THE MISSION OF LAUREUS
Laureus is a global movement harnessing the universal
power of sport to bring people together as a force for
good. The combined elements of Laureus present a
unique entity that supports and showcases the work of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
The Laureus World Sports Academy is an unprecedented
collection of the world’s legendary athletes. They select
the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards and act
as global ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation, volunteering their time to visit projects in
order to draw attention to the problems afflicting society.
The members of the Academy share a belief in the power
of sport to break down barriers, to bring people together
and improve their lives.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is an innovative
charitable initiative that uses the positive influence of
sport to tackle society’s most pressing challenges around
the globe, supporting projects on five continents.
The vision of the Foundation, as defined by Laureus
Patron Nelson Mandela, is ‘Sport has the power to
change the world.’
Its mission is to use the power of sport to address
social challenges through the support of sports-related
community development initiatives, using sport as a tool
for social change.
Projects worldwide have improved the lives of over
750 000 children through the support of the Global
Foundation and a growing network of eight subsidiary
foundations in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, South
Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.
* Vodafone, the world’s leading international
mobile communications group will be supporting
Laureus as a Global Partner from 2008.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is supported
by Founding Patrons Daimler and Richemont, and
their designated Founding Partners brands Mercedes-
Benz and IWC Schaffhausen who provide funding and
support.* It is also supported by Global Corporate
Supporter ICAP.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is championed
by a growing number of Laureus Friends & Ambassadors
around the globe who have joined the members of the
Academy as ambassadors and spokespeople of the
Foundation’s work.
The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier
global sports awards honouring the greatest sportsmen
and women across all sports each year. The Awards is
a platform to showcase and generate support for the
Foundation’s social programmes and the work of the
Academy. The winners are selected by the ultimate
sports jury – the 43 members of the Academy, the
living legends of sport honouring the greatest athletes
of today. Each year the Laureus Sport for Good Award
is presented to an individual (or group) who have used
the fundamental beliefs that underscore the Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation as the inspiration for their
work and have made an outstanding contribution to
society through the medium of sport and in so doing
have made a difference to the lives of young people in
local communities.
As Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation says: ‘Everyone at Laureus
shares a common belief that sport is a universal
language which has the power to speak to people
across the globe, whatever their colour or creed.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Communities around the world continue to face terrible
hardship caused by natural disasters, war, famine and
disease. These phenomena have an ongoing impact
on children and young people around the world in the
form of social aftermaths. Once again, 2007 has seen
the Laureus organisation look to relieve at least a few
of these issues by using the power of sport.
2007 was another tremendous year for the
Foundation. The organisation raised more funds and
supported more projects than ever before. The issues
social communities face and the projects that the
Foundation funds to assist in tackling those problems
consistently reminds us how sport has the power to
make a difference. Activities at projects the Foundation
funds tackle an amazing number of different issues
from general health and well being, the scourge of
HIV/AIDS and the education of children about it,
conflict and violence and gender inequality to name
a few. In the modern world, where these issues keep
expanding, I am confident that sport has the power to
address and positively impact on each and every one.
The Foundation continues to enjoy the support of
the Laureus World Sports Academy and its Founding
Partners. I am tremendously grateful to my fellow
Academy members for the on-going support, not
only through their patronage, but in the time they
give to visit projects, assist in raising the profile of the
Foundation and more importantly, the projects the
organisation supports. My fellow Academy members
and I are passionate about the causes the Foundation
supports and I speak on behalf of us all, when I admit
that we are consistently awe-struck by the courage
and determination that we see in the faces of the
young children taking part in activities which we
visit, who face such tremendous difficulties in their
daily lives. It is as a result of the Founding Patrons,
Daimler and Richemont, and in particular Founding
Partners Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen that
the Foundation is able to continue its work and I
am extremely grateful to them for their continued
patronage. There are, of course, many other funders
who make contributions to the organisation, both
corporate and private and we are eternally grateful for
their support.
2008 will see a new era for the Foundation. The
organisation will grow in terms of supported projects
and also as we develop strategies to link existing
projects we already support. We hope to promote
understanding and transfer expertise between some
of the most worthy projects around the world. Laureus
will provide a platform which links this expertise to
major international projects and NGOs and to smaller
community projects, the leaders of whom often find
themselves isolated and without intellectual support.
We look forward to 2008, once again with huge
excitement and anticipation. There are many more
stories to tell and much work to be done. I hope you
will enjoy reading within these pages some of the
stories and a little more about our ongoing work.
Profitable growth and acceptance of our responsibility
in respect of the environment and society go hand-inhand
at Daimler and all its brands. Social responsibility,
therefore, is an essential element of all our corporate
activities, and contributes to the interests of our
customers, employees, shareholders and society as a
whole. We are committed to providing products with
the capacity to enhance individual mobility as well
as transport goods in such a way that their use by
future generations takes place in stable societies and
environments.
Daimler can look back on a tradition that stretches
back over more than a hundred years and is marked
by the pioneering achievements of automotive
engineering. Today, the company is a leading supplier
of premium passenger cars as well as the world’s largest
manufacturer of commercial vehicles. With its strong
brands and its comprehensive portfolio of automobiles
– from compact cars to heavy-duty engine trucks
which are completed by tailor-made services along the
automotive value chain – Daimler is active in nearly all
countries in the world.
As an automobile manufacturer, we enjoy a wideranging
spectrum of influence, yet we are aware of
and seek to minimise the demands the manufacture
and use of our products make on the ecosystem.
