READY TO ROCK THE GENERALS
fRONTS SET FOR ROUND 1 BATTLE AGAINST EAST DIVISION RIVALS AND DEFENDING MEMORIAL CUP CHAMPIONS
Hollywood screenwriter couldn’t have
A scripted a better plot to playoff drama for
round 1 in the Eastern Conference. Kingston
and Oshawa. The paths of these two teams
are so intertwined. Paul McFarland, Kingston’s
head coach was an assistant coach in
Oshawa for two seasons before getting the nod
in K-town. Last season, the Generals won it
all–the conference, the OHL, and the Memorial
Cup–but lost 6 out of 8 matchups to the
Frontenacs.
This season the Generals would need to
unload talent to reload on draft pics after last
season’s run. Their biggest trade partner?
Kingston. Now home to Stephen Desrocher
(Toronto Maple Leafs) and Michael Dal Colle
(New York Islanders). This season, in the 8
matchups between the two clubs, Kingston
has 7 wins to Oshawa’s 1.
The Generals secured their playoff fate late
in the regular season after sitting within a couple
of points either way of Hamilton for much
of the second half of the season. They come
into round 1 after losing 2 straight to end the
regular season, with 6 wins, 3 regulation losses,
and 1 overtime loss in their last 10 games.
The Generals finished in 8th place with 62
points from 25 wins, 35 regulation losses, and
8 overtime losses in the regular season.
The Kingston Frontenacs regular season
will go down in history as the franchise’s best
ever. With a record 46 wins, 17 regulation
losses, 3 overtime losses, and 2 shootout losses,
the Frontenacs also set a record for points
with 97 on the season.
BACK-TO-BACK GAMES 1 AND 2: This series has a
quick start with both teams back at Rogers
K-Rock Centre for game 2 tomorrow night at
7:00 p.m.
The keys to a win for the Frontenacs tonight
in game 1 against the Oshawa Generals will
come down to how effective they are on three key
points in their gameplan.
1. Control your emotions No matter how much
playoff experience a player has, the playoffs are a
very emotional time, especially in game 1. There
is excitement, nerves, and pressure going through
every players mind and body. If players can control
those emotions they can be very beneficial.
Where players can run into trouble is when they
go over the edge. Knowing where the line is and
not crossing it is the key. Michael Dal Colle and
Stephen Desrocher should be able to help other
Frontenacs players find that line. Those two players
have 75 combined playoff games. They know
how to handle the emotions of the OHL playoffs
and can share that knowledge with their less experienced
teammates.
2. 5 on 5 is just fine Kingston will be happy to
keep the play to 5 on 5 in this series. They are a
much deeper team then the Generals. The top
two lines for Kingston are top grade quality and
the third line could be a second line on many
OHL teams. Although the fourth line may not
score a ton of goals, they rarely get scored on and
will provide a good, physical shift every time they
are out. As long as they are even strength Kingston
will be at an advantage. If they get into penalty
trouble, that may open the door for Oshawa
to keep these games close with their power play.
3. Just worry about Game 1 There is a lot surrounding
this Kingston Frontenacs team. The often
talked about lack of playoff success in recent
years paired with the pressure of winning as the
first seed is something the players are aware of.
They can’t fix any of those issues tonight. It will
take more than one game to do that. They have
been successful all year by worrying about one
game at a time. That is the best approach tonight,
and every night after that. Don’t worry about what
the puzzle looks like when it is finished, just worry
about getting this piece to fit.
Jordan Jackson is a longtime Kingston Frontenacs season ticket
holder who can be heard regularly on The Morning Show with Kris
and Tony Orr on K-Rock 105.7 and is co-host and analyst on Frontenacs
Tonight before each Friday home game on CogecoTV.
the kingston whig-standard’s DOUG GRAHAM looks at the playoff
experience michael dal colle and stephen desrocher bring to the lineup
Kingston Frontenacs’ Michael Dal
Colle, among his many hockey skills,
has more of one intangible than
anyone else in the openinground playoff
series between his team and the Oshawa
Generals.
Dal Colle has played in 42 Ontario
Hockey League playoff games and he and
teammate Stephen Desrocher were on
the Oshawa Generals team that won the
Memorial Cup last year. General manager
Doug Gilmour said obtaining Dal Colle
and Desrocher made double sense to the
Frontenacs.
They were great in the regular season
for the Frontenacs. The fact they both have
been on a Memorial Cup winning run has a
value that can’t be undersold, said Gilmour.
“They have been through it and know
what it is going to take. Nothing is easy,”
Gilmour said.
“With (Dal Colle and Desrocher), with
Watty, Lawson, Roland and Chad, they are
going to be ones leading. It’s a learning
curve for everybody.”
Dal Colle said after having deep runs
every year when he was in Oshawa, to face
the Generals in the first round will be “a
little bit weird at first”
“They are my enemy now. They are a
good team and are going to play us hard,”
Dal Colle said.
“We have to play the right way. Play our
A game to win.”
The 19-year-old Dal Colle has scored
18 goals and 54 points in the playoffs. He
won’t have quite the same nervous edge
compared to his younger teammates who
lack playoff experience.
“There will be some nerves for some of
the young guys. Hopefully I can calm guys
down through it. There’s going to be some
highs and lows especially when you want to
go far,” Dal Colle said.
