Title: Boosting creativity in the classroom
Abstract: This diploma paper presents theoretical starting points for boosting creativity
in the classroom. A starting point is based on an assumption that in order to effectively
boost creativity, it (together with the characteristics of creative thinking) first has to be
well defined. Further on it explains the environmental effects on the development of
creativity in an individual, which include the effects of the wider social environment,
the school and the family. The main emphasis of the paper however, is on analyzing the
important factors within the school, which determine the success of boosting creativity
in the classroom. This includes clarifying the importance of evaluation, the role of the
teacher and the student as well as the factors in a student. An important emphasis is
given to the summed up display of guidelines for developing creativity in students that
the teachers can follow to ensure the effectiveness of boosting creativity in the
classroom.
The empirical part comprises a case study presenting the view of both teachers and
students on boosting creativity in the last three grades of the selected high school. A
comparison of the different viewpoints of the protagonists in the classroom is seen as
key for determining the efficiency of the teachers' efforts in boosting creativity in the
classroom. Based on the case study boosting creativity in the classroom cannot be
depreciated. However a few defects were discovered, the main one being the narrow-
mindedness of both teachers and students regarding the subject of creativity itself.
Key concepts: creativity, creative thinking, environmental effects, boosting creativity,
importance of evaluation, role of the teacher, role of the student