We are proud that our products have indispensable
as well as progressive effects on the freedom,
growth, and affluence of any society. Our long-term
commitment to society, demonstrated through our
HIV/AIDS programme and the development of a
global association of training facilities, has long
set international benchmarks of corporate social
responsibility.
In the light of the urgent need to replace
intercultural strife with intercultural understanding,
sport is more relevant than ever as it transcends
cultural barriers through peaceful competition,
international dialogue and peaceful co-existence.
Mercedes-Benz, the nominated brand of Daimler,
has always sponsored a broad range of projects and
programmes in the field of sport, and is proud to
support the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. We
believe that the power of sport plays a catalytic role in
the development of society.
Our holistic approach helps to create agreeable
living and working conditions in domestic and
global markets. We have, however, realised that the
challenges ahead demand a continuous learning
process and responsible partnerships between politics,
business and society.
The diversity of activities and initiatives at Daimler
and its brands demonstrate our commitment to
working with others towards the resolution of
numerous pressing global issues. Within our sphere of
influence, and to the very best of our abilities, Daimler
will continue to contribute to these efforts, promoting
international harmony and understanding.
The year 2007 saw a major milestone in the history
of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation as it
announced its support for its 50th humanitarian
project worldwide.
Back in 2000 the landscape was very different.
Laureus had just identified its very first project, the
Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), based
in one of the largest and poorest slums in Nairobi
where disease was widespread and AIDS was a serious
problem. The project pioneered the use of football
as a tool to foster cooperation and encourage young
people to clean up their community. Laureus funding
helped MYSA to develop its infrastructure and buy
new computer equipment. Three years later, in 2003,
MYSA received the ultimate accolade by being
nominated for the Nobel Peace prize and were also
re-nominated in 2004.
From these early beginnings, the work of the
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has intensified,
focusing on helping young people overcome
challenging social issues including poverty,
homelessness, war, violence, drug abuse, discrimination
and AIDS. Over 750 000 young people have had their
lives improved by Laureus since its inception. At the
heart of the Foundation is the Laureus World Sports
Academy, a dedicated team of 43 legendary sportsmen
and sportswomen, led by Chairman Edwin Moses, who
have all volunteered to act as global ambassadors.
Laureus has achieved acclaim for the work it
does for disadvantaged young people around the
world and Richemont is proud to have played a
significant part in supporting Laureus in its mission.
The challenges involved in meeting this objective
are substantial, and there is still much work to do.
However, the steady, consolidated growth of the
movement has benefited hugely over the years from
the support of Laureus Founding Patrons Richemont
and Daimler and their nominated brands IWC
Schaffhausen and Mercedes-Benz.
Richemont believes that business should operate
in a responsible and sustainable manner. In today’s
fast-moving world, the global community expects
companies to operate in a way that recognises the
interests of a wider body of stakeholders and not
just simply their shareholders. This is a view shared
by our company, and all those who work for its many
brands. Being a good corporate citizen requires that
businesses recognise the importance of environmental
issues, play an active role in the communities in which
they operate, and act in a fair and responsible manner
toward their business partners and customers alike.
The ultimate vision of Laureus is that ‘Sport has the
power to change the world’, words spoken by Laureus
Patron Nelson Mandela at the very first Laureus
World Sports Awards in Monaco in 2000. It is a vision
Richemont is proud to be a part of.
Mercedes-Benz recognises that sport plays a crucial
role in the development of society and is proud to
be a Founding Partner of the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation. Various fundraising initiatives have been
set in motion to build a financial base for the lasting
operation of the Foundation around the world. Over
the past eight years, Mercedes-Benz has raised more
than US$8-million for the Foundation.
In December 2003, the company donated the
first Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren sports car to the
Foundation to raise funds. It was auctioned by Christies
in New York for US$2.2-million – a milestone in the
history of Laureus. The company also sponsored
the Mercedes-Benz Golf Charity in 2005 and 2006,
the International MercedesTrophy and has provided
sponsorship and limousine services for a series of
fundraising events.
In 2007, Mercedes-Benz continued its commitment
and dedicated several events and initiatives to
the Foundation. The Mercedes-Benz motor sports
department donated a DTM racing car. The Laureus
AMG Mercedes C-Class DTM driven by Gary Paffett
finished ninth at the end of the DTM International
series achieving one victory on 6 May at Oschersleben
in Germany. The car not only raised outstanding
awareness for the Laureus Foundation, but will also be
auctioned in 2008 in aid of the Foundation.
Wherever appropriate, Mercedes-Benz uses its
network to support Laureus. Consequently the
traditional ATP tennis tournament MercedesCup in
Stuttgart ‘Weissenhof’ – presented by Mercedes-Benz
– was played under the charity flag of the Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation.
Mercedes-Benz partner Burda, one of the biggest
publishers in Germany, started a strategic alliance
with Laureus Foundation Germany and launched a
successful image and charity advertising campaign
in 2007. The campaign and exclusive editorials will
continue in 2008. Furthermore, since 2005 Mercedes-
Benz has held the annual Laureus Media Prize
Germany, honouring sport journalists and sports media
for coverage of Laureus-related events.
Mercedes-Benz has a long history in sports,
especially motor sports. Through its involvement
with Laureus, the Foundation’s aim to ‘use sport as
a tool for social change’ has become an integral part
of the company’s social responsibility programme.
