Letters to the Editor
Three years ago, on national Election Day, 27 April, the Congress of the People lost one of
our loved ones when Gerald Yona was shot dead at his home in Motherwell. Since then, the
Yona family, and we with them, have carried a heavy burden of grief on our hearts. Our souls
have refused to be still. Our spirits have sunk under the unbearable weight of an unexpected
shock.
Silent tears of despair have watered our cheeks and our motherland. The mournful cries
of the bereaved continue to echo within us within our innermost being. Three years have
passed but nothing has happened to dull the pain.
We have said our last farewells and turned back on a grave of a patriot. Health-giving water
has washed clean the earth that will forever be the home of our comrade. Had he tired of
bringing joy of our hearts with mercy tales and chance remarks and with that made us laugh,
we would know that he was preparing himself for his eternal journey. Had illness laid him
low during long, unending and unbearable days, we would have prepared ourselves for the
funeral dirge, and the relief that the eternal cycle of birth and death and birth had freed him
of ill health permanently. When he passed on, another great heart ceased to beat.
While he lived, he refused to allow his people to be defined in any way other than the one
they freely chose for themselves. He elected to oppose those who sought sections and personal
benefits, by setting one against the other, the peoples of many colours and cultures
that time had, in a tragic sequence, brought together as one family. While he lived, those who
sought to destroy his soul failed.
He went his way speaking quietly of hope, of human dignity, of the cruel errors of small-minded
people, of the magnanimity of those who were treated as savages by those who claim to
be civilised, of the inevitability of freedom. He worked quietly to persuade us to understand
the errors of the small-minded people, teaching us to assert our own humanity by respecting
the right of all our people to life, liberty and happiness.
Gerald Yona is now resting in his house of wood, cold and still without a voice and we sat
thank you for what you have being to us. We appeal to you that you bear with us that we
might not have understood as well as we should have, how much what you thought and said
and did gave meaning and direction to our own lives. The Congress of the People will forever
remember you. Tell those who joined you, that whatever the problems, still we congress.
TO A CHILD, ‘UBUNTU’
MEANS A LOVING HOME
Consider adoption as an option.
If you consider that ubuntu means ‘I am what I am because of who
we all are’, what do all the orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable
children in South Africa say about us?
Something very positive! But only if we take hands and spread the
message that adoption is ubuntu in action. For there is no truer
reflection of the spirit of ubuntu than a nation that takes care of its
children.
Start by learning the facts with Addoption, South Africa’s first
national adoption resource centre.
