tonight’s clash with Hull FC.

I would like to welcome our visitors from 

East Yorkshire. Hull have had a tough time 

of it recently but I feel that they’re putting 

a lot of energy into games. Whilst ever 

teams are playing with a lot of energy and 

they’re trying really hard, things can turn. 

It’s our job to make things difficult for 

them and at least match them for energy. 

In round two, we let ourselves down in 

a few areas. Defensively we lacked a bit 

of connection on a few occasions and 

their willingness to play when they see 

an opportunity is a hallmark of any side 

coached by Tony Smith. They created a few 

more opportunities than we would have 

liked and they were able to execute them so 

that was the biggest thing we could learn 

out of that game. We had them under some 

pressure early in the game and didn’t take 

our chances. That game feels like a long 

time ago so it’s a new one on Friday night. 

Looking back to last Sunday’s match, 

I thought it was a good hard game 

that could have gone either way in 

the end but I thought we always 

had a good chance of winning. 

I am looking forward to seeing our Reserves 

back in action against a strong Hull FC 

in tonight’s curtain raiser. We have got 

a bunch of players that haven’t been 

selected in recent times that are ready to 

play so that’s a good position to be in. I’m 

happy with the contribution of everyone 

that has played this year. We’re trying to 

find the best mix each week but trying 

to keep our squad healthy and match-fit 

so tonight is a good opportunity to have 

a look at everyone on the same night. 

Likewise, the lads who have been at 

Bradford on dual registration have gone 

really well. Sam Walters, Luis Roberts 

and James Donaldson both performed 

really well on Monday. It’s a good position 

for the club to be in where you’ve got 

players that are genuine Super League 

players getting extra game time. 

Finally, I would like to congratulate Ash 

Handley, Harry Newman, Mikolaj Oledzki, 

Tom Holroyd and Morgan Gannon on 

their call ups to the England squad to 

face France including Justin Sangare.

ACTION PACKED WEEKEND FOR RHINOS TEAMS 

Another big weekend sees Rhinos sides in 

action across the next two days. 

RHINOS NETBALL V 

SARACENS MAVERICKS 

Leeds Rhinos Netball return 

to the first direct Arena in 

Leeds on 16th April to play 

Saracens Mavericks in the 

Netball Super League. 

The Netball will begin at 4pm 

and there will be plenty of fun 

for all the family around the 

arena before the game. There 

will be a DJ set from Mystikle 

Blue, who was a huge hit at 

last year’s Commonwealth 

Games. On the concourse 

there will be a Netball Pong 

game, a chance to meet 

the players, face painters, 

balloon modellers, buskers 

and at half time there will 

be a shooting competition, 

sponsored by Green Flag. 

Players and staff from 

across the Rhinos family will 

be attending the fixture, 

including head coach Rohan 

Smith, players from every 

team including Mikolaj 

Oledzki, Ash Handley, Blake 

Austin, Amy Hardcastle 

and Keara Bennett.

University, kick off 12pm.

matches has seen James 

Simpson’s side go straight 

to the top of the league 

rankings, but Saturday’s 

opponents London, who 

are coached by World 

Cup winning coach Tom 

Coyd, recorded a convincing 

64-42 result last time out 

against Hull FC. Watch

PDRL FESTIVAL 

Saturday also sees the 

reigning PDRL Grand 

Final champions Leeds 

Rhinos host its first 

home festival of 2023. 

Held at Kippax Welfare

the PDRL side will take 

on Warrington Wolves 

(KO 2.20pm) and Hull 

KR (KO 4.20pm) as part 

of a special festival that 

cannot be missed.

Last Sunday, Nene Macdonald produced a phenomenal 

performance against Huddersfield especially considering 

he came into the game having fasted the whole day during 

Ramadan. We caught up with him this week to talk about 

his faith and how much he is enjoying life at the Rhinos... 

Q. It was a great win against 

Huddersfield last time 

out, how did you find it? 

A. It was a tough game. We 

were getting in the swing 

of things in the first half 

but we came out flying 

in the second half and 

we got the job done. 

Q. We let Huddersfield get 

out to that twelve-point 

lead in the first half, what 

was the talk like from 

the boys at that stage? 

A. I think we just started 

a bit slow. We were 

confident within ourselves 

that we were going to 

come back and we got 

the job done. We’ve 

got a good team but 

we’ve got to work on 

starting off a bit faster. 