“Make no mistake about it — our goal is
to win the OHL and go on to the Memorial
Cup.”
Dal Colle said it is important for the
team to remain at an
even keel, controlling the
emotional roller-coaster
from game to game of a
series.
“We can’t get too high
or too low at any point,”
he said.
“The city is looking for
a good playoff run and
that’s in the back of our
mind. We want to give
back to the fans. They’ve
been amazing since I’ve
been here. Hopefully we
can give back to them
with a long run.”
Head coach Paul
McFarland isn’t changing
his strategy of having his
players focus on the next
game. He doesn’t want
the distraction of past Frontenacs playoff
failures being a topic of concern.
No Kingston team has won a playoff
round since 1998.
“The past means nothing, it really
means nothing. This group hasn’t got
anything to do with the past,” McFarland
said.
“Everything we’ve done this year is just
controlling the present day.”
What McFarland has been stressing to
the players is the playoffs
aren’t a sprint but rather
a marathon — one series
win leading to another. It
takes 16 wins to be the
OHL champion.
“Understand you are
not going to win every
night. There are going to
be ups and downs. It’s
all about how you handle
it and how you prepare
for the next game,”
McFarland said.
The difference in the
playoffs is that it is a
best-of-seven series with
adjustments from one
game to the next.
The Frontenacs won
seven of eight games
against Oshawa in the
regular season.
“More than anything we’ve got to play
our game. There hasn’t been a whole lot
of changes to our game all season long,”
McFarland said.
“For us it is more about playing at
the highest level possible and having
individuals in our game expect the most of
themselves and each other.”
36 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

On Sunday, March 20, 2016, the Kingston Frontenacs players, management, staff, families, billets, and fans
gathered in the Delta Kingston Waterfront Hotel’s Grandview Ballroom to celebrate the individual achievements of
the record-breaking 2015-16 regular season.
What really began almost a year ago at the 2015 OHL Priority Selection, the pre-camp fitness testing for rookies
in May, through training camp in August, and then on the ice in September will go down in history as the best
regular season ever for the Ontario Hockey League in Kingston!
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD
Jacob Paquette and Jason Robertson
Presented to the most outstanding rookie for the past
season, as selected by the Frontenacs coaching staff.
The award was a tie this year between Jacob Paquette
Jason Robertson. Both winners were selected by
the Kingston Frontenacs in the 2015 OHL Priority
selection. Jacob Paquette was selected in the 2nd
round, 31st overall and had a rookie season of 3 goals,
10 assists for 13 points in 56 regular season games
with a plus/minus rating of +24. Jason Robertson was
selected in the 4th round, 62nd overall and had a
rookie season of 18 goals, 14 assists for 32 points in
54 regular season games.
MOST POINTS AWARD
Spencer Watson
Presented to the player with the most points over
the course of the season. In his fourth OHL season,
Spencer Watson electrified the Frontenacs offence
while amassing 43 goals, 46 assists, for 89 points in
64 games. He was always at the centre of the action,
and drove the Frontenacs offence with his relentless
puck pursuit and slick moves.
DEFENCEMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
Roland McKeown
Represents the Frontenacs defenceman who
demonstrates the greatest all-around ability in the
position, both offensively and defensively. In his
fourth OHL season with the Kingston Frontenacs,
Roland McKeown recorded 7 goals and 35 assists for
42 points in 59 games, and notched a plus-21rating.
His steady play at both ends of the ice helped lead the
team to the 5th best powerplay and 3rd best Penalty
Kill in the OHL.
HARDEST WORKER AWARD
Lawson Crouse
Presented to the player who displays the best work
ethic, dependability, enthusiasm, and highlights the
player’s effort and improvement over the course of the
season. Back for his third season with the Black and
Gold, Lawson Crouse was a two year anchor of Team
Canada at the World Junior Championships and his
tireless effort and brut physical presence make him
the ultimate sheriff of the offence.
TOP SCHOLAR AWARD
Nathan Billitier
With the exhausting schedule of practices and games
that OHL players are involved in, the Frontenacs still
place an equally important emphasis on academics,
as the team tries to develop both hockey players,
and upstanding young men. The Top Scholar Award
is given in recognition to the player who excels in
both their academic career and their hockey career.
Balancing school, hockey, and life as a teenager can
be a difficult adjustment for many players. Nathan
Billitier was able to develop his skills, not just on the
ice this season, but also in the classroom.
SPRINGER FAMILY AWARD
Kim Hulton
Presented to the person who best represents the
organization in an off-ice capacity. The role of
academic advisors is one that often goes without
recognition or high profile reward. It’s a tireless job of
making sure the players attend their classes, do their
homework, and leave the OHL season having achieved
their academic expectations. The Frontenacs are very
grateful to this year’s winner.
2016 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD
Spencer Watson and Roland McKeown
Bestowed upon the best performing player on the
Frontenacs, this award is selected by the players
themselves. This award is also a tie and in fact was
a very close vote with a number of other players who
were close in voting. This is an incredible feat and
speaks to how many “valuable” players are on this
team. Spencer Watson lead the team in scoring this
season and Roland McKeown led the team in defence
for the record-breaking season of wins and points.
