Contrasting sophistication 

that’s made to match 

The new MALIN textile collection brings 

a sophisticated style full of contrasting 

shapes, dimensions and surfaces to living 

rooms and bedrooms with cushions, curtains, 

rugs, bedlinen and more. 

”For the MALIN collection we wanted to 

explore how patterns on textiles can bear 

visible signs that the human hand had 

been part of the design process,” say Danish 

designer duo Barbara Bendix Becker 

and Mette Bache. “We were inspired by 

the design style of the 1950s and ‘60s and 

decided to knit, sew and make three-dimensional 

tests, instead of drawing in the 

computer.” 

“This helped us find the expression for 

the different pieces in the collection and 

get them all to fit together, without being 

the same,” they say. “We wanted it to be 

easy for you to mix the different styles 

and materials and still get a result that 

was elegant.” 


“ Almost everyone I know 

puts their clothes on a chair 

when they go to bed at night,” 

says designer Henrik Preutz. 

“And so do I. I was inspired by 

old, classic gentleman’s valets 

when I designed MULIG valet 

stand.”

Designing an identity 

PREBEN chair 

“Why make another chair if it’s already 

there?” asks designer Christina Halskov. 

That’s part of the philosophy behind the 

new PREBEN chair, created by Christina 

and design partner Hanne Dalsgaard, who 

worked to give PREBEN its own personality 

and design identity. With its welcoming 

upholstered seat made from a lineninspired 

material blend and its distinct 

beech and steel legs, PREBEN certainly 

has a strong identity. Add in a surprising 

little secret – it assembles without screws 

– and PREBEN becomes even more attractive 

and intriguing. 

“I think PREBEN has a warmth and its 

own character,” Christina says, “and you 

can place it on its own eventhough the intention 

is to place it around the table and 

have guests take a seat.” 

Modern, international, spacious – these 

were several words the design duo were 

given to consider. “We wanted the chair to 

have a spacious appearance without taking 

up too much space in the home or with 

packaging,” Christina says. “We couldn’t 

just make a really big, nice chair.” The 

chair’s size was of course influenced by the 

size of pallets, too. And though PREBEN 

was meant to be a dining chair, it shouldn’t 

be confined to a kitchen or dining room. 

Its color and style needed to fit smoothly 

into living areas, too. Christina says they 

also considered ‘stoflighed,’ a Danish word 

that roughly means texture, materiality 

and physicality. Essentially, PREBEN 

should be the kind of chair you want to 

touch and examine in order to figure out 

its materials. 

Though Christina and Hanne have been 

working together for more than 20 years, 

designing for IKEA always involves teamwork 

beyond designers themselves. For 

instance, at one point they changed the 

design that angled the two back legs for 

stability. But this complicated the assembly. 

Inspired by the metal frame on the 

wooden legs and challenged to make assembly 

easier, an IKEA product technician 

came up with an inventive solution that 

reduced the 16 required screws to zero 

and left only six total parts in the package 

(seat, metal frame, legs). Each leg was 

given a rounded end, instead of flat, so 

they could stand at any angle. 

With all four legs now the same, there 

still needed to be stability. That’s why the

metal frame changed instead, so the two back leg holes are 

slightly angled. To assemble the chair, the metal frame goes 

onto the chair and then the legs are screwed through the 

frame’s holes into the chair. Each screwable leg is pretreated 

with dry glue, so the fitting will be locked tight. 

“Because the technician had the time and dedication, 

he was able to create this great and very smart solution,” 

Christina says. “The construction solution of sticking the legs 

into the base is important technically and design-wise. If we 

would have given up the metal frame, the chair could have 

been too ‘50s. The frame takes it into 2012. PREBEN stretches 

from our time to a more timeless product.” 

Working as designers for IKEA since 2000, Christina and 

Hanne already have a number of timeless designs to their 

credit like KULLA and LEDET lighting series. Their studio is 

based in Copenhagen, where they work alongside a small 

staff and friendly Labrador on a number of projects from 

lighting and household products to care solutions and packaging. 

They are both graduates of the Royal Danish Academy 

of Fine Arts.

Flexible textiles 

for veggie lovers 

The new JANETTE collection, a first for 

IKEA from designer Ida Arnfelt, was inspired 

by vegetables, particularly artichokes 

and cabbages. The veggie designs 

combine hand-cut paper shapes with 

drawn lines. “I found inspiration from nature,” 

she says. “I like the organized chaos 

you can find there. Usually I find a form, 

an object or a movement that I like. Then 

I build something from that.” 