Q. You missed the previous 

week against Hull KR, 

were you putting pressure 

on yourself to come 

out and lift the boys? 

A. I was excited to get back 

out on the field, especially 

at home in front of the 

home crowd. It always 

gives us that extra lift and 

when I got out there, I just 

felt so alive and couldn’t 

wait to rip in for the boys. 

Q. Even after the sin-binning, 

like against Catalans, 

we seemed to find our 

stride. Can you put your 

finger on why we can pick 

ourselves up even with 

twelve on the field? 

A. We just know as a team 

that when we are down, 

we really put the effort in

see how close we are 

and how we’ve come 

along off the field so 

that when we’re down 

a man on the field, we 

pull together and we 

end up playing better. 

It is strange but it’s 

good that we do. 

Q. Rohan said after the 

match that we needed 

a game like that, 

would you agree? 

A. We definitely needed a 

game like that. It could 

have gone either way 

if they had kicked the 

goal and then we’d have 

been having to try and 

chase points. We held 

together, everyone put in 

that effort but you could 

see that both teams 

were struggling with 

the game flow. It was a 

tough game at the end 

but we held strong, got 

to job done and showed 

what we’re made of. 

Q. Over 200 metres in the 

game so another big 

effort from yourself 

A. I could see a lot of the 

boys doing hard work 

in the front rows and I 

thought I’d put my hand 

up and take as many 

runs as a could to take 

that load off so we 

could flow as a team. 

Q. With it being Ramadan, 

you’re currently fasting. 

What preparations did 

you have to make for 

the game because of 

the 6pm kick off time? 

A. I was at the back end of 

my fast but I’ve got to 

give a big shout-out to 

the physio department. 

The team gave me some 

instructions on what 

to eat and as I’ve put 

a lot of effort into my 

calf injury, they knew 

I was going to be low 

on hydration so they 

gave me a few tips on 

what to eat. Thanks to 

Rich Hunwicks and the 

team for respecting my 

beliefs and helping me 

get to the best of my 

ability for the game. 

Q. When did you last 

eat before the game 

on Sunday? 

A. Fast started at 4.47am 

so at around 4.30am 

we had our meal and 

then rested up for that. 

Q. In terms of your 

preparation, is it 

something that you’ve 

been used to over the 

years to make sure 

you’re ready for games? 

A. I converted just over 

three years ago so it 

is something I have 

learned about since 

then. The tough thing 

over here compared to 

back home is that there 

are more daylight hours. 

The sun comes up a bit 

earlier here and goes 

down later compared to 

Australia so we’ve got 

another two or three 

hours on top of the fast. 

It’s been challenging 

but it’s been good. 

Q. Hull FC this week, we’ve 

already played them 

once and narrowly lost. 

Are we looking to turn 

that one around? 

A. I’m excited to play them 

again. That’s the beauty 

of our game because we 

get another chance to 

get them back. I think 

we’re going to come out 

flying and it’s going to 

be a good game from us. 

Q. Back at home at 

Headingley, how 

much are you enjoying 

the Leeds crowd? 

A. I’m loving it. I just wish 

that Super League 

would let us play every 

game there! Y

ROBINSON PROUD TO REACH 50 

GAMES FOR THE RHINOS 


Five players made their 

Rhinos Women’s debuts 

in last weekend’s season 

opener, but there was 

also reason to celebrate 

for two of the team’s 

longest-serving players 

who notched up their 

50th game for the club. 

Sophie Robinson and 

Sophie Nuttall both 

marked their half-century 

of appearances against 

York Valkyrie at Headingley. 

For Robinson, who made 

her debut in the club’s 

first-ever game in 2018, 

she said the achievement 

wasn’t something that 

she was expecting. 

“I was a little surprised when 

they said it was my 50th 

club appearance as I didn’t 

think I had played that many 

games,” she said. “It’s a big 

achievement, I love playing 

for this club so I was pleased 

to reach that milestone. 

“It was great to have Jamie 

Peacock come into the 

changing rooms before 

the game to present the 

girls with their first shirts 

and also to me and Sophie 

Nuttall too. It’s nice to 

see the Rhinos family 

supporting us. A lot of 

us girls have looked up 

to those players growing 

up so to know that they 

have well wishes for us 

is special. We appreciate 

them coming down.”

Last week’s match against 

York was an early repeat 

of the 2022 Grand Final, 

but this time it was the 

Rhinos who were unable 

to secure the victory. 