Mercedes-Benz has been the world’s most innovative
and successful automotive brand for more than 100
years. Because the company is all about mobility – of
both people and goods – one of our key goals is to
make mobility safer. We are therefore also involved in
numerous road-safety projects around the world to
protect those who need it most: children.
As Founding Partner of the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation, IWC Schaffhausen has enthusiastically
implemented the Laureus philosophy over the last year
with a wide variety of activities, providing financial
support and also by direct involvement in the frontline
work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
In April, Laureus World Sports Academy members
Boris Becker, Ilie Nastase and Alberto Tomba joined with
international media representatives at the SIHH 2007
watch fair for the launch of the limited-edition Pilot’s
Watch Chrono-Automatic Edition Laureus Sport for
Good Foundation of which only 2 500 were made. This
watch will carry the Laureus message around the world
while bringing material benefit – US$500 000 from the
sale proceeds were donated to the Foundation.
The exclusive engraving on the back of the watch
is based on a child’s drawing, the winning entry in the
drawing competition organised by IWC for children
involved in Laureus supported projects around the
world. This year’s ‘Time for Joy’ drawing competition
was won by Jimena Mainé, aged seven, from Uruguay,
who submitted a coloured drawing that depicts the
joy and happiness of three girls playing basketball in
resplendent sunshine.
One of the highlights of the Laureus World Sports
Awards in Barcelona in May 2007 was the launch of
the IWC book Let The Children Play, dedicated to the
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The book outlines
the work of the Foundation by portraying a selection of
ten projects it supports. World-renowned photographers
and journalists visited the projects and created this
high quality coffee-table book with powerful iconic
photographic images and on-the-ground reports. It is a
great showcase for the Foundation’s mission: using sport
as a vehicle for social change in deprived communities.
IWC Schaffhausen then brought the Laureus message
to Japan with a book launch attended by Chairman of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Edwin Moses.
Together with Japanese tennis player Kimiko Date, he
inaugurated a special exhibition of images from the book.
IWC supported a variety of Laureus activities around
the world in 2007, providing financial, public-relations
and event-organising support, and donating watches
to auctions and special events to raise funds, for
example at the IWC Laureus Polo Cup.
IWC Schaffhausen is proud to be the driving force
behind establishing Laureus Foundation Switzerland
and is fully committed to raising public awareness of
Laureus and its projects. The first IWC initiative for
the Foundation was the IWC Tennis Trophy in Geneva
in June. Supported by Academy member Ilie Nastase
as well as Friends & Ambassadors Emilio Sanchez and
Marc Rosset, this event not only generated funds
but also awareness for the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation in Switzerland.
LAUREUS GLOBAL FOUNDATION REPORT
2007 SAW THE LAUREUS MOVEMENT GROW FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.
THE FOUNDATION FINALISED THE STRUCTURE OF EIGHT NATIONAL AFFILIATE
FOUNDATIONS, INCREASED ITS NUMBER OF GLOBALLY SUPPORTED PROJECTS
AND ENGAGED IN A NUMBER OF FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES WORLDWIDE,
RAISING FUNDS AND PROMOTING THE MESSAGE OF SPORT FOR GOOD.
2007 has seen another tremendous year for the
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Income through
fundraising has increased, which leads to more projects
being supported by the movement. Continuing the
focus on working with partners and other donors
as well as utilising events around the world, the
Foundation raised funds through Founding Patron
contributions, Founding Partners and other Corporate
Supporters as well as through fundraising at the
Laureus Worlds Sports Awards and other Foundation
led events.
Once again Founding Patrons Richemont and
Daimler were instrumental in their support of the
Foundation, assisting with fundraising through
Founding Partner brands IWC Schaffhausen and
Mercedes-Benz. IWC continued their highly successful
limited edition watch series bearing the engraving
of a competition winners drawing; the results of a
worldwide competition held amongst participants of
Laureus supported projects. This was in addition to the
launch of the Let the Children Play book, a collection
of imagery taken at Laureus supported projects around
the world by renowned photographers, brought
together in a coffee table collection. Mercedes-Benz
were always on hand to lend their strength in transport
to numerous fundraising events around the world, not
least the Laureus World Sports Awards, whilst also
fundraising and promoting the cause through team
sponsorship of the British racing driver, Gary Paffett’s
car racing in the esteemed DTM series. The car,
adorned with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation
logo was raced at various events, and signed by many
high profile individuals on its travels, endorsing the
Sport for Good message it carried. The car will be
auctioned in 2008 in aid of the Foundation.
IWC were instrumental in establishing and
launching the eighth national affiliate Foundation
in their home, Switzerland. Laureus Foundation
Switzerland was launched in June at a glittering gala
function which introduced many Swiss sports men
and women to the work of the Foundation. In the
short space of time to the end of 2007, the Swiss
Foundation had already signed up a number of high
profile national sporting heroes and a Country Patron
in the travel firm TUI Suisse, as well as supporting two
new projects in Switzerland.
As a result of these developments, the Foundation
grew its project reach with the addition of five projects
in 2007, bringing the total number of supported
projects to 51.
The research initiated in 2006 to evaluate the
movement across eight of its project partners was
delivered in the summer with the following key
conclusions;
• Being involved in a Laureus supported project
increases positive kinds of behaviour in participants
and decreases negative behaviours.
• The longer individuals are in a project, the more
those positive behaviours are displayed and the more
they value their local community.
Above all, the research scientifically confirmed
what all the Foundation and the Academy intrinsically
already know – that sport can go a huge way to impact
communities facing everyday social ills.
