EAST AND WEST SHOWDOWN IN K-TOWN
On paper, you won’t find a more evenly matched
East vs. West contest than the one on the
ice tonight at Rogers K-Rock Centre. Their only
matchup so far this season was opening weekend
when the Frontenacs took the Knights to a shootout
win in London. Much has changed since then,
including the rosters for both teams with trades
made up to the deadline to ready these two for
postseason runs.
The London Knights, with their top line of Mitch
Marner (Toronto Maple Leafs), Christian Dvorak
(Arizona Coyotes) and Matthew Tkachuk who
have combined for 103 goals and 184 assists so
far this season. That matches up well against the
Frontenacs top line of Warren Foegele (Carolina
Hurricanes), Michael Dal Colle (New York Islanders),
and Spencer Watson (Los Angeles Kings).
The London Knights have 42 wins, 12 regulation
losses, 2 overtime losses, and 1 shootout loss
(to Kingston) , good for 87 points and 2nd place
in the Midwest Division (2 points behind Erie) and
3rd place in the Western Conference. In their past
10 games the Knights have 8 wins and 2 regular
losses and are undefeated in 4 straight games.
The Knights are a powerhouse at home, with only
3 losses at Budweiser Gardens, but have lost 9
games on the road.
The Kingston Frontenacs have 37 wins, 15 reg-
ulation losses, 2 overtime losses, and 2 shootout
losses in 56 games, good for 78 points, a 6 point
lead on Barrie for top spot in the Eastern Conference.
In the East Division, the Frontenacs have
wide 16 point lead over the Peterborough Petes.
In their past 10 games, the Frontenacs have 7
wins, 2 regulation losses, and 1 shootout loss.
300-POINT CLUB: Along with an Ivan Hlinka gold
medal, first round NHL Draft status, and a Memorial
Cup Championship ring, Michael Dal Colle
can add 300-point club member to his impressive
junior hockey accomplishments. This past
Sunday vs. Niagara, Dal Colle extended his point
streak to 14 games with a goal and two assists,
collecting his 300th career OHL point. Dal Colle
reached the 300-point mark in 236th career regular
season games.

in this special from sportsnet, gare joyce looks at how the trade for
michael dal colle was a game changer for the kingston frontenacs
Days or weeks after he hoisted the
Memorial Cup and skated with
it at the Colisée in Quebec City
last May, the realization hit Michael Dal
Colle. Making the New York Islanders out
of training camp was a possibility, but
it was a big ask at the same time. And
if he didn’t, then the left-winger from
Woodbridge, Ont., was going to be back
with the Oshawa Generals. Yeah, he’d get
to watch the banner raised in the Gens’
home opener, and, yeah, he’d be set
to rip through the OHL after scoring 42
goals and 93 points in 56 games in the
2014–15 season. He realized that he’d
be going back to Oshawa, but not that
Generals team.
“They were going to be rebuilding,”
Dal Colle says. “It was going to be a
different situation.”
When Dal Colle didn’t make the
Islanders out of training camp last fall,
some wondered if the Islanders might
have missed with his selection fifth
overall in the 2014 draft. Most who
wondered were professional wonderers,
media skeptics and the like. It’s hard
to figure how anyone can come down
so hard on a kid when he isn’t deemed
ready to play for a NHL playoff team just a
couple of months after his 19th birthday,
but they did. And those who judged Dal
Colle harshly because of that pointed to
his early-season performance back in
Oshawa as proof of what they would call
his crashing stock—only eight goals and
25 points in 30 games.
“It was a tough transition for me, a
different role, different expectations as a
team,” Dal Colle says.

And Dal Colle was
also knocked when he
was cut at the world
junior tryouts for the
second time in two
years.
What might have
been a lost season was
more than salvaged
when the Kingston
Frontenacs traded for
Dal Colle on January 1.
They paid a hefty price
to get him: Robbie
Burt, Kingston’s firstround
draft pick (10th
overall) last spring,
a second in 2017
(originally owned by
Flint), a third in 2018,
a second in 2019 and a
third in 2022. Kingston
General Manager Doug
Gilmour’s willingness to
send a lot of futures to
the Generals for three or four months of Dal
Colle is a testament to his continuing value
as a player.
