CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Communities around the world continue to face terrible hardship caused by natural disasters, war, famine and disease. These phenomena have an ongoing impact on children and young people around the world in the form of social aftermaths. Once again, 2007 has seen the Laureus organisation look to relieve at least a few of these issues by using the power of sport. 2007 was another tremendous year for the Foundation. The organisation raised more funds and supported more projects than ever before. The issues social communities face and the projects that the Foundation funds to assist in tackling those problems consistently reminds us how sport has the power to make a difference. Activities at projects the Foundation funds tackle an amazing number of different issues from general health and well being, the scourge of HIV/AIDS and the education of children about it, conflict and violence and gender inequality to name a few. In the modern world, where these issues keep expanding, I am confident that sport has the power to address and positively impact on each and every one. The Foundation continues to enjoy the support of the Laureus World Sports Academy and its Founding Partners. I am tremendously grateful to my fellow Academy members for the on-going support, not only through their patronage, but in the time they give to visit projects, assist in raising the profile of the Foundation and more importantly, the projects the organisation supports. My fellow Academy members and I are passionate about the causes the Foundation supports and I speak on behalf of us all, when I admit that we are consistently awe-struck by the courage and determination that we see in the faces of the young children taking part in activities which we visit, who face such tremendous difficulties in their daily lives. It is as a result of the Founding Patrons, Daimler and Richemont, and in particular Founding Partners Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen that the Foundation is able to continue its work and I am extremely grateful to them for their continued patronage. There are, of course, many other funders who make contributions to the organisation, both corporate and private and we are eternally grateful for their support. 2008 will see a new era for the Foundation. The organisation will grow in terms of supported projects and also as we develop strategies to link existing projects we already support. We hope to promote understanding and transfer expertise between some of the most worthy projects around the world. Laureus will provide a platform which links this expertise to major international projects and NGOs and to smaller community projects, the leaders of whom often find themselves isolated and without intellectual support. We look forward to 2008, once again with huge excitement and anticipation. There are many more stories to tell and much work to be done. I hope you will enjoy reading within these pages some of the stories and a little more about our ongoing work.
