NATIONAL FOUNDATION REPORT 26 From the Bronx to Baltimore. From DC to Dakota and on to the Delaware River. From Washington Heights to Wyoming and West Palm. And on to Vermont and Virginia... A review of Laureus Foundation USA in 2007 plays like a classic song, with a chorus that speaks to a year of travel, growth and a brighter future for the children and families involved in the Foundation’s programmes and activities around the country. Last year the Foundation’s projects helped participants travel to places, both literally and fi guratively, that they had never been before. They met people they never thought they would and accomplished more than they ever thought possible. Camp Interactive participants, many of whom had never travelled outside of their neighborhoods, participated in hiking, camping, rock climbing, canoeing, caving and sailing in summer adventure programmes in three different States. The youngsters returned to tell their stories using their newly acquired digital skills to create websites and digital journals at the new Tech and Trek center in the Bronx, New York. The participants and volunteers from I Challenge Myself may not have traveled as far out-of-State, but their journey to accomplish a one-day, 100- mile bicycle challenge in 2007 were no less impressive. Their Urban Bicycle Tour/Cycling Smarts programme hosted by George Washington High School in New York City engaged 40 students in an in-school/after school nutrition and physical exercise curriculum that showed 90% attendance. Weight loss from this exercise ranged from 10-30 pounds through bicycling and cross-training that included swimming, running and yoga. Teachers, adult volunteers and school administrators worked together to create an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrated math, social studies and science skills into the students health and nutrition activities. All of the participants completed the Century Ride that took them on a 100-mile course through New York City. The highlight of 2007 for the Fight Back! project involved a great journey to far-away places as well – but the kids did not have to travel any further than their home-away-from-home at the Mary Mitchell Youth and Family Center to have a truly international experience. Hailing from the Ukraine, boxing champion and Laureus Friend & Ambassador, Wladimir Klitschko, spent an evening with the participants and families of Fight Back! learning about their martial arts and educational activities, and teaching them about the discipline and respect that helped him become a legendary sporting fi gure. Wladimir also announced his intention to support a new boxing project through the Laureus Foundation USA in the near future. With each of these projects, and with each child and family we come to know and love, the Laureus Foundation USA continues its journey towards a destination of social progress through the positive power of sport.