“We were disappointed with 

the game,” said the former 

Stanningley player. “I don’t 

think we put on our best 

performance, but it was our 

first game of the season 

so we know we have got 

things to fix up on now. We 

are going to work hard on 

those things before our next 

game against Huddersfield. 

“I think Huddersfield will 

definitely have improved 

from last year and we won’t 

underestimate them. We 

have just to go out and 

put a performance on and 

show how hard we have 

been training and what we 

have been working on.” 

A record crowd for a 

Women’s Super League 

game of 5,308 watched 

Easter Sunday’s fixture at 

Headingley and Robinson 

said it is pleasing to see how 

more people are turning 

out to support them. 

“It was an amazing day and 

atmosphere on Sunday,” 

she said. “I think it shows 

how much the game has 

progressed. On the back of 

the World Cup, there is a lot 

of interest in the Women’s 

game, but the Leeds fans 

have always supported us 

and that is increasing. 

“We love the South Stand 

and them getting behind 

our team is important to 

us as they help lift us. 

“On Sunday girls were 

there asking for our 

pictures and singing a 

song that they had made 

up for the team. It’s nice 

that they are looking up 

to us and know now that 

they can work towards 

playing for Leeds Rhinos. 

Young girls can now look 

to players on our team 

as role models and I think 

looking back in probably 

ten years we will see that 

we have made a difference 

to the Women’s game.” Y

A chance to recognize those who became South Stand heroes for their memorable 

exploits in blue and amber no matter their length of service. 

MARCUS BAI 

Few can put on their playing CV winning 

Grand Finals in both hemispheres. 

Winger Marcus Bai is one, claiming an 

NRL premiership ring with Melbourne 

in 1999 and repeating the feat in Super 

League for the Rhinos in 2004. 

Immensely powerful, he immediately 

endeared himself to the South Stand 

on his debut that season, scoring a hat 

trick against London Broncos, repeating 

the feat against Wigan in the final 

eliminator. Born in Ulamona in Papua 

New Guinea, for whom he played in the 

1995 and 2000 World Cups, he is still 

revered in the country where he currently 

helps promote junior participation as 

part of his work for a mining company. 

He started his professional career at 

Hull, signing in ’97 from Port Moresby 

Vipers and making eight appearances. 

He spent the following season with Gold 

Coast Chargers, moving to the Storm 

when they entered the competition 

the year after. In almost 150 games 

for them, he scored a try every other 

appearance, including in their 2000 

World Club Challenge win over St 

Helens. His two seasons at Leeds saw 

him cross 45 times in 63 appearances 

which included playing in the 2005 

World Club Challenge at Elland 

Road when he notably met Sonny Bill 

Williams, and in the Challenge Cup final 

in Cardiff against Hull. Had the Rhinos 

held on to win that game, he would 

have had the even rarer distinction of 

having won every major medal in the 

game on both sides of the globe. 

He moved to Bradford, scoring again 

in a World Club Challenge clash as the 

Bulls beat Wests, before retiring in 2006.

No one was more surprised 

to sign a professional 

contract than former, 

renowned Springbok 

international winger Wilf 

Rosenberg, in fact he was 

away on honeymoon when 

his father, a rabbi, signed a 

record contract in 1959 for 

his son who’d never heard 

of a place called Leeds. 

However, he etched his 

name into Headingley 

folklore as one of the 

glorious band who 

brought home the first 

Championship title in 1961 

at Odsal, playing outside 

Derek Hallas. Of all the 73 

touchdowns he scored, in 

only 81 appearances, the one 

that stands out the most is 

his 50 metre match winner 

in the semi final against 

St Helens, set up by a 

reverse pass from his great 

friend, diving spectacularly 

over Austin Rhodes to 

live up to his nickname 

of the ‘flying dentist’, a 

profession he studied and 

practised in the city. 

Arriving as a centre, his 

switch to the wing was 

revelatory and he smashed 

the Headingley post-war 

try scoring records. That 

particular Headingley 

special, his second of the 

game, was to be the last he 

scored in blue and amber. 

Sustaining a broken jaw 

early on the following 

season, he was not keen to 

regain form in the ‘A’ team 

and joined Hull where he 

ended his playing days. 

He was similarly lauded 

by the black and white’s, 

scoring 42 times in 86 

appearances in his two 

seasons at the Boulevard.

