4 What are the challenges you faced in your career and how did you overcome them? The whole idea of creating a Microsoft R&D center in India was the biggest challenge for me. One thing is for a pure technology background guy trying to do a technology management role, just not technology management but a general management role was a complete change. Typical technology management role would be just trying to build a product. But here it is the matter of setting up a whole R&D center with virtual and physical infrastructure. That was a major change for me as an individual. The second challenge was trying to create a suitable environment for the center in India where the model is completely different. Here the model is to put a lot of money, hire huge number of people, and do a support job for the products which is not interesting. With such existing models, trying to build an R&D organization was a big challenge. On top of that, trying to make everyone understand what R&D is, and what typical product development is , was a tough task. It took two to three years to bring an awareness. Besides, internally, Microsoft was completely Redmond centered in one place and all the product development was going on in the company, and for the first time we are going to take that core outside so that was a huge challenge. If people of a company are in two different buildings itself, the collaboration is difficult. In that of kind of environment bringing core engineering works together and doing it outside was a challenge. So the question is how do you actually overcome all these challenges. Step zero is you need to have great clarity on what we need to achieve. If you are confused in what you are doing, you will be pushed by the pressure and as a leader if you go back and forth, your team will be totally lost. Step one is actually translating that into action where the demonstration should not take ten years. It should take a short amount of time but not too short. First by signing, I maintained clarity with the Management and the people who are coming with me that what we are going to do it. From the first employee we hired, this is the constant message we are carrying on and then showing it in action. We set two years time frame to develop two products completely from India. And that requires hiring bright people and initially I had to pitch, convince some of them from US. Another important thing is while hiring we need to know what kind of people to hire. Here the employee must have Microsoft DNA. So immediately after the interview panel selects candidates, they will be mentored and trained by these guys so that they can become a typical Microsoft talent. Then around those guys we can build buildings. For 3-5 years, was the most challenging phase where I had to question myself like what is the right strategy getting the team aligned and I used to be the gatekeeper by deciding what comes into India R&D. My mantra was, no matter what the scope of the problem is, we have to sit and solve it here. There is no architecture team or somebody else sitting there. We are the architect, we are the developer, we are the tester, we are the programmers, and we will release the products. So that is how we can demonstrate ability which is very important. In the process we went through a lot of strategic discussions finally figuring out what is the right strategy to grow and have the AHAAA movement for us. So how do we align with core is what we ended up figuring out. It will be a challenge then to have a big windows team, big office team here and we started building things around these products. But by doing that we never lost focus on what we are trying to build that means we are not going to be 100 people team who are working on Office. So we are going to build an independent big feature for the next version of office or windows. That gave us the ability to scale up as every year company is going to invest so that we can have a big team here with full responsibility on what we are trying to do and this enabled the people to learn and grow. So that is the fundamental motivation. At the end of the day, we need to create an organization where every employee starting from the entry level to top most technical leader should know that there is always a way out and a path exists here. Then we had to take up bigger and bigger challenges, and that was the journey we went through. How do you overcome stress in IT field? Step one is to get a clear idea of what we have to do. Step two is always try to go beyond the expectations and that is the only way we can grow in an organization. While going beyond and by doing the task faster, never compromise on quality. This is of paramount importance. Deliver on time and think broadly beyond what was given because no single person can give all the details. So there is always something that is missing and the expectation is, the person who is given this task will be going deep into it to solve it. Hence, with responsibility comes expectations. If you are going deep into the job given, you have to go beyond what is given to you and figure out how to make it complete, think of all possibilities, think about for whom you are creating this project and are you serving the people's need? and are there any gaps? Then cover the gaps which is where dialogue is important, such as we thought about this bit we haven't thought about that we should do thus and just make