It reaffi rmed the commitment of the Foundation,
not only to work more closely with current project
partners, but to promote the message of the
movement amongst development practitioners and
international organisations around the world to
adopt sport as a key tool in the fi ght against crime,
HIV/AIDS, poor health, poverty and the myriads of
other issues being tackled through Laureus supported
As ever, the Academy were extremely active on
behalf of the Global Foundation and its National
Laureus organisation and will continue to be a focus for
the Foundation into 2008.
2008 will see the Foundation continuing to build
on the momentum of 2007 – more fundraising, more
events and better support for projects. The Foundation
will look to consolidate and strengthen relationships
with well performing sporting projects and become
a network of best-practise and expertise for smaller,
but no less effective, projects around the world. The
Foundation will continue its emphasis on research to
feed the Academy members a better understanding of
the key drivers of effective projects and allow them to
better promote the message for the movement as
a whole.
During a year of steady growth the Foundation
continued to support West City (Club Ciudad
Oeste) in Mendoza, Unión y Amistad en San
Isidro in Buenos Aires, and Deportivo Barracas
in General La Madrid, Buenos Aires.
Fundación Laureus Argentina continued to support Ciudad Oeste in
Mendoza through activities such as football and hockey which address
crime, vandalism and drugs amongst disadvantaged young people in the
slum of La Favorita. Complementary activities such as theatre and cooking
classes have also been added. West City was visited by Laureus World
Sports Academy member Hugo Porta in November. He hosted participants
from this project in Buenos Aires several times during the year, providing
them with an unforgettable experience.
Based in General La Madrid, in the province of Buenos Aires, Deportivo
Barracas gives hundreds of children the opportunity to combine sporting
activities, educational workshops, music and dance. The children’s
neighbourhood is characterised by very low school attendance, widespread
physical abuse, crime and drugs. Project activities transmit essential values
to the youngsters and provide them with tools to create a better life for
themselves. The success of this project is guaranteed by the effort and
involvement of the entire community. Porta and Ana Lia Santarelli attended
the launch of a new library, computer lab and First Aid centre in February. They
were joined by special guests and important members of the community.
The Foundation also supported a special Hockey Sevens event which was
organised by the San Isidro project to promote the values learnt through
sport, instead of simply promoting competitiveness. Points were awarded
for participating, winning, drawing or loosing, as well as for fair play,
companionship and respect for your adversary.
Expanding on social development through sport, Fundación Laureus
Argentina provided training on how to address social issues through sport
to new projects in the province of Salta, and in Laprida, a very small town
in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. The Foundation seeks to strengthen the
project network by promoting coaches and methodology exchanges amongst
projects. The Foundation manager attended the Role Models Retreat hosted
by the South African Foundation. This was a very interesting and fruitful
experience and we will strive to share and implement the methodologies used
by the supported projects in South Africa during 2008.
The Foundation hosted its annual fund-raising polo match in late June at
the Ham Polo Club in London for much-needed funds. This event was made
possible through the invaluable support of Friends & Ambassadors Eduardo
Heguy and Adolfo Cambiaso, who invited some of the best polo players in the
world to the event, and the support of IWC Schaffhausen and ICAP as event
sponsors. We were honoured to have Martina Navratilova, Boris Becker and
Daley Thompson in attendance. The funds raised have been used to continue
with the expansion of our work.
2007 was a busy year for Fundación Laureus
España as it actively worked to grow its social
programme in Spain.
In April 2007, the vibrant city of Barcelona once again hosted the successful
Laureus World Sports Awards, bringing to stage the world of sports and
highlighting the activities of the Foundation, including its fi rst project,
Grumet EXIT. This project helps young people improve their educational
prospects and social integration through traditional sailing. The programme
links the school curriculum with sports and the teaching of skills and values
that will help them succeed at school and in life. This programme has
attained both local and international recognition as a pioneering and unique
programme that yields incredible results.
Special Olympics Spain, the Foundation’s second project, also had an
active year. The programme incorporates health and sports with social-
integration activities around Spain. Eighty-fi ve Spanish athletes participated
in the Special Olympics Games in Shanghai, China. While there, Chairman of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Edwin Moses, met the athletes for
an inspirational chat.
Spanish Tour de France legend and Laureus World Sports Academy member
Miguel Indurain joined well-known business personalities at a private dinner
in Madrid to launch a special edition of the unique photographic book
Let The Children Play that will raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation. Juan Antonio Samaranch Salisachs, Chairman of the Fundación
Laureus España said, ‘The publication of this book will undoubtedly foster
a deeper knowledge of the real raison d’être of Laureus and its efforts to
improve the lives of thousands of children all over the world. The decisive
contribution of El Mundo and IWC Schaffhausen is essential to our work
and will make it possible for us to sponsor projects that improve the lives of
children and adolescents in our country. We are thankful to our collaborators
IWC and El Mundo for supporting us in our mission to build a better future
through sport.’
At the end of the year, the Foundation celebrated its fi rst Celebrity Pro Am
Golf Challenge, an event that gathered local celebrities, golf professionals
and representatives from the private sector to raise funds for the projects in
Spain and communicate the values of Laureus.
2007 was a year of growth, recognition and consolidation, with particular
focus on education, health and social integration. In 2008 we will continue
this path of growth, adding more projects and increasing the communication
of the core messages of the Foundation.
A new name and a prestigious art auction
marked the year for the French Foundation.
