ONE MORE FOR THE BOOKS
FINAL GAME OF RECord-breaking regular season against former highway rival bull(d0gs)
The Kingston Frontenacs close their record-breaking
43rd regular season tonight
against an old friend in the Hamilton Bulldogs
(formerly the Belleville Bulls). In the year since
the team announced the move from Eastern
Ontario to Hamilton, the fortunes on the ice
for both clubs couldn’t be any more different.
While the Bulldogs struggled for consistency
and wins, the Frontenacs tweaked a roster to
be the best of the Eastern Conference. Tonight
the Frontenacs look to add a final win
to extend their new record for points and wins
in a season.
The Bulldogs hope to end with a win to
end on a positive after their loss in Ottawa
last night ended their post-season hopes. The
Bulldogs come into Kingston tonight with a
record of 4 wins, 5 regulation losses, and 1
overtime loss in their past 10 games. With a
season total of 25 wins, 34 regulation losses,
and 8 shootout losses, the Bulldogs have just
58 points and will finish the regular season
after tonight’s final matchup in 9th place in
the Eastern Conference
After last night’s 7-0 win over the Oshawa
Generals, the Kingston Frontenacs have 45
wins, 17 regulation losses, 3 overtime losses,
and 2 shootout losses in 66 games, good for
95 points, a 9 point lead on Barrie for top spot
in the Eastern Conference. In the East Division,
the Frontenacs continue to hold a massive
22 point lead over the Ottawa 67’s. In
their past 10 games, the Frontenacs have 7
wins, 2 regulation losses, and 1 overtime loss.
A DOG WITH BARK AND BITE: While the Bulldogs
might look like easy pickings on paper, they
aren’t a team to be taken lightly. This season
alone, in their 5 matchups to date, the Bulldogs
have 2 wins to the Frontenacs 3.
BILLY KIMMERLY
The keys to a win for the Frontenacs tonight
against the Hamilton Bulldogs will come down
to how effective they are on three key points in
their gameplan.
1. Role players chance to shine Tonight will be
a chance for the third and fourth line players to
step into the spotlight. Much like we saw last
night, you can expect some of the regular top line
guys to be rested in a game with no significance
in the standings. This should bump everyone up
one line and get some guys into the lineup that
aren’t used to playing every night. Ryan Cranford,
Cody Caron and Jason Robertson took advantage
of the added ice time and all had great games
last night against Oshawa. To get a win tonight
Kingston will need more of that from those play-
ers and others. If Kingston can get contributions
from guys like Zach Dorval, Austin Grzenia and
Sam Field they should have enough to come
away with a win.
2. Race to four goals While getting to the four
goal mark will not guarantee a win for Kingston,
based on the season series it will put them
in a pretty good spot. In each of the five previous
match ups between Kingston and Hamilton,
the winner of the game has scored exactly
four goals. If you look at Kingston’s season as a
whole, when they score four goals or more in a
game they are 33-3. It’s safe to say that if one
team manages to score four goals tonight, there
is a good chance that team wins this game.
3. Focus on the details Tonight is the final regular
season game for the Frontenacs which means
it is the last chance for a tune up before the playoffs
start next Friday. Hard work and attention to
detail all season has allowed Kingston to clinch
the top seed in the East meaning this game can
be looked at as a full speed practice. Play the system,
run the breakouts, forecheck and use the
cycle the way it has been coached all year. Kingston
would like to win the game, but it is more
important not to develop bad habits just before
the playoffs begin.