On this day in years gone by, Leeds have 

met the black and white side of Hull twice 

and taken on St Helens for a place in the 

Challenge Cup Final. 

1995 

LEEDS 44 HULL 19 

Leeds comfortably beat Hull to record 

their fourth consecutive win in a row in 

1995. Back rower Adrian Morley made his 

debut for the club, but it was Jim Fallon 

who stole the headlines with a three-try 

performance. Francis Cummins added

Leeds bowed out of the 2002 Challenge 

Cup against a red hot St Helens side. The 

Red Vee raced into a 26-6 lead in the first 

half, with Mark Calderwood providing 

Leeds’ sole reply. There was a chance for 

the Rhinos to cut the deficit, but Marcus 

St Hilaire was pushed over the sidelines 

as he was poised to score a minute 

before the break. Ben Walker and Willie 

Poching got two tries back for the Rhinos 

late on, but it was Saints that set up a 

meeting with Wigan in the final.

In 2017, Leeds travelled

Despite two periods of golden point extra 

time, nothing could split Leeds Rhinos 

and Huddersfield Giants at Headingley 

Stadium as the two sides shared the 

league points in a 20-20 draw. Liam 

Sutcliffe, Rhyse Martin and Morgan 

Gannon were the try scorers on that day, 

but a late comeback from the Giants 

made sure the sides took a point each.

Hull FC, we are rewinding 

the clock to 2002… 

Leeds Rhinos bounced back 

into form with a 52-10 win 

over Hull at Headingley, ending 

their nine-match slump in style 

with a comprehensive win. 

The Rhinos had won only three of 

their nine matches since a 38-16 

defeat of Hull to round off their 

perfect May, and lost their fourth 

place to the Airlie Birds after 

a defeat to Wigan last week. 

However, they moved back 

above their visitors on points 

difference and gained a crucial 

confidence boost going into 

the final five matches with 

a fine display. They blew Hull 

away in a fantastic opening 40 

minutes, and went ahead in only 

the second minute, when Mark 

Calderwood finished off a good 

move, Ben Walker converting. 

Francis Cummins sent Keith 

Senior striding in on nine minutes 

and opposite centre Tonie Carroll 

powered his way over before 

the quarter mark, plus Matt 

Adamson then crashed in to put 

Leeds further ahead, Walker 

adding a third goal and make the 

scoreline 22-0 after 21 minutes.

Karl Pratt added the fifth try 

when he touched down Ryan 

Sheridan’s kick after the halfhour 

mark, and Cummins’ try 

minutes later gave the home 

side a 32-0 interval lead. 

Hull used the break to regather 

themselves, and former Leeds 

winger Gareth Raynor had a 

try ruled out for 

double movement 

after the restart 

as they looked to 

get off the mark. 

As Hull pressed, 

Leeds hit back 

with a breakaway 

try, Kevin Sinfield 

taking a Lee 

Jackson kick 

and sending 

long-striding 

winger Calderwood the length 

of the field, Walker’s goal 

creating a 38-point advantage. 

Substitute Paul Cooke scored in 

the corner to finally get Hull off 

the mark, and Jackson added a 

try against his former club soon 

afterwards, but the reply was 

already too late. Walker kicked a 

penalty before Jamie Jones- 

Buchanan dived in to open up a 

46-10 lead. Fellow substitute Rob 

Burrow created a deserved try 

for Walker with seven minutes 

remaining, and the stand off 

added the goal to reach 20 

points for the game and push 

Leeds past the half-century. 

What happened next? 

The Rhinos finished the season 

strongly to claim a spot in 

the play-offs and went on to 

defeat Hull again at home 

in the first round of the post 

season; Keith Senior scoring a 

hat trick. A week later, Leeds’ 

season came to a close at the 

DW Stadium as Wigan recorded 

a 41-18 result to keep their 

Grand Final dreams alive.