Laureus Association France underwent a complete legal and institutional
restructuring process in 2006 and 2007. This has also resulted in a name
change from ‘Fondation Laureus – l’Institut de France’ to ‘Association
Laureus France’. The new legal structure has allowed it to sign a licence
agreement with the Global Foundation, formalising its place within the
international movement. It is believed that this new structure and the
incorporation of new trustees will also promote its long-term sustainability
and help the Foundation better meet its aims of improving the lives of
children in France.
During this new phase, some of the key highlights of the year included
L’Art Emmêlé 2007, held during the Rugby World Cup in the prestigious
Hotel de Crillon, on 18th October. The event began with a cocktail party and
exhibition of 56 pieces of rugby-related art created by artists from all over the
world. Four-hundred-and-fifty guests were in attendance, including famous
actors, rugby players, artists, art collectors, and the media. The cocktail party
was followed by an auction with the best auctioneer in Paris, Pierre Cornette
de Saint-Cyr. Academy member, Hugo Porta went up on stage to present the
IWC book, Let the Children Play, and speak about the partnership between
IWC Schaffhausen and the Foundation. A large majority of the 56 pieces of art
were sold, with a large photograph of Sebastian Chabal going for €15 000.
The auction was followed by an exclusive dinner created by the famous
chef Jean-François Piege attended by approximately 50 people, including
former and current rugby players Hugo Porta, Gavin Hastings, Serge Simon,
Christophe Juillet, Richard Pool-Jones, Pierre Rabadan, Grant Ross and
Alejandro Riesler.
Projects supported during 2007 included Golf Educatif, Maison de la
Mer and Athletes du Monde. However, due to the changes in the whole
structuring process, their activities were limited.
We are looking forward to 2008 with the knowledge that great challenges
In 2007, Laureus Foundation Germany expanded
its activities in various fields, launched three
new projects, participated in a TV documentary
and organised many fundraising events.
Laureus Foundation Germany embarked on three new projects in 2007.
The first, move&do, is a specialised, mobile sports and group activities
unit that tackles violence, drug abuse and ethnic discrimination in schools.
The programme includes canoeing, climbing and group games. The patron
of the project is Friend & Ambassador and multiple World Champion and
Olympic gold medalist in bobsledding, Christoph Langen.
Supported by the Foundation and the German Federal Ministry of
Internal Affairs, KICK Formore, a streetfootball league promoting tolerance,
was launched in Stuttgart on 21st July. More than 400 youngsters from
six different cities from the state of Baden Württemberg participate in the
league. Friend & Ambassador, Axel Schulz, former world class heavyweight
boxer, is the project’s patron.
KICK im Boxring is the third project in Berlin that Laureus Foundation
Germany assists in conjunction with Berliner Sportjugend. Located in Berlin-
Treptow, the programme aims to take youth off the street and into a boxing
gym where exercise is coupled with social counselling. Triple titleholder in
heavyweight boxing, Wladimir Klitschko, launched the project on 30th
August 2007. Klitschko’s experiences in Berlin inspired him to commit to a
similar project in New York in 2008.
On 5th May, 63 000 spectators watched an action-packed racing weekend
in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. With his Laureus AMG Mercedes C-
Class, British driver Gary Paffett won the second DTM race of the season.
At the end of the season, Paffett’s Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class car will
be auctioned to raise funds for the Foundation. The Laureus-branded car
races in favour of the Foundation and is therefore a unique feature on the
DTM circuits.
Making history, Germany’s Premiere TV produced a series of
documentaries on Laureus projects. Seven installments of 30 minutes each
feature the activities of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation around the
world. A highlight show completes the set. The Foundation received a total
of 20 hours of coverage.
In November 2007, Chairman of Laureus Foundation Germany, Boris
Becker, visited the PeacePlayers International project in South Africa. He
was joined by the Executive Director of Laureus and Vice President of Brand
Communications for Mercedes-Benz, Dr Olaf Göttgens. This inspirational trip
to the townships of Durban and Johannesburg culminated in their meeting
with honorary patron of the Laureus World Sports Awards, Nelson Mandela.
2007 also brought a remarkable number of fundraisers and donations.
Highlights were the ATP Tennis Tournament MercedesCup in Stuttgart in
July and the Stars&Cars event by Mercedes-Benz in November.
Following the appointment of a new chairman,
general directors and new members of staff,
Fondazione Laureus Italia structured itself on
two different levels: corporate governance
and the strategic planning of projects.
The involvement of Fondazione Laureus Italia in the project Wheelchair
Hockey project may have come to an end in 2007, but two new projects
were started: La Palla Storta and Polisportiva Laureus. Both projects offer
activities from Monday to Friday in an effort to reach as wide a number of
participants as possible. Expert trainers combined with educational tutors
ensure a balanced approach. The proportion of under-age youth and
adults is 15–20 to one. Monitoring by a group of psychologists complete
the programmes, guaranteeing support in understanding and managing
the dynamics of the group, as well as those of the individual. Moreover,
the value of the positive principles of sport, such as the ability to face
limits, keep commitments, respect rules, improve communication and
understand group spirit are reinforced, resulting in increased self-esteem
among the participants.
La Palla Storta uses the game of rugby as a tool to promote wellbeing
and social integration among boys coming from the outskirts of Naples and
from the Juvenile Penitentiary of Nisida. The project was inaugurated on
5th April 2007 in Naples, during a press conference in the City Hall, held by
mayor Rosa Russo Iervolino. Two Laureus World Sports Academy members,
Sean Fitzpatrick and Hugo Porta, were also present. Later that day, on a
fi eld close to the Juvenile Penitentiary of Nisida, Mauro Bergamasco and
the Italian rugby team joined the two Academy members in a game of
rugby with boys involved in the project.