At left is a ready-made pair of curtains 

with a custom-made cushion using gray 

cabbage fabric. At right, a custom curtain 

made from green cabbage fabric shows off 

the flexible nature of the new BETYDLIG 

curtain rod system.

To make the new DUKEN bed behave 

more like a sofa, we gave it a comfortable 

headboard that’s easy on reclining backs 

and removable, changeable padded fabric 

covers. What makes the headboard frame 

so comfortable is the plastic mesh that’s 

stretched across it, shaped with a subtle 

curve for your back. We got the idea to 

use plastic mesh after we decided not to 

use foam rubber. Usually used for 

outdooor chairs, the plastic mesh is very 

easy to keep clean if you don’t want to put 

covers on DUKEN. To make the shape of 

the footboard soft too, we used a new 

technique that allowed us to skip putting 

caps on the ends of the steel pipes and 

instead get a continuous, rounded form 

without any loose parts. 

The padded cover comes in two 

patterns designed by Anna Svanfeldt 

Hillervik: one grey with white dots and one 

with a large water lily pattern. “I wanted 

to create a pattern that was graphic, but 

also a bit playful,” she says. “The water 

lilies on the DUKEN IDSE cover make me 

feel happy! And the dots on the DUKEN 

FOGN cover become like wave formations 

in a stream.” To wash the cover, it’s easy 

to take off and put back on because of the 

headboard’s angle, the rounded corners 

and the hook and loop fasteners on the 

cover.

VÄNNERNA textile collection 

Creating home furnishing for children isn’t 

quite as simple as creating for adults. 

Children have different needs, like playing 

when they’re small and having their own 

space when they’re a little bigger. Plus 

children often want to convey their 

interests and identities through home 

furnishing. And they have very strong 

opinions, too. 

If we ever doubted that pre-teens were 

interested in home furnishing, we were 

convinced after visiting homes in several 

countries and hearing one child after the 

other tell us their room was a place for 

expressing who they are while finding 

solitude and privacy. 

To offer more ways for personal 

expression, we asked designers Helena 

Svensson and Julia Bernholz to brainstorm 

on the themes of street fashion, attitude, 

interests, sports and technology. They 

each worked with different parts of the 

collection but together they created the 

main idea with fun details from the world 

of children. Then they enlarged the details 

to bring more attitude into the design. One 

such detail is the zipper, enlarged into a 

large pattern on both the blanket, duvet 

cover and rug. 

Finding patterns and colors that appeal 

to children was just as important as 

designing textiles that could help them 

create their own private space. That’s how 

the big blanket with hood was born, which 

is big enough to crawl into, even if you’re 

an adult.

Cut, pull, captivate 

SOLKULLEN pendant lamp 

Designer Ehlén Johansson sits in her studio with her colleagues, cutting paper 

with a scalpel. It’s meticulous work that takes time and concentration. If the 

holes are too big or small, the lamp’s shape will be wrong. The lamp is 

SOLKULLEN, made with LED and an expanding metal technique. 

When Ehlén did her examination project for design school in 1984, she 

worked with a technique called expanding metal that’s made by putting 

holes in metal sheets and then stretching them into desired shapes. What begins as 

two-dimensional becomes three-dimensional after it’s pulled out like an accordion. 

The technique can make larger things using less metal – which is both economical and 

ecological. SOLKULLEN is made with this technique, but uses paper because it’s more 

suitable for lamp shades. 

Ehlén and her colleagues spent several weeks drawing patterns on the computer 

that eventually became SOLKULLEN. They printed out patterns, cut with scalpels, 

pulled them out and contemplated. 

Too big holes made the lamp too long. Too small holes made the lamp too flat. Over 

and over they made new patterns, cut, pulled and edited until the lamp was just right. 

SOLKULLEN also uses LED, which consumes up to 80% less energy than incandescent 

bulbs. Thanks to their small size, the diodes can be built into the lamp, needing 

less room than large incandescent bulbs. This means the lamp design can be radically 

changed, which is what made SOLKULLEN possible. 

Giving LED and the unique technique all the credit they deserve – it’s still the attractive 

design and the exciting light that makes SOLKULLEN so special. Once it’s up, 

you probably won’t spend much time wondering why it looks like it does. If you’re like 

us, you’ll probably just be captivated by what you see – the light, design and fantastic 

play of light the shade casts when the lamp is lit.

Inspired by fireflies 

ONSJÖ chandelier 

When we give a designer at IKEA free hands the most amazing things 

usually happen - like with ONSJÖ chandelier. 