HULL FC 

SEASON SO FAR 

Two wins at the start, including a 22-18 

triumph here in round two, meant the 

season started with optimism for the black 

and white’s under new head coach Tony 

Smith. Since then, they have suffered six 

straight defeats, the last a painful one at 

home in the Hull derby, Rovers running out 

40-0 winners, only the second time a side 

has been nilled in the fixture in the Super 

League era. To further add to their woes, 

there were injuries to Australian half back 

Jake Clifford (ankle), Fijian international 

Mitieli Vulikijapani (ankle) – who was named 

on the bench for his first appearance of 

the season – and veteran full back Jamie 

Shaul (calf), also on his first start of the 

campaign. Former Newcastle Knight, Tex 

Hoy, brought in at the back this season, 

is also currently out after suffering a 

hamstring injury against Warrington the 

week before, whilst Jake Trueman is yet to 

be available as he recovers from an ACL 

tear suffered whilst still with Castleford. In 

addition, Kane Evans (dangerous contact) 

and Vulikijapani (dangerous throw) were 

charged with Grade B and C offences 

respectively and received one-match penalty 

notices from the RFL's Match Review Panel. 

Smith described the Good Friday mauling 

as a “major disappointment,” saying: 

“We were downhearted and downbeat, 

particularly that second half. In the first 

we were much more competitive. We 

conceded a couple of tries from kicks, and 

they can do that to you. In the second half 

there was lots between the two teams 

in terms of sharpness and execution.”

THE COACH – 

With a long and distinguished coaching 

career in the game and success wherever he 

has been, not least with the Rhinos, there is 

little Tony Smith hasn’t seen or experienced 

and he was characteristically honest and 

phlegmatic about his side’s home defeat in 

last week’s derby. “We weren't good enough. 

We need to hurt from that. We need to 

take it away and rectify it,” he commented. 

“We need to get confidence from working 

hard and training hard. We suffered some 

changes in the team as the game went on 

and the injuries we had. When you’re good 

enough, you overcome that.” He admitted 

that the deficiencies will not be immediately 

rectified. “We’re not there yet, as a club 

and as a team. We have to get through 

those situations. We’re not good enough for 

that at the moment. We’re way off being 

the dominant team for long periods. We 

need to be more effective in our attack. 

We keep apologising [to our fans] for our 

performances, but there’s nothing else we 

can do. Hopefully we can repay them sooner 

rather than later for their faith.” 


LEADER – 

Selected as captain this season, the first 

from overseas for a decade and only the 

third New Zealander after Dane O’Hara 

and Richard Swain, former Junior Kiwi 

Carlos Tuimavave can cover any of the 

back roles. He joined the club in 2016 

and has made over 150 appearances, 

being voted Player of the Year in 2020. 

He was selected as skipper, “for his 

unquestionable leadership qualities 

which have been on display throughout 

the club’s pre-season campaign, and in 

previous seasons” said his coach of the 

decision. “I was a little bit surprised when 

I was told the news, but at the same 

time I’m filled with excitement for the 

opportunity,” Tuimavave noted. “I like to 

think I lead by example, whether that be 

during a game, on the training field, or 

away from the field. I try to be a calming 

influence to the rest of the playing group.”


STAR MAN – 

Liligiifo ‘Ligi’ Sao played five 

times for Samoa as they became 

the first Pacific nation to make a 

World Cup final, against Australia 

last autumn. The powerful back 

rower or prop scored a try in the 

semi-final against England at the 

Emirates and also played against 

Greece, France, and Tonga, having 

replaced Luciano Leilua. He joined 

FC in 2020, having played for New 

Zealand Warriors in two stints, the 

first as a junior in their successful 

U20s side, and Manly, making just 

under 50 appearances in the NRL. 

"I'm grateful I took the opportunity 

with two hands and represented my 

heritage at Old Trafford,” he said 

of the World Cup decider. “To make 

history for our country is something 

I'm very proud of. My next job is to 

put Hull in a good position to be at 

Old Trafford.“ The 30-year-old also 

played for the Combined Nations 

All Stars last year. 

RISING STAR – 

Signed from junior club Beverley 

Braves, teenage winger Harvey 

Barron could have had a career in 

football, having been on the books 

of Scunthorpe United. Part of the 

England Academy pathway, he was 

one of several youngsters called up 

to train with the FC first-team squad 

in 2021. He made his full debut and 

scored in a victory over Toulouse in 

July 2022, before going on to make 

three more appearances towards the 

end of last season, which included a 

further two tries against Olympique 

in the return fixture. “It's just trying 

to get a game, to get the minutes in 

and to get a spot in the first team,” 

he said of his aspirations. “Tony's 

giving us a chance to do that, as we 

saw in Davy Litten. He killed it for the 

reserves and got his chance. We're all 

trying to replicate that, push on, and 

work to get the minutes.”

