AEye How it started: When we first heard of the competition during assembly, we were extremely excited. The school had never had anything similar. Beforehand, we already had a little experience with programming, making simple command-line games for fun. During the duration of this competition, our primary coding language was Python. We researched new Python libraries and functions. We learned about datasets for machine learning, how to train neural networks, and use them to detect basic objects. Furthermore, we learned that planning and communication were very important in this competition. With the extremely tight time frame of only 2 days to get a lot done, we had to work out what we would do for each day to make everything complete and ready for our presentation to the judges. The most useful support that we received during the event was from our parents, as they were the most encouraging. However, the mentors we received were also extremely helpful, as they gave us many tips for teamwork and encouraged us with kind words. The most challenging part of the entire project was researching the topic of machine learning, this was all tremendously hard to understand. The most exciting part was the fact that we had never participated in such an event before. We were extremely grateful that our school was making efforts to help students achieve more goals in the field of technology and allow them to use their abilities and knowledge outside of school. We thought the guest speakers were really professional, and we are grateful that they took their time to help and share their knowledge with us. Not only that, but we would definitely join next year, as it is a very rare opportunity for us to put our skills and interests to good use. We strongly hope for a Hackathon next year, and we hope the topic could be even more interesting than this year’s event. Our project: Our project is called AEye. The reason for this name is because of its inclusion of artificial intelligence, as well as the fact that it is an artificial eye for the visually impaired. It is a small product that requires no internet connection that is able to help visually impaired people read words or objects out loud. For example, if they were reading a book, all they would need to do would be to click a button, and our product would be able to read the text aloud for them. Our language of choice was Python. Our initial plan was to host the code on a Raspberry Pi, a microcomputer. Next, a connected GoPro would scan the surroundings to look for text or images to read for the user. However, since we only have two days for the hackathon, we were only able to test it out on a computer. Our project currently can only recognize English words and read them aloud. It is near perfect for typed letters, but still needs work on handwritten words. Unfortunately, we were not able to incorporate object recognition during the span of the competition, however, we have already gotten it working over the summer. Page 22
Our work over the summer: During the summer, we have continued to work on our project with support from the school as well as one of the mentors: Mr. Wai Fung Leung, the founder, and CEO of Artemis Education Technology LTD. After over a month of work, we have managed to make a number of features functional. Such as object r e c o g n i t i o n , b e t t e r t e x t recognition, are all usable. However, improvements are still being made, and we are working on filtering images for better clarity as well as training the neural network. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Founding Principal Lau, Mr. Louis Wong, Mr. Wai Fung Leung, Mrs. Linda Sze, and Ms. Yoki Li for their support, encouragement, opportunity, and guidance.