We asked designer Sigga Heimis to create an extraordinary lamp using 

the new LED technology. LED has revolutionized how lamps can be 

designed, because the small diodes take almost no room at all. And it may 

have been the size of the small diodes that made Sigga think of fireflies 

swarming at night, as she lay in her bathtub gazing at the ceiling. That’s 

when Sigga got the idea, and she came back with a sketch of ONSJÖ. 

It didn’t turn out to be a bathroom lamp after all, but a decorative lamp 

that can replace any glass chandelier. The diodes sit inside metal tubes 

that have been formed into a big flower. 

What happens if a diode breaks? That’s the smart thing with LED. They 

don’t break. They either work or they don’t. And because we test all 

lamps before we put them in the package, we know that they work. 

LED has a lifetime of at least 20,000 hours and uses as much as 

"80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. That’s equal to 

about 3 hours of daily use for 20 years and helps you reduce your energy 

consumption. Not bad for a gang of fireflies!

“It’s like a little sculpture that you can place

GAVIK table lamp 

When Helena Svensson designed GA- 

VIK table lamp she had decided on three 

things: to make the most of glass and 

bring its qualities to a new level; to create 

a lamp that could also be a sculpture; and 

to ensure it would spread beautiful effects 

when lit. 

Helena had just graduated from Beckmans 

College of Design in Stockholm when 

she was asked to design a glass table lamp 

for IKEA that would become GAVIK. 

Glass is beautiful in its own right, 

thought Helena, which is why she wanted 

to make the most of glass as a material 

and create an integrated design where the 

foot of the lamp continues up and folds 

over itself to become a lamp shade. 

The transparent glass would then create 

a layer-on-layer effect and the light would 

refract where it shines through the double 

glass. It wasn’t possible to produce the 

lamp in one continuous piece, but because 

the lamp foot is also made of glass, the 

effect is the same when the light shines 

through the double glass. 

Helena experimented for a long time 

with different sizes, glass layers and 

colors. One idea was to make the lamp 

larger, but the small GAVIK became like 

a sculpture in its own right that can be 

placed a little here, there or everywhere 

to bring atmosphere to a room.

VILMAR chairs aren’t just stylish and 

stackable. They’re durable, too. Their layer- 

glued wood seats are made of the same type 

of laminate used in kitchen countertops. Luck, layers and laminate

Before designer Johanna Jelinek even 

knew she was going to design a chair, a 

technician team was busy with a construction 

challenge – to have a chair with small 

legs that maintained the highest possible 

stability and easy assembly. 

After about 20 attempts the technicians 

found a material and construction that had 

everything. Then it was time for Johanna 

to start designing the seat. 

Luckily, Johanna was also part of a team 

investigating how to improve layer-glued 

wood. Thanks to her expertise in how the 

material can be used, we found a somewhat 

softer and more organic form for the 

seat. The one-piece form both encircles 

and supports the back, and rocks gently 

due to the layer-glued wood. That’s what 

makes it even more comfortable. 

With five dollhouse-sized prototypes, 

Johanna presented her ideas. All the product 

developers gathered to decide, discuss 

and vote which would be made into a model. 

When the choice was made, the chair 

was sent to the model shop next door 

to be produced in full-scale. Discussions 

were also underway about what finish the 

chair should have that would suit both the 

design and a demanding everyday life. 

It’s most common to lacquer chairs. But 

a lacquered surface is not as durable and 

its sensitivity can lead to scratches from 

things like the rivets on jeans. That’s why 

we made the last layer in the layer-glued 

wood seat using the same type of laminate 

that is used for kitchen countertops. 

That’s when it happened. Someone 

broke out with, “If we make the chairs in 

laminate, we can put patterns on them!” 

Why didn’t we think of that from the beginning? 

Johanna returned to the drawing 

board, this time to design patterns for 

VILMAR. Lucky for us again, she’s educated 

as a textile designer and a few days 

later came back with no fewer than 36 

patterns. There were stripes and checks, 

thick and thin, in color and black and 

white. We chose three patterns that easily 

combined with chairs in oak, birch, brownblack, 

white and red. 

We had a hard time picking a favorite 

among all the VILMAR variations. That’s 

the way it should be so that everyone can 

choose their own favorite to park around 

the dining table.

hedgehogs,” she says. “He was very easy 

to start with – hedgehogs are so friendly,

One animal Ann-Cathrine couldn’t seem 

to get a glimpse of was a fox – until she 

encountered one late at night in the early 

summer. “I had picked up my teenage 

daughter at about 1 a.m. and we were 

home, but stayed in the car talking,” she 

says. “Suddenly we saw a fox just sitting 

about one yard from the car, looking at us. 