DOWN THE DECADES... 1933 

In the early stages of what was to become 

the first ‘golden era’ for the club, Leeds had 

more success in cup ties than they did in the 

league programme, which stuttered to a 

tenth placed finish. 

From not winning the Yorkshire Cup until 

1921, the Loiners had captured it again in 

1928 and ’30 and did so again, conceding 

only one try in the process. That was in the 

opening round at home to Dewsbury, but 

scores from international winger Stan Smith 

back from the 1932 tour, prop David Jenkins 

– who had been signed from Hunslet at the 

start of the season – and Bob Smith saw 

the blue and amber home 13-5. 

Bob Smith was the only try scorer in round 

two as York were beaten 7-0 at Clarence 

Street, the Wednesday evening attendance 

of 14,322 a record for the ground. One try 

from ‘Toowoomba Ghost’ Eric Harris, on his 

way to a seasonal tally of 55, and three Joe 

Thompson goals were enough to take care 

of Castleford at Headingley in the semi final, 

meaning Leeds faced Wakefield at Fartown 

in the decider. 

More than 17,500 fans saw Jeff Moores 

star, scoring the only two tries of the game 

to go with a Thompson goal as Leeds 

triumphed 8-0. His feat was even more 

remarkable when it was later revealed 

that the Australian had suffered an early 

concussion, causing him to collapse at 

the civic reception after the game. There 

was transfer controversy in the lead up to 

the Challenge Cup with Les ‘Juicy’ Adams 

allowed to move to Huddersfield, but hopes 

were high, Leeds the holders after defeating 

Swinton at Wigan the previous year in ‘the 

final that Wembley forgot.’ 

The Loiners were even more determined to 

get to the national stadium for the first time 

and easily saw off Wigan Highfield 36-0 in 

the opening round, Harris with three of their 

eight tries. Salford were heroically beaten 

at the Weaste in a try-less performance, 

Thompson’s two goals despite a strong 

cross wind just enough to edge out the hosts 

4-3 and, in the third round, Hull were seen 

off 12-0 at Headingley thanks to a Harris 

brace. In the run up to the semi final with 

Huddersfield at Belle Vue, Leeds suffered a 

blow when Moores presented the club with 

a bill for fixing a badly broken nose following 

the Hull tie which the club refused to pay, 

and he went into dispute, subsequently 

being transferred to York. 

Stan Smith was unfit and centre William 

Morgan – signed from Dewsbury before 

the deadline – went off after a quarter of 

the game. With little potency, Huddersfield 

ran riot, winning 30-8 and they went on to 

overcome Warrington in the final.

GREAT FIRST QUARTER FOR OUR 

RUGBY LEAGUE DEVELOPMENT WORK 


In the first three months 

of this year, Leeds Rhinos 

Foundation has worked with 

hundreds of young players as 

well as coaches to support 

the community game, under 

the banner of its Rugby 

League Development Plan. 

Since January, 95 children 

have attended Leeds Rhinos 

Foundation’s Taster Sessions 

at community clubs around 

the city. These sessions allow 

young and aspiring rugby 

players to come along and 

get a taste for the game, in 

a fun and safe environment. 

Not only does it give them 

the opportunity to learn the 

basics, it also gives them 

a chance to make new 

friends. This plays a huge 

role in children joining their 

local clubs, making that 

leap that little bit easier. 

The new-look player Talent 

Pathway development 

programme, which is linked 

to the RFL’s England Talent 

Pathway initiative, aims 

to increase the number of 

quality Rugby League players 

aged between 12 and 16 and 

is the driving force behind 

providing a clear pathway 

from the grassroots game 

into Scholarship, Academy 

rugby and beyond. Since the 

beginning of the quarter a 

record number of players 

attended Rhinos Talent 

Pathway sessions, with 300 

boys and 150 girls in years 7-11. 

Schools throughout Leeds do 

a fantastic job to develop and 

promote Rugby League and 

this work is proudly supported 

by Leeds Rhinos Foundation, 

who recognise the contribution 

that school rugby plays in 

the pathway to creating the 

next generation of players. 

A prime example of this is the 

competitions run throughout 

the academic year, including 

the Leeds and Hunslet 

Schools RL Cup Finals, the 

Rhinos 9’s Tournament and 

indoor touch festivals. Since 

January, 200 primary school 

children have taken part in 

competitions and a further 

533 players have participated 

at High school level. 

