Laureus Sport for Good Foundation

As Founding Partner of the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation, IWC Schaffhausen has enthusiastically
implemented the Laureus philosophy over the last year
with a wide variety of activities, providing financial
support and also by direct involvement in the frontline
work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
In April, Laureus World Sports Academy members
Boris Becker, Ilie Nastase and Alberto Tomba joined with
international media representatives at the SIHH 2007
watch fair for the launch of the limited-edition Pilot’s
Watch Chrono-Automatic Edition Laureus Sport for
Good Foundation of which only 2 500 were made. This
watch will carry the Laureus message around the world
while bringing material benefit – US$500 000 from the
sale proceeds were donated to the Foundation.
The exclusive engraving on the back of the watch
is based on a child’s drawing, the winning entry in the
drawing competition organised by IWC for children
involved in Laureus supported projects around the
world. This year’s ‘Time for Joy’ drawing competition
was won by Jimena Mainé, aged seven, from Uruguay,
who submitted a coloured drawing that depicts the
joy and happiness of three girls playing basketball in
resplendent sunshine.
One of the highlights of the Laureus World Sports
Awards in Barcelona in May 2007 was the launch of
the IWC book Let The Children Play, dedicated to the
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The book outlines
the work of the Foundation by portraying a selection of
ten projects it supports. World-renowned photographers
and journalists visited the projects and created this
high quality coffee-table book with powerful iconic
photographic images and on-the-ground reports. It is a
great showcase for the Foundation’s mission: using sport
as a vehicle for social change in deprived communities.
IWC Schaffhausen then brought the Laureus message
to Japan with a book launch attended by Chairman of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Edwin Moses.
Together with Japanese tennis player Kimiko Date, he
inaugurated a special exhibition of images from the book.
IWC supported a variety of Laureus activities around
the world in 2007, providing financial, public-relations
and event-organising support, and donating watches
to auctions and special events to raise funds, for
example at the IWC Laureus Polo Cup.
IWC Schaffhausen is proud to be the driving force
behind establishing Laureus Foundation Switzerland
and is fully committed to raising public awareness of
Laureus and its projects. The first IWC initiative for
the Foundation was the IWC Tennis Trophy in Geneva
in June. Supported by Academy member Ilie Nastase
as well as Friends & Ambassadors Emilio Sanchez and
Marc Rosset, this event not only generated funds
but also awareness for the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation in Switzerland.