It was such a strange feeling – like a message 

from the fox that it was OK for me to 


draw it.” 

Keeping the naturalistic spirit and look 

of the animals while having them interact 

was a challenge, Ann-Cathrine says. “As 

soon as an animal starts doing things, it’s 

kind of like doing human things – playing 

football, drinking from a bottle, driving 

a car – it becomes something else,” she 

says. “I wanted them to be animals in the 

forest, but you also have to blend in some 

actions that are unnatural for animals otherwise 

it won’t be funny at all.” 

And even before there was a story in the 

form of a book, Ann-Cathrine wanted the 

textiles to tell stories, too. “I wanted the 

textile collection to get children to fantasize 

about animals and the environment,” 

she says. “Like with VANDRING RÄV duvet 

cover, I wanted it to be like a picture in 

a book that a child could crawl under at 

night. And with VANDRING SPÅR rug, I 

wanted the tracks to be close to life size 

and to create different environments so 

children could have a playground of nature 

indoors.” 

Fantasy, curiosity, learning, connection 

– these are the core hopes of the collection 

that includes duvet covers with a pillowcase, 

blankets, rugs, towels, curtains, 

soft toys, a glove puppet and even a little 

hedgehog squeaky toy. Once the textiles 

and soft toys were finished the book came 

next to tie everything together and bring 

the animals to life. 

Chosen to write the VANDRING book 

One moment author Ulf especially liked was 

when the hedgehog discovers it cannot catch 

flies with its mouth and doesn’t like to bathe. “It 

is equally important to find out what you do not 

like as what you like,” Ulf says.

was popular and proficient Swedish author 

Ulf Stark, who has previously written 

three children’s books for IKEA. The story 

began with the hedgehog, he says, that 

Ann-Cathrine wanted to have as the main 

character. Since hedgehogs have to leave 

and survive on their own during their first 

autumn, it was a good starting point to 

be able to describe how someone learns 

something, Ulf says. “This is true for both 

animals and humans,” he says. “We learn 

what we need.” Starting with autumn also 

gave the story a natural end with hibernation. 

Like Ann-Cathrine, Ulf also turned to the 

forest for inspiration. “When I was little, I 

lived near a small forest – just enough to 

go to when you’re maybe sad and wanted 

to be comforted by the little birds singing 

or if you wanted to study the ants’ lives or 

just enjoy the wind in the trees,” he says. 

“Now I go out with my dog every morning 

- a walk in the woods.” 

Seeing the textile patterns and soft toys 

also helped give Ulf inspiration. “We had 

a meeting with Ann-Cathrine in her studio 

where I looked at her sketches,” Ulf says. 

“I fell directly for a frog with a toadstool 

hat on its head. My head immediately 

began to produce stories.” Ann-Cathrine 

feels the same about the story. “It was 

really, really fun to see the illustrations 

turn into characters,” she says. “It felt like 

a hand in a glove the way Ulf’s story suited 

the drawings and textiles.” 

Both Ulf and Ann-Cathrine also take the 

message of the collection to heart. “Above 

all with the book, we wanted to convey 

an intimacy and love for nature,” Ulf says. 

“It was a book project I wanted to be 

involved in since many children today live 

far from nature and cannot name (or are 

not familiar with) the most common plants 

or animals.” Ann-Cathrine agrees. “When 

I was a child, it was common to bring your 

kids out into the woods to pick berries and 

mushrooms,” she says. “Not that many 

parents do that anymore. I hope that the 

book will teach children a little bit about 

nature and animals, and most of all get 

them to be curious and not afraid of it. 

We need new generations to care about 

nature and animals.” 

Ann-Cathrine Sigrid Ståhlberg has created 

more than 80 textile patterns during 

her nearly 20-year career. A freelance 

designer with IKEA for four to five years, 

she has also created a number of seat 

covers, fabrics and other textiles. Highly 

acclaimed writer Ulf Stark has published 

more than 40 works, releasing his first collection 

of poems at 19. One of Sweden’s 

most read children’s book authors, Ulf’s 

works are global successes, too, having 

been translated to more than 30 languages.

“I often design floral patterns for different things. 

For BARBRO textile collection I wanted to create 

a fresh, romantic feeling with small flowers that 

can be easily combined with both striped and 

checked patterns. When I painted the patterns 

for BARBRO I had a nostalgic feeling when I 

remembered my daughter’s dress when she was 

little. A free and easy romantic feeling that isn’t 

too serious, but instead is filled with bubbly 

summer laughter.”