Jordan Jackson is a longtime Kingston Frontenacs season ticket
holder who can be heard regularly on The Morning Show with
Kris and Tony Orr on K-Rock 105.7 and is co-host and analyst on
Frontenacs Tonight before each Friday home game on CogecoTV.
in this special from sportsnet, gare joyce looks at how the trade for
michael dal colle was a game changer for the kingston frontenacs
Days or weeks after he hoisted the
Memorial Cup and skated with it at the
Colisée in Quebec City last May, the
realization hit Michael Dal Colle. Making the
New York Islanders out of training camp was
a possibility, but it was a big ask at the same
time. And if he didn’t, then the left-winger
from Woodbridge, Ont., was going to be back
with the Oshawa Generals. Yeah, he’d get to
watch the banner raised in the Gens’ home
opener, and, yeah, he’d be set to rip through
the OHL after scoring 42 goals and 93 points
in 56 games in the 2014–15 season. He
realized that he’d be going back to Oshawa,
but not that Generals team.
“They were going to be rebuilding,” Dal
Colle says. “It was going to be a different
situation.”
When Dal Colle didn’t make the Islanders
out of training camp last fall, some wondered
if the Islanders might have missed with his
selection fifth overall in the 2014 draft. Most
who wondered were professional wonderers,
media skeptics and the like. It’s hard to figure
how anyone can come down so hard on a kid
when he isn’t deemed ready to play for a NHL
playoff team just a couple of months after his
19th birthday, but they did. And those who
judged Dal Colle harshly because of that
pointed to his early-season performance back
in Oshawa as proof of what they would call
his crashing stock—only eight goals and 25
points in 30 games.
“It was a tough transition for me, a different
role, different expectations as a team,” Dal
Colle says.
And Dal Colle was also knocked when
he was cut at the world junior tryouts for the
second time in two years.
What might have been a lost season was
more than salvaged
when the Kingston
Frontenacs traded for
Dal Colle on January 1.
They paid a hefty price
to get him: Robbie Burt,
Kingston’s first-round
draft pick (10th overall)
last spring, a second in
2017 (originally owned
by Flint), a third in 2018,
a second in 2019 and a
third in 2022. Kingston
General Manager Doug
Gilmour’s willingness to
send a lot of futures to
the Generals for three
or four months of Dal
Colle is a testament to
his continuing value as
a player.
“Michael gave us
an instant upgrade on
offence both five-onfive
and on the power
play,” says Kingston coach Paul McFarland,
who was an assistant with the Generals two
season ago. “When the trade was made I
figured the best fit for him was playing beside
Spencer Watson and it’s been that way since
day one.”
McFarland put Warren Foegele at centre
between Watson and Dal Colle, and the latter
has responded with the best hockey of his
career: 15 goals and 31 points in 14 games
since coming over.
“This team reminds
me a lot of the Generals
last season,” Dal Colle
says. “We have a big
team that plays a
heavy game with a lot
of structure and a lot
of attention to defence.
That’s how we won in
Oshawa last spring.”
Those comparisons
held up well after a
brutally tough weekend
of games for the
Frontenacs—a three-inthree-and-a-half
against
Windsor, North Bay and
Barrie. The Frontenacs
won all three games,
including the Spitfires
who were the secondbest
team in the Western
Conference when they
visited Rogers K-Rock
Centre. As promising as that match-up was,
the crucial game of the weekend was against
the Colts on Monday afternoon. Leading into
that game, Kingston was two points up on the
Colts for first place in the Eastern Conference.
Dal Colle was the second player from
the Memorial Cup–champions acquired
by Kingston this season. In November, the
Frontenacs plied defenceman Stephen
Desrocher away from the Generals for four
draft picks and others on a conditional
basis.
“We knew we weren’t going to have Sam
Bennett back [from Calgary] and we didn’t
know for sure that we would have Lawson
Crouse back [from Florida either],” Gilmour
says. “But with Crouse back there was a
window for us and a chance to win. Some
naysayers will say that we paid too much
to get [Dal Colle and Desrocher] but this is
junior hockey and when you have a chance
to win you have to take it. With Dal Colle,
now we have three good lines that we can
send out there and a young fourth line… an
energy line that’s really developing… that
isn’t going to hurt us and keep everybody
fresh.”

