded right, though, right down the line. My feeble mind nonetheless spun just thinking about moving, be it two houses away or across the world. It takes me an afternoon to rearrange paper clips in my desk. How would I ever round up and haul 60 years of stuf. My wife rolled on as does the Ohio River out front. There would be a wall or two to tear out or bookcases to put in, or both. We would need to fence in the back, to spruce up the front. I blessedly get away with being the least handy guy in town. Hardware stores thrive just on my wife, however. She has put as much into our home as had anyone before. She always has been up to something. And our big, old house invariably ofers opportunity after opportunity. My wife watches HGTV as if it is the only channel, not one of 800. For her, fxer-upper is the furthest thing from a four-leter word. My wife is as up for this downsizing as Michael Jordan was for another spectacular dunk. Whatever mark we are to leave, we prety much already have left it. We are happy has-beens. We actually may move later, not sooner. We already simplify, however we can, when we can. We do a litle less, buy a litle less, expect a litle less. Less really is more. That’s downsizing, right? The future is less scary whenever I plan for it, accept it. Let me pray we live long enough really to need to move.