“Michael gave us an instant upgrade on
offence both five-on-five and on the power
play,” says Kingston coach Paul McFarland,
who was an assistant with the Generals two
season ago. “When the trade was made I
figured the best fit for him was playing
beside Spencer Watson and it’s been that
way since day one.”
McFarland put Warren Foegele at centre
between Watson and Dal Colle, and the
latter has responded
with the best hockey
of his career: 15 goals
and 31 points in 14
games since coming
over.
“This team reminds
me a lot of the Generals
last season,” Dal Colle
says. “We have a big
team that plays a
heavy game with a lot
of structure and a lot
of attention to defence.
That’s how we won in
Oshawa last spring.”
Those comparisons
held up well after a
brutally tough weekend
of games for the
Frontenacs—a threein-three-and-a-half
against Windsor, North
Bay and Barrie. The
Frontenacs won all
three games, including the Spitfires who
were the second-best team in the Western
Conference when they visited Rogers
K-Rock Centre. As promising as that matchup
was, the crucial game of the weekend
was against the Colts on Monday afternoon.
Leading into that game, Kingston was two
points up on the Colts for first place in the
Eastern Conference.
Dal Colle was the second player from
the Memorial Cup–champions acquired
by Kingston this season. In November, the
Frontenacs plied defenceman Stephen

Desrocher away from the Generals for four
draft picks and others on a conditional
basis.
“We knew we weren’t going to have
Sam Bennett back [from Calgary] and we
didn’t know for sure that we would have
Lawson Crouse back [from Florida either],”
Gilmour says. “But with Crouse back there
was a window for us and a chance to win.
Some naysayers will say that we paid too
much to get [Dal Colle and Desrocher] but
this is junior hockey and when you have
a chance to win you have to take it. With
Dal Colle, now we have three good lines
that we can send out there and a young
fourth line… an energy line that’s really
developing… that isn’t going to hurt us

BILLY KIMMERLY
and keep everybody fresh.”
McFarland says that the addition of Dal
Colle changed the atmosphere around the
Frontenacs before he ever played a game
for them. “Everyone in the room knew
that Michael makes us a better team,”
McFarland says. “Against other teams’
first lines we’re able to send Crouse and
[Juho] Lammikko and whichever winger is
going for us and we like that. They’re hard
to play against.”
This is demonstrably true, as is the fact
that Dal Colle finds them a lot more fun to
play with.
Jason Robertson’s route to the Kingston
Frontenacs might be the longest of the
non-European import players. Born in
Northville, Michigan, he was raised in California
before moving to Toronto. He was
selected by the Frontenacs in the fourth
round of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection
after a midget season with the Don Mills
Flyers that saw him record 61 points–28
goals and 33 assists–in 62 games. So far,
in his rookie season with the Kingston
Frontenacs, Robertson has an impressive
28 points–16 goals and 12 assists–good
for 14th among OHL rookies.
We caught up to him after practice at
Rogers K-Rock Centre.
GameDay: What’s it like being a rookie
in the OHL?
Jason robertson: It’s a lot different
from minor hockey. The players are older
and faster, and you have to adapt to it. But
it’s also really fun and a lot to take in.
GameDay: You’re a 16 year old, still
juggling school on top of a 68 game regular
season. What’s a typical day like?
Jason robertson: I get up at 7:30
a.m., have breakfast and head to school
from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and then
head to the rink for practice. After the onice
practice, I head into the workout room
and put in some time on the bike, stretch,
rollout, and then head home around 5:00
p.m. to have supper and relax or hang out
with the boys.
GameDay: As a Northville, Michigan
native, you’re a few hours from your family
here in Kingston. What’s been the biggest
adjustment in being away from home?
Jason robertson: Last year I lived
with my mom and my brother in Toronto,
which is only four hours from my home in
Michigan, so I’ve had some experience
with not seeing my family every day. The
toughest things is not seeing my parents,
my little brother, and my little sister and
having them to play around with and joke
with. Your family knows your personality
better than anyone, and not being with
them is probably the toughest thing.
GameDay: A very special day for you
was December 12, 2015. In the first half of
your rookie season, with some of the veteran
players missing from the bench due
to injury or tournaments, you scored a hattrick
on home ice against the Soo Greyhounds.
Tell us about what that was like?