BILLY KIMMERLY
McFarland says that the addition of Dal
Colle changed the atmosphere around the
Frontenacs before he ever played a game
for them. “Everyone in the room knew
that Michael makes us a better team,”
McFarland says. “Against other teams’ first
lines we’re able to send Crouse and [Juho]
Lammikko and whichever winger is going
for us and we like that. They’re hard to play
against.”
This is demonstrably true, as is the fact
that Dal Colle finds them a lot more fun to
play with.
36 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

THE ULTIMATE KINGSTON
THROWBACK JERSEY
toNIGHT THE KINGSTON FRONTENACS PAY TRIBUTE TO THE FORT HENRY GUARD,
IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED WAY OF kfL&a, WITH A UNIQUE UNIFORM FOR THE GAME
While the Kingston Frontenacs have been
looking to carve a new destiny and rewrite
the history books for this team in this recordbreaking
season, the team is announcing that it will be
going back in time for a special jersey for the final home
game of the regular season tonight when they faceoff
against the Hamilton Bulldogs. The team is partnering
with United Way of KFL&A and Fort Henry and will
wear uniforms—jerseys and socks—honouring the Fort
Henry Guard.
The special uniforms, designed by Kingston
design firm BM Dodo, are authentically accurate to
the Fort Henry Guard, a throwback to the standard line
infantry uniform of a British Regiment and the standard
gunner’s uniforms of the Royal Artillery in the year
1867. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game
with 100% of the net proceeds to benefit United Way of
KFL&A, who are currently celebrating their 75th year of
helping residents in the KFL&A area, and also happen
to be a charity close to the heart of the St. Lawrence
Parks Commission, home of Fort Henry and the Fort
Henry Guard.
“We are really excited to unveil this special uniform
for Saturday’s game,” said Justin Chenier, Executive
Director of Business Operations with the Kingston
Frontenacs. “We’ve done a few different theme jerseys
over the years, but none with as much history to the
area, and uniqueness to Kingston as the Fort Henry
Guard. The fact that we were able to get it accurate, will
make it a sought-after game worn jersey by collectors.
That aside, we are so thankful to Fort Henry for their
support, and we look to find ways to increase support
in the community through hockey, in this case with
United Way.”
“We are thrilled to be part of this very special
initiative. The limited edition jerseys are specially
designed to commemorate our United Way’s 75th
anniversary and it is only fitting that these are in
partnership with Kingston Frontenacs and Fort Henry,
both of which are an integral part of Kingston!,”
says Bhavana Varma, President & CEO of United
Way of KFL&A. United Way works with individuals,
organizations and key partners to build and strengthen
our community, bringing people and resources together
to facilitate change. Our vision is a future where people
are self-sufficient in a community, where individuals
live with hope, dignity and a sense of belonging. Visit
www.unitedwaykfla.ca for more information.
“The Fort Henry team was thrilled when Justin
approached us last summer, with the idea of creating
a Fort Henry Guard specialty game jersey as a way to
raise funds and awareness for KFL&A United Way,”
said Jennifer Tarini, Manager, Fort Henry. “We are very
proud of our affiliation with both of these organizations.
St. Lawrence Parks Commission and Fort Henry are
strong supporters of the United Way and we look
forward to seeing the Kingston Frontenacs proudly
“sport” the Fort Henry Guard Jersey as they take to
the Rogers K-Rock Centre ice against the Hamilton
Bulldogs.”
The St. Lawrence Parks Commission, an agency
of the Government of Ontario, operates facilities in 16
municipalities stretching from Kingston to the Quebec
border, including Upper Canada Village, Fort Henry
National Historic Site of Canada (part of Ontario’s only
UNESCO World Heritage Site), Crysler Park Marina,
Upper Canada Golf Course, Upper Canada Migratory
Bird Sanctuary and 12 campgrounds and day-use
areas including the Long Sault and 1000 Islands
Parkways.
Information on the jersey raffle is available on the
Kingston Frontenacs website. The auction opens on
Saturday, March 19 and closes and Saturday, March
26, 2016.