Throughout the first quarter 

of the year, Leeds Rhinos 

Foundation has run an array 

of workshops for community 

coaches and volunteers. The 

workshops are led by qualified 

Rugby League coaches from 

Leeds Rhinos and Leeds 

Rhinos Foundation alongside 

special guests, invited to 

share their expertise. 

The workshops are free to 

attend and are designed 

using feedback from the 

community game, with the 

aim of supporting club and 

school coaches and volunteers 

with their needs. So far 110 

community club coaches and 

80 volunteers have taken 

part in the workshops. 

The next coaching workshop 

takes place on 17th April at 

Headingley Stadium and will 

be hosted by Leeds Rhinos 

Head Coach, Rohan Smith. 

The workshop will give 

coaches the chance to think 

about their own coaching 

philosophy and how this 

fits in their environment.

FORMER PLAYER GRATEFUL TO 

BE DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION 


It is not unusual for former 

Rugby League players to 

move into the coaching 

side of the game and this 

season has seen a familiar 

face return to the Academy 

coaching team. Former 

Rhinos Academy player Tom 

Schofield, who represent 

the club eight years ago, 

has returmed to help 

develop the next generation 

of Rhinos players. 

Schofield came through the 

Rhinos pathway alongside 

the likes of first-team stars 

Mikolaj Oledzki, Cameron 

Smith and Harry Newman, 

but after transitioning to 

focus on the coaching side 

of the game, he is now 

back at his hometown club 

as part of Tony Smith’s 

Academy staff. 

Speaking about wearing 

the Rhinos badge again, he 

said: “I feel really grateful 

to be honest and fortunate 

the club has given me this 

type of opportunity. I’m 

relatively young in terms of 

the coaching game so I'm 

pleased that I have been 

given the chance to develop 

under the coaching staff at 

the Rhinos. There’s no better 

environment for me.” 

“It’s been a different 

challenge, but one that I’ve 

been really looking forward 

to. I’ve just jumped straight 

in there and had a real good 

dig at it. It’s good to be back 

too. It’s a great place to be.” 

Schofield worked with 

Smith at Castleford when 

the current Academy Head 

Coach headed up the Tigers' 

Development Pathway. 

“I’ve known Tony a fair while. 

The first team coaches 

have also been great. Chev 

Walker and Rohan have 

been really helpful too by 

jumping in and giving me 

pointers. There’s plenty of 

people here that are helping 

me out and I feel like I’m 

improving. 

“I’m just leading on 

my experience. I know 

the standards and the 

expectations and what it 

takes to make the first grade 

at a club like this, the biggest 

club in Super League. I’m 

really enjoying the challenge 

of bringing what I know and 

then trying to implement 

that into my coaching with 

the guys. It’s only six or seven 

years ago that I was them 

and absorbing it all.” Y

BURROW LEEDS MARATHON 

CONFIRMED 


Run For All are delighted 

to announce that the Rob 

Burrow Leeds Marathon, in 

partnership with Clarion, 

will return to the city on 

Sunday 12 May 2024 to 

once again honour a true 

Leeds Rhinos great. 

Record-breaking numbers 

have entered this year’s Rob 

Burrow Leeds Marathon; a 

run for everyone, with over 

12,000 runners now signed 

up to take part. Attracting 

runners of all abilities and 

ages, this year’s event 

will welcome thousands 

of first-time marathon 

runners, with over half of 

entries taken up by those 

who are new to 26.2 miles. 

Next year’s marathon 

will again aim to drive 

awareness and funds for 

the two main partner 

charities; the Leeds 

Hospitals Charity and MND 

Association. However, it 

is recognised that each 

runner will have their own 

reason or goal for taking 

part and participants are 

encouraged to fundraise for 

their own charity of choice. 

The route for next 

year’s marathon will be 

announced in due course. 

Rob Burrow MBE said: “I 

am truly honoured that 

the marathon will be 

returning again next year in 

my name. Leeds is such a 

wonderful city and I am so 

grateful for all the support 

the city has shown not 

just for me and my family, 

but for the event and the 

entire MND community. 

“Knowing that we will have 

another opportunity to 

raise awareness and funds 

to fight MND, as well as a 

number of other charities 

personal to thousands 

of other runners is just 

a fantastic feeling. 

“Good luck to everyone 

who signs up and thank you 

again for all your support.”

am delighted that the Rob
