Fashion in Munich – a cut above the rest
The fashion industry has deep roots in Munich. The Bavarian capital boasts a
vibrant and surprisingly diverse fashion scene – not to mention excellent economic
conditions under which to cultivate a flourishing fashion landscape. In Munich,
strong purchasing power combines with a very extensive infrastructure and a
perfect geographic situation for the fashion industry, within easy reach of Austria,
Switzerland and northern Italy. On a more general level, local knowledge and
design resources have nourished a distinctly creative milieu. And close proximity
to the Alps and a breathtaking array of lakes only add to the attraction of this
pulsating city. Munich has emerged from the recent wave of restructuring in the
textile industry stronger than ever and now ranks as one of Germany's leading
fashion hubs. Trade fairs and the order business in particular have grown
constantly in recent years, playing a large part in the region's economic upswing.
New, ultra-modern order centers within the city's boundaries have further
enhanced Munich's standing as a fashion base. Looking at the German fashion
industry as a whole, well-known Munich fashion designer Susanne Wiebe puts it in
a nutshell: "Berlin is where you look. Munich is where you order."
Major international names of the caliber of Escada, Etienne Aigner and Bogner
were founded here and have for many decades been doing a brisk business on
the banks of the Isar. A plethora of smaller fashion design ateliers likewise draw
inspiration from Munich's unmistakable flair. The city center and a variety of urban
district centers provide shopping landscapes to suit every taste. Here, worldfamous
luxury brands rub shoulders with unique designer-made collections. The
top-end labels that line the Maximilianstrasse, Theatinerstrasse and
Briennerstrasse have in particular done much to establish Munich's reputation as a
truly exclusive fashion and shopping venue.
Training and education too are woven into the fabric of Munich's fashion industry.
No fewer than three respected Munich fashion schools cultivate innovation and
encourage young designers to experiment and grow. These establishments have
already brought forth a wealth of talent.
The conspicuous local presence of the fashion press testifies to Munich's role in
the vanguard of this fast-paced industry. The editors of popular fashion journals
such as Vogue Deutschland, InStyle, Cosmopolitan and Elle are all headquartered
in the Bavarian capital.
landscape
In recent years, two trends in the textile industry have been evolving in parallel
around the globe. One is that a small number of premier trade fairs have become
established on a relatively stable level. The other has been dynamic growth in the
order center business.
Munich has risen masterfully to the challenges facing this industry and is rapidly
emerging as the epicenter of Germany's order business. ISPO Munich an
international trade fair for sports equipment and sports fashion hosted by the New
Munich Exhibition Center, is regarded as one of the world's leading trade fairs in
this market segment. Munich fabric start (for apparel fabrics) is likewise one of
Europe's leading spring fair. As an order center too, Munich is visibly gaining in
Bavarian capital's position as a leading fashion venue.