Jason robertson: It was wild. It
was a really good experience. You never
forget your first OHL hat-trick, that’s for
sure. I was excited, the boys were excited
for me. I somehow ended up with a red
tophat on after that game, I think from one
of the mascots, which made it a really fun
experience.
Battling night after night side-by-side
with the same group of players,
working towards a common goal and
overcoming obstacles; these are the bricks
that form the foundation of a team.
Ask any hockey player what they
remember most about their time on the ice or
off and you’re likely to hear the same refrain
over and over, “It was my teammates.” When
asked to think back on his three seasons
as a member of the Kingston Canadians,
Wayne Erskine is singing from the very same
songbook. “I loved the hockey, I loved the
competition and I have great memories of
many team and personal accomplishments,”
recalled Erskine. “But the thing that I
remember most and the thing that I miss
the most about those days, is the friendships
and the camaraderie.”
So, this summer, Erskine and 30 or more
of his former teammates from the 1984-
1987 Kingston Canadians will be gathering
in the Limestone City to look back, share
some stories and rekindle those bonds.
The idea for the reunion was batted
around initially when the Frontenacs hosted
the OHL All Star game in 2010. Part of the
festivities included a game between Kingston
alumni and former NHLers.
“We tried to do something right after that
game–it was so much fun,” said Erskine.
“But because of schedules and such, we
just couldn’t make it happen. For whatever
reason–everybody is much more available
now so it’s looking really good for this
summer.”
It’s been 30 years since many of these
players spent any time together and the goal
of Wayne Erskine and his co-organizer Chris
Clifford is to create a weekend which will not
just renew old friendships but also give the
fans and community members a chance to
see the players they once cheered for from
the friendly confines of the “M Centre.”
“We had a pretty good team in those
days,” said Erskine. “Good coaching,
goaltending, lots of speed and scoring and
we were pretty tough when we needed to
be.”
Most long-time fans will remember
names like Jeff Chychrun, Scott Pearson,
Herb Raglan, Scott Metcalfe and the late
Bryan Fogarty but those teams also had their
share of locally grown talent. Ted Linesman,
Jeff Cornelius and goaltender Chris Clifford
carried the flag for their hometown. In fact
it was Clifford who arguably drew more
attention than any other player when, on
January 7th, 1987 he became the first
goaltender in the long and storied history of
the Ontario Hockey League to score a goal.
“That sure got a lot of media and it shone
the spotlight on us for sure,” said Erskine.
“But Chris would be the first to tell you that
we deserved the spotlight because we had a
solid team.”
A quick check of the 30-year-old stats
bears those claims out. The 1985/1986
team won the first round of the playoffs
against Oshawa but lost in what was then
a round-robin playoff format between
Kingston, Peterborough and Belleville. The
next year, the OHL returned to the more
traditional series of quarter finals, semi-finals
and finals. Kingston defeated the Belleville
Bulls in the first round but lost to the Oshawa
Generals. That loss was the culmination of
Erskine’s final year. A few of his teammates
like Raglan and Chychrun would go on
to successful NHL careers. Although he
wasn’t playing in the OHL any more, Erskine
decided to stick around Kingston for a while
and was heartbroken to see the trials and
tribulations that would dog the team in 1988
including a league-record losing streak and
changes in ownership, franchise name and
sadly, a downward spiral for the team in
general. “It was disappointing based on what
we’d accomplished and on how good the
younger core group coming in looked,” he
said. “The issues with ownership certainly
trickled down to the players and obviously
they struggled to stay focused.”
However, the dark days of the Kingston
Raiders did not diminish Erskine’s love for
his adopted city or for his OHL alma mater.
He’s still an avid fan of the team and gets
down to Kingston from his home in Ottawa
whenever his job with Canadian Blood
Services allows for it.
The excitement is palpable in his
voice as he talks about finalizing plans for
the reunion. More than 30 players have
committed to return this summer including
former St. Louis Blues right winger Herb
Raglan and Flyers tough guy Jeff Chychrun.
Things will kick off with a golf day for the
players followed by a Saturday afternoon
that will involve reconnecting with the fans
and then a more formal sit down dinner
on Saturday evening. Former players who
might be interested in attending should get
in touch with the Frontenacs front office for
contact information and more details. KF
