Donovan has not had a hit since “Hurdy Gurdy Man”
in 1968. That does not mean he is forgotten. Donavan
Philips Leitch sold-out Parker Playhouse for a concert
September 8 in Fort Lauderdale. It was the 50th anniversary
of the opening of Parker Playhouse and coincidentally
50 years since Scottish-born Donovan hit
American pop charts with his number one hit, “Sunshine
Superman.”
Donovan turned 70 on the 10th of May, 2016. Most of
his hits were in a narrow time frame from 1965-1968.
They included “Colours,” “Sunshine Superman” “Jennifer
Juniper” and “Universal Soldier.” In his Fort Lauderdale
concert he sang lesser known Donavan delectable,
such as “Guinevere,” “The Little Tin Soldier” and “Josie.”
From his first marriage Donovan fathered two children
who became actors, Donovan Leitch and Ione
Skye. He was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
in 2012.
Donovan was known for his laid-back, hippy-dippy
style. He still follows that lifestyle. His stage set was
filled with fluffy pillows, upon which on one he performed.
There was no band, no special effects; just
Donovan and his acoustic guitar.
Donovan’s 21-city 50th anniversary tour continues
through October. On Sept. 14 he is scheduled to play
Carnegie Hall. The tour wraps up Dec. 1 at the Keswick
Theater in Glenside, PA.