Polisportiva Laureus arranges sporting activities such as rugby, volleyball,
basketball and soccer at the Sport Centre Saini in Milan for boys and girls
who come from urban areas and have a high risk of social exclusion. On
25th November 2007, Chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation,
Edwin Moses, presented the project to the press and television broadcast.
He was then joined by Friend & Ambassador Filippo Volandri and they
joined in some games with the project’s participants.
Italian style magazine Monsieur organised a gala dinner at the end of
November 2007, where Fondazione Laureus Italia was the benefi ciary of a
charity lottery. Founding Partners Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen
donated a Smart Car and two Pilot watches to the cause. Thanks to the
support of Edwin Moses and Friends & Ambassadors Filippo Volnadri and
Filippo Magnini, the evening was a great opportunity to raise the awareness
of the daily activities of the Foundation in Italy.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Trust
South Africa did not rest on its laurels in 2007,
but worked towards consolidation, expansion
and creating awareness of the power of sport
to change lives.
The past year has once again been an active one for the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation Trust South Africa with numerous project interactions having taken
place. Our work is not only to support projects fi nancially but also to become a
catalyst for them by identifying opportunities from which they can grow. Our
support takes the form of sponsorship or mutually benefi cial sporting events.
We are also committed to assisting and sharing resources with other Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation projects around the world and are fortunate that our
Foundation Trustees and Friends & Ambassadors have been very supportive of
all our projects. Highlights of the year were a project visit to Fight with Insight
and the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk event in Johannesburg, an occasion that
raised R400 000 (€34 000) for the Foundation. Both events were attended by
Laureus World Sports Academy members Daley Thompson and Steve Waugh.
Friend & Ambassador Deshun Deysel carried the Laureus fl ag with her as
she conquered the seven highest peaks in the world. Later in the year, she
led a group of 20 members of the Helderberg Partnership project up Table
Mountain. For many this was their fi rst experience of mountain climbing as
well as riding in a cable car. They were joined by participants from the newly
supported project Future Champs. This project helps to enhance opportunities
for youngsters who might otherwise be drawn into a world of crime and drug
abuse. By helping youngsters to help themselves, the programme, through
sport and study groups, gives young people an alternative focus, providing
them with the means to combat negative infl uences in their area.
The world-famous Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour held in March
saw Academy member Hugo Porta join forces with nine members of IWC
Schaffhaussen in tackling the 109-kilometre race. Another Friend & Ambassador
and ex-Leeds United captain, Lucas Radebe, joined more than 1 600 youngsters
in Durban as PeacePlayers International celebrated its 12th City-Wide Tournament
and Cultural Celebration with activities that fostered unity between children of
different backgrounds, races, religions and cultures. Academy member, Boris
Becker also participated and commented that, ‘Children who learn to play sport
together can learn to live together.’
The progress made in growing the Foundation is largely due to the committed
and selfl ess project leaders who want to make the world a better place. The
annual Role Models Retreat once again brought projects together at year-end
to remind everyone that we are part of an inspiring global family.
We look forward to growing the number of projects in the next year from
nine to eleven, as well as exploring potential new sponsors. An ambitious goal
for the near future is to stage an international project forum in South Africa
that will add to the growing awareness that the Laureus brand is truly universal
in its appeal.

This was an important inaugural year for
Laureus Foundation Switzerland – it was
launched offi cially and selected three projects
for funding.
In the fi rst year of its existence, Laureus Foundation Switzerland decided to
support three projects, two in Switzerland and one in Africa. The fi rst Swiss
project, Blindspot, aims to break down barriers between sight-impaired and
sighted young people through activities such as snowboarding and rock
climbing. The second, buntkicktgut, is a public, multi-racial street football
league that aims to use the power of sport to encourage the integration of
young migrants throughout Switzerland. The third project, MYSA in Kenya,
nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 and 2004, is a football league
of more than 1 000 teams where youngsters are encouraged to raise their
self-esteem and improve their health and well-being.
The Foundation hosted a press conference on 15th June in Zurich. This
was an opportunity to raise awareness for the new Foundation highlighting
its goals, mission and vision. Chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation, Edwin Moses, and Laureus World Sports Academy members,
Boris Becker and Ilie Nastase, were among the special guests. Respective
project leaders of the supported projects introduced their organisations to
the media and gave an overview of their methodology and the background
of the young people with whom they interact. Friends & Ambassadors,
Alain Sutter, Edith Hunkeler and Marc Rosset were amongst others who
committed themselves to the mission of Laureus Foundation Switzerland.
Following the press conference, the fi rst charity dinner was held at the
Park Hyatt in Zurich. Once again, the three projects were introduced to
guests by the project leaders. From a fundraising perspective, the gala
generated over CHF120 000 (€74 000) through a silent auction with
items donated by Academy members and Swiss Friends & Ambassadors.
The gala dinner had the invaluable presence of Academy members Edwin
Moses, Boris Becker and Ilie Nastase accompanied by the Swiss Friends &
Ambassadors. This event had good media coverage which promoted the
work of the newly established Foundation.
