NATIONAL FOUNDATION REPORT 16 In 2007, Laureus Foundation Germany expanded its activities in various fields, launched three new projects, participated in a TV documentary and organised many fundraising events. Laureus Foundation Germany embarked on three new projects in 2007. The first, move&do, is a specialised, mobile sports and group activities unit that tackles violence, drug abuse and ethnic discrimination in schools. The programme includes canoeing, climbing and group games. The patron of the project is Friend & Ambassador and multiple World Champion and Olympic gold medalist in bobsledding, Christoph Langen. Supported by the Foundation and the German Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, KICK Formore, a streetfootball league promoting tolerance, was launched in Stuttgart on 21st July. More than 400 youngsters from six different cities from the state of Baden Württemberg participate in the league. Friend & Ambassador, Axel Schulz, former world class heavyweight boxer, is the project’s patron. KICK im Boxring is the third project in Berlin that Laureus Foundation Germany assists in conjunction with Berliner Sportjugend. Located in Berlin- Treptow, the programme aims to take youth off the street and into a boxing gym where exercise is coupled with social counselling. Triple titleholder in heavyweight boxing, Wladimir Klitschko, launched the project on 30th August 2007. Klitschko’s experiences in Berlin inspired him to commit to a similar project in New York in 2008. On 5th May, 63 000 spectators watched an action-packed racing weekend in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. With his Laureus AMG Mercedes C- Class, British driver Gary Paffett won the second DTM race of the season. At the end of the season, Paffett’s Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class car will be auctioned to raise funds for the Foundation. The Laureus-branded car races in favour of the Foundation and is therefore a unique feature on the DTM circuits. Making history, Germany’s Premiere TV produced a series of documentaries on Laureus projects. Seven installments of 30 minutes each feature the activities of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation around the world. A highlight show completes the set. The Foundation received a total of 20 hours of coverage. In November 2007, Chairman of Laureus Foundation Germany, Boris Becker, visited the PeacePlayers International project in South Africa. He was joined by the Executive Director of Laureus and Vice President of Brand Communications for Mercedes-Benz, Dr Olaf Göttgens. This inspirational trip to the townships of Durban and Johannesburg culminated in their meeting with honorary patron of the Laureus World Sports Awards, Nelson Mandela. 2007 also brought a remarkable number of fundraisers and donations. Highlights were the ATP Tennis Tournament MercedesCup in Stuttgart in July and the Stars&Cars event by Mercedes-Benz in November.