sure people are in the loop and make it happen. If we could do that, we will never have stress because there are no surprises. Stress comes when there are surprises. If there is clarity and you plan it well to do your work, there will be no stress. Suppose you are given a narrow deadline, you have to go back and say that this task needs more amount of time and there is a reason. Stress will come to you when you agree to the narrow deadlines given by manager. You also end up working longer hours, in fact end up making mistakes too. If you have reasonable details and ask for reasonable time, then the manager will be reasonable. But if we want time without specifying reason then there will be a fight or an issue. What is your road map for Mission R&D? We know how to do this program for 100 people in classrooms. Now we need to figure out how to scale it up across the country that is our number one goal. We feel that we can bring a lot more value by bringing bigger number of people. We want to have 10,000 plus people trained through online model and 500 to 1000 through classroom model and if we can do that we can make significant contribution to the talent pool in the country. If we look at R&D kind of talent that is available, we call it systems talent and application talent. So if we look at those numbers, we will be probably increasing by 25% or 50% and that will be a significant growth. We are planning for the stages, the student has to go through and how to scale it. Starting from next year, we will scale it. Your message to this generation where technology is changing very fast… It is all about the foundation and basics. In Computer Science, the fundamentals are stable enough so we have to be really strong at it. That is the fundamental requirement. Writing efficient code no matter what the language is, how do you design systems, design software, design modules – all this is the fundamental knowledge. So if we are good at fundamentals and have the ability to learn new technologies, develop skills, no matter how much the environment changes, we can make it. This is what we need to develop in the four years of engineering study - become strong in fundamentals. You should be smart enough in using tools to do efficient coding and have the skill to learn new things, keep your ears and eyes open on what is going on around us in the technology industry. Don't be limited by the job that you get. Job is something from morning to evening. You will always have time to pick up new skills if you are passionate about it. So changing environment is not a problem and if we are good at fundamentals we can actually work on and stick around. Wasn't the experience out of the world? Do you know what the underlying technology that brings you this amazing experience of visual effects and video quality is? It is 4K digital projection. Each frame of 4K contains 8 million pixels, each of three colour components. To watch a smooth video you need at least 30 frames per second. When you are displaying each frame you need to process each pixel through several complex mathematical operations. The flow of such computations to realize a functionality (such as video decoding) is called an algorithm. The algorithm for 4K digital projection involves processing of about a billion bytes of data per second using complex mathematical operations. Another mindboggling example is a self driven car which has to react to different traffic situations by processing huge amounts of data from different sensors (including cameras) in a split second (Figure-1). The extent to which signal processing has penetrated in different walks of our life is ever increasing. The volume of data to be p r o c e s s e d a n d t h e complexity of algorithms is ever increasing - much faster than the rate at w h i c h I C f a b r i c a t i o n technology is developing. The number of digital circuit components that can be squeezed into a chip Figure-1: Signal processing in a car is steadily increasing (popularly known as Moore's law) as the smallest size of a component is reaching amazingly close to atomic size (currently 14 nm) overcoming several constraints imposed by basic physics laws. However, algorithmic complexity is increasing much faster (Shannon's law) than Moore's law, opening a wide gap between required computational capabilities and available resources. A clever approach to catch up with Shannon would be to help Moore by trying to make the circuit of same size (gate count) do more computations than before. Different processor types (RISC processors, SIMD extensions, VLIW processors, DSPs and GPUs) have been tried, but none of them has really solved the problem because they all have been based on conventional von Neumann or Harvard architectures or a modification thereof. There is a way to bridge this gap if we change the very method in which we do the computations and try to solve the fundamental bottlenecks that restrict the number of operations that a given circuit can perform. In addition to having unsatisfactory performance, current day processors also consume a lot of power. So they become unsuitable for devices that run on batteries (such as smart phones, cameras, etc.). Manjeera Digital Systems Pvt. Ltd. (MDS) is a start-up company that is precisely trying to solve these problems of limited performance and high power consumption. MDS has designed a state-of-the-art processor, Universal Multifunction Accelerator (UMA), which uses a computing approach that is fundamentally different from the way current processors work. UMA computing approach is based on a new technique called 'Middle Stratum Operations (MSO) based' computing approach. In addition, UMA's architecture is a true data-plane architecture. This approach leads to a processor design that achieves high performance using relatively smaller gate count at ultra low power consumption. MDS has applied for patents in all major countries, and is a winner of India Innovation Growth Programme Award in 2013. UMA is being targeted for the large and fast growing market in vision and multimedia processing that is used in a wide range of devices such as smartphones, cameras, tablets, wearables, and automobiles to name a few. A fully working and programmable prototype of a UMA based processor has been implemented on an FPGA board (Figure-2). UMA has created interest among several major potential customers. They are manufacturers of consumer products, surveillance, defence, and space sectors. UMA is a processor technology that has been developed entirely in India for the first time. It is expected that MDS helps promote electronic hardware development activity in the country and create employment for several engineers in this sector. Figure-2: Image scaler demo
ISSUE <strong>08</strong> APR 2015 5 Pioneering a New Dimension in Engineering Pharmaceutical Engineering A New Interdisciplinary Course at BVRIT Narsapur for 2015-16 BVRaju Institute of Technology (BVRIT) located at Narsapur near Hyderabad takes pride in introducing a new interdisciplinary course “Pharmaceutical Engineering”, the first of its kind in India from the academic year 2015-16. T h e f o u n d e r C h a i r m a n o f S V E S , Padmabhushan Late Sri BV Raju and its present Chairman, Sri KV Vishnu Raju are seasoned Chemical Engineers with immense industrial experience coupled with academic interest. This initiative is in line with their vision and a great deal of thinking and efforts on the part of higher ups went into transforming the conceived notion into a reality. The initiative to start this new engineering course at BVRIT was taken up after considering various aspects. BVRIT is located near Hyderabad which is the hub of several pharmaceutical industries producing drugs and pharmaceuticals meeting a major demand of the world. Current Chemical engineers produced by Chemical engineering courses are able to perform the tasks related to process development, process design and operational aspects of chemical and pharmaceutical plants. However, Chemical engineers may not have sufficient knowledge to deal with P h a r m a c y r e l a t e d s y n t h e s i s a n d d e v e l o p m e n t a l a s p e c t s c o n c e r n i n g p h a r m a c e u t i c a l p r o d u c t s . T h o u g h pharmacists produced by Pharmacy courses have better knowledge in science related pharmaceutical, drugs and biological aspects, they cannot deal effectively with the design and operational aspects of pharmaceutical plants. T h e p r o p o s e d B . T e c h c o u r s e i n Pharmaceutical Engineering is designed with a l o g i c a l c o m b i n a t i o n o f C h e m i c a l Engineering and Pharmacy courses. This course enables to produce versatile engineers having a combinatorial knowledge to deal with t h e s y n t h e s i s , p r o c e s s a n d p r o d u c t development, design and operational aspects of pharmaceutical and related plants. As the eligibility for admission into this course is similar to that of other engineering courses with Maths, Physics and Chemistry in Intermediate and State Entrance Test, the students on completion of this course have opportunities to compete for jobs and higher education as any other engineering course. Currently, this course is conducted with the names of Pharmaceutical Technology at Anna University and Ambedkar Marathwada University, and as Pharmaceutical Science and Technology at Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Since a large number of reputed pharmaceutical industries are located around Hyderabad, there is a great scope for employment opportunities for this course. The main aim of Pharmaceutical Engineering is to enhance the knowledge in designing drug excipients and integrate it with the mechanics of machines and plants to produce drug intermediates and medicines that can fight with the ever-growing health hazards and d i s e a s e s . T h i s c o u r s e e n a b l e s t h e pharmaceutical engineers to equip themselves with all the latest tools and technologies involved in the production of drugs and pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical engineers can perform major role in the design, scale-up, construction, and operation of plants that convert chemical and biological materials into valuable pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical therapies. The graduates of this course with their cross–functional skills can prove their p ro f i c i e ncy i n va r i ous sectors. T h is engineering branch provides excellent career opportunities to pharmaceutical graduates in n u merous s e c t o r s such as c hemical technology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, nutrition, food and food additives, biomedical, dairy farms and cosmetics. BVRIT has well established Chemical Engineering laboratory infrastructure and VIPER has well- equipped pharmaceutical and analytical laboratories.