In October, the Foundation organised the fi rst visit to the buntkicktgut
project attending the fi nal of the football tournament which took place in
Zurich. Friend & Ambassador, Alain Sutter, attended the visit and interacted
with the participants, played football with them and gave them some
advice. This inspirational event was a success and participants learnt many
valuable lessons.
The Swiss Foundation is proud of its growth in 2007 and is looking
forward to continuing with it during 2008.
From the Bronx to Baltimore. From DC to
Dakota and on to the Delaware River. From
Washington Heights to Wyoming and West
Palm. And on to Vermont and Virginia...
A review of Laureus Foundation USA in 2007 plays like a classic song, with
a chorus that speaks to a year of travel, growth and a brighter future for
the children and families involved in the Foundation’s programmes and
activities around the country. Last year the Foundation’s projects helped
participants travel to places, both literally and fi guratively, that they had
never been before. They met people they never thought they would and
accomplished more than they ever thought possible.
Camp Interactive participants, many of whom had never travelled outside
of their neighborhoods, participated in hiking, camping, rock climbing,
canoeing, caving and sailing in summer adventure programmes in three
different States. The youngsters returned to tell their stories using their
newly acquired digital skills to create websites and digital journals at the
new Tech and Trek center in the Bronx, New York.
The participants and volunteers from I Challenge Myself may not have
traveled as far out-of-State, but their journey to accomplish a one-day, 100-
mile bicycle challenge in 2007 were no less impressive. Their Urban Bicycle
Tour/Cycling Smarts programme hosted by George Washington High
School in New York City engaged 40 students in an in-school/after school
nutrition and physical exercise curriculum that showed 90% attendance.
Weight loss from this exercise ranged from 10-30 pounds through bicycling
and cross-training that included swimming, running and yoga. Teachers,
adult volunteers and school administrators worked together to create an
interdisciplinary curriculum that integrated math, social studies and science
skills into the students health and nutrition activities. All of the participants
completed the Century Ride that took them on a 100-mile course through
New York City.
The highlight of 2007 for the Fight Back! project involved a great journey
to far-away places as well – but the kids did not have to travel any further
than their home-away-from-home at the Mary Mitchell Youth and Family
Center to have a truly international experience. Hailing from the Ukraine,
boxing champion and Laureus Friend & Ambassador, Wladimir Klitschko,
spent an evening with the participants and families of Fight Back! learning
about their martial arts and educational activities, and teaching them about
the discipline and respect that helped him become a legendary sporting
fi gure. Wladimir also announced his intention to support a new boxing
project through the Laureus Foundation USA in the near future.
With each of these projects, and with each child and family we come to
know and love, the Laureus Foundation USA continues its journey towards
a destination of social progress through the positive power of sport.
FIGHT FOR PEACE, BRAZIL
Winning the Laureus Sport for Good Award
in 2007 gave Fight for Peace a strong profile
within the sporting world and has helped to
build bridges and partnerships nationally and
internationally.
Fight for Peace’s mission is to offer real alternatives for children and youth
to the crime, drug trafficking and violence that is part of their daily lives
in the favela, or slum, where they live. Fight for Peace’s community-based
prevention and reintegration model improves the lives of young people in
the community with an innovative methodology based on five interrelated
strategies: sport as a lifestyle, education for a future, promoting a culture
of peace with non-violent conflict resolution, providing access to the labour
market and encouraging youth leadership.
In 2007, Roberto, Fight for Peace’s most successful boxer to date, won the
Golden Gloves tournament – Brazil’s second biggest open class tournament
after the nationals. Roberto also won the Tournament of Champions
and won bronze in the Open Games in São Paulo. The organisation also
organised boxing events at Rubens Vaz Square and at Vila Olímpica da
Maré under the supervision of the Boxing League of the State of Rio de
Janeiro and the Brazilian Boxing Confederation.
To date, 855 young people have attended the project and 240 citizenship
classes have been held, where topics discussed include sex education,
family, work, human rights, culture and conflict resolution. Also, 240 young
people participated in the intermediary computer classes held by the
project and 116 completed the full programme. Fifteen young people from
the project have completed job-training courses at partner organisations
and two members of the Youth Council have been given paid internships
with Promundo for the monitoring of public policies related to youth.
Successful athletes from Fight for Peace are in stark contrast to the
most dominant role models within the favela – armed drug traffickers.
Holding community-based boxing events give young athletes a chance to
perform in public and receive the kind of recognition and ‘status’ amongst
their peers that they may otherwise only find through drug trafficking or
participation in crime. In addition to young people from areas dominated by
rival drug factions attending the project, Fight for Peace organised a boxing
show on the dividing line between two areas of the favela dominated by
rival gangs. This landmark day brought people from ‘opposing’ sides of the
favela together in the name of sport and peace.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation’s support has also been
fundamental in replicating the project successfully in the UK.
PROJECT
HIGHLIGHT
MAGIC BUS, INDIA
Through its sport and experiential learning
programmes Magic Bus’s long-term vision is to
infl uence a radical shift in young people’s attitudes
to help them build strong and aware communities
across India.
2007 was a momentous year for Magic Bus. Having launched the Centre for
Learning & Development in October 2006 Magic Bus initiated many new
programmes throughout the year and conducted residential programmes
to over 2 000 children. The project also generated revenue at the centre
for the fi rst time. Magic Bus conducted its fi rst international overseas
train-the-trainer programme in Vietnam and had the opportunity to visit
MYSA in Kenya through UK Sport. The project was selected to be part
of the London Olympics Inspiration 2012 project, a partnership between
the UK government and the Indian Ministry for Sport and Youth Affairs.
Our founder, Matthew Spacie, was awarded an MBE by the Queen, and
the organisation was given a three-year grant by the Barclays Premier
League. The Magic Bus fi rst football team moved into the fourth division
of the MDFA league and we launched our very fi rst girls’ teams in both our
community projects.
Our focus this year has been to clean up the community as well as
increase attendance of the programme. The initiatives have all come from
the children. In one community, they saved their snack money and instead
paid for paint and tiling. They cleaned a whole area in the slum, painted it
and ran a peaceful rally with banners they had made themselves to persuade
their neighbours to respect the area and keep it clean and tidy. In another
community project, a huge rubbish dump was converted into a playground
by the children and their relatives and friends. Magic Bus ensures children
are key stakeholders in the programme and, as far as possible, decisions
are made in consultation with the children, be it attendance, starting on
time, looking after equipment, organising snacks or developing community
projects outside the sessions. In the long term, we aim to make the
programmes sustainable at a community level and the focus is therefore on
interdependence rather than full reliance on Magic Bus.
This year, for the fi rst time, Magic Bus organised an open football
tournament. Around 300 men and women participated, including parents,
taxi drivers, vegetable vendors and more. The tournament not only helped
raise awareness for a child’s’ right to play, but also increased adults’
acceptance and ownership of such development programmes.
Magic Bus is in the process of developing a monitoring and evaluation
tool to measure its effectiveness. A key indicator in our analysis of projects
is their sustainability and the degree to which children have participated in
decision making.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS PROGRAMME, CHINA
By creating opportunities for Special Olympic
athletes to train, compete and interact
together with members of their community,
SOEA achieved its aims of fostering respect
and inclusion for people with disabilities.
The Special Olympics Unified Sports Programme (SOEA) strives, as its main
objective, to provide challenges for Special Olympics athletes, and to provide
unique opportunities for them and people without intellectual disabilities
(ID) to jointly participate in sports training and competitions, thus promoting
equality and inclusion.
The project funded five key activities in 2007, including competitions,
clinics and workshops. The sports offered are bowling, basketball, softball,
judo and kayaking – the last two being newly introduced sports.
Using Laureus Sport for Good Foundation grants for 2007, SOEA also
organised three winter-sports training camps in January 2008 on mainland
China (skiing), Korea (snowboarding) and Taiwan (snow-shoeing), in
preparation for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games.
By training and competing together, Special Olympic athletes gain self-
confidence, while their partners and the community members in general
come to a better understanding of people with ID. This, in turn, helps create
a society with more respect, acceptance and inclusion.
With a view to promoting inclusiveness, smaller training groups and
competitions are organised to stimulate the interest of participants. These
trained participants then give demonstrations at bigger functions or festival
events so that guests and other athletes are introduced to the concept of
Unified Sports.
Since being introduced to China in 2002, participants of SOEA have
grown to 29 439 athletes, including their partners. However, still only a small
portion of the general public know about Special Olympics, and few people
understand the problems and potentials of people with ID, and how they can
be helped, so our work is far from over.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has provided much needed
assistance to SOEA to spearhead the project, particularly in China. It has
now attracted the attention of the Chinese government, which has begun
to lend financial support to Unified Sports activities. The Laureus Sport for
Good Foundation has certainly created a great legacy in China and other
SOEA programmes.
HIGHLIGHT
UNIÓN Y AMISTAD DE SAN ISIDRO, ARGENTINA
‘If you are free to choose your present, you
will be free to choose your future.’ With
this motto UASI is reshaping the way young
people perceive school by showing them the
importance of education.
In La Cava, the community in Buenos Aires where Unión y Amistad de San
Isidro (UASI) is active, only five percent of youth finish secondary school. One-
hundred percent, however, of UASI participants either attend school or are in
the process of being reintegrated into the educational system. Additionally,
by attending the project, participants generate a space where they can
develop new friendships while sharing their problems with professionals who
are able to assist them in improving their lives.
Since the beginning of 2007, the management of the project has been
delegated to individuals from the community instead of being facilitated
by external professionals. UASI’s strong links with important stakeholders
in the community means that programme activities are coordinated and
delivered by a team of individuals that were raised in the community and
understand particular issues and challenges. UASI has begun strengthening
its methodology to ensure that it can be replicated in other areas. The
main challenge was identifying community leaders to manage the project.
Today, the project is managed by ex-participants. However, it is important to
highlight that this was a long process that involved training the participants
in making them leaders of their own projects.
UASI also organised the second Hockey Sevens Tournament which
promotes the transmission and application of positive values through sport.
Many teams from all over the country participated in the event, but it was the
representatives from our project who were responsible for coordinating the
transfer of values to the rest of the participating projects and teams.
With UASI being the only sports organisation in this dangerous 10 000-
strong slum, our methodology includes two clear elements: sport and human
development. Daily coaching sessions take place where coaches emphasise
nutrition and health, as well as promoting moral values. Weekly meetings
are held for participants to share their concerns and problems that are not
necessarily related to sports, such as school, sex education, abuse, violence
and citizenship. The sessions inform the project leaders of the challenges that
need to be addressed.
Beyond the much-needed financial support, being part of the Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation provides us with an opportunity to be part of a
network of projects that seek to change the lives of children in Argentina. We
are able to share experiences, exchange resources and contacts, generate new
friendships, share best-practices and learn from each other’s achievements
and mistakes.
